Poet in New York

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Although he's touched on pop in his long career, Georgie Fame's heart belongs to the music that first inspired him in the 1950s, classic bop vocalese, words set to instrumental solos à la Jon Hendricks and King Pleasure. This is a varied program that touches on some classics of the genre, such as Hendricks's version of Horace Silver's "Doodlin'" and Pleasure's lyrics to Lester Young's solo on "Symphony Sid." If there's any emphasis here, it's on composer Tadd Dameron, with three tunes included, and trumpeter Chet Baker, four of his solos gaining lyrics from Fame or Mike O'Neill, including the superb "But Not for Me." Fame sings with wit, intimacy, and ease, swinging through originals and some seldom-heard songs with a warm baritone that can slide to rumbling bass, usually for musical quotations. He's as good at harmonically demanding ballads, such as Dameron's boppish "On a Misty Night" or Billy Strayhorn's classic "Lush Life," as he is on medium tempos, and his mastery of the idiom shows in the way his own songs, such as "Declaration of My Love," fit so comfortably with the vintage material.

The accompanists work hand-in-glove with Fame, including tenor saxophonist Bob Malach, pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Peter Washington, and legendary drummer Louis Hayes. Producer Ben Sidran joins in for vocal duets on "Doodlin'" and "Girl Talk," contributing alternative lyrics to the latter as well. Recorded direct to CD, the sound complements the collective command of the bop idiom, conveying the ambience of a '50s jazz bar. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for five winning performances........2003-09-19

I owned the LP of this back in the early 1960s (the cover showed a bright red apple with a target painted on it) and played these pieces over and over. The music is wonderful, the performances among Bernstein's best, and the sonics spectacular. I wish I still had my vinyl copy, however, because I would love to compare it to this CD-for sonics, I suspect the LP would win.

Not that the CD is bad, but Columbia LPs in those days were produced with a very recognizable equalization that is not apparent here. And as I remember, there was somewhat more detail on the LP, especially in the strings and in the many bells that decorate these quickly recognizable, entertaining pieces. (Each of the five compositions held a firm place as background music for Warner Brothers cartoons.)

However, the CD is entirely listenable (and certainly contains no pops or scratches). I will be interested to hear the SACD version if Columbia ever produces one. From what I have heard, Columbia's few SACD reissues sound more like the LPs. In any case, the product labeling is poor. The front cover says, "Digitally mastered analog recording," while the back cover informs us that the disc is AAD. (The disc itself says AAD, but it wouldn't be the first mislabeled CD.) No date of production whatsoever appears, though we learn that the cover was designed in 1981. (Give me the apple with the target on it.) The interesting liner notes are what appeared on the back of the LP, no more, no less.

It's not an expensive disc, and some of the pieces, oddly, are not easy to find. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Performances Indeed!.......2001-08-04

This disc which is aptly named "Favorite Overtures" captures Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic at the peak of their creative powers during the 1960's. Each of the five overtures are gems, but of particular delight are the Mignon and Raymond Overtures by Ambroise Thomas. The Raymond Overture with it's galloping opening motive is a hidden treasure which has not been recorded very often. Thankfully, Bernstein gives us a rendition of Raymond that could only be described as definitive. The other overtures on this disc are Zampa, Poet and Peasant, and William Tell. Not only are they expertly played, but their sound is in the demonstration class which is amazing considering that they were made nearly forty years ago. The fact that this disc has remained in circulation for so long speaks for itself. My highest recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Recorded Tenor Voice?.......2005-06-22

Is any recorded, tenor, singing voice as lovely as Kenny Baker's? As a child, I often heard him during the 1930s on the Jack Benny show, but have scarcely thought of him since. Amazon.com offers him on four CDs: BABES IN TOYLAND, LOVE WALKED IN, THE STARLIT HOUR and WEILL FROM BERLIN TO BROADWAY. Over the years, I have heard the recorded voices of many tenors, mostly operatic. Their fine voices were excellently trained, often to a wider range and more difficult music. But note for note, their sound as recorded is not I think as sheerly beautiful as Kenny Baker's. A splendid, unspoiled, unstrained, natural gift, put to disciplined and tasteful use! His enunciation is remarkably clear, and his musical line, perfectly smooth. He makes each song a different story, as in the six pieces here from BABES IN TOYLAND.

My claim is easy to test. This website has CDs with excerpts for listening to the best tenors of the 20th century, including Enrico Caruso, John McCormack, Giovanni Martinelli, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, Richard Tauber, Richard Crooks, Jussi Bjoerling, Morton Downey, Mario Lanza, Giuseppe di Stefano, Nicolai Gedda, Jan Peerce, Leopold Simoneau, Fritz Wunderlich, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Of course, the earlier the career, the greater the damage to the recorded voice from primitive technology. Heard live, who knows which voice was most beautiful? But at least we have what earlier centuries could only imagine: lasting copies of live performances. Listen to Kenny Baker's voice on tracks 2 and 8 of BABES IN TOYLAND, and then compare.

The numbers from THE RED MILL will make you want to hear more. This operetta, also composed by Victor Herbert, was first produced in 1906, three years after BABES IN TOYLAND. "Moonbeams" (well sung by Eileen Farrell) is lovely; "Because You're You" (a duet between Farrell and Felix Knight) is quite simple but surprisingly affecting. The last two are the best: "Every Day Is Ladies' Day with Me," and "In Old New York." They are patter songs, perhaps inspired by, and surely as deft, as the ones that Gilbert and Sullivan were writing two decades earlier. Both are sung by Wilbur Evans, in a rich baritone, with perfect enunciation and marvelous comic flair. Great fun!

The selections on this CD were recorded in 1944 and 1945, then released in 1946 on both 78s and 10" LPs. For this CD, they were remastered from wartime lacquered-glass originals. Baker and Evans emerge in radiant form, surely much closer to live sound than reached our family radio via AM transmission 65 years ago. The orchestral and choral sound is less attractive. Poorly miked?

3 out of 5 stars Very, very truncated........2002-12-09

The scores of Victor Herbert's "Babes in Toyland" and "The Red Mill" are lovely classics, but the incomplete scores represented by this Decca Broadway remastering of its antiquated 78s are not the best reprentation. My advice: wait for the John McGlinn "Babes in Toyland" to be released. As for "The Red Mill", you'd do better to pick up the Ohio Light Opera's double-CD from Albany Records.

3 out of 5 stars incomplete pleasure.......2002-11-09

Two terrible mistakes keep this from 5 stars.. BABES IN TOYLAND is not complete as they are missing the delightful IN THE TOYMAKER'S WORKSHOP. Why? In THE RED MILL they use a butchered take of EVERY DAY IS LADIES DAY WITH ME. Again, why?
John McGlinn will be out with a complete BABES soon - and there is a lot of music in it - so you may want to wait.

4 out of 5 stars Finally available on CD!.......2002-08-01

Decca's 1946 album of selections from Victor Herbert's celebrated musical was a welcome addition to record libraries, covering most of the major songs plus some of the delightful dance music. The album was reissued as a ten-inch Lp in 1949. A later reissue in 1957 dropped 4 songs to fit the score on one side of a twelve-inch Lp backed by six selections from Herbert's THE RED MILL. That pairing is reproduced here but the CD contains the complete BABES IN TOYLAND program! It's nice to have it back too! Nice of Decca to give us this early Christmas present this year. But BABES IN TOYLAND is a score that enchants all year round. How strange that no other complete recording exists.

The six selections form THE RED MILL offer a nice bonus, and the selections are well sung.

I first came across Georgie on a Go Sampler about ten years ago. His songs knocked me out. I bought a copy of "Cool Cat Blues" shortly thereafter. This cd in my mind ranks as one of the top ten jazz vocal cd's of all times. If you missed it, be on the look out for it as is a "classic". What I missed on this c.d. is Georgie's great organ playing. The backup group though competent is mediocre at best. Georgie has a great distinctive voice and goes a good job,but

5 out of 5 stars The Last of the Royal Editions.......2003-07-09

Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic's recordings of Rossini and Suppe Overtures is one of the last titles available in the classic Sony Royal Edition series. While many of these titles have been reissued in the Bernstein Century series, this one has not, which probably accounts for its current availability. This collection is a welcome alternative to another Sony Rossini Overture offering in the Essential Classics series (in fact the very same performance of the Semiramide Overture featured on this title also appears on it -- see my review), and the Suppe Overtures are just icing on the cake. Those looking for a first rate collection of the more popular overtures, you have come to the right place, but if you want a more complete look at Rossini's Overtures, try Chailly or Marriner. With that being said, if you are still interested in this title, I would move fast as most Bernstein Royal Edition titles are now out of print, and most likely this one will suffer the same fate shortly.

    5 out of 5 stars Dvorak's Carnival Overture.......2005-08-19

I've listened to a number of performances of Dvorak's Carnival Overture through the years, including the performances by George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra, Istvan Kertesz and the London Symphony, and Rafael Kubelik's version on the DGG label. However, none match the excitement that Bernstein's interpretation summons. A very robust, driving tempo is maintained through the tutti parts, resulting in a very tight and energizing performance reminiscent of some of the past Arturo Toscanini interpretations of orchestral works. Despite the age of the performance, the sound quality is quite good, although it may fall a little short if you are used to digital recordings.
