Petula's French recordings of the late sixties.......2003-02-08

Apart from two tracks from 1970, all these songs are from 1968 or 1969. Although Petula's music was as good as ever, her music was going out of fashion so the music here is generally less well known than her music from the mid-sixties, although it does include French versions of her classic songs Kiss me goodbye and Happy heart, as well as Melody man, the English version of which was a big hit in Australia.

There are fewer covers here than on the earlier volumes, but there are excellent French versions of Tiny bubbles (Don Ho), Dry your eyes (Brenda and the tabulations) and Loving things (an American hit for Grass roots and a British hit for Marmalade).

There is also one song recorded in English - When you return, a song of French origin, written by Paul Mariat. Most of the other songs are French originals. They sound every bit as good as Petula's earlier French music, with a good mix of tempos. Petula's fans everywhere will enjoy this collection.

WARNING! If you buy this album, you will probably want to buy all nine Petula Clark Anthologie CD's.

This is a magical CD of many 1968 and 1970 recordings by perhaps the most sensual female pop singer. The musical arrangements are beautiful and Pet made her best recordings in the 1960's and early 1970's. On this album she exhibits her rich, crystal clear vocals and her amazing ability to seamlessly change tempo, key, and dramatic intensity within a song. Her interpretations were elegant and flawless and she created a wide range of moods from playful, serious, romantic, dramatic, sad, and haunting (Je Reve). Included are French versions of some of her original English recordings such as Kiss Me Goodbye, Melody Man, and When I Was A Child. In my opinion, Pet's French recordings were her best and she was even more popular in France and Quebec than in the United States (41 top forty songs in France).

I consider Petula to be the best French female pop singer, and all nine of the Petula Clark French Anthologie CD's are outstanding.
