Customer Reviews:
Incomplete Fifties Studio Recordings.......2006-10-16
I am glad to see the continued interest in Jay and Kai's recordings. However, this collection is NOT complete. It omits the ten duet tracks from the Columbia album "Jay and Kai", CL 973. The omitted tracks are as follows: You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To / Caribe / Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe / The Song Is You / In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning / Tromboniums in Motion / How High the Moon / Violets for Your Furs / Too Close for Comfort / 'S Wonderful. These tracks were recorded in 1955 and 1956, and should have been included on this collection.

Album Details
When Basie Reformed his Big Band in the 1950s, He Managed to Become Entirely New by Sticking with What Had Made Him Great from the Start. And in the Process, Basie Achieved Some of the Most Extraordinary Success of his Career. The Original Reel to Reel Tapes were the Source for Most of this Release which Contains 146 Tracks on Eight Cds, Including Seven Previously-unreleased Recordings and Three Alternates Not in the Vaults at Universal Music. Chris Albertson's Liner Notes Take the Reader Through Each and Every Recording, in Addition to Laying Out What was Happening to the Band Outside the Booth; Details that Suggest He's Had Access to Everyone's Date Book from the Period. The Complete Discography Clears Up Many Inaccuracies and Inconsistencies that have Bedeviled the Release of this Material for a Half-a-century.
Customer Reviews:
Tight and swingin'.......2005-12-31
My bias is that I'm very fond of this period in Basie's career. As this collection reveals, his band had top-knotch material and was replete with master craftsmen. When Basie sparingly tinkles the keys it still sends chills down my spine. By this time he was the swami of concise perfection, never saying more than need be. On the uncommon track when he cuts loose, such as Blues for the Count and Oscar, the result is thrilling.
The packaging -- including a 20-page booklet -- is thorough and informative but not opulent. So far as I've seen, no label has given Basie the sort of loving treatment that has been bestowed on collections of Holiday and Ellington. Clearly, though, the music in this collection has been sensitively tended to and sounds fantastic. The booklet has the essential information about personnel and recording dates, and a list of the albums on which the material was originally released is included.
Jazz lovers owe immense gratitude to Norman Granz, who originally produced this material for his labels.
From the beginning there was no serious competition. Basie is the King of Swing. This limited edition collection is a valuable contribution to the preservation and dissemination of his work. It should be in every public library that has a CD collection and in the home of every Jazz lover. Most of it has never been available on CD.

Album Description
This rare release contains the complete 1950s recordings of trumpet giant Pee Wee Erwin's legendary sextet. The trumpeter is featured here on 15 ebullient tracks along with such notable musicians as clarinetist Sal Pace, trombonist Andy Russo, pianist & arranger Billy Maxted, bassist Charlie Treager & drummer Tony Spargo. Several of these sidemen, most notably Maxted & Spargo - who was also the drummer for the legendary ODJB - became successful bandleaders in their own right. While the bulk of the material is made up of classic Dixieland fare, the excitement & enjoyment of the musicians is palpable, & the group performances & individual solos are all exceptional. Remastered, it's scheduled to include one rare bonus track. Details TBA. Lonehill Jazz. 2004.
Customer Reviews:
Pee Wee Irvin and his Hot Jazzmen.......2007-05-07
I have owned and enjoyed this in LP format for years, ever since I heard Pee Wee in Chicago when I was in college. His trumpet is clear and he's a virtuoso at bringing out the best of his instrument and driving his band. An accomplished jazzman, he also played for the New York Philamonic and was at Nick's in Greenwich Village in the '50's. Billy Maxted, formerly of Bob Crosby's band, is all over the piano with a two-handed style unrivaled among his contemporaries, and my late friend,Tony Spargo (Sparbaro) of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, is on drums and kazoo. This is a marvelous addition to anyone's jazz collection of New York dixieland.

Customer Reviews:
The essential Pat Boone.......2003-06-25
I echo the sentiments of the other reviewers. A real nice bonus is an enclosed book filled with info on Pat including covering(recording someone elses songs i.e. Little Richard), recording data, a bio, and some great photos even one with his rival of the time, "Elvis". I too am brought back to the time of my high school years with fondness. JK
Terrific, but .............................2002-07-26
I am a life-long Pat Boone fan. The contents of this CD set, which span his early career, is a stroke of genius. It also allowed me to discard many vinyl albums of these songs.
My gripes are 1) why repeat certain songs several times throughout the set, and 2) why mix hymns and Christmas music within Pat's ballads?.
Over all, I do not regret purchasing this set and encourage other Pat Boone fans to do the same.
Technique.......2000-10-07
All I want is to get acopy of "Technique". And I have no way of asking anyone how to get it. Fred Ericsen - Miller. Springbokfoods@dingoblue.net.au
A must for fans.......1998-10-08
This complete collection of Pat Boone's recordings from the fifties is a must for all fans of this kind of music. Pat Boone is to my taste one of the two best male pop singers of this century (the other being Bing Crosby). Is amazing to see and listen a collection of about 350 songs of such a consistent quality of writing and singing. I am waiting for the sixties!.
Pat Boone takes his place among the Pop Music Greats.......1998-10-02
This 12 CD boxed set containing 347 songs - Pat Boone's entire 1950's recorded output - deserves an honest, openminded, and thorough examination. It's so easy these days to quickly dismiss Pat Boone, as so many have done, with hardly a listen beyond a few R&R cover songs which he recorded during his first year with dot records. These criticisms have been unduly harsh especially when viewed in the context of of 1955-1956 style Rock & Roll. During that time Pat Boone was called a Rock & Roll singer and was taken seriously as such. You may like or dislike Pat Boone's early R&R hits - 'TWO HEARTS', 'AINT THAT A SHAME', 'TUTTI FRUTTI',etc., but it is important to remember that those songs comprise but a very small part of his 1950's recorded output and demonstrate one side only of his amazing versatility. Certainly, on any voluminous, comprehensive collection not all the tracks are going to be "gems" and this anthology contains a few that don't shine so brightly. But, the vast majority of material here has so very much to recommend it. 'Exquisite' and 'Impeccable' are adjectives that do not exaggerate Pat's unaffected, natural, and totally wholehearted way with a song. Whether it's 'STARDUST', 'BEGIN THE BEGUINE', 'CHEEK TO CHEEK', 'YES INDEED', ST. LOUIS BLUES', 'MORE THAN YOU KNOW', - these, and countless others are all "done to perfection". The accolades that came Pat's way during the fifties included critical acclaim and raves from Sinatra, Crosby, Como and many other contemporaries and critics, alike. In an August 1957 interview with Red Robinson in Vancouver B.C. Elvis Presley said of Pat Boone, "The finest voice in music today". That, all by itself, says a lot. This Boxed Set has the potentiality of opening a lot of new eyes and maybe some closed eyes, as well.
