Greatest Country Songs
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Brenda Lee's career began at the tender age of just 5 singing her heart out in church with the Master Worker's Quartet in Georgia. One of the biggest pop stars of the early '60s and while she made few recordings of note after the mid-60's, the best of her first decade is fine indeed, encompassing not just the pop ballads that were her biggest hits, but straight country and some surprisingly fierce rockability. Nearly 50 years later and over 100 million albums sold, Brenda's work is distinctively recognized all over the world.

It's a shame that only one side of Elvis' multi-faceted talent is remembered 25 years on from his death but there is so much more to the millennium's greatest performer than garish jump suits and shaky legs. The 50 Greatest Love Songs reminds us what a great singer Presley was; coming from the heart with more feeling and passion than most could ever imagine, all 50 of these songs are classics of the last four decades. The double disc set includes all the up-tempo standards like the incredible "Suspicious Minds", "I just can't help believin'" and "Always On My Mind" plus the Dusty Springfield signature tune "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". Also included are some of his older works from before and during the cinema years like "Good Luck Charm", "Love Me Tender" and "Old Shep". So no blue shoes, no sequinned jump suits, just the king singing about life, love and heartache. --Georgina Collins
Customer Reviews:
So wonderful to hear again!.......2007-07-05
This is a wonderful album....brought back so many memories from my youth. Elvis' voice is so sexy and soothing and perfect for these songs. Well done CD...clear and very good sound.
One awsome CD.......2007-05-15
Enough said. One awsome CD! Buy it.
If you love Elvis, you'll love this CD.
The 50 Greatest Love Songs.......2007-04-15
I am a huge Elvis fan, especially his love songs and gospel music. This CD is excellent and is a very comprehensive collection of his love songs. Even songs that were made famous by other artists, are sung well by him. His renditions are a pleasure to listen to. There is only one Elvis!
Not worth it........2007-01-23
Recordings sound like they were all done the same day,
in as little time as possible, with the least amount
of studio talent. Terrible.
Fifty Fifty.......2007-01-11
About half the songs are great old songs I'm familiar with, the other half are songs made famous by other artists and most are clangers for Elvis that are painful to listen to.

K.t. Oslin - Greatest Hits: Songs from an Aging Sex Bomb.......2006-11-10
Her voice has great range and she has such control ! Her songs are from her soul..aging sex bomb or not ! We love her.
K.T Shines again.......2005-11-11
Just when you miss your favorite K.T. song, you get lucky with this great cd. All her great hits with a few new goodies to tie it all in. Her voice, as usual sounds great. I am a die hard K.T fan and any cd she sings.. well she had me at 80's ladies. She refreshes Hold me, Gives New Way home a new Twist ( more Pop, less country i like it lol)
A Collection From One of the Best..........2003-06-05
When I think back to 80's country and recollect the best 'artists' of the time, I think of Rosanne Cash, Earl Thomas Conley, Judds, Lyle Lovett, and K.T. Oslin. Each of these artists brought so much freshness to country music. I loved Oslin, which surprised me because I never thought I would love music by a middle-aged sex bomb, but she is so full of sass, creativity, and she has some very fun songs that are realistic and not over-blown. I love "Hold Me", which was a bold single to release to country radio (thankfully they loved it!), "Come Next Monday", "This Woman", and "Hey Bobby" are all songs that broke down barriers about how 'country women' should be and what 'country women' should sing about. My all-time favorite of hers is "80's Ladies", which seems weird since I'm a guy and at the time the song came out, I was only in my early 20's, but that song has some of the best lyrics I've ever heard and they are so honest to what women her age had been through in their lives. I especially love the ending of the song, which sounds like a nursery rhyme, but accounts what each of the 'girls from school' ended up doing with their lives. I will always remember K.T. being the best of the 80's; a strong and vibrant woman who wasn't afraid to break down the weaker sex stereotypes. If she had been my mother, I wouldn't have been embarrassed of her at all, I would have held my head high and said, "Yep, that's my mom!"
Required Listening.......2003-05-26
This is K.D. at her finest. This woman has always stood apart from the crowd of bowers and scrapers doing whatever the industry dictates to get a hit song. She's nervy, she's strong, she's independent, and she's ungodly sexy. Some of her songs send shivers cascading down my spine.
Don't miss out. This lady is one of the music industry's best examples of a reason for existing.
K.D. Darlin', Where Are You?.......2003-05-26
I am a diehard fan of K.T. Oslin. I have been hopelessly in love with her since the eighties when her megahit, Eighties Ladies, dominated the airwaves. I mentally worship at her feet and have erotic dreams about meeting her in person.
The title song of this album, "Live Close By, Visit Often", lyrically expresses my own take on relationships (and probably that of many others of us baby boomers as we ooze past middle age) and was the catalyst that spurred my purchase of this CD. I found this song to to be perky and aggressive, very much in keeping with K.D.'s style from the beginning til now. It definitely validated my purchase.
Unfortunately, it's by far the best song of a CD that serves mainly to emphasize that the ravages of age (facelifted photos on the cover not withstanding) are gonna gitcha if ya don't watch out--in more than just the looks department. K.D. puts forth a valiant effort to project her former power and vocally cynical interpretation, but succeeds only intermittently. When she fails, she's painfully reminiscent of a 60-year-old Nancy Sinatra attempting (and failing) to sing "These Boots Are Made For Walking" (shudder).
K.D.'s strength here lies in her up-tempo songs. She whips out "Live Close By", "Somebody's Leavin' Somebody", and "Mexico Road" with her traditional upbeat spirit and power. "Mean To Me", a big-band torch song rendition, is also rendered acceptably. Unfortunately, every slow song on the album (and there are too many) causes the listener (at least, this listener) to wince.
The album ends up with K.D.'s rendition of the Rosemary Clooney classic, "Come On-a My House", originally a provocatively sexy, seductively up-tempo tune. But here, incomprehensibly, it has been transformed into a slow, eerie, sound-effect-filled production worthy of theme music for a Twilight Zone episode. All the driving, demanding sexuality of the original is missing (yes (sob)... K.D. did a sexual song without sexuality).
Summing up by song:
Live Close By, Vist Often - *****
I Can't Remember Not Loving You - ***
Somebody's Leavin' Somebody - ***
Drivin', Cryin', Missin' You - *
Neva Sawyer - ***
A Moment of Forever - *
Mexico Road - ***
Maybe We Should Learn To Tango - *
If You Were The Only Boy In The World - *
Mean To Me - ****
What Is This Thing Called Love - *
Come On-A My House - **

Title fraud.......2007-04-11
I was very dissappointed with this CD.
It is only the "songs of" - very few sung by Woody himself.
Not what I was seeking - a CD by Woody alone.
Buyers should check this CD out very carefully first, make sure the artists and songs are what you want.
Woody Guthrie's colleagues make a tribute album in 1972.......2005-08-11
There are two reasons why calling this album "The Greatest Songs of Woody Guthrie" rather than some variation on the greatest hits idea makes sense. First, Guthrie was out singing these songs before there ever were any Billboard charts to help defiine exactly what constituted a hit. Second, although this album starts with Guthrie himself singing "This Land Is Your Land," clearly his most famous and most popular song, the track shifts to the song being sung by the Weavers. Guthrie sings a few songs and few duets, but mostly his songs are sung by other artists. So what we have here is a tribute album, originally a double-album now on a single CD, that represents some of the best first and second generation folk singers who followed in the path blazed by America's troubadour.
The first generation would be those artists that actually got to play with Guthrie, which would be not only the Weavers with Pete Seeger (the artist who most closely followed in Guthrie's footsteps), but also Cisco Houston, Sonny Terry and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. The next generation is represented on the album by Odetta, Joan Baez, and Country Joe McDonald. Yes, there is an authenticity to hearing Guthrie sing his songs that nobody else can touch, but there is something to be said for other artists replacing his rawness with more of the inherent beauty of his songs (the same way Peter, Paul & Mary did for Bob Dylan). The track information above is incomplete, so here is who sings what on "The Greatest Songs of Woody Guthrie":
1. "This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie/The Weavers
2. "Do Re Mi" by Cisco Houston
3. "So Long, It's Been Good To Know Yuh" by The Weavers
4. "Pastures Of Plenty" by Odetta
5. "Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)" by Cisco Houston
6. "900 Miles" by Cisco Houston
7. "Roll On Columbia" by Country Joe McDonald
8. "Hard, Ain't It Hard" by Woody Guthrie & Cisco Houston
9. "Dirty Overhalls" by Woody Guthrie
10. "Riding In My Car (Take Me)" by Woody Guthrie
11. "Ship In The Sky" by Cisco Houston
12. "The Sinking Of The Reuben James" by The Weavers
13. "Rambling Round Your City" by Odetta
14. "Jesus Christ" by Cisco Houston
15. "When The Curfew Blows" by Country Joe McDonald
16. "1913 Massacre" by Ramblin' Jack Elliott
17. "Talking Fishing Blues" by Ramblin' Jack Elliott
18. "Curly Headed Baby" by Cisco Houston
19. "Jackhammer John" by The Weavers
20. "The Great Historical Bum" by Odetta
21. "Pretty Boy Floyd" by Joan Baez
22. "Buffalo Skinners" by Jim Kweskin
23. "Hard Travelin'" by Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston & Sonny Terry
My favorite track is Odetta's "Pastures of Plenty," simply because it best represents how far you can go with Guthrie's music from its folk roots and make it work. When you listen to Cisco Houston do "Do-Re-Mi" you are moving a notch up on the authenticity level, and with the Weavers singing "So Long (It's Been Good to Know You)" and "Jackhammer John" you get a real sense of how these songs were popularized. Of course, everytime you actually get to hear Guthrie sing on one of these tracks, such as the duet with Houston on "Hard, Ain't It Hard" you want to go listen to one of Guthrie's own albums, so those tracks tend to be a bit intrusive given the overall theme of the album.
Not everything will sit just right with you. The tempo of Country Joe McDonald's "Roll On Columbia" is just too slow for me, and I have to admit I was surprised that Joan Baez is not the one singing "Deportee," because her cover of that song is one of her better ones. But you look over the play list and it becomes clear that the old vanguard is not letting the new kids have many bites of the apple here (strange to think that in 1972 when this album first came out that Baez would be restricted to the second tier on an album like this). But whatever faults you might find with some of the tracks, the overall idea and execution and exactly what you would want to find on an album like this. There are several solid Woody Guthrie tribute albums, and this would have to be considered one of them.
The best stuff is a 6, but some drag it down.......2002-10-08
Great material in some definitive versions, but a few weaker ones as well. I have never found Joan Baez's voice appealing; maybe I can't get past her politics, but that warbling vibrato gets on my nerves. And though one wouldn't want to over-represent Cisco, his Pretty Boy Floyd is among my favorites of all his recordings. Ramblin' Jack can also ramble elsewhere as far as I'm concerned.
But the passion and commitment and fire, back when folk musicians really did think they could change the world for the better, shines through. Inspired musicianship and great material; very, very, very good stuff. A great intro, not just to Woody but to a few other forgotten talents. Go check them, expecially Cisco Houston, for the most authentic voice of America you'll hear.
Possibly the best Woody tribute album made so far..........2002-09-27
This has a nice variety of Woody's material and a nice collection of performers, some who were friends of his, not just admirers. I have grown over the decades to prefer Woody's own singing, or interpretations by Cisco Houston and Ramblin' Jack Elliot...whole albums worth. But especially for a beginner in the lore and legend of Guthrie, this is a great starter set.
OUTSTANDING for Guthrie fans and the as-yet unconverted.......2000-07-30
I bought this album for the Woody Guthrie content, I'm a big, big fan of Woody's life and works. Some of the other artists' versions of his tunes, especially Odetta's, damn near moved me to tears. This is an absolutely beautiful collection. There's nothing as moving as Odetta singing "Sometimes fruit gets rotten and falls down to the ground... there's a hungry mouth for every peach as I go ramblin' round." You just know she felt it with her heart.

Great Music.......2007-07-03
It has a great variety of songs. They are well orchestrated and fun to listen, too.
Nice No words.......2007-02-15
I didn't realize that when I bought this that it was just instrumental. However my husband loves it wordless and all. If your looking for background music or relax music this is definitely the cd for you.
good instrumental.......2006-02-28
a very pleasant and somewhat haunting cd, easy listening at it's best for western songs,cd only has 10 songs on it but they are all very good and easily worth the price. This cd would be good to play for background music also.I would like to see more of these cd's.
Nice Cowboy CD.......2003-11-03
i really like the CD. it has nice instrumentals of many classic cowboy songs. the quality is very good too. the only downfall is that the CD is only about 30 minutes long so it is quite short. but other than that, i recommend it for anyone wanting to hear these nice classic songs.
The Greatest Cowboy Songs Ever.......2000-01-09
By far, the best instrumental of Western songs I have heard. Very well done! Truely does make you feel you are back in the Old West spiritually!

I'm not really happy with this recording. Either this CD has been remastered way too much, or I don't remember the real Eddy Arnold. This really lacks the smooth voice I remember and sometimes, it seems the words are said so slowly, the music should have stopped.

The best for Eddy Arnold.......2005-08-26
In today world it is a blessing to sit or work and listen to the soothing music of Eddy Arnold. It mellows you out and you enjoy listening to the words of a great artist.

The key to the strengths and the weaknesses of Best of Roger Miller is in its subtitle: His Greatest Songs. No question, Miller's "King of the Road" and "Dang Me" were among the most innovative and entertaining songs in country music history, and his "Husbands and Wives" among the most moving. But while this set includes many of his greatest songs, they are here in rerecorded versions only, and though faithful to the original arrangements, they also lack the madcap punch and free-swinging acoustic rhythms of his mid-'60s radio hits. Which is just to say that this collection is certainly enjoyable but most likely for Roger Miller completists only. --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews:
A Great CD.......2005-09-23
My dad was a Roger Miller fan, I have been for 40+ years and now my 12 year old daughter is a huge fan. It says a lot for music when it can appeal to such a broad spectrum across the generations. Thanks Roger for the great music.
England swings with the king of the road.......2005-03-15
Roger Miller first made his mark as a songwriter when Andy Williams recorded his song, In the summertime. As a singer, his earliest successes were with novelty songs like Dang me.
When Roger started writing more serious songs, he really hit the jackpot. The song he is best remembered for, King of the road, describes a man who needs somewhere to sleep overnight. He hasn't got any money but he is willing to do two hours' work to pay for his bed. Another of his classic songs, England swings, describes his image of London as he saw it in the sixties. I don't think London was really as he describes it even then but it's a great song. Walking in the sunshine is another joyful song. Contrast those songs with Husbands and wives, a very sad song about marital problems.
Having been grateful to others who recorded his songs while he was struggling, Roger did his bit for those that followed. He helped Kris Kristofferson by being the first singer to record Me and Bobby McGee, a song that has since become a country standard but also made the pop charts when covered by Janis Joplin. He also recorded Little green apples, written by Bobby Russell.
Roger had five hits on the British pop charts (King of the road - a number one hit, Engine engine number nine, Kansas city star, England swings and Little green apples). He had an even greater number of hits on the American pop charts and more still on the country charts.
This compilation of Roger's music contains all his essential hits, together with covers of other classic songs. Although the best single CD of his music is the fill priced compilation, All time greatest hits, this budget collection will suffice for most people.
NOTE - this review is linked to more than one Roger Miller compilation. My review refers to the British release on the Spectrum label.
Not the original recordings.......2000-08-02
It's okay, but I would have preferred the originals. My fault because I neglected to listen to the samples.
Best of Roger Miller.......2000-06-20
The title says it all. If you are a fan of the "old" country, don't pass this one up.

Yeah wife's Christmas present. Hopefully I won't be in the car when she play Ms. Boone
Passionate and sweeet.......2005-09-28
Debbie's best album brought me back to my college years. But she still has the ability of causing you chills of emotions as you can still hear her voice and think of the beautiful girls I had the opportunity to date while listening to her music. You never cease to be young and romantic while your heart is enchanted by the sweet magic of her voice.
Wonderful CD.......2003-04-02
Debby Boone has one of the most beautiful voices in the music industry. The only reason I got this CD was because it has a couple of songs from her "With My Song" album I purchased in 1980. THAT album is her best Christian album in my opinion. I would love to see the "With My Song" album in CD format...
Truly inspirational!.......2001-04-11
This CD is truly sensational and long awaited for a Compilation that highlights Debby's outstanding Christian Albums from the 80's And of course the US No.1 `Smash hit' title track from 1977. Here in the UK it only reached No.48!!
As a young Christian then, the Songs inspired me when I first heard them from the relative albums they came from Notably `With My Song', `Choose Life' and `Friends for Life'. Now, some years later they still do!
What comes across for each song is that they are contemporary ballads and upbeat, in particular `Choose life' with striking lyrics of the Choice in the Gospel message.
Thanks to the compiler, each track has been chosen diligently, so on reflection this new CD does not stick to a particular style of music. But positively inspirational and uplifting.
What's more is that all the tracks on this CD are original recordings. The Lyrics are enclosed in the booklet.
Debby Boone has a gifted voice that clearly comes across on these tracks. This compilation is a must for Debby Boone fans, particularly if you do not have these tracks on CD already.
Great Collection...needs more songs!.......2001-04-07
This is a great collection of Debby's great Contemporary Christian recordings! As another reviewer indicated Debby did win 2 more Grammys after her "Best New Artist" Grammy in 1978 so she definetly wasn't a one trick pony. This CD shows why she was deserving of these Grammys. This would have been better if it had included "O Come All Ye Faithful", "Lift Him Up", "Song Of Deliverance", & "Delight In Him" but still a great collection nonetheless! Great companion CD to her "Reflections" CD released about 10 years ago!

Better than the originals!.......2005-10-20
I couldn't listen to the old Mercury originals--some of the remakes on Columbia eg "With my eyes wide open..." were better. Although this 1970's remake lack the youthful immocence of the originals they more than make up in sophistication--just what I want. But don't bother with even later remakes, after Patti is over the hill!
PATTI'S BIG HITS--RERECORDED IN THE 70S.......1999-02-12
If you are a diehard Patti Page fan who has to have everything Patti has recorded you will undoubtedly want this. But be aware all else who look at this CD that these are not the original Mercury/Columbia hits which sold millions. These are remakes done in the 70s which copy the original arrangements. They are ok if you are not familiar with the originals. If you treasure the originals you may not especially like these. These recordings are also supposed to be in STEREO but do not sound like stereo to me. If you are new to Patti Page and want to become familiar with her music this is not the place to start....rather try THE PATTI PAGE COLLECTION,VOL.I, GOLDEN HITS or GOLDEN GREATS.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent single-disc compilation.......2004-02-20
This well-compiled 1999 Wolf collection is one of the best-sounding Charlie Patton-albums on the market. Wolf Records achieves a balance here, cutting down as much surface noise as possible without sapping the dynamics of the performance, and these 69 minutes of music include almost all of Patton's best songs.
There are numerous fine Patton-compilations on the market, including Yazoo's "The Best Of Charlie [sic] Patton" and Recall's very reasonably priced double-disc "Screamin' & Hollerin' The Blues", but it is doubtful whether any of them are better than this one.
