5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Missed opportunity (but still essential).......2005-10-25

Why are there so many tracks on disc 1 that are readily available on the Sax Pax for a Sax CD? It's too bad more of the impossible to find recordings from this period couldn't have been included instead.

Otherwise, it is great to finally hear some of this material and the disc 2 live concert is a treasure. All things considered, a bargain and a must for Moondog devotees.

Also note the packaging is very attractive -- but unfortunately on my copy, the binding/glue is already falling apart so the CD trays have seperated from the cover... sometimes plastic is a better way to go...

4 out of 5 stars Moondog's last concert!.......2005-10-12

This is a professional production of an official double disc set that was released in 2004 (5 years after Hardin's death.) It looks good and has 44 enclosed pages of valuable information about Moondog, such as a detailed biography, discography, Moondog's own words about the recordings, personnel listings, lyrics, pictures and a poem that Leonard Bernstein wrote to and about Moondog.
Also seeing quotes of Benny Goodman and Frank Zappa praising Moondog's music is particularly exhilarating for a Zappa fan like myself (I had no idea.)

The first disc consists of already released material, most of which I already owned when I bought this set. This disappointed me a bit, as I'd expected additional versions of these titles provided on the back.
The set is called "The German Years," but includes 5 tracks that are taken from "Sax Pax for a Sax" - an album that was recorded in England and performed by English musicians, and consists mainly of material that was written while Moondog lived in New York. Other albums that songs have been taken from are "H'art Songs" (4 tracks,) "In Europe" (4 tracks,) "Elpmas" (4 tracks,) "A New Sound of an Old Instrument" (3 tracks,) "Big Band" (1 track) and "Bracelli" (1 track.)

The 56 minute long disc #2 is the essential music in this set as it consists of only previously unreleased material. It is Moondog's last concert, which was recorded in France on August 1st, 1999 (less than 6 weeks prior to his passing.)
The concert, which consisted of both rare and recent material, was performed on solo piano by Dominique Ponty. At times Moondog joins in on bass drum, and here and there he recites a few couplets - a nice treat. But as always, when it comes to live recordings of solo piano performances, we have to deal with intruding sounds; aside from applause we get a few hundred coughs, a squeaking door that repeatedly opens and closes, at one point the barking of a distant dog, at one point the sirens of an ambulance driving by the recording location, and believe it or not - audience members trying to clap along to one of the solo piano canons! ...but overall the sound quality is very good and clear.

I'd recommend "The German Years 1977-1999" to Moondog fans (who haven't heard his last concert,) but to people who aren't familiar with his work, this might not be the optimal place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Late Moondog.......2005-04-27

When Louis Hardin moved to Europe in 1974, he was received as visiting royalty -- unlike his home country who treated him as some sort of one-joke street-performer. For the next 25 years, until his passing in 1999, he produced an astonishing variety of music for organ, brass band, voice, piano, percussion, small chamber ensemble, and string quartet.

Disc one of this collection contains an anthology of his German recordings, and presents a clear advantage over the originals in that every track is on a different instrument. The listener never gets a chance to grow weary of any one style, allowing you instead to concentrate on the commonalities running through all of Hardin's music. As a sampler of the work done in his senior years (ages 61-83) it's a remarkable collection showing verve, inventiveness and playful iconoclasty.

Disc two presents his last concert, previously unreleased, from Arles France on August 1st 1999, just five weeks before his death. Pianist Dominique Ponty, who I believe is the daughter of famed violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, plays 34 of his pieces for piano or arranged for piano. Louis 'Moondog' Hardin himself accompanies her on tambour, a big skin drum, on several of the tunes, and recites six couplets in his rich ageless baritone.

Also included, a 44-page booklet of photos, notes, lyrics and critical comment. This is a first-class production for one of the last century's most enduring and original composers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great early-days crooning with a fine band to boot.......2005-07-25

The story of Al Bowlly--a name unfamiliar to most today--is an unusually colorful one. Born in Mozambique of ethnically diverse parents (Greek, Lebanese), he grew up in Johannesberg then traveled widely (Calcutta, Singapore, Berlin, New York), ultimately focussing his career upon London. That career began early--he left school at 14--and ended early, sadly cut short at age 42 by the London blitz in 1941. During 15 years he managed to make many hundreds of recordings, starting as an instrumentalist (banjo, ukulele, guitar), but ending up as London's favorite crooner of the 30s. He continued playing regularly throughout his career, even as he became known as a vocalist. He sang, played, and often recorded with many big (and not so big) bands, including Ray Noble's, Geraldo's, and Lew Stone's, during the transition from vocalists simply as band members to featured soloists widely known through recordings and radio.

The style of Bowlly's singing, and of his accompaniments, is pretty typical of the era: mostly high-pitched, smooth, and to modern ears a bit wispy sounding. He sang mostly sentimental ballads, but occasionally offered jump tunes, novelties, Latin, and even Hawaiian numbers. His renditions are of consistently high musical quality and his diction is essentially flawless. He recorded nearly always in English, but could and did handle such languages as Yiddish and Afrikaans. A great many of his songs are unfamiliar today, but a good sprinkling have managed to endure in the public's listening repertoire.

The present CD album offers 50 songs Bowlly sang with Ray Noble's orchestra between 1931 and 1936. The arrangements are good and the sound quality is surprisingly good for recordings of this vintage. Though high frequencies are inevitably lacking, the ear adapts rather quickly, and the absence of noticeable noise means that one can really enjoy these songs. Though I only recognized 11 of the songs (The Very Thought of You, Time On My Hands, You Ought To See Sally On Sunday, I'll String Along With You, Got a Date With an Angel, Guilty, All I Do Is Dream of You, Isle of Capri, Goodnight Sweetheart, Love Is the Sweetest Thing, and Dinner For One Please James) I enjoyed all of them at least moderately and was glad to become better acquainted with the musical spirit of that bygone era.

In general I was impressed with how hard Bowlly had to work in order to achieve his highly merited success. During those Depression times it was usually a struggle to get by, not to mention get ahead, and Bowlly was no stranger to hardship or failure (several of his recordings were rejected by various labels). Still, he persisted and tasted the benefits of public recognition, though not to the extent reached by some others of his time, such as Tino Rossi on the continent and Bing Crosby and Rudy Vallee in the U.S.

For those specially interested in the early days of crooning, in Big Band music, in popular music of the Depression-era, or in the early days of phonograph recording I can strongly recommend this 2-CD album. And it's a bargain, as well!

5 out of 5 stars Al Bowlly delivers Quality and Quantity.......2005-02-07

Al Bowlly died quite a few years before I was born and there is therefore no particular reason why I should identify with his music. Yet over the years my enjoyment of his huge legacy of recordings just grows and grows. With the exception of Bing Crosby, there is really no other male voice of the 1930's which transends the passage of so many decades of changing musical tastes. Given the fact that these recordings span the period from 1931 to 1937, this double C.D. provides surprisingly consistent recording quality. And with a total of 50 tracks to enjoy, this works out to be less than 40 U.S. cents a pop. Show me better value anywhere ! My only regret is that there are no sleeve notes, other than a listing of tracks. If there were, then some surprising detail could have been revealed. The fact that in some of the later recordings Glenn Miller was in Ray Noble's trombone section. And that the tasteful guitar solo in the poignant "Dinner For One Please, James" is by none other than George van Eps, who was still playing and recording more than 60 years later. But the dominant sound here is Bowlly's, especially when he delivers a ballad in a more suitable lower key. If you have always wanted to know why Bowlly still has a huge following more than 60 years after his death, then this collection will answer the question. Buy, relax and enjoy !

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST EVER............2004-10-24

....song of all time, by the very best "crooner" of all time and one of the best bands of all time, is featured on this release. That is "The Very Thought of You", have a listen then order the album. Another song not far behind is -
"Love is the Sweetest Thing".

3 out of 5 stars Good Value -- Reasonable Sound Quality.......2001-06-30

If you enjoy the pre-1936 Big Band sound, you may like this one. Though the style is sort of "20s hangover" -- nasal, stacatto and long intervals -- the recordings are of good quality for their time (1930 to 1935). The number of tracks alone make this 2-CD set worth the price. Al Bowley isn't my favorite, but he certainly personifies the vocal fashion of the late 20s/early 30s.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic collection for a modest price........1999-03-08

Excellent tranfers, generous number of recordings (50) highlighting the Bowlly-Noble combination in both English and American recordings from 1930-1936. No liner notes, but for those wishing to have a nice collection this is the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars I scream--let's all scream--for more Fred Waring!.......2002-02-25

Superb 1925-1928 sides by one of the very best dance orchestras of the 1920s. The sound restoration is excellent and the overall selection inspired, though I personally wish "Her Beaus Are Only Rainbows" would have found its way onto this. So it goes. With such musically magnificent numbers as the hazing-as-comedy classic "Freshie" (1925); the Spikes-Jonesesque "Bolshevik" (1926); and the superb, insane novelty "I Scream--You Scream--We All Scream for Ice Cream" (1927), no complaints are justified. Don't be misled by such titles; Waring's Pennsylvanians offered some of the 1920's most sophisticated arrangements, musicianship, and choral sounds (imagine that). The prodigiously talented singer/pianist Tom Waring (brother of Fred) is liberally featured, and a host of great soloists take their turns at the horn (well, microphone). Rich Conaty's liner notes are as helpful as can be, and the chintzy-looking package is of no consequence; it's the music that matters. A joy.

5 out of 5 stars Not for lovers of mush!.......2002-02-22

The Fred Waring I grew up hearing in the late 40s and early 50s consisted of soft, sweet, sentimental, and downright mushy choral music -- the sort of stuff that people retreating from a rather scary world (red threats, nuclear war threats, Richard Nixon) might want to listen to to calm frayed nerves. To me, it was boring then and it remains boring to me. ....
Lovers of Jazz-era music (I'm nuts about it) will love this CD, as well as its sister CD, The Broadway Years (Vol. 2). These compilations from a small San Mateo, CA, company, are not for completists -- there's nothing like that available at this time -- but the selections are (a) chronological; (b) representative; (c) in many cases unavailable from other sources; and (d) wonderfully restored. Sources for the music are apparently the released shellac discs. The only noise artifacts present are a continuous shellac hiss (think of it as a very early tape hiss). The highs are all there; the lows are there, too, without the often boomy quality which poorly equalized recordings have. However, it's really the music that counts: these guys (and eventually guys and gals) are fabulous musicians: rhythmically precise, excellent ensemble work, great arrangements. Most of the songs are laced with humor, and sometimes it's even subtle! "Any Ice Today, Lady?" is the goofiest song of the lot and is really hilarious; yet, the band never stoops to the pie-in-the-face level of Spike Jones.(....)
There are two other compilations out there: "Greatest Hits", which fills in many of the gaps in the repertoire, and apparently uses the metal stampers for the 78s as transfer sources (although the results aren't significantly superior to the results on these two CDs); and "Memorial Album", which has generally inferior transfers, but fills in a few more gaps. However, The Collegiate Years and The Broadway Years provide such a good selection of Waring's best Jazz-era recordings that they should suffice for most fans of this type of music -- that is, with the exception of crazy completists like me!

In the late 1920s, Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians were one of the most popular bands in the U.S. They toured constantly, played in Broadway shows, starred in Syncopation, the first all-talking, all-singing movie, and made numerous records. The tracks on The Broadway Years were recorded between 1929 and 1932, and include delights such as the original cast recording of the Cole Porter song "Love for Sale" from the 1930 production of The New Yorkers; "Alma Mammy," an Al Jolson take-off that parodies both Jolson's minstrel style and the college songs that were popular at the time; and "I Say It's Spinach," a song that was based on a cartoon from the New Yorker magazine. The Pennsylvanians were an excellent band capable of playing anything, from the sweet sounds of "Dancing in the Dark" to the cartoonish "The Old Man of the Mountain." Although the arrangements are more pop than jazz, they are always inventive and show a great deal of sophistication. The Broadway Years shows Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians at their best, and illuminates the period in American popular music when the frenetic 1920s styles were giving way to the smoother, swing inspired music of the 1930s. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars No mush on this CD, either!.......2002-02-26

One of the points I made straight off in my review of the companion CD to this one, "The Collegiate Years (Vol. 1)" is that the Fred Waring with whom many of us grew up gave us the impression that his style was lush and bland, whereas the reality of the situation is that his early style was rollicking and, most of all, fun! Oh, there are the Waring trademarks: superb musicianship and precise ensemble. This may sound like a sterile environment in which to have "fun", but don't believe that for a minute!
The other review in this space details a lot of the features on this CD, so I won't repeat them. What hasn't been said is that, as with the companion CD, the sound processing is superb. Sources are apparently released shellac disks, but the only noise you hear is a constant shellac hiss -- no clicks and pops. Equalization is about as natural as one could hope for.
The final item on this CD marks the beginning of a 9-year recording hiatus for the Pennsylvanians, due to Waring's then-ongoing battle for royalties owed him by broadcasters who would play his records without attribution. It's a real pity, because he continued to make music like this during these years. Since a lot of it was broadcast on radio, we can only hope that someone may, in the future, publish some of the transcriptions which, no doubt, exist.
An artifact of the aforementioned era has found its way occasionally into the MP3 world: Raymond Scott's parody of Waring entitled, in Scott's typical cumbersome style, "The Reaction of the Musicians to Meeting Waring's Pennsylvanians." I'm not at all familiar with the song they are singing (it was never recorded on 78s), but the humor is brilliant: Waring's trademark precise unison vocal ensemble is a total shambles in this version -- that is, every voice enters about a millisecond off from every other voice! The singing is exceptionally overwrought, and "hey nonny nonny" and "ha cha cha" are thrown into the lyrics. There are musical quotations from "Collegiate" at the beginning and end of the piece, too, just to give it that authentic feel. I hope that the next Scott compilation (soon to be released, they say) will include this piece. On first hearing it, I thought that Scott was ridiculing Waring; however, it now seems to me to be a tribute to Waring and his contribution to the world of pop music -- and a fitting one, at that!

4 out of 5 stars Variety galore!.......2005-08-28

Although I much prefer their more recent music, this comprehensive compilation shows you how the band evolves and the different sounds which have been added.Maybe not the ideal choice for a salsa dj, but great if you like latin music(esp. Afro-cuban sounds).

5 out of 5 stars Superb Compilation..........1999-12-19

This is a terrific introduction to Los Van Van, one of the most interesting bands in the world, for those who don't know much about them or those who have, say, one or two LVV records and want to hear more without having to buy a lot of CDs from their 30 year history. Any 2 CD compilation of a band with that long and varied a history is sure to leave out some favorites, but this set is well-chosen, particularly in the later years. Even better, it includes a fabulous 100-page plus booklet with a history of the band, lyrics in English and Spanish, discography and a list of the musicians who have been in and out of this group over the past three decades. My hat is off to the people who put this together. It is done with love and intelligence. Rare enough to see either of those. My only quibble is the absence of the some of the classic cha-chas from LVV's early period such as "De 5 a 7" but they can be had on other compilations. Also, I highly recommend LVV's new American release "Llego Van Van". It's a spectacular record, one of the classics of Latin dance music I think, which picks up just where this collection ends. Since Amazon has yet to put up any real information about this set, I'll just mention that it's two CDs, one devoted to 1969-1989, the second one to Van Van in the 90s. Hope Amazon puts up a track listing and some samples soon for other buyers. If you have Llego Van Van and are intrigued to hear more, this is well worth it!

1 out of 5 stars An unsuccessful attempt to recycle garbage........1999-12-10

Listening to this CD is a close encounter with an Unbearably Faulty Object. The producers have attempted to recycle the multiple bad-quality recordings made by this band in Cuba and the quality just isn't there. Too bad.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Value - Great Selection - Decent Sound and Notes.......2006-10-09

This is an unbeatable value. These are truly greatest hits - for example, Louis Armstrong's Potato Head Blues, Ellington's Creole Love Call, Moten Swing, Coleman Hawkins Body and Soul. If you are into this period, you probably have most of these tracks already, but at the price it's worth picking up the odd items you may be missing. If you don't have a big collection of early jazz, this is a great place to start. My only quibble would be that the selection is heavily slanted toward the 30s.

There are decent liner notes with at least track and personnel info and recording dates, if not original label info, and each cd has its own sleeve with track listings. The CEDAR sound restoration is pretty good. Certainly better than a lot of budget reissues, but there are probably better masterings on the market for particular tracks (e.g., Proper Box Hot Fives).

      2 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly disappointing.......1999-09-26

I went through college with Nat Gonella's music, which was consistently well up in the charts and MELODY MAKER polls. This CD contains none of the jazz numbers that made his recordings so good. His trumpet playing is tepid generally throughout and the famous trumpet duets that he played with brother 'Bruts' are notably absent. Nat was a standout trumpet player but this was sadly lacking in this CD. For the price, I cannot honsetly say that it is a waste of money (it's a 2-CD set), but I doubt if it will ever be played again in my foreseeable future!
