Wonders of the World
Editorial Reviews
From the Label
This album is the most ROCK a cappella recording ever! Double-barrelled "vocal guitars" and relentless vocal percussion fire-power a tremendous all-original song line-up. "I'm Right" heads the list with attitude, an irresistable radio-friendly hook and danceable rhythm - wow! "Aggression" is classic album rock, balanced by some tender love songs - "I Promise You," "Halo" and "Few and Far Between." Don't miss this breakthrough album!
About the Artist
five o'clock shadow, a pop/rock band from Boston, is leading a growing pack of underground talent that's proving you don't need instruments to rock. Taking advantage of technology previously reserved for instrumentalists, these five guys with turbo-pipes are making even the most skeptical, die-hard rockers like a cappella music. five o'clock shadow's sound is pure alchemy. You'll think you hear electric guitars and keyboards, electric bass and drums...but the only instruments in use are the...

On their follow-up to 1999's Right Back, the Long Beach Dub Allstars continue stirring their musical melting pot. Wonders of the World combines heavy dub, shimmery pop, bouncy ska, and aggro alt-rock into a disc that roller-coasters between spaced out ("Wonders Dub II" and "Grass Cloud") and punked out ("No Way"). The ex-Sublime members also pulled in some talent from the hip-hop world, getting will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas on "Sunny Hours" and Chali2na from Jurassic 5 on "Life Goes On." Even with all the special appearances and genre-crossing, though, the Allstars don't crack the surface, covering the same ground that bands like Sugar Ray and 311are already treading. While the band does flow seamlessly between rock and reggae, Wonders of the World feels coated in a tepid, radio-friendly gloss that, despite a few bright spots, dulls by the end of the disc. --Jennifer Maerz

I'm Impressed!.......2006-08-24
I'm sure you've heard, Long Beach Dub Allstars is not Sublime. In some songs there is little bit of the Sublime style, but just a tiny bit; I didn't expect them to be Sublime either. I expected something totally different from what LBDA really is. And I like them alot more than I thought I would.
awesome album.......2005-12-21
When you buy this, don't expect quite the same as Sublime, but it's still awesome in its own right. Some songs are remniscent of Sublime but there's a lot more dub and reggae. I can't say the singer is quite as good as Bradley but he's still quite good and I love listening to this album on my ipod. It's worth the money just for "Sunny Hours," "Listen to DJ's," and "Lonely End" but the other songs are awesome too and this CD is a hell of a lot better than 99% of the crap they play on the radio. This is one of my newest favorite bands in its own right.
Pathetic.......2005-10-05
I Bought this cd beacause there first cd right back was great.
Theres one good song on this cd the rest suck.
Right back was nice and fresh almost like sublime this one sounds
totally diffrent its offspring meets britney spears meets sublime there vocals are okay but music wise they sucked on this cd.
All Around Mastery.......2005-01-25
Most people don't like LBDAS because they expect to hear Sublime. Long Beach Dub Allstars is not Sublime, but they are a collection of incredibly talented musicians with a wide range of styles. This album has everything, great songs by both Opie and RAS-1. Does anyone know if this album is out of print?? I'm not able to find any place that stocks it.
Best Cd In A Long Time.......2004-04-29
Lately, I have realized that not a lot of real good music have been put out in the past years. One day i was searching in the mall for a new cd i would want to try out. I rembered hearing about a band formed with some of the remaining members of Sublime. I found it in the store and brought in home. The first few times I didn't really like it. After a few times I started to like more. After like a month I would listen to it at least once a day. the cd starts out great With Sunny Hours feat Will I Am and Rolled up, both songs at least up to par with good Sublime songs. It gets even better with songs like Life Goes On, It Aint easy and No Way. The cd finishes a little slow with another suuny hours and grass clouds which is instrumental but still hits some good songs like talkin the truth and kablammin it. Exept for the two just mentioned, this cd is all A material and should be a part of any Sublime liking fan or any fan of just music. It doesn't get that much attention but is definitely worth it. plus it has an awesome cd cover.

Album Description
The title says it all, 'The Best One Hit Wonders In The World'. While most artists aim to have a string of hits, here is proof that you can achieve pop immortality with just one. Ranging from the sublime to the, quite frankly, ridiculous, this fantastic double-CD brings you no less than 44 one hit wonders from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. There'll be no argument with the inclusion of, Cutting Crew '(I Just) Died In Your Arms', Deep Blue Something 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' (1996 - No.1 UK Hit), Nena '99 Red Balloons' (1984 - No.1 UK Hit), Trio 'Da, Da, Da' (I Don't Love You, You Don't Love Me, Ha, Ha, Ha) (1982 - No.2 UK Hit), Men Without Hats 'The Safety Dance' (1983 - No.6 UK Hit), The Knack 'My Sharona' (1979 - No.6 UK Hit) and many, many more. 44 tracks in all. Virgin. 2003.

Bemusement.......2004-11-13
I'm aware of a few of these artists and I've heard a few of their OTHER hits... Collections like this one are a great way to introduce people to some of the great music that's been out there, but the title 'one hit wonder' is so often fragrantly misused. It's more often an indication of the ignorance of the titler than anything to do with the band they're describing. Rather than being a collection of 'one hit wonders' this is just another conveniently titled collection of fine pop music from over the years.
I bet you can find at least a dozen "new" one hit wonders.......2004-05-02
"Best One Hit Wonders in the World Ever" is an interesting collection because it comes from over the pond in England, which explains why it has songs by groups like Cutting Crew and the Mock Turtles. But there is more of an eclectic spirit behind the selection of these 44 one hit wonders. To be sure there is something of the international flavor alluded to in the title with Nena's "99 Red Balloons," Piero Umiliani's "Mah Na Mah Na," Lou Basil's "Mambo No. 5," and Los Bel Rio's "Macarena." You have televison represented with the Rembrandts' "I'll Be There For You" and Belouis Some's "Imagination" from "Pretty in Pink."
There are some blasts from the past going back to "Rhythm Of The Rain" by the Cascades, "Fire" courtesy of the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, "Venus" by Shocking Blue, "Spirit In The Sky" by Norman Greenbaum, "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" from Edison Lightouse, "All By Myself" by Eric Carmen, and "Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton. But most of those have been around so long that if you were into music in the 1960s and 1970s you should already have most of those. You can toss in some quirky hits like Tony Basil's "Mickey" and Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and there is also a decent sample of more recent one hit wonders as well, with the Knack's "My Sharona," Men Without Hats doing "The Safety Dance," "It's Raining Men" by the Weather Girls, and "Runaway" by Soul Asylum.
But ultimately, what is going to make or break this CD in your mind are going to be the one hit wonders that you never heard before. You have "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" by Cutting Crew, "Mary's Prayer" by Danny Wilson, and "Break My Stride" by Matthew Wilder. Actually, all I really need to say is that I think you will have no problem finding a dozen tracks in this collection that you would appreciate adding to your music library. This is true if you have a dozen or more of them already, which should be the case with just about anybody with a decent music collection. There are not that many #1 songs in this collection (more from the English side as near as I can tell), so this really does go for a wider variety of one hit wonders. Check it out.
Great Collection Of Some Classic Tunes.......2004-04-11
Well, I'd like to start off by saying that if you're looking for some hard to find hit songs from the 60's through the 90's, you won't go wrong with this collection! All of the original hits are here as you remember them. I do have just one disagreement with this collection. Eric Carmen should have not been included on a disc of artists that are "one hit wonders." Anyone who knows anything about music would have never included him in this collection. How about such hits as Change Of Heart, Make Me Lose Control, She Did It and Hungry Eyes from the movie Dirty Dancing. Eric Carmen has quite a collection as a solo artist as well as his work with the Raspberries. So, aside from this mistake, the songs chosen here are a pretty good retrospective of just some of the one hit wonders from the 60's/90's. I really don't think that you can compile a definitive "one hit wonders" collection unless you broke it down by individual years. However, this is a pretty good start. In short, if you appreciate top 40 music that covers several decades, then get this collection. You won't be sorry.

They used to call it democracy, now they call it approaching fascism.......2005-09-03
If you are looking for music with real progressive political content, with historical foundation, with passion, anger and humanity, do not miss Bruce Cockburn and do not, I repeat, do not miss this album.
His 18th Album.......2004-12-20
(42.5 minutes)
Now if you ask me, and quite a few perceptive individuals do on a frighteningly regular basis, then this here Bruce Cockburn album represents his output at the tail end of a strong songwriting period and was about to usher in a period that appears to have been rather dry for our Canadian friend. Big Circumstance followed this one two years later and feels a bit like Mr. Cockburn was flatfooted at the time, but World of Wonders captured a group of tunes that are obviously born of creative juices that were in a rolling boil.
"Call it Democracy" is one of them tunes where he manages to slip yet another naughty word in and, truth be node, it kind of fits. In fact, it drives home the point he's attempting to make (and it maintains the rhyming lyrics to boot). Mama gets kind of flustered when he keeps putting out records what have them naughty words on them, but they are selectively sprinkled and add a certain degree of spice. Kind of like when you have eggs in the morning and you put just a couple drops of Tabasco® Sauce. There ain't many folk on the street who know who Bruce Cockburn is, but when you find one who does they inevitably know "Wondering Where the Lions Are," and probably "If I had a Rocket Launcher," and if by chance they know of a third song, then this is the one. He's released eleventy hundred good songs, but this is the extent of what the bulk of the herd knows.
If you are a devoted fan, then it is your moral obligation to purchase this (and other) Bruce Cockburn album in large quantities and distribute them to the people you know and love. It will be doing them a favor and, even if you purchase this album outside of Canada, some of the proceeds will find their way back to Bruce and it will assist in shoring up that weak Canadian loonie they got up there. In fact, if you have a chunk of change to spare, I'd suggest you simply buy this album in industrial quantities and go to the nearest urban street corner and pass it out to all you encounter, be they friend or foe. That is a testimony as to what I think of this here album.
Trouble With Normal, Stealing Fire, and World Of Wonders were Bruce Cockburn's early 80s trilogy of political albums. They captured a period in which he was writing songs that addressed the disparity betwixt the haves and the have nots. He went on to other things after that and has been exploring several other themes in subsequent albums, but them three really struck at the root of the inequity situation the world sees itself in. If you don't like the stark reality of the pain of inequity, then maybe you'd better give this one a miss, however if you are comfortable with the Bruce Cockburn style of calling a spade a spade and not mamby pambying around with difficult ort uncomfortable subject matter, then this one is yet another gem of an album.
As I said earlier, Mama don't like this one too much because he uses another (single) naughty word, but Junior and the twins love this album because each time that song comes on they hush up and get ready for him to say it and then when he does, they fall in the floor with peels of laughter and side-splittin' laugh-educed convulsions of sheer joy. See, we Huckabees don't allow that kind of talk inside the double wide trailer, but make an exception to Bruce Cockburn because we like his music pretty good no matter what album it's from or what profanity he deems fit to record.
I say this is one of his best, even though it took a few years for me to get to this point. Looking back no I might even say it's up near my favorite.
Good.......2004-06-14
"People See Through You" and "Call it Democracy" are the best.
Alittle bit overproduced, but still a gem in its own way.
A Synthesized Rocker.......2003-05-30
Over the years Bruce Cockburn has shown many sides of his musical personality including spiritual balladeer, folkie and rocker. `Word Of Wonders' capitalizes well of on his `rocker' phase with the addition of electronic musical instruments. Sometimes the combination is grand, while at other times the songs get lost in a sea of synthesizers.
Several of Cockburn's most visceral and punchy rockers are included here. `Call It Democracy' is a scathing commentary of wealthy countries for abusing lesser countries with monetary loans. The funky bass guitar lines work well on `World Of Wonders.' The kick-butt `People See Through You' reaches a feverish dance tempo. These compositions make heavy use of the synthesized drum kit, and the song structures are solid enough to support the additional weight.
For my money, `Lily Of The Midnight Sky' is Cockburn's most vigorous love ballad. Again, the omnipotent synthesized snare drum and guitar power chords reinforce the composition's sense of desperation.
Unfortunately, `World Of Wonders' begins to meander during the latter half. The Caribbean dance tempo of `See How I Miss You' and plodding `Dancing In Paradise' mar an otherwise solid album. The plight of Latin America (Santiago At Dawn) has been addressed before, where `Down Here Tonight' bounces along gingerly, but the chorus is over complicated and frankly, silly.
Technical Note: Bob Ludwig does another outstanding job mastering. The quiet musical attributes of songs such as `Berlin Tonight' are immaculate.
The Worst of the Best.......2003-04-19
I love Bruce Cockburn's music and I have 10 or 15 of his CDs and I love them all...except this one. Not a good track on the album, which was all the more disappointing because I had such high expectations based upon the rest of the albums. But nobody's perfect, eh?

Album Description
Continuing Ace U.K.'s release program for Rick Wakeman's President recordings, here is "The Seven Wonders Of The World", recorded in 1994 and 1995.
In keeping with some of his earlier A&M recordings, Rick returns to the concept album. This instrumental song cycle sets out to capture the particular mood of each of the seven marvels of the ancient world and the atmosphere of their individual time and place in our history.
Each track is prefaced by a short narrative delivered by the actor Garfield Morgan. The strong modern orchestral rock style has been created entirely on digital keyboards and features the renowned Wakeman dexterity throughout.

RICKS FINE WORK.......2003-08-29
RICK HAS ONCE AGAIN BROUGHT FORTH A CREATIVE PIECE OF MUSIC ON THIS CD AND ALSO AT THE SAME TIME GIVES US SOME INTERESTING HISTORY OF THE SEVEN WONDERS.
IT'S NOT HIS BEST WORK BUT STILL THE SAME VERY ENJOYABLE, AND AS ALWAYS, IT'S ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THE GENIUS OF RICK.WELL WORTH THE PURCHASE PRICE.
HIstoricaly Hypnotic.......2003-08-21
If you are intriguiged by the incredible efforts of our forborours then this is your work. Rick Wakeman has researched these great works and focused on what they have meant to the people at the time, from the Great Light House to the Temple of Zeus. I am very impressed at how his voice are followed by the music.
This is an example of Rick Wakeman's more human musical track. If you want to travel in time and visualize what these ancient marvels meant to their people, you should hear this.

Quite Good.......2001-11-19
Rick Wakeman may still be best known for his albums with Yes. I agree that this was the highlight of his career, but he has produced any number of impressive solo disks. I can't rate this up there with the excellent remake of Journey to the Centre of the Earth, but it's quite good. The songs are a little "spacey" for my taste, but they keep my attention. The spoken introductions by one Garfield Morgan is a nice touch.
Wakeman in a more relaxed mood.......2001-11-10
Fans of Wakeman's "Yes" era who discover this album without trying any of his other solo work may be disappointed. It's not the high-energy Wakeman one would expect. It's much more laid back and "new age" sounding than "Six Wives" or "Journey". It's closer in feel to "Myths and Legends", although the narration, provided by the same narrator as on "Journey", evokes memories of his better works. The basic story is, he wrote these tracks to evoke images of the seven wonders of the world, only one of which still remains. And that's part of the problem. I believe one of the better tracks is the "Great Pyramid" sequence, which might have been influenced by pictures of the Pyramids. Other "wonders" aren't as evocative of their names, probably because they no longer exist. Don't pick this up as your first exposure to solo Wakeman, but his fans will love it.

useless series, great music.......2002-04-10
The PBS series was nothing to write home about *yawn*. However, these recordings are beautiful and say more about the depth, majesty and beauty of african culture than a wandering journalist could in thousands of words. Wonderful rhythms from the south to the north from deep native beats to arabic hip-gyrators. Great fun because it is not country specific and has a lot of variety. Everyone I give it to has to buy their own copy!
Great offering!.......2001-03-21
I can see where Paul Simon got his inspiration for Graceland. This is modern African music, and is very listenable. If you have seen the Lion King or listened to Graceland then you know what to expect. The album starts off very strong, but lags a little at the end. The mix of styles could be a little better distributed, making it a better experience. Overall a great sampling of modern African music.
If you think this one's good..........2000-06-15
I like the artists and the selections on this soundtrack to the PBS series, if only Mr. Gates would have shut his mouth when he was there. I rated it 4**** because of his stupidity and believe that you, the buyer, should support the artists on this soundtrack and buy their albums, all of which are excellent. Jeffrey Oreyema, Salif Keita, Ali Farka Toure are my personal favorites. Africa is a beautiful place with great musicians, all of which do not need to be watered down with insipid questions by a man who thought he knew all about Africa before he got there. If PBS makes any more series like this one, I won't watch PBS again...
Amazing Collection - You MUST Buy This CD!.......1999-12-22
I must have listened to this CD a dozen times the first day I got it. The entire CD is an amazing collection of African music, an outstanding introduction for newcomers to music of this continent. "Into Africa", "Drive", "Soundiata", and "Sou" have such powerful rhythms, they will not leave you. And the musicians are superstars: Angelique Kidjo, Boubacar Traore, Ali Farka Toure and Hamza El Din. I only wish that "Into Africa" were four minutes longer, and that there were some tracks from Salif Keita or Geoffrey Oryema, my personal favorites. Definitely buy this album, and fall in love with the music of Africa.

Customer Reviews:
The GREATEST group ever.......2003-05-29
When you first look at these guys, you think "Oh, another teeny-bopper guy group." You couldn't be more wrong! They are so amazingly good, I saw them in concert at my school and my jaw just dropped. I even talked to one of the guys after, he was sooo nice. I highly recommend getting this album!
THE DEFINITIVE Vocal Band album........2002-11-21
I didn't believe that these guys were a cappella when I first heard this album. In fact, I got into an argument with my friend who was playing it for me; there was NO WAY those were vocals.
Okay, so I had to eat a fistful of crow later.
It wasn't until I saw FOCS in concert that I became a true believer...and now, a complete convert, I spread the gospel. You MUST OWN this album. Not just if you're an a cappella/vocal band fan, if you're a rock fan, period. Paul, Oren, Stack, Dan, and Mike do tweak their vocals with mics and distortion, but they are at the heart of it all, and they're phenomenal. Needless to say, I haven't ever heard anyone like them. It's hard to pick best cuts off of this one...from HALO (Oren delivers Stack's kick-ass tribute to his wife) to Paul's I'M RIGHT (some days, you've gotta have an attude) to the thoughtful INSIDE HER MOUTH to Stack's INTERLUDE #3/RHYMES WITH ORANGE ("instrumental" jam session, sans instruments), you can't lose.
Take it to the gym and get a good workout, put it on at a party, pop it in your discman on the way to work...this one will live in your rotation, I promise.
Straight-up Rock, with a twist.......2001-03-06
If you've gotten this far, you already know that FOCS is a talented A Cappella group. They concentrate on creating a sound like traditional rock bands...guitars, bass, percussion, and lead vocals. They achieve this goal quite well, through some terriffic vocal work and a little help from the Engineering department. Many of their songs (title track in particular) remind me of Yes and early Rush. My favorite track, Interlude #3, sounds like it was lifted directly off of a Steve Vai record. Very impressive all around, and worth the money.
Five O'Clock Shadow's new CD is AWESOME.......2001-02-04
Wonders Of the World truly sounds like they have a full band.. vocalizations are incredible. Best song: "I'm Right." Definitely get this or another CD of theirs, it's well worth it!!
This CD displays FOCS' amazing a capella talents.......2000-08-19
The first time I discovered the a cappella sounds of Five O'Clock Shadow, was when they came to my school and performed two years ago. Ever since then I've been hooked. Their sound is so different from anything I've ever heard. "Wonders of the World" takes this group to a new level. You think you hear electric guitars, drums, and other instruments but in fact it's the voices of the band members. The title track is a great song with a great beat. "Few and Far Between," the third track, slows the pace down a little as a heartfelt song. One of my favorite tracks, "I'm Right," includes a great lead vocal by Paul Pampinella. (By the way, what rhymes with latte? You'll have to check out the CD on that one.) "Aggression" has a distinct and edgy sound and includes amazing vocal percussion. "What's it All About" was one of my favorite songs from Five O'Clock Shadow's previous album "So There" (which is also great, by the way). And although the track on both albums is the same song, I like the sound of this new one even better. Throughout the CD, there are three interludes, which have no words, but showcase the group's amazing voices in a different way. The third interlude in particular shows David Stackhouse's talent as the vocal percussionist. And even when you think the CD is over, there's a little surprise at the end, which is very creative. You'll have to buy the CD to find out, but I'll give you a hint: Look at track 7. This CD is a must have for any a cappella fan and a great album for anyone else because of it's amazing sound. There is no real way to describe it; you just have to listen.

Customer Reviews:
skronky wonderland.......2007-05-04
it might only be 13 minutes, but this is definitely a full album in terms of how it sticks in your mind. every track is a winner, and the best ones are packed with a frenetic energy you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere. I've listened to this record for years, and it hasn't gotten old. my favorite tracks are "do what you pay me for", "clifton" and "francine". wonderfully inventive, catchy, complex, and abrasive. this album might be the best kept secret in rock and roll.
historical!.......2005-12-10
this cd is an awesome fastpaced intensive romp through hyperactive aggressive hipster prog-rocknroll. enough adjectives? one of the best things to ever come from orange county, CA. mix devo, polysics, and the locust with angsty frivolous indie kids and that's probably a good start to where this album goes. it really is historically significant and musically genius, unlike most other generic wanna-be-hip rocknroll crap.
feeling hyperactive? this will more than suit your needs........2003-12-21
Miracle Chosuke is quite an oddity, releasing such a thing like this. Is it an EP? No, it can't be -- it feels too much like a complete album. Is it an LP? No, it can't be -- although there's nine songs, each last only about a minute each. Well, what is it then? I think it's safe to say that "7/8 Wonders of the World" completely defies catagorization in that area.
Even so, I'm leaning more toward this being an actual LP -- it really and truly does feel like a whole album, even though it's only about thirteen or so minutes altogether.
The music itself is varied; "Gonk" is a pretty good opener with an unmatched sense of urgency; the post-punky guitars smack you in the face left and right, and when the drums kick in, you won't be able to resist either tapping your feet or dancing like a depraved monkey.
"Clap" is another highlight. It's sounds like some sort of lost spy theme. And then again, it doesn't. But one thing is for sure... well, it's really freaking catchy.
Other standouts include "Do What You Pay Me For," a song about male prostitution, "Francine," the poppiest and longest song on here (an astonishing two minutes!), "Loop," a harsh outburst that can certaintly match anyone's bad mood, and "Nemesis," the best song on here. Sure, it's an instrumental, but it's so pretty and soothing, and also the perfect way to end a rather good album.
