5 out of 5 stars The start of Petula's French career.......2003-02-07

These recordings, laid down between 1959 and 1961, are Petula?s earliest French recordings. Petula moved to France because she felt her British career was not going the way she wanted. Needing a new challenge, she might have chosen America, but Dalida had been very successful in the French charts with covers of Petula?s British hits. So France became Petula?s new base and she has lived there ever since.

Several of these songs are translations of British and American songs, including Papayer (Mangos ? Rosemary Clooney), Tango de l?Esquimau (Never do a tango with an Eskimo ? Alma Cogan), Prends mon Coeur (A fool such as I ? originally a country hit for Hank Snow, but a pop hit for Elvis) which was a French top ten hit for Petula, Moi j?prefere l?amour a tout ca (What do you want ? Adam Faith) and Non et non (No ? Doris Day).

Petula and Dalida both recorded Garde-moi la derniere danse (Save the last dance for me - The Drifters). Both of them had huge French hits with the song.

Marin, like Petula?s British number one hit Sailor, was a translation of the German song Seemann, which was a German and American hit for Lolita. It was Petula?s biggest French hit up to that point, reaching number two.

This is a wonderful collection. It may not be the best of Petula?s French music, but it is still of a high quality and the original records were successful enough to establish Petula as a credible French recording artist.
