Album Description

It's been said "You can't judge a book by its cover," but in the case of the album "Star Eyes," you can judge the music on this CD by its cover. Joan Bender is beautiful, and it is safe to say her jazz vocals on this album are even more so. Like a brea th of fresh air into the jazz scene, this double-album of 16 songs (on 15 tracks) contains a variety of jazz standards, bossa n ova tunes and originals that display Ms. Bender's unusual amount of vocal versatility. First on the list is her spectacular sc atting, reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald and Anita O'Day on the Cole Porter standard "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Secondly are h er delightful interpretations of Brazilian bossa nova classics such as "Summer Samba" and "My Little Boat" that are in the clas s of the great Brazilian vocalist Astrud Gilberto (of "Girl from Ipanema" fame). Third is the cool jazz phrasing she evokes on "Time After Time" with inflections similar to Chet Baker and Blossom Dearie. Fourth, and most impressive, is her sense of swi ng on t he tracks of "Cherokee," "Lullaby of Birdland" and "Bird Alone" that many die hard jazz fans into Sarah Vaughan and Abbey Linco ln will savor. The influence of legendary singers on Ms. Bender is apparent, and she adds layers of feeling and her own style into the mix. Perhaps Ms. Bender has more than "Star Eyes." Perhaps she just might be the definition of a star.

I have a number of tracks from my CD collection on my PC at work and tracks from this one are the ones I play the most. After so many times of listening Joan's phrasing and tone still has the capacity to surprise. Can't wait for the next CD. I intend to visit New York next year and so far the only fixed point on my itinerary is Cafe Mae on a Friday. My only complaint is not about the CD but the fact that Joan has not come and sung to us in the UK!

What a wonderful voice this artist has, as all God's children do! I pray for those who can only speak criticism, but not sing the praises of the Lord and the Lord's children. Although this artist is not singing church hymns, she fills every jazz song with soul, joy and love. Her singing reminds me of Ella Fitzgerald, a woman who also endured much hate based on how she looked and the ideals she stood for. I pity those of you who cannot appreciate the voice of a child of God. I'll pray for you.

I can't believe this album's sales rating is only 172,060!! It's so unbelievably good it ought to at least be in the top 100,000...especially with such a high customer review rating and the haunting vocal similarity to such stars as Ella
Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and even Barbra Streisand (in her more recent albums). If I could give it six stars, I would, but since I can't give it the rating it deserves I'll give it a 1, because it will always be Number 1 in my heart. I only hope word-of-mouth will be sufficient to bring this incredible album into the homes of the untold masses who haven't yet discovered the wonder that is Joan Bender.

I just got Joan Bender's CD "Star Eyes" and I'm very excited
about this new star on the jazz scene.

Her voice is so upbeat and clear and also at times so sultry
and soulful. She has the best of both emotions in her range.

The samba rendition of "So Nice" and the bossa nova "My Little Boat"(O Barquinho) are refreshing and innovative.

In the haunting "Laura" and the oh-so romantic "Time After Time"
I was taken to another place entirely.

The rest of the album is very enjoyable, but I won't describe it. Surprise yourself.

The History label has put out several box sets of 40 jazz CDs. I have three and plan to buy more.

Compared to the other two History label box sets I have, The Cradle of Jazz and The Big Band Box, the recordings in From Swing to Bebop are more recent than the other two, and so the sound quality is also markedly improved, although by no means flawless by today's standards.

As in the other two, this box set gives a good overview of the leading musicians of the time with two CDs by each of Charlie Parker, Django Reinhardt, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Ben Webster, and three CDs of music by Fats Navarro. Notably absent is bebop legend Dizzy Gillespie, although Gillespie can be heard on a few of the tracks featuring other musicians.

This collection is heavier on swing than it is with bebop, and purists would probably find fault with some of the selections and ommissions. However, given the price, I think any jazz fan can easily supplement gaps left behind in From Swing to Bebop and still save a bundle of cash as compared to trying to buy the music by all of these artists individually.

The medley, To Oz? To Oz! features four arrangements of Maclean are that are quickly becoming a hit with regional radio and club listeners. Somewhere Over the Rainbow begins slow, cool, and beautiful, and then picks up the pace with hip, underlying riffs in 5/4 time ala Dave Brubeck's Take 5. Leslie began the arrangement a long time ago with that particular rhythm in mind. The melody becomes more angular, but remains as beautiful as ever. "It gave the melody a different world in which to exist, much like Oz itself," Maclean said. Be prepared for a musical adventure, as We're Off to See the Wizard takes you on a surprise journey. Disguised in a minor versus a major key, it awakens your curiosity. Percussionist Jerry Pollock kicks off If I Only Had a Brain with a driving funky rock rhythm. Ding Dong the Witch is Dead presents itself with a Bebop-style head and a lyrical beginning.

Other highlights include: A Night in Tunisia, A Child is Born, Billie's Bounce, Poinciana, I Loves You, Porgy, Chichèn-Itzà, and Roll in the Hay. Chichèn-Itzà; with its Latin rhythm and Roll in the Hay were also composed by Maclean. The latter is a playful combination of a little country, a little jazz, and a little rock-n-roll that was influenced by an Oliver Nelson tune entitled Hoe Down. On That's Time Enough, Maclean partners with two impressive musicians: Bob Bowman on bass, and Maclean's husband Jerry Pollock on percussion. Maclean admires Bob Bowman for his musicality, imagination and identifiable style. "He understood the arrangements right away. I would love to kidnap him from Karrin Allyson," Leslie said. Jerry's playing adds tremendous musical excitement. He really pays attention and listens to the music. I've never found another drummer that can come close to what Jerry can do with fills and transitions," Maclean said.

Now with a second album "That's Time Enough", the Leslie MacLean Trio with Leslie on piano, her husband Jerry Pollock on drums and percussion, Bob Bowman on bass performing some upbeat and exciting jazz compostions...some American standards and a few MacLean originals...all arrangements penned by Leslie MacLean with a wonderful nostalgic surprise...composers like Buddy Bernier, Dizzy Gillespie, Thad Jones, Charlie Parker, Nat Simon and the Gershwin Brothers George and Ira, not bad company to be in.

The nostalgic surprise is a wonderful medley entitled "TO OZ? TO OZ!", featuring four well known tunes "SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW", "WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD", "IF I ONLY HAD A BRAIN", "DING, DONG, THE WITCH IS DEAD", over seventeen minutes in length from "The Wizard of Oz", the 1939 film classic with Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Frank Morgan and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch...join the MacLean Trio as we travel down the Yellow Brick Road and Over the Rainbow enjoying Leslie's signature style as the group follows her lead.

Among the highlights are three original compositions by MacLean "CHICHEN-ITRA", "ROLL IN THE HAY" and the title tune "THAT'S TIME ENOUGH", the latin flavor on the one, then some funky hoe-down country, rock, with a smidgen of jazz is a blast and finally for last is pure jazz just the way we like 'em...plays like fine wine and flows very easily on the ears...don't take my word for it, sit back and listen to an outstanding and accomplished jazz pianist make this her own...now try on a Dizzy Gillespie tune "A NIGHT IN TUNSIA", mixed with the proper ingredients you can feel the groove, leaving jazz lovers wanting more of the same..."POINCIANA", was always a favorite of mine...ever since Henry Mancini recorded this early in his career, now we have another wonderful arrangement and performance that will leave you drifting toward a tropical island...MacLean serves up twelve unforgettable performances, completely gets under your skin and you're loving every minute of it.

        The moment I received this album and put it on my CD player, I knew that I had found a treasure... This guitar/accordion/ saxophone/bass-infested delicacy is a feast for the ear where intricate tangos mix freely with avant-garde fluidity and jazzy intaglios to create magnificent tableaux of fresh verve and exuberant vitality. Surprisingly classical but, at the same time, audaciously new. This is a great recording from these five independent, improvisational artists, to be had and savoured all summer long!

        Guitarrasalto is a surprising journey through the country side of acoustic fusion. Based in and returning often to American roots, the journey connects many diverse forms from many remote regions of the World.

        The music often soars, catching-up the listener in its eclectic flourishes. The flight is enjoyable and the takeoffs and landings are skillfully executed.

        An instrumental album full of unexpected mixtures. The title is a little misleading until you think of the several possible translations, all of which may apply at one time or another-"Guitar Assault, Guitar Jump, Guitar Infection" -or even all within the same tune.

        But there is also some sweetness, some warmer textures built around the electric and acoustic guitarras, great horns and accordion and slappy bass playing, indeed a combination of playing precision and surprizing right angles in the arrangements.
