Brenda Lee's career began at the tender age of just 5 singing her heart out in church with the Master Worker's Quartet in Georgia. One of the biggest pop stars of the early '60s and while she made few recordings of note after the mid-60's, the best of her first decade is fine indeed, encompassing not just the pop ballads that were her biggest hits, but straight country and some surprisingly fierce rockability. Also included are some of his older works from before and during the cinema years like "Good Luck Charm", "Love Me Tender" and "Old Shep". I am a huge Elvis fan, especially his love songs and gospel music. This CD is excellent and is a very comprehensive collection of his love songs. Even songs that were made famous by other artists, are sung well by him. His renditions are a pleasure to listen to. There is only one Elvis!

About half the songs are great old songs I'm familiar with, the other half are songs made famous by other artists and most are clangers for Elvis that are painful to listen to.

This was more than I had bargained for- I was after a few of the individual songs, and find that the whole CD is well-worth it. Now I'm searching out others of the same genre. Thumbs-up to the maker(s) of these CD's of sings that are hard to find, but part of one's life!

I bought this compilation because of the cute number, Summertime, Summertime. The song closest to this, in the rock'n'roll genre, is Martian Hop. Martian Hop is by the Ran-Dels. Both songs feature a small vocal ensemble that recites a string of nonsense syllables. In Summertime, this is, "Summertime, summertime, sum-, sum-, summertime." In Martian Hop, this is, "Buh-buh me-me-me, buh-buh me-me-me." I also bought this compilation because it contains Sunny Afternoon, a fine offering from the Kinks. A pleasant surprise was Beach Party. Beach Party is sung by Annette Funicello, America's sweetheart in an era before Meg Ryan and Reese Witherspoon.

But there are some noteable omissions. This compilation should have also contained The Zombies' excellent version of Summertime, the Gershwin composition. Also missing is Sly and the Family Stone's, Hot Fun in the Summertime. And a glaring omission is the classic, Summertime Blues by Eddie Cochrane. And then, a very unfortunate oversight is the lack of Robin Ward's anthemic, Wonderful Summer.

I normally don't rate CDs, but this one is an exceptional value for those who like 50s & 60s pop music. Eight of these are on my permanent list for my MP3 player (approx 200 from this genre) and I have 14 of them rated as 4 or 5 stars on my computer favorites.

This CD contains 25 tunes straight from summer. Feel the tingle of the noxema, and bring on the hot days, sunglasses, pool volleyball and sand between your toes. The selections are a little bit uneven, though most of them are obvious classics, a few will grow on you, and there were just a couple that were sorta "huh?" An excellent value just looking for a backyard pool party and a perfect summer day, nearly 70 minutes of pure summer. FAR better than Martha Stewart's summer selection CD, which contains only 14 songs and is a very odd mix. Beware that classics probably translates to "oldies" for the under 40 set (and don't you just hate that part?)

There's many notable summer *classics* to be found on "25 All-Time Greatest Summer Songs", and a few definitely worth mentioning: "Summer In The City" (Lovin' Spoonful), "Sunny Afternoon" (The Kinks), "In The Summertime" (Mungo Jerry), "Here Comes Summer" (Jerry Keller), "Dancing In The Streets" (Martha & The Vandellas) and not forgetting the beautiful, "Theme From A Summer Place" (Percy Faith & His Orchestra). The rest of the CD, however, is rather forgettable. For this listener there's just too many 'fillers' included that *don't* deserve the 'All Time Greatest Summer Songs" tag. Most are lifted from the vintage rock n' roll period, and whereas I have a vested interest in that particular genre, some tracks haven't stood the test of time well. Some are just downright awful. There's a couple of 'novelty' songs here too that have no right being placed on a track listing with the likes of Percy Faith, The Kinks and Mungo Jerry. "Wombling Summer Party" anyone?

It's worth buying for the better songs I previously mentioned. Still, you'd be better off shopping around because this isn't the best summer CD available.

ROCK, RHYTHM AND DOO WOP is an excellent collection for fans of rock & roll TOP 40 radio. The majority here were top sellers in their day and got the most airtime. By those parameters alone, they would be considered "the greatest."

Main criticisms--
Since these tunes are more likely to appear on various artists compilations, even the beginning collector may already own a good percentage of them. Additionally, the three CDs here could easily have accomodated 90 songs, instead of 66.

The 64-page long-box style book is quite excellent-- packed with full page photos and lots of interesting details. Sound quality of the transfers is very good, as well. Altogether, this is a nice package of rock & roll and doo wop standards.

The best thing that I can tell you about this collection is that so many people wanted to borrow it at my wife's job she had to bring it home for fear that someone would take it.Wish I could get a commission for all the people that said they were going to buy it. Sound restored wonderfully,brings back a lot of good memories from a simpler time.

Rock, Rhythm and Doo Wop, Vol. 1: The Greatest Songs From Early Rock 'n' Roll is yet another great box set from Rhino Records. The songs span the early years of rock music from the mid 50's to the early 60's. As the title suggests, all styles of music are represented by artists like The Drifters, Buddy Holly, The Shirelles, Del Shannon, The Platters, Ray Charles, Little Richard and many others. Well worth the price, this is a perfect collection for fans of this musical era.

I sat down at the computer to list Rock Rhythm & Doo Wop CD set on Amazon Marketplace to sell, but just on a whim stuck one of the CD's in the player to listen for a minute. Now I just cannot part with it. The music is so much fun, you cannot stand still during some of the songs, and it really brings back memories (for some of us!). If you enjoy music from this era, this is a great set to have.

I've been a huge follower of the Beach Boys for generations and acquired this CD to bring to mind my adolescent years when the sun was sizzling, the girls were beautiful and the cars were speedy. This meticulous CD brings back those recollections with Chuck Berry guitar licks wonderful harmonies and hi falsettos. The Beach Boys were America's group borrowing from every genre music row had to offer. Classic tunes like Fun Fun Fun, Help Me Rhonda and 409 are all James Dean style anthems and reflect what it is like to be young and without responsibility. If you are a teenager or if you just want to remember what is was like to be youthful and liberated. Buy this CD and stock other classic Beach Boy CD's such as Endless Summer, Spirit of American and Pet Sounds. Prior to the Beatles and what is now termed as the British Invasion, the Beach Boys ruled our airwaves.

This is an okay collection of Beach Boys car songs, but there's some that have been unfairly left out. All of the important ones are here though. However, if you're concerned with this CD's sound quality, you'd do better getting The Beach Boys' individual CDs. Capitol's Beach Boys "2-fers" are currently available as imports, fortunately. The 2-albums-on-1-CD (plus bonus tracks) format of these makes this very easy. Plus, they are all in STEREO up to 1966!

This CD is worthwhile if you just want a CD of Beach Boys car songs - that's what this is for. But The Beach Boys have a lot more great music out there. Don't miss the 2-fers!

I absolutely love this album! They have the greatest songs on here! I love the beach boys and They have wonderful songs on this album. My favorite song is Surfing USA.

Little Richard (aka Richard Penniman) has to be one of the best rock 'n' roll performers in history, influencing such artists as Buddy Holly, The Beatles, particularly Paul McCartney, and Jimi Hendrix. This nice, budget-priced CD contains some of his best songs. My personal favorites are "Long Tall Sally," "The Girl Can't Help It," "Rip It Up," and "Lucille." I highly reccomend this CD to anyone who likes rock 'n' roll or any of the artists mentioned above. I'm a fan of all of them and I like this CD.

Which is to say, he wasn't the first actor to sing his own movie or TV series theme song. Nor was Eastwood--the first was "Ballad Of Thunder Road", sung by Robert Mitchum on this collection in an adequate if not very memorable baritone--at least he didn't have to speak half of it the way Norris did with his "Walker" theme. Basically, the song tells the story of the movie--you don't very often find a theme song that goes that far. In a way, it's a violation of one of Hitchcock's rules as stated to the audience in the theatrical trailer of Psycho; "Don't give away the ending--it's the only one we have". But the song does offer sort an Appalachian change of pace from the predominance of California car songs here.

This is a wonderful collection of songs! From Jan and Dean to Commander Cody and the Beach Boys, etc., it covers the era of auto music well. They hint of a second volume in the insert but I've yet to see one. Come on Car and Driver, let's have it! A very useful CD to get you in the mood for Cruise Nights and car shows!

Brenda Lee's career began at the tender age of just 5 singing her heart out in church with the Master Worker's Quartet in Georgia. One of the biggest pop stars of the early '60s and while she made few recordings of note after the mid-60's, the best of her first decade is fine indeed, encompassing not just the pop ballads that were her biggest hits, but straight country and some surprisingly fierce rockability. Nearly 50 years later and over 100 million albums sold, Brenda's work is distinctively recognized all over the world.

This is a good budget collection if you want a sampling of Brenda Lee in certain genres. This series includes greatest Gospel, Rock and Country. But just be aware that these are the re-recordings of her hit songs she did back around 1996. She went back in the studio and recorded these with Owen Bradley so she could own some of her recordings. These recordings are very enjoyable but if you are looking for the original MCA/Decca recordings look elsewhere.
