Jazz Spectacular
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Though he shared the same urban musical background as other band singers of his generation (he was a mentor to Anita O'Day), Frankie Laine enjoyed a unique success in the 1950s with highly dramatic (and heavily orchestrated) "cowboy" songs, including film and TV themes like "High Noon" and "Rawhide." He may have been closer to his real roots and affinities on this 1956 venture into jazz, with a comfortable collection of more-conventional pop tunes and an all-star band led by the superb trumpeter and Count Basie veteran Buck Clayton. Whatever his enthusiasm for the project, though, Laine isn't a jazz singer in any usual sense of the term, rather a good pop singer with an ability to emphasize lyrics in a distinctive, almost conversational way that creates an immediate bond with his audience. That relaxed yet precise diction makes the opening "S'posin'" particularly successful, but elsewhere his vocals serve essentially as pleasant frames for some excellent solos by Clayton, tenor saxophonist Budd Johnson, and special guest trombonist J.J. Johnson. --Stuart Broomer

Who are you kidding?.......2005-12-10
What is it the young people say today? "Been there, done that." Well, this is my era. Saw the man. Heard the man. These are his songs, but this CD? Glenn Miller would be embarrassed! Be sure to listen to the samples....they lack the passion, the verve, the cohesiveness, and the very soul of Glenn Miller and his orchestra!!
An Awesome Buy.......2005-06-14
I first heard Glenn when I was 10. I was visiting a relative and they played some round tube that was like a record. When I went home my Dad showed me the cd he had of him.I am now 22 years old and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Glenn Miller. His music is great to listen to if you want a real pick me upper or if your cleaning house. This cd has made me the fan I am today.
"Boo...hiss!".......2004-05-04
What a bust! PLEASE: Do NOT buy this CD before listening to the previews--the songs on this CD cannot possibly be the original hits remastered, as the cover implies :(
If anyone knows of a quality set of re-mastered Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman originals, I would certainly enjoy to hear about it. Thank you!!
Big Band Spectacular.......2000-08-09
This album has all the classics that you would expect hear on the radio if you were to fall back into the 1940's. Upbeat and surprisingly familiar, it provides a wonderful background for a dinner party or just working around the house. A great buy!

Not Spectacular but Very Good.......2007-03-21
This collection was gathered to show off the capabilities of today's surround sound systems. In that express purpose it passes acceptably but not fantastically. Sound does indeed come out of the surround speakers but the demonstration is hardly wonderful. The music gathered for the demonstration on the other hand is exceptional. Numerous tracks from Erich Kunzel and the Cinncinati Pops Orchestra are scattered among the songs and should let anyone listening know that they should definitely be collecting numerous recordings from them. All of the other tunes are very well done and should serve as a demo disc for you to gain exposure to them. While this is a nice collection, I would honestly recommend that the buyer seek out the works of Kunzel and the CPO. These recordings alone will stretch your system and show you some quality music.

Awesome CD, Highly Recommended.......2006-01-29
I bought this, my first Brandon Fields CD, after listening to samples and because I'd heard a lot of people rave about Brandon Fields. I fell in love with it. He has such a unique, beautiful yet mysterious and soulful sound and all the songs (the ballads and more uptempo ones) were so accessible yet creatively interesting that I had to have more. After that, I went on to obtain almost all his solo albums and several others that he plays on and NONE have disappointed me.
If you like smooth jazz, but want to break out of the formulaic mold that most smooth jazz albums have today, this is a great place to start.

Welcome.......2005-03-02
This is basically a sampler of RCA Records "Living Stereo" albums, with a few comedy bits by Bob & Ray in between the music. The setup is that Bob & Ray are visiting the castle of Dr. Ahkbar, the mad scientist. While amusing, the Bob & Ray sketches are basically an excuse to show off stereo sound effects. The rest of the album features music from RCA's "Living Stereo" albums. Most of the music is actually quite good. It is "adult pop music" of the 1950s, both vocals and instrumentals. Vocals are performed by Lena Horne, Julie Andrews, Abbe Lane and the Belafonte Singers. The instrumentals are by George Melachrino, Skitch Henderson, Dick Schory, Guckenheimer Sour Kraut Band, Radio City Music Hall Organ and Sauter-Finegan Orchestra. An excellent sampler of the "Living Stereo" album releases. Plus, a great cover drawn by Jack Davis!
40 years of giggles.......2002-11-17
When I was about 8 and "stereo" was hot, my parents splurged on a big stereo set. I would lie in bed and listen when they entertained friends some weekends. That's the first time I heard this album. I thought "Dr. Ahkbar at the Castle" and "The Round Room" were absolutely the funniest things I had ever heard (I particularly liked the bagpipes in the Round Room). In my teens, 20s, 30s, and 40s, I dug out the old album, and it was STILL one of the funniest things I had ever heard. I would love to get hold of a CD.

Customer Reviews:
Get on the stick, Columbia/Sony! (Trombonists, let them hear from you.).......2007-02-19
Frankie Laine may not have been a Sinatra, Tony Bennett, or even Dick Haymes, but he was a likeable performer who not only introduced the haunting "We'll Be Together Again" but gave 100% every time out, whether classic American Songbook material or ephemeral period pieces like "Cry of the Wild Goose" and "I Believe." But there's no better way to honor his memory than to re-issue this album, shamefully out of print weeks after his passing.
Even if you're not a Laine fan, he fits in perfectly in the mix of this hi-spirited swing session. Buck Clayton has a distinctive voice on the trumpet practically matching that of Pops, but above all the recording is a gathering of Titanic trombonists, all of whom play their tails off. To begin with, there's the inimitable Dickie Wells, whose only equal among Basie trombonists may have been Al Grey. Then there's Kai Winding and the most influential of them all, J. J. Johnson, both given generous ensemble and solo space. But if that's not enough, add Duke Elllngton's #1 trombonist, Lawrence Brown. Normally, the most genteel and lyrical of trombone voices, Lawrence blows up a storm here. In fact, on the finale, a red-hot "Roses of Picardy," he follows both J.J. and Kai with a solo that scoops everyone, setting up Laine's joyous "out" chorus.
Whether you regard Frankie as the featured singer or just another player, as the star or the catalyst, this is a session that he has a right to be proud of--one, moreover, that deserves a place in most listeners' collections.
Clayton and company.......2006-09-07
Mr. Laine is obviously not a jazz singer, and yet I don't mind his less than expressive interpretations on this 100 percent jazz album.
I attribute this to Buck Clayton's influence - this band could make even Doris Day swing.
The list of musicians is quite impresive (Urbie Green; J. J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Sir Charles Thompson, Dickie Wells, Jo Jones...) but Clayton's solos and arrangements steal the entire show.
ONE OF THE TWO GREATEST JAZZ ALBUMS EVER RECORDED.......2003-05-03
The other one being THE STORY OF OLD MAN JAZZ & HIS LOVES (SCORE, 2002), and also featuring the singing of Frankie Laine.
Guess it's clear who my all-time favorite jazz singer is.
*****
JAZZ SPECTACULAR is precisely that: spectacular. Buck Clayton's trumpet is the perfect match for Frankie Laine's trumpet-like voice (often compared to a trumpet, Laine patterned his approach to jazz largely on his idol, Louis Armstrong's horn playing). The individual tracks glide so seamlessly in and out of vocals and instrumentals that the two aspects seem to have melded into one. This is jazz at its finest.
Laine And Clayton on a great JAZZ record.......2001-04-11
I do not mean to be disresptful of the opinions of others, but I must take exception to a statement a previous reviewer wrote: that Frankie Laine sounds like a country hick trying to sing jazz. Frankie Laine was very singular in his style yes, but a great jazz singer anyway. Laine started off his career making only jazz records. He even wrote a couple of jazz standards. Later he started to record some pop, and even later at the insistence of Mitch Miller he started recording the cowboy songs he is most famous for. Regardless, this records kicks. The arrangements are all top notch, the soloists shine, and Laine's singing is impressive. Don't miss out on this one Buck Clayton fans!
An unexpected pleasure........2000-06-13
I was new to this album, despite having a keen interest in Clayton's work of this period. What a delight! Frankie Laine's voice is an unusual one compared to most big band or jazz singers of the time - very full-on, very showbiz, not particularly interpretive of the lyrics, but very swinging and fluid - it grows. The music is absolutely top class, with a medium size band of top players (Jo Jones, Sir Charles Thompson, J.J. Johnson, Budd Johnson, Milt Hinton and more) headed by Buck Clayton, who wrote the sharp arrangements. How great it would've been to have heard this in a night club at the time!
