Geat Latin/Hip Hop Dance Mix.......2007-03-23
This is a fantastic compilation which is guaranteed to keep you in a groove from the opening notes right down to the last drumbeat. It is an energetic and eclectic mix of musical styles and genres, featuring a variety of artists--both new and well-known.
This is a terrific CD to wake you up in the morning and inspire you to have the best day possible or to party and dance the night away. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes urban beats.
Note To People On The Movie And Music.......2007-01-15
What the movie is about, which nobody has been inclined to mention at this point, is the true story about how ballroom and other dance programs first came into the public school system. I know hollywood, as usual, takes some artistic license, but the important part is the essence of the story. I am a person who is personally involved in theater and dance, both jazz and ballroom currently, and I think that you shouldn't dismiss this cd just because it doesnt have the ballroom tracks on it. Besides, for the $18-$20 normal price of cds, you can have this one and Take The Lead: Get Up And Dance, which does have the ballroom tracks, and that one does include the Hip Hop/Tango mix. If you really want to learn ballroom dance, you need to take classes though. Alot of fun and you actually have a use for the music then. Hope this helps some.
Great soundtrack!.......2007-01-10
If you enjoyed the movie, the soundtrack won't let you down... If you haven't seen it, this CD is still a great option combining HH with dance hall music. Great soundtrack!
Take The Lead - Is A Must See.......2007-01-04
I rented it and that night bought it on amazon. I also purchased the music. I have several nieces and nephews and made sure they saw it too. It's great for giving the young support on being labeled "different". Kind of a 2006 'To Sir With Love"
Boo.... hiss!.......2006-09-21
This is good hip-hop music, but that's ALL it is. The infectious tango track from the movie, (which was even used again for the title page on DVD), is conspicuously NOT there, nor any waltz, rumba or other ballroom music tracks that were in the movie. I THOUGHT THIS WAS A MOVIE ABOUT URBAN SCHOOL KIDS WHO LEARN BALLROOM DANCING! Sure, the hip-hop tracks should be there too because that was an integral part of the film, but that was only about half the music in the film. And in this case, the absence of ballroom dancing tracks, for a movie specifically about ballroom dancing is unforgivable. There should be a disclaimer on the cover of this CD to warn away anyone looking for the great, danceable tango, waltz, etc. tracks that were in the film.

Girl groups have enchanted humankind since the era of the ancient Greeks, when legend has it the Sirens attempted to lure wayfarers Odysseus and Jason to their fates; Persephone's chanteuses would eventually even lose a battle of the bands to the Muses. A couple millennia later, female singers would become a dominant force in the pop and rock of the `60s, the era anthologized on this four-disc, 120-track collection from Rhino. If the "group" tag is something of a misnomer (many of the acts here are solo artists), the vibrant female pop spirit of the times gets showcased in rare fashion by a collection that eschews the obvious to revel in showcasing rarities and surprises at every turn: the bittersweet, life-is-over-when "I'm 28" musings of a two-decades-pre-"Mickey" Toni Basil; a healthy sampling of gems by the Cookies and their various alter-egos, including the Palisades' fervent ode to uber-necking, "Make the Night Just a Little Bit Longer"; the Shangri-Las' mini-epic, "Out in the Streets"; hit songwriter Ellie Greenwich's solo turn on the haunting "You Don't Know." An impressive collection with an inclusive bent, its tracks range across the classic r&b of the Marvelettes, Chiffons and Irma Thomas, country-crossovers Skeeter Davis and Wanda Jackson, the blue-eyed soul of Jackie DeShannon and Dusty Springfield and wounded white-girl pop of Lesley Gore and Connie Francis. It's all contained in one of Rhino's most elaborately designed packages yet: each disc comes in a mock compact; its extensive liner notes and track info printed as a mini-diary; all housed in a smart replica of a vintage hat box--a treasure-packed delight for lovers of the genre and curious novices alike. -- Jerry McCulley
Album Description
It's the kiss that will be heard 'round the world: Rhino salutes the fabulous girl group genre with what is-amazingly and historically-the first boxed set ever to do so! This supersized collection luxuriates through almost five hours of the plethora of sounds, styles, and subjects that represent the beautiful, vibrant, and influential music women were making in the early to mid-60's. A footnote to the pop and rock of the day no longer, the raw emotion and spirited savvy of girl group greatness finally gets its due. Compilation producer Sheryl Farber notes, "Fans have always known how rich and varied this music is-how the sound encompasses soul, garage, Bacharach-style pop, countrypolitan, the British take on the American girl group sound, and more." Now the world will know and fall in love with girl group music too!

More important than the bible.......2007-03-09
First, the downside: no Phil Spector. But, plenty of Shadow Morton and "wall-of-soundalikes." Decent mix of ballads and uptempo numbers. If you like the Detroit Cobras, come find all the originals here! Oh, and the booklet (hell, more of a book than a "-let") has got info on every song and every artist, plus pictures galore. The folks at Rhino continue to add to their superlative reputation for box sets and reissues. Buy or die!!!
Young, female, and unknown.......2007-02-24
ONE KISS CAN LEAD TO ANOTHER * GIRL GROUP SOUNDS LOST & FOUND is truly one one the most unique box sets ever issued. It's also definitely not for everybody, not even all fans of late '50s - early '60s AM radio stuff.
DESIGN:
Remarkable-- simply outstanding. A miniature heavy board glossy hatbox, complete with a sturdy pull string that holds the box lid in place-- inside are four CDs surrounded by gray foam. They're stored on plastic holders that are covered by hard-paper books. Each of these packages has silver paper inside the front cover, and the overall look is of four differently styled powder compacts. Also included is a luxurious 204-page book that sets the standard for all-time. The jewel case sized book, made from heavy stock semi-gloss paper is replete with studio and other photos, advertisement and 45 label repros, and some of the most detailed text ever.
CONTENT:
This is where not all will be interested in this set. It's ideal for the obscurity collector, but not necessarily the TOP 40 fan-- there's only a sprinkling of commonly known tunes here. A lot of these tracks are unknown for a good reason-- some aren't even 'B' side quality. A good percentage of artists in this collection are as obscure as the songs they perform, and for the familiar groups or vocalists, many of their songs may not ring a bell either. This collection is called "LOST AND FOUND" for a good reason.

Superb Overview Of The Girll Group Era.......2007-02-19
With this superb collection of some hits, and many misses during the 'girl group' era that really stretched between 1960 to 1969. The sound pretty much peaked in 1965 while the British Invasion more or less took over the American Top 40 charts, replacing teen anguish and a woman's point of view of growing up in love to what men really wanted to say. That is actually a flip-flop of what men were saying before the 'girls' had their turn, when Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Fabian, and other male teen idols dominated the charts. So, in essence, it was the 'girls' turn after male teen idols were growing older, and the girls had to give some answers.
This set, which is highly imaginative in packaging, includes some rather rare tracks that one would at times would need to find the original 45 release to get in order to hear.
I won't dwell on the obvious tracks here, like by the Shangri-Las, Darnells, Chris Clark, etc., but a few are worth the price of the whole.
My favorite is the contribution by Dolly Parton, "Don't Drop Out". Her voice seems so appropriate, but as we know which direction she chose, this track is one of the best unheard of gems, which is sad, as it should have done something.
Another classic is the 'stereo' version of Alder Ray's "Cause I Love Him", which in sound is alot different than the mono 45 version I possess. Crystal clear in sound, it still packs a punch.
One last great track that this package includes is Reparata & The Delron's "I'm Nobody's Baby Now". This track literally jumps out and bites. Not a Phil Spector sound-alike in intention, but does have a Righteous Brothers "Lovin' Feelin'" to it. Again, another clear and clean production.
I will say that with any package, there will be a few tracks that seriously should have been omitted, like "Egyptian Shumba" by The Tammys, which could have been replaced by another rarity that is not included, like Suzy Walli's "Be My Man" a powerful David Gates production from 1965, but everyone has different tastes. I for one admit that despite the few clunkers, this package is an excellent example of a time when girl groups and girl singers were everywhere.
Consider the fact that about 200 singles were released a week, and only a handful were graced on the Pop Charts. There are bound to be many that are excellent songs, but without the proper advertising, radio play, and touring, the obvious would happen. A good single that bombs.
One of my favorite artists is included, April Young. A shame that this package only inlcuded one track, "To Be Loved By You". It is a good song, but her energetic and rather forceful "Gonna Make Him My Baby" still sounds fresh.
Maybe in time Rhino will release a companion to this set. Sure, there are literally thousands of girl group records that were released in the 60's, like Marcia Strassman's "Out Of The Picture". Who's she? She later played the wife of Mr Kotter in 'Welcome Back Kotter", or "He's My Dreamboy" by Maria Antoinette, and other great girls like Beverly Warren, Roberta Day, Candy & The Kisses, The Joys, The Gleams, Carol Connors, etc. Can go on and on, but this package is worth the price, even to the most infrequent listener of the 'girl group' genre.
There are 4 cd's, so my advice is to just take a lazy afternoon, and while listening to the tracks, read the diary that is supplied. It's a good read, and at times rather refreshing, especially the rare pictures and even the pictures of the rare labels that sometimes one has never seen before.
Like i said, this package is worth the price.
Outstanding!.......2007-01-16
I'm a fanatic for the sound of the girl groups of the early 1960s.
Before it goes out of print, you need to pick up this incredible Rhino box
set.
One little problem is that Rhino's definition of "girl group" was too broad; some songs are female solo recordings on which backup singers play little or no role. And in an apparent attempt to appeal to the British market, they put on some British songs by people such as Cilla Black. The English had no handle on the girl-group sound at all; it was strictly an American phenomenon.
But with four CDs and 30 songs on each CD, who can complain? Some songs, such as several Shangri-Las rip-offs, are hilarious. Then
there's one called "He Makes Me So Mad" by the Hollywood Jills on which the lead singer is reciting her complaints about her boyfriend, and after each gripe the rest of the group comes in with a sarcastic reply. Example: "He told the gang that I swim raw." The reply: "Well, don't you?" Classic!
There's a great Wall of Sound-type song called "Bobby's Come a Long Long Way," produced by Al Kooper. I can't make out any of the lyrics, but
supposedly the song is about Bob Dylan!
You won't regret buying this box.
SIMPLY BRILLIANT!.......2007-01-04
Who ever thought of this, is a GENIOUS! There's so much good stuff in here it's like an overdose of REAL GOOD music. So many great female groups in here, like the Supremes (of the 60's), Reparata & the Delrons, the Marvelettes, Goldie and the Gingerbreads, the Lovelites, the Blossoms (I love their harmonies), and on, and on, and on. GREAT stuff! you wont be dissapointed.

In These Metal Days.......2007-06-11
With this album, Brian Eno left behind pop songwriting to embark upon his "ambient music" period. B&AS makes a wonderful farewell to pop music and stands as his most complete pop album. Although the structure of the original album has been lost with the move to CD format, it is worth remembering that the first 5 songs appeared on side 1 of the album and the remainder on side 2. Viewed from this perspective, it is tempting to relate the title to the album structure: side 1 is wild and manic, while side 2 is calm and melodic. There are parallels in the number of songs and the number of instrumentals. Although Eno never considered hiself a musician, his underrated singing is put to great use on this album, and his songwriting skill is clearly in evidence. Others have given detailed descriptions of the songs, so I will restrict myself to the highlights: the typical lyrical silliness of "Backwater," hearing Kurt Schwitters's infamous "Ur Sonata" -- and more silly lyrics -- on "Kurt's Rejoinder" (presaging Eno's found music experiments of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts") and the placid beauty of "Spider and I."
Fans of Eno's ambient music will find much to like here and fans who come by way of Roxy Music and/or "Here Come the Warm Jets" will find a quieter, more thoughful and complex album in "Before and After Science." This is music that rewards repeated listening and which, nearly 30 years after its debut, still seems timely and interesting.
four and one half stars........2007-02-25
quirky funk (no one receiving), fingerpoppin' pop (backwater), early leanings toward ambient sounds (energy fools the magician and through hollow lands), and a generous helping of gorgeous slow-tempo numbers have this album from 1977 jumping all over the place, which is fine with me. this is creative music that is easily accessible, completely listenable. "another green world" seems to be the eno album from his song-based (pre-ambient) period that most people latch onto as his masterpiece, but i would argue that "before and after science" gives that outstanding lp a run for its money. great art-rock. highly recommended.
A diamond in the rough of transition.......2006-06-03
Most reviewers have pointed out the presence of upbeat songs, ethereal lyrical explorations, and all out ambience on this album, and it's definitely full of gorgeous examples of all three. Although this is often classified as a transitional album because it houses so many varieties of songs, I think they work stunningly well together; While his first two solo albums are truly wonderful, the constant up-tempo pace was a bit relentless. "Another Green World" introduced the ambience to stunning effect, but I think the amalgamation of each style is fully realized on this album. The styles of song are interspersed just enough to balance the album out, and really "take you places". Plus, the songs in each style on this album can certainly rival the best of Eno's previous three albums: "Backwater" and "kurt's Rejoinder" match any highlight off "Warm Jets" or "Tiger Mountain", while "Here he Comes" and "Spider and I" easily match "Another Green World" in pure ethereal aesthetic. Moreover, everything on this album is quite catchy, and almost certainly mood-inducing. Just get it already!
Man in transition........2005-06-14
Brian Eno's "Before and After Science", his last song-based album until the about-to-be-released (June, 2005) "Another Day on Earth" is in many ways the album you would hope it would be, reflective of his past, pointing in some ways to the future, very much texture-oriented music. On the other hand, while it has its moments, it fails to capture the immediacy of "Here Come the Warm Jets" or the beauty of "Discreet Music", but its still a great listen.
The album is really two sides, the first being more energetic, the second being a bit more ambient in feel. On the first side, there are three things that immediately draw you in-- the first is an overt use of vocal harmonies-- Eno's vocals are almost always in a harmony form with two or three voices singing the line ("No One Receiving", melodic pop song "Here He Comes"). The second is bassist Percy Jones, whose playing on a few of the tracks, in particular "Kurt's Rejoinder", is nothing short of astonishing. The third is the use of space-- look no further than standout "Energy Fools the Magician", where the four piece (Eno, Jones, drummer Phil Collins back when he was a drummer and guitarist Fred Frith) manipulate space as a fifth instrument to amazing effect.
The second side is much more in line with the ambient work of Eno's most recent albums-- a overwhelming feel of haunted ambient with vocals dominates. The entire side is full of fantastic material, from the haunted "Julie With..." to the lyrically brilliant and dark "Spider and I".
Overall, its a rewarding album that finds an artist caught in between forms, but even in transition, his brilliance shines through. Recommended.
Another Eno World.......2005-03-24
The last in Eno's series of quirky, unique albums from the 70's before he moved totally into ambient music and expored his "rock" side only through production of other artists.
Like the titles that came before, Before and After Science finds Eno stringing together a series of offbeat numbers ranging from rock to pop to ambient and everything in between. This record was sequenced with most of the more ambient numbers at the end, unlike Another Green World's free admixture of styles. I personally liked the AGW way better, but fortunately we have the option these days of programming the songs in any order we want, so problem solved.
Eno's star-studded array of collaborators had become as legendary as his skewed sense of pop by this point, with everyone from Phil Manzanera to Phil Collins to Robert Fripp sitting in on this one. They were Eno veterans, but Eno's concurrent interest in German art-rock brings Can's Jaki Liebzeit and Moebius and Roedelius from Cluster to the table on Before and After Science.
My favourite moments: The atmospheric but too-short "Energy Fools the Magician" with the Brand X rhythm section of Percy Jones and Collins, with Fred Frith. The frantic new wave single "King's Lead Hat" (an anagram of Talking Heads) with Fripp. And all of the old "side 2" especially the beautiful "By This River" with Cluster. The piano has haunted me since I first heard it way-back-when, and I enjoy playing it myself. The closing "Spider and I" summons up a massive wall of synths-n-bass, and Eno's resigned vocal is quite fitting as he was about to leave the rock world (as a performer) for a very, very long time.
I have the earlier CD edition and to tell you the truth I don't notice anything radically different about the remaster, so the cheaper original CD might be a good bargain unless you're a real audiophile.

Pretty close........2005-09-09
This single-disc compilation makes a pretty good introduction to the legendary folk/ blues musician, Lead Belly. The sound quality is good and comparable to the more recent collection Absolutely the Best, and this CD contains many of the same standards as that album, including "The Bourgeois Blues," "In New Orleans," "Goodnight Irene" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," as well as additional classics such as "Yellow Gal," "Blue Tail Fly" and "The Boll Weevil Song." The only thing stopping this collection from being indisputably more definitive than Absolutely the Best is the unfortunate absence of "Midnight Special," a song famously covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival in the late 1960s, and probably one of Huddie's four or five most popular songs. My suggestion? If you're willing to shell out a bit more, then get this album along with Lead Belly Sings for Children, also available on Amazon. The latter contains the aformentioned "Midnight Special," as well as a number of wonderful children's songs, spirituals and medleys.
Almost.......2004-11-06
You can't go wrong with this compilation. For a longer review, see the other reviewer's remarks. Remember no "best of" is best without "Midnight Special", recorded by a kajillion other artists. (Is there a Leadbelly estate?) Be prepared though for the sellers of any compilation including that song to stick a gun in your ribs for the CD(s). If you can afford more money, skip this one for the one with ...you get up in the mornin', you hear the ding dong ring...
One of the very best single-disc Leadbelly compilations.......2004-08-16
This Cleopatra disc is a great place to start for those just getting acquainted with Huddie Ledbetter. It's not definitive, of course, but these fine transfers of Leadbelly's best-known songs will satisfy most casual fans, and while "Take This Hammer" (a part of the "When The Sun Goes Down"-series) is probably a little more accessible for the casual listener, you can't beat this disc as far as the song selection goes.
More serious fans will of course want "The Definitive Leadbelly" from the Catfish label, or the multi-volume "Leadbelly Legacy" series from Smithsonian/Folkways, but this is a terrific starting point for the curious. Huddie Ledbetter, who usually performed solo accompanied only by his own twelve-string guitar, was the first black musician to gain recognition amongst the white audiences of the 20s and 30s, and this is essential early American blues and folk music.
Must have original blues.......2000-06-15
Lead Belly was the basis of todays modern blues. If you have ever heard the gospel blues of the early 20 th century you must have this album. Blind Willie Johnson, Son House, and Lead Belly these were the original deep rooted spitually agangst singers.

I'll Lead You Home Michael W. Smith.......2007-05-20
Hello. This Cd is good. I like his musical landscape. The songs are great and encouraging.
This is awesome..........2007-05-01
I own many of Michael W. Smith's albums and am familiar with almost all of them. I would have to put this on the short list of my best albums.
There are many tracks that I absolutely love. "Cry for Love" is a solid start and "As It Is in Heaven," "Someday," and the title track are outstanding. But the high point of the album is the Trilogy, Tracks 8-10. I think that all three of those songs are musically beautiful and lyrically powerful. Quite honestly, the Trilogy is worth the price of the album. And it concludes with several other good songs, like "Calling Heaven" and "I"m Waiting for You."
I would never accuse Smith of having a glorious voice. However, I consider him to be the most brilliant songwriter of modern Christian music and a wonderful musician. This album is a true testament to his remarkable gifts. I listen to it often and recommend it to anyone.
Beautiful, stirring, & simply fantastic.......2006-06-07
I've been raised on Michael W. Smith since I was a baby and this is by far one of his best and one of my big favorites.
"I'll Lead You Home" (track 7) is beautifully written to where the melody and music to it just matches the words perfectly. Good songs should remind you of poetry, where the music and the words rhyme together. This song pulls that off really smoothly.
The next three tracks are beautifully braided together. "Other Side of Me" is one of the most sweet and romantic songs I've ever heard.
"Breathe in Me" is very deep and desperate in how it calls for God's help, but at the same time, humble and quiet. This is a great song for quiet time or prayer time, or when you just want to think.
"Angels Unaware" reflects the same mood of the previous two, (remember, it is a trilogy) but it calls us to consider what we watch ourselves and think about what only God knows. But even though the trilogy's song's subjects change, the mood stays the same but fits each one in it's own way.
"Crown Him with many Crowns" is for those of you who like big black church choirs. It's interesting, too, because you've got one little white boy (Michael) in a sea of African-American choir people, and it's still great.
Altogether, it is definetely worth the buy and it's simply fantastic. Any MWS fan needs this album.
I wait for Kingdom come..........2006-05-03
Somewhere around Hickory, NC on August 10, 1998, i was going on my first trip with out Church's youth group and this album got played. Never heard ANYTHING from Contemporary Christian Genre, but I loved this. "Cry For Love" starts off the album with the energy of a big race starting (actually the lyrics mention a race car going for the wall at the speed of sound) and
Then there's "Breakdown", the most striking indictment of our Countries' Moral State I've heard (Our Founding Fathers left a noble legacy, LOOK at what we've done...If We say that we are FREE, who will believe us?)
From there, the album slows a bit, 'til you get to "Someday" that is almost certainly my favorite song from this Genre. Michael throws out every problem from that era (and yes the references to "The Kennedy Conspiracy, The Trial of O.J." seem a bit dated now) then says (in my own words) "It's a crazy life, but someday Jesus comes back and sets everything right!" But honestly this songs' best trait is the energy of it's two verses (I set a speed record on my bike listening to thsi once)
In contrast the next song "I'll be around" is cool, but slower. I'm not sure if he's singing from Jesus' perspective (ala "I Know All About Scars" from Stories (which I have no problem with) or jsut as another friend....but VERY uplifting for wanyone whose stumbled on this straight and narrow way. well those are my Fav.s from this album, Very Good Effort from Michael though I think his best work was on "Freedom" (probably jsut my taste in music thoguh)
Brilliant, but Still the Poorest MWS Album.......2005-11-17
This is a beautiful thoughtful album that every Christian should be able to apprieciate. It is artisically great, musically blissfull, and lyricaly bold and evangilistic.
That said, this is surely Michael's weakest offering. I have about seven, and this is my least favorite.

Customer Reviews:
The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.
A living legend.......2005-03-10
Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "
not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23
Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.
Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31
IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**
Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12
This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

REAL MUSIC.......2007-01-16
THIS IS MUSIC YOU CAN LISTEN TO EVERY DAY AND ENJOY OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
White bread, well-baked in spots.......2005-08-12
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir that performs on this disc is a tightly-knit, well-conducted unit, and some of the tracks on the disc border on the ethereal. "Lead, Kindly Light," "Sweet Hour of Prayer" (in parts) and "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," for example, touch the soul and bring tears to the eyes.
However, on other arrangements the choir sounds like a group of white folks far removed from the remainder of humanity. For example, the opening track, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," and also "All Creatures of Our God and King" sound rote and perfunctory, like a group of elementary school students (with very fine voices, to be sure) going through the paces of a daily sing: elevator music on a grand scale. At the opposite extreme, sudden dynamic shifts in other tracks sound pretentious. The final bars of "All Creatures of Our God and King" suggest an attempt at a grand finale, but lack even a hint of majesty or passion. The choir lacks any apparent understanding of the Shaker spirit in "Simple Gifts" --- rather like Lawrence Welk playing Bob Marley. (Not that I've ever seen a Shaker in dreadlocks.) "Battle Hymn of the Republic" begins majestically, but turns into a caricature, and then reverts to a semblance of glory (except for a brief flirtation with a minor key).
The high praise lavished on this disc by other reviewers is no surprise: It is of very high quality for what it is. The choir offers a lovely sound. However, more than half the tracks are seriously flawed, and the musicianship is sufficiently peculiar on the whole as to lower the rating considerably.
This is the one!.......2002-08-24
If you want to hear the best of the best, this CD is it. These hymn arrangements are just beautiful and very touching. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the choir and wants to feel a little closer to heaven. The choir seems to sing literally with one voice and you feel like they are singing just for you. Congratulations to the new conductor, Craig Jessop and all those who contributed to the quality that went into producing this CD.
A Must for the Sabbath.......2002-04-17
I LOVE IT!!! What better way to enjoy the Sabbath than to sing of the Lord's Praises with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? This album is just the ticket! It's very powerful, and uplifting.
What? You mean I can only give this album five stars? But that doesn't even BEGIN to do it justice!
I love it. Truly a masterpiece!
A Must for Sabbath.......2002-02-05
If you only own one Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD, this is the one. It has creative arrangements of many favorite hymns, as well as the best recording of the Wilhousky Battle Hymn arrgmt that I have ever come across. The only downer: it has (another) recording of Simple Gifts, which has been beat to death by choirs in the last decade.
I especially love the 'Glory' pieces on it: Full of timpani, brass, and alleluias- one of those discs you turn all the way up and direct the stereo when noone is looking. I hope my neighbors like it too; they probably hear it quite a bit.

Customer Reviews:
BW Stevenson - wonderful!.......2007-06-08
BW's blend of bluesy-country-folk music is outstanding. Anyone who has only heard "My Maria" is missing out on the true depth of what this singer/songwriter had to offer. He paints a picture with his words and the soulful sound of his voice in every song. When you listen to this huge collection of his work, you'll feel like you're right in step with BW on his journey down that "two-track road".
The orginal BW debut album was a masterpiece.......2007-04-26
The orginal BW Stevenson album was a masterpiece and at least 20 years ahead of its time. RCA didn't know how to market the album because the only thing close to it in those days was James Taylor's Sweet Baby James on Warner Brothers records. For the most part the ground work hadn't been set for country/rock/folk/pop music.
BW Stevenson along with Taylor, Willie Nelson, The Eagles, Loggins and Messina, and a handful of country and rock/pop artist were creating what would later become that sound that we know today.
This CD is a great buy because it not only features the orginal debut album but it also includes his second album, "Lead Free."
Both of these recording are very strong with well crafted songs and BW had a voice that came right out of heaven.
If you haven't already purchased this CD I suggest you hurry and do so because you never know how long it's going to be around...it took 20 years just to get these songs on CD so what are you waiting for?
backwards is not right.......2006-08-04
i wish i could just have the first bw cd by itself in the correct order.though i'm happy to have his songs on cd, the song sequence here is terrible.
better than the "very best of B.W." cd.......2006-07-14
I MET B.W. IN SAN MARCOS, TEXAS AT A CONCERT I HELPED PUT TOGETHER AT SOUTHWEST TEXAS STATE IN THE 70'S. I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR ANY SOURCE FOR B.W.'S "TEXAS MORNING" AND "ON MY OWN" FOR 20 YEARS. COULDN'T FIND AN MP3, AN OLD ALBUM, NOTHING! NOW I FINALLY HAVE THEM BACK IN MY COLLECTION. REST IN PEACE, BUCKWHEAT! YOUR MUSIC LIVES ON...
Childhood fan.......2006-05-11
I grew up listening to Buckwheat; my parents would play this record on long Texan nights and then later during long Montana winters. As I don't have a record player, I haven't been able to hear this album in 10 years, and now it's finally out on CD! This has to be one of the best albums of all-time. It's not really country, it's not really folk; it's more like just one man singing his thoughts in a haunting, beautifully spare way. I will treasure this forever.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Collection.......2007-03-05
I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.
PERFECT!.......2006-10-26
There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.
Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19
This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!
More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02
Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.
