Julie London was like the female Sinatra. She was one cool, swingin' lady. Her original concept albums are brilliant and much more interesting to collect than the many compilation CDs available of her songs. It is much better to hear the songs in the original context, and mood concept, than jumbled together with songs from other albums. "Sophisticated Lady" (1962) and "For the Night People" are rare albums and sound better than ever remastered on CD.

"Sophisticated Lady" is, just as the title implies, an album of very lush, sophisticated jazz standards that Julie sings with a full orchestra. The arrangements are not the most original, but suit the material and Julie's voice well enough. There are some great songs in this set, such as "Bewitched" and "If I Should Lose You" (one of the better renditions of the song).

The reason to buy this CD, however, is for Julie's 1966 classic, "For the Night People." It is one of her best concept albums, full of moody, sultry torch songs. Julie's renditions of "Am I Blue?" and "God Bless the Child" are unique and memorable. It is said in the original liner notes that Julie hand-picked all the songs on this particular album, and it shows. This is the Julie sound at its best.

Overall, you get two Julie albums on one CD: the good "Sophisticated Lady" and the great "For the Night People." You can't go wrong buying this CD.

Classy albums from a classy singer.......2005-04-27

Julie recorded many high quality albums in the fifties and sixties. This set features all the tracks from her 1962 album, Sophisticated lady, and her 1966 album, For the night people. . Julie knew what she was good at and recorded songs that suited her. The two albums here were typical of Julie's sixties music.
This collection is filled with wonderful songs from the Great American Songbook. Two of them (Sophisticated lady, I got it bad and that ain't good) are by Duke Ellington. Bewitched is a Rodgers and Hart song that has been recorded by many fine singers. I think of it as a Doris Day song, but Julie's version is lovely. Frank Sinatra had a huge 1945 hit with Saturday night is the loneliest night of the week. He had another huge 1945 hit with Dream, but the Pied Pipers topped the charts with their version. Tommy Dorsey topped the charts in 1940 with I'll never smile again. Ethel Waters topped the charts in 1929 with Am I blue.

There are many obscure songs here too, including some by famous composers. Among them are Make it another old-fashioned please (Cole Porter), If I should lose you, Here's that rainy day and When the sun comes out.

If you enjoy Julie's music, this will provide with different songs in a similar style to her other albums.

Sultry session from London soars.......2000-02-25

This two albums on one CD set finds Julie London at her sultriest and steamiest. Sophisticated Lady, 1962, contains wonderful versions of Remind Me and Make it Another Old Fashioned Please as well as London's hubby-penned (Bobby Troup) Where Am I to Go. For The Night People, 1966, scores with Am I Blue, Mercer's Dream and Here's That Rainy Day. It's wonderful to have these recordings available.

These 2 very lush Julie London LP's are combined on one CD. Londin sticks mostly to jazz standards, and sounds very appealing on both sessions. Highly recommended.
