Amazon.com's Best of 2001
A massive set--67 string quartets on 21 discs in a budget-priced, shelf-friendly, compact box. So the obvious question is: do you need it? The equally obvious answer is a resounding "yes" if you love these endlessly inventive quartets and if you appreciate superbly played performances that capture both the letter and the spirit of Haydn's genius. The Angeles String Quartet isn't as well known as some ensembles that have recorded complete Haydn sets, but they are superior to all, with the arguable exception of the Tatrai Quartet. They demonstrate technical polish and rich, warm sound that's never cloying. And they give these works the forward-moving impetus they need within a classical framework, eschewing both anachronistic Romanticism and the mechanical astringency of period specialists.
The Angeles Quartet is unique in its mastery of early as well as late works, in tune with Haydn's stylistic development and sensitive to the attractions of each of these remarkable pieces. So they infuse the visionary slow movements of the late quartets with the appropriate depth and at the same time revel in the muscularity of the Opus 76 No.2's catchy Menuetto, the humor of the "Joke" Quartet, Opus 33 No.2, and the power of the Allegro con spirito of Opus 76 No.1. Most impressive is their way with the early quartets--no small matter when you consider that the contents of the first six discs precede the Opus 20 set generally considered as signaling the maturity of the form. The Angeles make even the earliest quartets, five-movement divertimentos for four strings, a habit-forming delight. Their playing here is full of exuberance, wittily playful and rough, peasantlike by turns. The sonics are outstanding, too, well-balanced, warm, and lifelike. An indispensable recording. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
A superb Haydn benchmark.......2007-06-28
It takes a lot of time to grasp Haydn's music, because there's much of everything: symphonies, piano sonatas, operas, piano trios, string quartets, choral works, songs, etc. - in sum, more than one thousand individual works. It will probably take more than a year listening to it all, and comprehend it as well (i.e., not as "background music"). Few, if any person, can have a complete grasp of everything he wrote.
But there are nonetheless good reasons trying to grasp Haydn's music, at least partly. This bargain set - 68 string quartets on 21 CDs - is a perfectly good reason. Haydn's string quartets contain some of his finest music. And the present recordings with Angeles Quartet are simply superb. Unlike many period instrument performers, Angeles Quartet avoids meticulous mannerism and plays this music with energy and passion, without loosing structural control. Furthermore, the recordings are excellent, with a rich, creamy and spacious sound. In short, great performances and excellent engineering. A benchmark recording, no less.
There are some rival complete sets: Aeolian Quartet (Decca), Festetics Quartet (period instrument performances, Arcana), Tátrai (Hungaroton), and Kodaly Quartet (Naxos). In terms of sound, the present set is clearly preferable. In terms of performances, the only serious rival is Tátrai Quartet's classic collection from the sixties. But Angeles Quartet is not a second choice. If you hesitate, you need both. Budget and shelf space minded collectors need not hesitate.
Perfect Dinner Music.......2007-05-14
Some might be offended at the idea that music be played in the background to accompany a fine meal, but in fact most of us listen to music in the background. This entire set of 15-CDs is (to my ears) the perfect music to accompany a delicious meal with someone you love. I have owned this CD set for years and never tire of it.
I have found that after listening to it hundreds of times that using iTunes in shuffle mode keeps it fresh.
Delightful Background Music.......2006-03-04
This music is a great buy, and wonderful to listen to while doing desk work or reading.
The Angeles String Quartet does an excellent job, and all of the works are so tuneful that I frequently found myself walking around the house humming the tunes after hearing a quartet for the first time.
He truly is the father of string quartets!.......2005-09-27
This may not be true as far as the instrumentation is concerned, but Haydn is one of the first to explore them as more than a solo violin with a trio accompaniment (second violin, viola and cello), thus giving the chamber music a new dimension.
If you've already explored Haydn's universe through some of his glorious symphonies, these string quartets are an excellent way of further expanding your appreciation of Haydn's music. There are very few dull moments in this lot (and almost all of them are to be found in his early quartets, while there are a few in his very latest works, where he seems to have lost the energy and brio that had established him as one of the best composers of his time). His first works have five movements and ressemble the divertimenti or serenatas. Later on, his quartets took a form which was to become standard, both for Haydn and other composers: four movements - a fast one, a slow one, a minuet and trio and a fast finale.
If one listens to Haydn's string quartes in chronological order, one can feel and appreciate his growth and maturity as a composer. The motives introduced during the first movement are developed over the entire work entity, the increasing use of first movements that are monothematic, the expansion of harmonic usage, the combination of serious with funny, intellectual with ridicule, etc.
Both Mozart and Beethoven wrote famous series of string quartets, but I've always liked Haydn's quartets the most. My personal favorites are op. 76 (especially no 3, which later on became the German National Anthem), op. 64 (especially no 5 called "The lark") and op. 33 (where Haydn introduced special effects, like a birdcall, which gave the third quartet its name).
A matter of taste?.......2005-05-31
It is something unpleasant about the sound here; it is resonant, yes, but not like the Takacs quartet. Comparing to the Takacs' take on op.76/1, 2 & 3, which I love, the Angeles' makes me think of a grey substance, sterile, antiseptic, of no life. Is it the sound quality? Or is it the way the quartet is playing? I think the latter, but it is difficult to figure out what is wrong; in fact I don't find any serious miscalculations. The problem is that the playing feels calculated; it is some kind of contrived perfection, it all feels too concious; I feel something wrong about the accent, the stress of the phrasings... but I give up: Suffice it to say that I regret I bought this collection of boring performances. Three stars for professional playing. If you like some human touch, go for the Aeolian quartet, less perfection, more life.

Saw the movie ("The Jerome Kern Story") and had to have the CD.......2007-06-26
I just saw the movie on TCM called "The Jerome Kern Story", and I wanted to have the CD of Jerome's best hists for my CD Library.
This CD has probably every one of Jerome's hits from the early beginning of his career to the end.
The re-recordings of Jerome's earlier titles are very old, and therefore they may sound like MONO recordings (which they are!). But I don`t think there is any way around that, since Jerome Kerns began writing songs in the late 1800's,way before STEREO SOUNDS even came about!
To me, the fun part about owning recordings from the past is to listen to the songs just as they may have been heard 80+ years ago, for example. This fact does not take away from the listening pleasure, but infact, it takes the listener back to the early days of music & enhances the experience.
Jerome Kerns was one of the most prolific song writers of his time...A true genius. This is a must have CD if a person is interested in the history of music.
He just keeps rollin along .......2006-06-05
Jerome Kern is the first of the great group of American popular song composers which would include Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Rogers- Hart- Hammerstein, Cole Porter, ,,, The great show music , the great songs have become part and parcel of the American popular repertoire. One of those songs is arguably the greatest of all American popular songs, ' Ole Man River'. This recording has versions of the songs Kern himself would probably approve of, as he did not particularly like jazzed-up versions of his work.
The songs and performers are:

2. They Didn't Believe Me - Dinah Shore, Morris Stoloff & His Orchestra
3. Look for the Silver Lining - Connee Boswell, Victor Young & His Orchestra

For $9.00 This Is a Steal!.......2007-05-31
These quartets, along with op.76, were obviously a massive influence on Beethoven's op.18 set. In my opinion. they completely overwhelm Beethoven's early output as a whole and pushed Ludwig Van to achieve greatness in his middle period.
It's apparent that the reason that Beethoven couldn't learn much from his lessons with Pappa Haydn was because the latter was really busy composing some of his greatest masterpieces like these quartets and the "Creation".
The performance here is excellent, perhaps a bit trebly and refined. But most music lovers want that from the recordings of Mozart and Haydn, which is just fine. And the compositions themselves are jaw-dropping...full of fascinating complexity, pre-Romantic era tidbits (check out the remote key changes throughout), and mature wit and style.
Unsatisfactory value.......2006-05-26
The playing is certainly good, but with only 51 minutes of music, and with Naxos's new non-bargain price, this is not your best choice. Other quartet ensembles, notably the outstanding Mosaiques Quartet, includes Op. 103, Haydn's last incomplete quartet, along with the Op. 77 works. This is a logical coupling and one that you should consider.
Exploring the Haydn Quartets -- Opus 77 No. 1 & 2.......2005-02-03
Haydn composed his opus 77 string quartets (there are only two) in 1799 and dedicated them to Prince Lobkowitz, who would also become a major patron of Beethoven. They are Haydn's last completed works in this form. Together with opus 76, the opus 77 works constitute the summit of Haydn's achievement in the string quartet. These two works are closely and intricately written with detailed part writing, counterpoint, and creative use of the sonata form. They manage to be both spacious and spare in structure. Yet for all their seriousness and craft, the opus 77 quartets are a delight to hear. Haydn had the extraordinary ability to be both accessible and deep. The quartets work at the level of the musical involvement of the listener. Put another way, Haydn had the ability to convey both cheerfulness and high seriousness in his music. This ability is at its height in these two quartets. Haydn scholar Karl Geringer observed in his study of the composer that these quartets were written "when true expression seemed more important to Haydn than a perfect balance between form and content." (Haydn: A Creative Life in Music at 323)
There are not many individual recordings of the opus 77 quartets. Thus it is doubly fortunate that they are available in an outstanding reading by the Kodaly Quartet as part of its cycle of the Haydn quartets and that the CD sells for a budget price on the Naxos label.
The first quartet in G major opens with an allegro moderato featuring a lilting first theme in the violin over a brushing accompaniment. The violin and the cello soon join in a dialogue over the theme. The exposition is expansive and lengthy but detailed at the same time. After a broad development section which moves widely among different keys, the exposition returns in a much-shortened recapitulation. The second movement is an adagio in a remote key from the opening movement. It features a singing theme given to the cello, and the meditative character of the movement is punctuated by several long pauses. The movement is serene, and it glows. The third movement is a minuet, which in both this quartet and the second quartet, is brusque and rapid almost in the manner of a Beethoven scherzo. This minuet features a gypsy-like theme. The finale is a rapid, lively presto with a great deal of counterpoint and interplay among the voices. The movement is througout based on the theme announced at its opening.
The second quartet of opus 77 is in F major and strikes me as more serene than its companion. The first movement, allegro moderato, begins with a single chord which is followed by a lyrical theme, and a slower-paced secondary theme. The movement develops tension during the development which ends in a minor key before returning to the opening material. The second movement of this quartet is the minuet which, again, is quick, rough and brusque. The contrasting trio is smoother in character and is placed in the lower part of the register of the instruments. The third movement, andante, is taken at a walking pace with a theme that grows in intensity as it proceeds. After a dramatic stop, the them is repeated in the cello accompanied by a lovely filigree in the violins. The finale, vivace assai, opens with a loud unison chord followed by a quirky, gay theme that is used throught the movement and subjected to contrapuntal treatment. It reaches a large climax, pauses, and rushes on to a light, joyful close.
Haydn was a masterful composer of string quartets and these, his final efforts, are among his greatest. They constitute pure music at its best and are full of the sheer joy and craft of music-making. Those listeners who would like to enhance their enjoyment of this music by reading a short but perceptive recent appreciation of Haydn may find rewarding Terry Teachout's article, "Haydn!" in the January, 2005 issue of "Commentary".

Divine Papa.......2006-06-11
This is a truly beautiful disk. Both the performance and the recording are exceptional. In the hands of these musicians, the beauty of Haydn's music really shines through. His lyricism, elegance, and grace are all in evidence here.
Unfortunately this ensemble has not (as of this writing) recorded any other sets of Haydn's string quartets so if you are someone who prefers to buy the complete quartets by one ensemble, then the sets by Quatuor Mosaiques are highly regarded. If you are someone who already owns a box set of Haydn's complete string quartets, you might still want to give this disk a listen. If you are someone who has never really explored Haydn's music or chamber music in general, this disk might just get you hooked.
Revelatory perfornces of great music.......2006-02-16
Until I heard this disc I was perfectly happy with the Kodaly recording of the two opus 77 quartets, but the playing on this recording is revelatory. The phrasing, the management of dynamics, the beautiful sounds of the instruments and, above all, the way the four musicians listen to each each are absolutely 5 star. This has become my favorite Haydn quartet recording and my favorite L'Archibudelli recording. Quartet lovers should write to SONY and ask for more L'Archibudelli recordings of Haydn quartets and of Mozart's quartets #14-#19 dedicated to Haydn.
Revelatory.......2005-12-05
Listening to this recording profoundly deepened my appreciation and understanding of Haydn's accomplishment. Haydn developed the string quartet form and in these late works we hear it brought to perfection. Here is the foundation for Beethoven's great quartets. L'Achibudelli's "period" approach makes the structure of these pieces apparent, while still retaining the warmth and pathos of the music. The playing is extrordinary, the color and tempos are just right, and the recording quality is superb. If you have any interest in string quartets or Haydn (or both) this CD is essential.
Essential listening........2003-09-14
IMHO this is historic: the finest record of any string quartets by anybody ever made. Stretch? Listen to how the phrases dovetail tonally from part to part, how the figures flow so easily on gut strings, the glorious viola sound, utterly unlike the dull modern sound, the relaxed energy and effortless blend of identities of it all. This is truly a best guess as to what pre-industrial classical quartets really sounded like. Check out Immerseel's Anima Eterna group doing Schubert for the closest orchestral comparison.
Haydn, the Modernist.......2001-11-17
Well, this may be going a little far, but of course many of Haydn's late compositions point their way forward. The choral writing in his late oratorios and masses showed Beethoven the way in his two masses, especially the Missa Solemnis. And then Haydn's symphonies used novel devices that propelled all of High Classical symphonic writing: the use of motives, rather than whole melodies, that gave symphonic fast movements great concision and motoric thrust.
In the world of the string quartet, too, Haydn, not Mozart, is the model for Bethoven and Schubert--even Schumann. The first of the Op. 77 quartets tells you why. Though called a minuet still, the third movement is a genuine scherzo of Beethovenian stripe, and the last movement, with its perpetuum mobile codetta, sounds very much like the more Dionysiac passages in Beethoven's quartets. (The wonderful last movement of the of Op. 59, No. 3, comes to mind immediately.)
Here is a chance to examine this side of Haydn in two quartets that show him still at the height of his powers. Even the Op. 103, which Haydn couldn't complete because of failing health, has a strangely menacing-sounding minuet that takes us into a darker part of the soul than the Classical era almost ever explored.
These performances are very fine indeed, though note that they employ period instruments. If the Kodaly or Lindsay Quartet is your paradigm in Haydn, you may be disappointed by the lack of vibrato and the steelier tone that gut strings impart. That said, these are models of period performance practice, with a fleetness in the faster movements and a sober, dry-eyed approach to the more inward music that sounds just right for this late 18th-century music. The inclusion of the transcription of Haydn's song about growing old adds an especially apt note to the proceedings, given that Op. 103 was Haydn's farewell to music.

Lovely.......2004-12-16
This is an excellent set of the late Haydn quartets. Modestly priced like many reissues of older recordings, this is an audio to digital transfer of recordings made quite a few years ago. The sound quality is not quite as sharp as modern digital recordings but this is more than compensated for by the uniformly excellent level of musicianship exhibited by the Amadeus quartet. This set features some of Haydn's best chamber music, including the famous Emperor quartet with its moving second movement. The playing of the Amadeus Quartet is lyrical and precise, never overplaying the more emotional movements.

Breathtaking.......2001-10-05
An extraordinary performance of late Haydn quartets, this recording belongs with the Quartetto Italiano (or Vegh) late Beethoven and the Griller Mozart Quintets as an illumination of the consummate work of a great musician. The disc fully deserves the praise it won from "The Penguin Guide" and "Gramophone." You will listen to it as often as to several others combined.

Broadway style performances in terrific sound!.......2006-07-11
These performances by British singers are all ones that Kern himself would have liked. No-nonsense singing and arranging so that what you hear is the song Kern wrote--not a performaner's special interpretation that is more about the performer than the song. Most sound as if they are right out of the show that generated the song in the first place. If you want top drawer musicality of performers that match the composer's, this is far better than the compilations of assorted pop singers. It's all about Kern's music.
