Hearts and Minds
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Singer Susannah McCorkle's intelligence has long made her one of America's most honorably perceptive interpreters of popular song. Hearts and Minds suffers only in comparison with McCorkle's Songs of Johnny Mercer, Let's Face the Music: The Songs of Irving Berlin, and Easy to Love: The Songs of Cole Porter. While it contains her familiar touchstones of wistful ballads, wry humor, and Brazilian rhythmic seasoning, the material almost necessarily doesn't measure up. Three songs apiece from Dave Frishberg and Fran Landesman, plus McCorkle's own "The Computer Age (In Motion)," tilt the scales a little too heavily toward a more jaded modern sensibility. With 18 records and knowledge of some 3,000 tunes under her belt, McCorkle has every reason to want to stretch beyond the classic American songbook. Yet despite all the wit and savoir faire she invests in "My Attorney Bernie" and "Feet Do Your Stuff," what lingers is the way she revels on the extended notes of the Gershwin brothers' "Love Is Here to Stay," sliding her voice into the lyrics as if they were a fur coat. --Britt Robson

ANTI-DAN DAVIS.......2006-03-24
THE BEST JAZZ SINGER SINCE BILLIE HOLIDAY IS ALWAYS A DELIGHT WITH A SENSOUSNESS SORELY LACKING IN ELLA, SARAH AND CARMEN, ALWAYS EXCEPTING THE MAGICAL PEGGY LEE. THIS IS REALLY A REVIEW TO PICK ON DAN DAVIS WHO APPEARS TO HAVE EXCEPTIONAL TASTE EXCEPT IN HIS EXTREMELY BIZARRE REVIEW OF SUSANNAH MCCORKLE. HER COMPOSER-LYRICIST ALBUMS ARE FAR SUPERIOR TO ANY ELLA OR SARAH SONGBOOKS EXCEPTING ELLA'S ELLINGTON. GIVE HER ANOTHER LISTEN, DAN
Hearts and Minds-An Afterlook of Susannah.......2004-11-26
This is a good album. I must say something, I loved Susannah and her singing. Living in Dallas, I used to ask the Fairmount Hotel to get her, but they always said in spite of how good they knew she was, her name was not big enough to draw. I go back with her to the 33 RPM Records, not all brought forward yet. While any of her albums are great, she got me forever when she recorded "I'm Just A Little Girl From Little Rock" with Keith Ingham doing "Little Rock Getaway" as a backup. Dave Frishberg was a big pal. I really recommend album "No More Blues" with pal Dave, "Swing That Music" and "Ballad of Pearly Sue". Susannah's thing was doing the "songbook" music when others were not, leading the way back for singers like Monheit, Stacey Kent, even Dianna Krall.
We should remember that when any of us do music, it is like stripping your soul bare and running naked. You are exposed and vulnerable. Compared to most others who did this without much recognition, Susannah lived a long happy life. I still love her and will always think of her as a friend. Dick Chapman, Florida
Brilliant to the end.......2003-08-09
When this album was released, we were not to know that this was to be Susannah's last set of new recordings. The pictures on the cover and inside suggest that Susannah was very happy with life, even if she had put on a lot of weight. No clues in the song selection either, which were mostly typical of the material that Susannah recorded, except Computer age, a witty song about modern life that she wrote herself. Yet, less than a year after the release of this album, Susannah committed suicide.
Aside from Computer age, there are a few songs from Susannah's traditional source, the Great American Songbook, but on this album there are many more contemporary songs than usual. The set begins with two popular oldies - I can dream can't I and Love is here to stay. Do not panic if you normally buy Susannah's album for the oldies - some of the contemporary songs are excellent, including Feet do your stuff and Do you miss New York.
This album may be a little different from Susannah's earlier music, but it's not that different and it is, of course, brilliant. I have never worked out which is her best album of all, but I do not need to because they are all wonderful.
"it could happen to you & I can dream can't I".......2001-12-08
Susannah McCorkle returns with another Concord Jazz release...flying their banner high with this ballad of love songs---stand outs "I CAN DREAM, CAN'T I", puts her signature on this one, McCorkle is one of the few vocalist that sing the verse of a song..."FOR ALL WE KNOW", again Susannah brings a lyrical verse to a classic tune, beautiful dreamy arrangement..."IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU", remember Betty Grable singing this one in the '40s, both verse and chorus make a statement..."HAUNTED HEART", very sensual with a blend of the bossa-nova, gotta love it.
Concord fans of Jazz understand why they listen to this genre...when I play Concord albums, enjoyment mixed with satisfaction comes over me...this latest Concord CD from Susannah McCorkle hits the spot!

Wonderful and winsome.......2001-11-10
Susannah McCorkle may not have always hit a home run every time out but even the work that is not as great is a far sight better than most. What makes Susannah incomparable is her ability to take a group of songs that do not appear to be very distinguished, and yet make them into memorable tunes. Such is the case with Hearts and Minds.
One common trait that puncutates her recordings is her ability to handle works from a very diverse group of songwriters. Susannah can handle a Rogers and Hammerstein tune ("Love Look Away") with one track and on the next one, go right into a Dave Frishberg tune ("My Attorney Bernie") on the next. (Frishberg, who wrote songs like "Van Lingle Mungo" and the Krall anthem "Peel Me A Grape" does not appear on this CD as he does on others).
While there are the usual contributions from notables like George Gershwin's "Love is Here to Stay" and Jimmy Van Heusen's "It Could Happen to You", one of the most notable songs on this CD is Frishberg's "Do You Miss New York". While this may capture Frishberg's own feeling about leaving New York for California, it has become a question that we all can ask these days.
Finally, Susannah also gives one of her own tunes a spin - "The Computer Age (In Motion)", which she wrote with Thelmo Porto.
Hearts and Minds came along in the last year of Susannah's life and does give a glimpse of what she might have been thinking. The CD opens with "I Can Dream, Can't I?" and closes with "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire", which may have been the case since she doesn't seem to have gotten the admiration and respect which she was due. In between these tunes is "Do You Miss New York?" and perhaps a question Susannah is asking herself in the afterlife.
We miss you Susannah. More than you will ever know.

One of Nitzer Ebb's best singles........2006-01-22
I remember searching thru Bleeker Bob's and Vinyl Fetish in Hollywood searching for the 7" single of this song. I never found it, but I did get ahold of the 12" and Limited 12".
For a while the 'Belief' cassette was the only one I had and I played it non-stop for months.
The two versions of 'Hearts and Minds' are really great. That was back when they just extended songs rather than tying some lame house music medley to everything.
'For Fun' gets its deserved remix, and 'Time Slips By' (the original flipside to the single) gets remixed very nicely as well.

Customer Reviews:
An Up & Coming Artist who has arrived!.......2001-03-08
This is the one. Of all the previous df/SONiA stuff, this is the best! It has a from-the-gut confidence to it that I think finally puts her up there with the big boys where she belongs. I saw her at a gig in a bookstore where she absolutely rocked the quiet little house. She is truly an amazing performer. Just her guitar, harmonica and voice sound like an entire band - nothing is missing from the sound. Still folky, but more full and cohesive. The title track brings me to tears every time with its honest strength. Buy this CD purely for the sound or for the meaning in the lyrics, you won't be sorry either way - the two meld like PB & J. And try & catch her live sometime!
You want variety?.......2000-04-16
With her throaty sounds in "opinion #33", make-you-get-up-and-dance rhythm in "My Baby" and the wonderful proclamation borrowed from Harvey Fierstein in "grass for the lambs", you cannot miss with this latest contribution to the earth from SONiA. Oh, and if you're having a bad day, crank up "turtle flowers" complete with the opening and closing conversations between SONiA and Dylan V. It heals my soul with each listen.
Only SONiA.......1999-12-21
Without a doubt there is no singer/songwriter in the country and perhaps the world with the depth of SONiA. She continues to write about the world in ways which touch your soul. You will smile at "Bumblebee", dance to "Lovesick" and "My Baby", and cry with "Me,Too" and love everything before and after. I love It!
Sonia's best effort in years.......1999-11-19
I've been a fan since the early days of disappear fear, and have missed Cindy on the last couple of CDs and tours as well. But "Me, too" showcases Sonia in what may be her best work yet. Good music, good lyrics, and fine production by Sonia and John Grant.
And this is an independent release -- support indie music!
True Delight.......1999-11-05
On 'Me Too' SONiA truly shines musically and lyrically. My lasting first impression was 'this is a happy album,' one that can be listened to over and over. Highly recommended

Gangsta Dre and Young Jayda.......2006-01-02
The best bay area rap cd of all time with gangsta dre really young!!! his 1st cd!!!
Still sitten on the Kurb with my man Gangsta Dre.......2004-12-16
I first heard this CD in 99 and felt Gangsta Dre as a true lyrisist. His complex verses proved that he was fo sure seasoned for an eighteen year old. I felt just as though he was taking my thoughts and puttin them on wax. Much love Gangsta Dre, keepin it real. Wish you would come out with some new music Bro.
U ain't got to worry bout no high ni!!a kick back and get..........2003-08-31
this is defintely one of the dopest sac albums to date. Bet when blackmarket went bankrupt they wish they kept dre, young jayda and the rest of the B side of the company. For all you that don't know who dre iz where you been? This is unkomparible to Brotha lynch so don't try to put them on the same page. Dre comes way more real than Lynch ever could.the bottom line is If you want to see rap at its finest grab this cd it will show the blood, sweat, and tears some artists are willing to put into their music.Gangsta dre seems to be one of the realest rappers out, he came w/ gangbangin poetry 1 and 2, inner city poet, and here comes the night not to mention the work he has accomplished with hollow tip and mic-c. He still puts it down with young jayda and nonfiktion. Although his best work is done all by his lonely the great depression will show you that. Stay up for all the real fools in this game tryin to get their piece of the pie. SUPPORT THE REAL!!!! BUY this don't bootleg it.
Have Balls Have Heart.......2001-09-29
All you'll hatin on my BLOOD Gangsta Dre need to chill out I like most of his music and his new cd is killing off any Gangsta albums I heard for a couple of years there aint to many B-DOGGZ with that much heart to come out banging like that besides DAMU-RIDAZ besides them Gangsta Dre gots lyriks that are untouchable you dont hear sista lynch saying a word about sakks finest(Gangsta Dre)or about being a rip dre's more about spitting reality than set trippen he has more of a loki rep and is very versatile he started rapping at age 16 and if you heard his old musik you would understand the musik in 94-95 did'nt have the digital beats like today but his flows were still tight I was aware that he was a BLOOD from day one and was glad to here his homies representing on -here comes the night- he's a true and I support all his musik BLOOD im out cK-ya
Slept on Artists.......2001-07-19
Gangsta Dre is one of the best rappers on the west coast. He is slept on by a lot of people and no one really knows him. He has a different style of rap which I like. Its not about cars, bigs houses, and havin money. In stead he raps about livin in the projects and smokin his newport. I can listen to this Cd from start to finish. Some of his best songs on this Cd are "Inner City Poey", "Sittin By Da Edge of Da Curb"," Da Early Bird Gets Da Worm", and "Let it rain". By this Cd and support this guy.

Finally At Long Last.......2007-01-23
As a native growing up in the DC.Md & Va area I first heard Larry like most folks on Firefalls first LP, But lost track after their 4th Album Undertow, Until one night in 1982 I was walking home through the streets of Arlington Va. and came across a dinner club called Eskimo Nells, on their Marquee it listed " Tonight ,Larry Burnett formerly of Firefall " So I went in and sat for 90+ minutes and was completely blown away by Larry's performance ,and as it turned out Larry was booked to play there every Tuesday night for some time to come ,So like many other devoted fans I would drop in each Tuesday night and listen to his sets and as time went on I began bringing other friends to hear Larry's shows ,we got on his mailing list and attended gig's Larry played around the local region, Also I became friends with Larry ,being a Guitarist myself,Larry was ever so kind to show me open tunings on the guitar which I still use to this day being a songwriter myself, this info has been extremely valuble .
I would highly recomend this disc as it displays Larry's raw emotion and unmistakeble voice, it is a phenomanal CD,
And if your lucky enough to have all of the Firefall discs you may do like I did some time ago, select only Larry's tunesfrom the CD's and burn them onto a seperate disc for a great listening expierence ! "BUY CONFIDENCE GAME", And Get on Larry's Mailing list and E-mail Larry requesting he do more gigs in DC. Md. and Va. and then get to a Larry Burnett live performance ,One that you will remember for a very long time to come , Warren N. Tibbs,Jr
An Excellent and Unexpected Return.......2005-09-14
As you may have read above, Larry Burnett was in a big selling, major label band back in the Seventies. His new solo acoustic e.p. is a welcome and relevatory return of a talented artist who left too soon all those years ago.
Larry's guitar playing on this disc is outstanding. Never monotonous and always playful, Larry accompanies his soulful vocals with his guitar tastefully and skillfully.
His lyrics are the most striking aspect of the disc and are at once intelligent and witty and evidence a lifetime of triumph and learning. On the title track he proclaims, it's "Getting harder and harder to thrill me/I don't scare, nothing can kill me."
Mostly, though, he's cynical without being bitter. As on "Keep on Working," "My spirit's high, but my bank account's low/Bad credit but I'm a good man to know." And on "Poor Baby," "Life stinks...it's so miserable/There's no breakin' free/It's hard work to stay on top of it/and not come apart."
For anyone looking for a unique acoustic singer/songwriter CD that is musically varied, intellectually informed and never self-righteous, 'Confidence Game' will NOT disappoint. A great CD and I'm looking forward to his next one.
