Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you love Marilyn Monroe, want to get to know the actresses music better or have only heard 1 or 2 songs, you will love and cherish this album. Every great hit from the movies is here. Most people probably wouldn't believe she could sing so well, but her voice just shines in this great collection of songs. My personal favorites in this collection are "Kiss" from the movie Niagara, "I wanna be loved by you" from the movie Some like it hot, and "diamond's are a girls best friend" from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Once you hear these great songs, you will then understand why Marilyn Monroe was voted one of the top preformers of her era.

I've been waiting for this CD for years and it's finally here. Where else can you find a collection of Kalmar and Ruby songs? If you love the movie, you'll love the soundtrack. As with all Rhino soundtracks, both the audio, art work, and liner notes quality is great. Buy it before all 2500 copies are taken...

there are so many great songs sung by beautiful women-Gale robbins singing I love you so much, Arleen doll on All alone Monday, but the best is the enchanting unforgettable Thinking of you, sung by Vera Ellen, the best dancing lady ever on the screen. Sad we cant see Miss Ellen dance to the song but the wonderful scene will live in your memory. A very nice record,Also Miss Debby Reynolds does a very nice imitation of Hellen Kane on I wanna be loved by yo.

    Helen Forrest has a great voice. This CD is packed with her renditions of some really great standard tunes. A good addition to any collection of 20th century jazz music.

    Helen Forrest to me was one of the greatest voices of this century from the first time I heard her sing with Harry James and his Orchestra. I will always remember her walking through the crowd in "Springtime in the Rockies" singing "I had the Craziest Dream". This collection demonstrates her capablity with a song. I Hadn't Anyone - Shows the yearning as "Craziest Dream" did, Paradise - show her sexy side as she hums the few notes on the end of the refrain. Why she never crossed over from band singer to pop singer and made it big is a mystery to me, considering some of the talent that came out of the Big Band Era.

    I bought this CD out of curiousity. You don't see many black country singers. I am glad I did though, Rhonda is a songbird and I am really looking forward to hearing more from her!

    This is an excellent compilation of Rose Murphy's "star-making" Majestic sides of the mid-40s, with a few rare, later Decca sides thrown in for good measure. An excellent introduction to this delightful performer. So where are her fine RCA sides? Oh that's right, BMG doesn't give a damn about the history residing in their vaults. So content yourself with these happy sounds and you'll find yourself inserting "chi-chi" into every song you hear for a day or two. Sound quality is fine.

    Rose Murphy was the queen of the jump. It's a pity that her name is not included in popular jazz encyclopaedias. She sang with a unique and original style. Her delicious baby-voice and her piano full of swing made her records sounds like a sort of "dadaism" in jazz. She was in good company: some of the greatest jazz inventors (Satchmo, Fats Waller, Dizzy Gillespie) put humour in their shows and records. Listen to her performance of "I wanna be loved by you" and you will discover her influence in sexy singing style on the same song with Marilyn Monroe. Listen also to "I can't give you anything but love" and you will remember Ella Fitzgerald's imitation of her. But don't miss the album and enjoy her delicious rendition to "Best things in life are free". A Rose is a rose is rose is a rose. More than only a rose: a mighty Rose!

    Denise Perrier is a powerful singer in the Etta Jones-Irene Reid tradition. She has a very warm, nice voice. This CD is excellent but uneven. The band is very good with Houston Person on tenor and the underrated Calvin Keys on guitar. My favorite songs are "Salty Papa blues" (with a great sax solo), "September in the rain", "An occasional man" and "Don't go to strangers". Denise Perrier has done another CD(East meets West)which is even better.

    It's very a pleasant cd, and the more I listen to it the more I like it. My favorite cuts are Easy Street, An Occasional Man (not recorded very often), and Salty Papa Blues. It's good late-night easy-listening jazz without being at all bland.

    Verve records has re-released and digitally remastered "I Wanna Be Loved" that was recorded August to December 1961 & released on the Mercury label in 1962. The packaging remains faithful to the original release and the sound is given a great technical update, sounding fresh and crystal clear. Dinah Washington developed a vocal delivery that was unique. She has a way of gripping the emotions of the listener & not letting go. This set was conducted by Quincy Jones who surrounds Dinah with strings and arrangements that never overpower the singer. On "Invitation" she seems to glide over the haunting strings and piano, "Wherever I go, you're the glow of temptation, glancing my way in the grey of the dawn & always yours eyes smile that strange invitation, then you're gone." Dinah belts out the Harold Arlen standard "Let's Fall in Love" with the band swaying joyfully, "Let's close our eyes and make our own Paradise." "When Your Lover Has Gone" has that smoky late-night feel with Quincy Jones' strings swirling around Washington's vocals, creating the feel like the singer caught up in a whirlwind of emotion. Mel Torme's "A Stranger in Town" gives Dinah raw energy of romantic abandonment, "I saw a cottage on a lonely old street, weeds had grown around the gate; Somehow I felt you would wait here my sweet, but it looks like I'm too late." Dinah's version of the song "God Bless the Child" that's so associated with Billie Holiday gives Dinah's earthy vocals chance to shine. The set is bookended by Dinah's hit "I Wanna Be Loved" and the peppy "Sometimes I'm Happy" with a big band arrangement. This is an excellent set that wears well in the 43 years since its initial release by one of our most distinctive jazz/blues vocalists. Enjoy!
