Jazz 'Round Midnight: Sarah Vaughan

Editorial Reviews

There may have been no other singer in jazz with Sarah Vaughan's mix of gifts, from the sheer richness of her sound, so different in her upper and lower registers and so variable, to her inventive and absolute control of pitch for the subtlest and most telling inflections. This all-ballad program, culled from her EmArcy recordings of the '50s, represents her greatest period, and while the selection appears intended to function as mood music, it's hard to put Vaughan's voice in the background. She's more than ably supported by her regular accompanists of the period, pianist Jimmy Jones, bassists Joe Benjamin and Richard Davis, and drummer Roy Haynes, as well as an assortment of horns and strings and guest soloists like Cannonball Adderley. There's scarcely a weak tune in the lot, and when there is, e.g., "I Won't Say I Will, but I Won't Say I Won't " Vaughan turns it into a showcase for sheer vocal brilliance. Her 1954 performance of Kurt Weill's "September Song," arranged by Ernie Wilkins for a sextet and featuring the great trumpeter Clifford Brown, is a masterpiece, standing out even in this collection. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Some of the BEST of Sarah Vaughan and certainly one of .......2005-07-22

the best of the nearly three dozen albums turned out by Verve in this series!

Sarah's voice was at its finest during the period from which all but one of these cuts were taken (1954-58). One has only to listen to the way that she pauses and lingers over the notes of the opener "April In Paris" to verify this. Incidentally, this is one of four cuts on this cd that are taken from her album with Clifford Brown, arguably, one of the best jazz albums she turned out. Also one can hear Brown's Bop virtuosity in a restrained setting on "Jim" and especially muted on "September Song". There are also a couple of tracks from her fine trio album, "Swingin' Easy", a couple where she is featured with the Basie Band ("No Count Sarah"), and a couple with the Ernie Wilins band ("In The Land Of HI Fi"). These are the ones with which I'm most familiar. The others are excellent renditions of easily recognizable tunes, with the exception of "I Won't Say I Will But I Won't Say I Won't", a novelty tune that Sarah manages to pull off quite well.

This is an excellent compilation of Sarah Vaughan music that works well for her fans, lovers of late night music, fine jazz, or especially as an intro to younger fans who may not be aware of her talent and the quality and timelessness of her many recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Late Nite Slow Burner.......2001-07-11

What a great collection jazz standards made memorable by the incomparable Sarah "Sassy" Vaughan. These songs have been done to death by almost every artist in the 20th century, yet Sassy's interpretations give them new life with her unforgettable voice and artistry. Those who criticize Vaughan's lack of emotional commitment or lyrical competency in her songs are in for a surprise and real treat. There's great feeling behind these songs. She never botches any attempt to add a wistful moment or tender touch. This CD might as well be called "Sassy's Torch Songs" because they ARE. A wonderful CD to sit by the fire with or when that special person has walked out the door for the last time. Her warm, rich voice will just bathe you in an afterglow.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Jazz Ballads.......1999-06-18
