My Foolish Heart
Editorial Reviews
DownBeat, Zan Stewart - August, 1999
In a wide ranging voice Gallinger tackles such favorites as "Gentle Rain", "Just Friends" and "The Way You Look Tonight" with spirit.
L.A. Jazz Scene ... July 1998
No stranger to the Orange County Jazz Scene, Karen Gallingers release of her second CD My Foolish Heart is a tribute to her popularity in Southern California.
Album Description
Sea Breeze Jazz is pleased to announce the release of My Foolish Heart, by vocalist Karen Gallinger. The long awaited follow up to her 1995 release Live At The Jazz Bakery, this new project provides Ms. Gallinger an opportunity to explore the wide range and depth of her artisitic abilities. The performances on this CD flow smoothly from the warm richness of the Latin selections (Gentle Rain, Bridges, Someone To Light Up My Life) to the groove of solid swing (Just Friends, Isn't It Romantic) but, as she proved with her first project, the subtleties, textures and shadings of her ballads (My Foolish Heart, The Way You Look Tonight) place her firmly in the category of world class vocalists. Produced by composer/arranger Tom Zink, this hand-picked group of L.A.-based musicians shines, from the lush string arrangements and sax solos, to the gritty lowdown blues.
My Foolish Heart
My Foolish Heart, Music, Karen Gallinger, Jazz, Jazz & Blues Vocalist with the perfect mix of elegance and power. A rich, full-bodied voice that carries you along through the deep insides of the music., Mainstream Jazz, Pop, Standards

Nancy LaMott lives on in her music.......2007-03-11
I am utterly sentimental about Nancy. I am a fan of cabaret, the "great era of American popuilar song," etc. Sadly I never heard LaMott in person though I sort of collect performances by the great ladies of song: Carmen McRae, Mabel Mercer, Susannah McCorkle, Wesla Whitfield, etc. God help us all, they are passing too quickly. So this recording is richly prized. A great voice, great music.

Wonderful Voice!.......2007-03-09
Thanks to Jonathan Schwartz and the High Standards XM radio station #73, I discovered Nancy LaMott. Sometimes at first listen, she sounds like Streisand and other times like Celine, but she is truly a unique and rare voice of our time that has apparently been overlooked in the mainstream. This CD is just wonderful, though I am sad to learn of her untimely passing in 1995. She could have given us so much more.
Like a warm bath: close your eyes and let yourself be soothed!!.......2007-03-09
A friend from New York sent me a tape of this album some 10 years ago, he was totally wild about it and I agreed, it became one of my favorites. Unfortunately in this era of CD's, I lost the possibility to play the tape and in Holland no-one had even heard of Nancy LaMott, let alone that I could find a CD of hers anywhere. Hurray for Amazon.com, for when I finally had the wits to try the site, there were like three or four albums of Nancy LaMott, and only then I learned about the fact that she passed away much too young some time ago now. So these albums are all that's left, and some of them were afterwards put together by adding orchestrations to a number of recordings that she left behind and that originally were accompanied only by piano. These albums all show what a talent she was and what a waste that she only lived so short!! She has such a lovely voice, she sings with such easy charm and the choice of songs is perfectly fitting to her personality and her voice: easy-going, some a little blue, some a little jazzy and all, in a casual way, with conviction and style. My absolute favorite is the opening song: "my foolish heart", which for some reason always brings me near to tears. So dim the lights, take a glass of wine, slowly lower yourself in the warm bath of the music and enjoy!!
Wonderful.......2007-01-10
She has a superb voice that is lovely to hear. The title song is my favorite.
An Absolute Gem.......2006-05-27
If you are tired of hearing vapid, manufactured voices and overworked orchestrations, this recording will be a most welcome change. Nancy LaMott sings with one of the purest instruments I've ever heard. Every word is crystal clear. Her phrasing and inflection will touch your heart at its core regardless of whether the cut is uptempo or romantic. Every note is perfectly rounded and sung with such ease that it is beyond beautiful. Knowing that her voice has been stilled makes any recording by Ms. LaMott a poignant reminder of how tenuous life is, but don't be misled by sentiment. This is a "must have" CD for today, tomorrow and always.

Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age is the sequel to Itzhak Perlman's popular album of movie themes performed with soundtrack composer John Williams. Unlike its predecessor, this disc focuses on classic cinema themes and features the Boston Pops Orchestra, not the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Laura theme, as well as Max Steiner's Now Voyager and Miklós Rózsa's Lost Weekend themes, sound lush and romantic in Perlman's lyrical hands. The traditional Irish jig "The Quiet Man" is the disc's most upbeat moment, while the unforgettable Gone with the Wind theme is its most memorable. These are timeless, dreamy compositions, though not necessarily the most uplifting. If you're looking for something cinematic to get your heart racing, check out Ricardo Chailly's recording of Shostakovich's film scores or even Leopold Stokowski's classic work on Fantasia. --Jason Verlinde

Perlman, Williams reunite in wonderful Serenade sequel.......2003-12-04
With the success of Cinema Serenade, conductor John Williams and violinist Itzhak Perlman reunited to record another collection of classic movie themes. Performed this time by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the music of Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age harkens back to the days of stars such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Ray Milland and Clark Gable.
The 12 selections include themes by Hollywood legends Max Steiner, Miklos Rozsa and Erich Wolfgang Korngold (whose son George would later produce several of composer/conductor Williams' scores for Varese Sarabande Records). Cinema Serenade 2 presents beautiful arrangements of Steiner's themes for Now, Voyager and Gone With The Wind, Korngold's love theme from The Adventures of Robin Hood, Charlie Chaplin's lovely Modern Times and "St Patrick's Day," a traditional Irish song from the John Wayne classic The Quiet Man.
Since I consider myself to be a charter member of The Rick Blaine Society of Rank Sentimentalists, I'd have to say my favorite tracks on this album are Herman Hupfeld's timeless "As Time Goes By" from 1942's Casablanca and Victor Young's "My Foolish Heart" (from the 1949 film of the same title). It was while I was listening to the radio (on the late WTMI 93.1 FM classical station) that the DJ played "As Time Goes By" and I discovered this recording of mostly lyrical themes; I listened to Perlman's haunting violin solos and the Boston Pops' bravura performance and nearly wept. I, of course, bought this CD the next day and it's now one of my favorites.
For fans of Itzhak Perlman, John Williams or film music in general, both of the Cinema Serenade CDs are a treasure trove of beautiful and memory-stirring themes.
Some of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear.......2001-06-15
This is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever heard. The selections are musically much richer than Cinema Serenade I. In particular, Sir William Walton's music from Henry V, Korngold's music from Robin Hood, and Newman's music from Wuthering Heights are standouts. The Korngold is my favorite, with several themes from the picture packed into a short love scene lifted straight from the movie. The arrangements on this album are stunningly lush, especially those by Williams. His opening chords from The Uninvited are terrific harmonically.
Don't compare it to Cinema Serenade 1.......2000-01-24
Itzhak Perlman is still considered by me the best violinist alive today. His techiniques are so impressable and heartouching and nobody can contest that. The idea of this CD was wonderful, although the selections of the musics aren't so good than in Cinema Serenade 1. But anyway, if you want to listen musics that worldwide the people emotioned with, buy this CD, but don't fall in the temptation to compare it to the first one.
I can't stop listening to this CD...........1999-10-03
All of those lush movie themes are greatly compiled on this CD. I especially liked Laura and Stella by Starlight. After listening to this, you will want to go out and buy/rent these great old movies!

Kurt Weill: Re-discovery..........2006-11-10
I am so impressed and pleased to have found this recording on Amazon.com. I am always amazed when I find these seemingly obscure recordings, and thrilled to know they exist. What a wonderful history of our musical world---and what a chance to hear interesting, challenging, and unusual performances from so many well-known people. The songs live on--the composer is 'new' again, and this recording becomes part of history re-discovered. Thank you Amazon.com for your continued professionalism and for having these recordings available.
Incredible Live Album.......2002-02-10
This incredible concert (which i attended) benefitting The Actors' Fund of America, contains some absolute MUST performances for any Broadway collector.
For me, the highlights are HUGH PANARO ("It Never Was You"), NANCY DUSSAULT ("It's Him") and TIM CURRY singing "Surabaya Johnny" in German!
Loretta Divine, Brock Peters, they're all great!

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

ultimately boring.......2007-04-07
Listening to one track tells the story for everything else to come. She sings everything the same way - sorry but ultimately, in the end - it's a bore....
an undiscovered gem.......2006-11-17
Rebecca Parris is a jazz singer with a beautiful alto and a style of her own While she may not be hip or young or sexy, she's the real thing. I'm not crazy about some of the synthesized orchestrations accompanying Ms. Paris- otherwise I would have given the CD 5 stars.
5-PLUS Stars******************************************.......2005-12-29
Rebecca Parris, in my view, is arguably the single most expressive jazz singer, male or female, out there today. Her impeccable phrasing, timing, nuanced vocal tone, and innate musicality make her voice unmistakable and irresistable to listen to. An extraordinarily high-quality performance. Her version of the title song, "My Foolish Heart", makes every other version I've heard seem tame and passionless. I give her 5-plus stars!
Authoritative and Compelling.......2003-11-11
There's no shortage of releases by female singers these days, unless you're talking performers who, like Sinatra on his best "concept" albums, are capable of sustaining a program of torchers--"saloon songs," or "suicide songs," as Sinatra called them, those soliloquies of the solitary soul that require us to journey to a quiet place where the world disappears and time stops. Shirley Horn accomplished it--with a great assist from Johnny Mandel--on "Here's to Life." Jack Jones did it recently on his Tony Bennett Tribute CD. And Rebecca Parris pulls it off on this session.
Hers is a distinctive voice--it might take some getting used to but it's arguably impossible not to. She grabs the listener by the collar and shakes him into submission. The bold yet androgynous timbre, the slow and wide vibrato, the conscious shaping of every phrase and effect and the commanding skills of a great dramatic actress practically assure the assent of the listener, even someone unfamiliar with the tunes.
And the song selections couldn't be better. "When October Goes" rivals the singular performance of the tune by Rosemary Clooney, just as "Crazy He Calls Me," an inspired choice, does justice by the classic Etta Jones' performance. Perhaps the singer takes the most chances on "Never Let Me Go," investing an already hypnotic melody with the emotional urgency of a Method actress. Her version of Tad Dameron's "If You Could See Me Now" would eclipse other versions by female singers (no one's matched Johnny Hartman's version), were it not for the unfortunate addition of synthesized effects to the sensitive support of the piano trio.
As for anyone who finds a program like this "boring," perhaps the problem rests less with the borer than the boree.
My Foolish Heart.......2003-01-26
This is by far- the cd I play the most often! If you appreciate the sound of a phenom vocal talent and song stylist- don't miss this . At first listening I thought- gosh, this is a little slow-- then I realized that it was ME- that my life was too fast! This CD can take you to levels of relaxation and emotion you didn't think were possible-

Kurt Weill's ballet with songs is one of this century's greatest theatrical works. It has all the wit and melodic appeal of The Threepenny Opera and social conscience of Mahagonny, but more warmth and musical sophistication than either. It's also all over with in about 40 minutes. Some critics believe the piece was intended as a sort of love poem to Weill's wife, Lotte Lenya; given the tenderness of much of the music, it's hard to disagree. Lenya herself recorded the piece in the 1950s (a recording recently reissued by Sony) and this very much newer performance is welcome particularly for Anne Sofie von Otter's highly intelligent and musical way with the text. The other songs, from both Weill's Berlin and Broadway periods, make the perfect filler. --David Hurwitz

Very Good.......2006-01-03
This is a very nice selection of Weill pieces showing the full range of his output. These range from the ambitious Seven Deadly Sins to songs from Happy End to some of his Broadway work. All are very interesting. The performers, particularly Von Otter, are excellent. Recommended strongly.
Excellent Weill Alternative to Lenya and Lemper.......2005-09-29
`Speak Low Songs by Kurt Weill' is a great addition to the performances of Herr Weill's works by the prominent mezzo-soprano, Anne Sofie Von Otter. I have listened to many performances by Weill specialists from the archetype, Weill's wife, Lotte Lenys, for whom many of the songs were originally written to Ute Lemper and Gisela May, who lean heavily toward Lotte Lenya's gravel-voiced interpretation of Weill's songs.
Anne Sofie Von Otter breaks with this tradition and gives us what are easily the sweetest interpretations of Weill's songs from both his German and English works, which I have heard anywhere.
The flagship performance on this disc is `Die Sieben Todsunden' (`The Seven Deadly Sins') which was a cycle of songs to be sung on the stage, accompanied by dances done by a second performer. This takes the first nine (9) tracks and is at least as good as what I have heard from Weill specialist, Lemper. This album is the first time I have noticed that there are two versions of this work, and that Ms. Von Otter is performing the version for soprano.
But, I think the most moving performances come later, especially in von Otter's performances of the three numbers from `Happy End', `Bilbao-Song', `Surabaya-Johnny', and `Das Lied von der harten Nuss' (Song of the Big Shot). I have heard these done by many people, but never so sweetly. These numbers are so lovingly performed that I insist that you ignore the fact that the lyrics are in German. The accompanying booklet gives English translations, which I simply ignore and enjoy the musical talent with no filter. My understanding German has nothing to do with this, as I do the same with French, which I can just barely make out.
Kurt Weill may not be the most important influence on American musical theatre in the 20th century, but he is easily in the top five, along with the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers and collaborators, and Cole Porter.
Ms. Von Otter is ably accompanied on this disk by her favorite pianist, Bengt Forsberg plus the Norddeutch Rundfunk orchestra directed by John Eliot Gardiner. While I really like her selection on this disk, the collection makes me wish Ms. Von Otter would do some more Weill and spend less time hanging out with Elvis Costello, but that's a different story.
Everything is right but the style.......2005-09-24
Weill and Brecht defined a nasty age with nasty art, writing some of the grittiest satire in the history of music. In this CD von Otter misses that edge, skirts all the dangerous, sleazy implications, and ultimately sounds too much the opera singer slumming it for an hour. Her earnestness is no subtitute for the right period style, a la Lotte Lenya.
Intelligent reading from both singer and conductor.......2005-01-27
THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS is such a brilliant mini-masterpiece (and, to me, the pinnacle of the Brecht-Weill years) that it is hard to screw up. It is a testament to the staying power of this work (and to the brilliance of Weill's music in general) that it can be performed by the likes of Lotte Lenya, Julia Migenes, Ute Lemper, Judy Kaye, Marianne Faithfull, Teresa Stratas, and -- as here -- Anne Sofie von Otter, and STILL work... and EACH of these women are totally successful in the piece on their own terms.
Here, Anne Sofie von Otter gives us an intelligent (and highly musical) rendering of the text, keeping the musical line very much intact. She sings with vibrato at times, and then will turn around and use straight-tones at moments where it is dramatically appropriate to do so. She balances the performance well, shifting gears between cool detachment (which she is often criticized for) and impassioned outbursts (which her critics often fail to notice).
John Eliot Gardiner surprised me with how easily this music seemed to come to him, especially as he seems to be a man more at home with "Period-Instrument-Mozart" than highly charged 20th century works. However, his reading of "The Rake's Progress" by Stravinsky was totally staggering. For example, his choice beginning the climactic moment of the score ("Envy") as slowly as he does caught me very much off guard at first, and I didn't really care for it at all. However, with each successive listen, I find myself "getting" this choice more and more.
Finally, the "filler." As to be expected, she is more successful with the European material than she is with the songs from Weill's Broadway years. But this is the case with about 99.9% of all opera singers who try to sing Weill's Broadway scores. You will never hear any singer give "Je ne t'aime pas" a more hauntingly beautiful, passionately intense performance than Anne Sofie von Otter. Truly, the ultimate interpretation of one of my favorite Weill songs. "Nannas Lied," "Der Abschiedsbrief," and the HAPPY END selections. However, "My Ship" and "One Life to Live" seem to fail at catching fire -- the former because it is marred by an attempt to sound like a "pop singer," the latter because von Otter sings English better than native speakers (she knows where the ACTUAL emphasis in the phrase "nothing: the thing is to have fun" goes, as opposed to where Ira Gershwin placed it). I also -- surprisingly enough -- don't care for her performance of "Schickelgruber" -- she just seems totally lost to me. (I really think that this song is foreign territory to 'legit' sopranos and mezzos -- I don't even care for the Stratas rendition.) Just when I thought I would have to suffer through another bad batch of "opera-crossover," Anne Sofie turned around and surprised me by giving highly successful performances of the numbers from ONE TOUCH OF VENUS (especially on "I'm Stranger Here Myself").
All in all, a worthy purchase: highly recommended to all fans of THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS and Kurt Weill enthusiasts.
Brilliant--The best of the 7 Deadly Sins recordings.......2002-10-12
Weill, and particularly anything Brecht-Weill, has suffered for too long with interpertations based on tired ham theatrics, burlesques of Lenya's style, to the point where we have come to expect it as the only way to sing this music. Lenya herself is said, late in life, to have commented that a better singer (specifically Stratas at that time) would be more appropriate for properly interpreting Weill's music.
Here, after countless CD releases of the Seven Deadly Sins, is the first recording sung in the key the composer originally intended! The result is relevatory, sublime and magnificent.
Ms. Von Otter interprets the rest of the songs with mixed results--all are lovely, several are excellent, though several others have been handled better by singers with more "theatrical" talents. Nevertheless, this recording stands alone, head and shoulders above the others.

My Dead Heart.......2007-06-08
I couldn't believe my eyes when I heard this CD. The title track is the worst I ever heard. There's no single right key in this playing. I felt asleep after 2 minutes.
Even in a late night bar people should kill her.
I give 0 stars
Smooth, sensational, and soothing.......2005-07-26
I bought this album a number of years ago and was enamored of its slow & melodic pace, the crispness of the piano, and the way it seemed to curl up inside my brain. I could never help but feel relaxed while listening. Peppered with older standards and some not-so-recognizeable material, it is a wispy dream taken musical form. And the best part - my 4-month old daughter falls to sleep within 5 minutes of my putting it on, no matter how cranky she is. Highly recommended for anyone with a fussy baby.
This cd will put you in a great mood.......2000-09-28
What an uplifting event this cd has been. It is guaranteed to put you on cloud nine. This is the kind of jazz that I truly like. It is very easy to follow. The improvision is not to far off base. Liz definetly has the talent to entertain you. She has a good touch with the piano.
The only draw back about this cd, is the fact that I didn't like all the repertoire that was performed. Some of the songs I had never heard of before. Other than that, I think this is a cd that most will enjoy.
I Would Like To Recommend This CD
A beautifully imagined, technically proficient tour-de-force.......1998-11-23
Ms. Story's selection of material showcases her ability to plumb the emotional depths of a song and the technical facility with which she goes about her task. This collection of repertoire sets a standard against which other pop pianists must measure their arrangements and their interpretations. Never settling for the commonplace, Ms. Story continually finds imaginative, creative and musically sophisticated ways to reinterpret these generally familiar tunes. This is a collection that can be listened to repeatedly and always offers new rewards. Put a log on the fire, pour some wine, embrace someone you love and enjoy.
