Album Description

Singer-songwriter Courtney Jaye's debut album, "Traveling Light," embodies all the surprising and enthralling qualities of pop music; Jaye writes recognizably real-life stories from the inside out--stories that anybody who's ever been young and in love will relate to--and she delivers them in a beguilingly, natural voice.

Working with producer Peter Collins (Indigo Girls, Jewel, Elton John) and a studio band of handpicked musicians, including drummer Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel, Tears for Fears, John Mayer) and guitarist Rusty Anderson (Ednaswap, Paul McCartney), Jaye fearlessly swings for the fences throughout her first at-bat, and she consistently connects. This young artist is stepping up to the plate with a fistful of memorable songs she's fashioned with, among others, Matthew Sweet, the Jayhawks' Gary Louris, Butch Walker, and former Veruca Salt co-leader Nina Gordon, all skilled songsmiths who share her belief in the enduring expressive potential of the verse, chorus and bridge.

As others have said, a pleasant surprise.......2007-04-10

I first heard Hanalei Road on Yahoo Launchcast, and fell in love with the song. As I've done before, I went ahead and purchased the CD based on this one track. But unlike many other times I've done this, this time I wasn't disappointed. Yes, at first listen the tracks on this CD have a pop sound, but there's both a depth and quirkiness both to her music and lyrics that goes beyond pop. A number of the songs stick with you, and there's a nice variety of tracks. I look forward to her second album.

An Outstanding Debut.......2006-09-04

Of the various new female pop singers that have come along recently (such as Hope Partlow, Tristan Prettyman, Vaughn Penn, Brie Larson, KT Tunstall, Tegan and Sara), Courtney Jaye has produced by far the most accomplished and beautiful album. The others all pale in comparison. Her music, voice, and lyrics are so transcendently superior as to defy the imagination. Compared to her, the others are engaged in mere child's play. Jaye's album is so stunningly brilliant that it moves the listener toward ecstasy. If you can afford only one CD, hers would be the one to choose, and let the others remain to gather dust. In every way, and on every song, her voice is plangent, ringing out like a clear bell tolling through fog, bringing us to a place of resplendent beauty.

One warning: Every song is fabulous except for one. Though I know that several reviewers love the song "Hanalei Road," I must take exception. Jaye's portion of the singing is as wonderful as any other song. But then the bottom falls out with the profoundly grotesque vocals of Taj Mahal. His portion of the duet is hideous, execrable, unforgivable. How Jaye allowed her song to be so destroyed is beyond my comprehension. To hear Taj Mahal desecrate Jaye's song is to experience one of the most horrifying moments in music history. She must be forgiven, however, since the CD as a whole is so fantastically marvelous.

A Brilliant Debut Album, From A Brilliant Singer/Songwriter!.......2006-08-03

Don't let a few bad reviews fool you! This is easily one of the best albums out there! There's not a bad song in the bunch! And Courtney Jaye is easily one of best and most original singer/songwriters around also! And she's worked with some of the best in the business to create this musical masterpiece! This is nothing like the average pop music you hear, It has more of a hawaiian sound on some songs, I noticed that the first time i heard it! She calls it rootsy/exotic/alt/pop on her myspace page! That's one of the things i like most about the album! Plus the songs are all so fun, catchy, and dreamy, and she has such a great singing voice, i just can't get enough of it! And there's something for everyone to like! I really love all of the songs so much! But if i had to pick any favorites probably" Time For Goodbye" "This Is The Day" "Love me" and "Hanalei Road" to name a few! So please buy this album and listen to the whole thing, with an open mind, and listen more than once! If you're anything like me and really like great music that's different than the usual dull boring music you're used to hearing, I know you'll love it as much as i do! Courtney Jaye is one very talented artist that has real staying power! She's already finished her next album so that's proof of that! And from what i've heard of it, it's great also! I know she certainly has a life long fan in me!

Quite nice.......2006-06-15

20 something Courtney Jaye has a soulfull voice and her songs are more folksy than pop. To me, she sounds like a mix between Carrie Underwood and Norah Jones - with a little bit of Sheryl Crow mixed in. Her music will probably appeal more to older listeners, but some catchy tunes like 'Cant Behave' and 'Mental' will surely appeal to younger listeners as well.

The best songs on the album include 'Cant Behave', 'Lose My Head', 'Can You Sleep' and 'Mental'. This album has something for everyone. It's calming and fun at the same time.

Courtney Jaye is surley a great new artist and i cant wait for the next album.

Courtney Jaye's Top Work So Far.......2006-03-28

Traveling light is Courtney Jaye's best album so far. Her unique soft rock sound is really made evident on this CD. It was produced by Gal (Gala) Asher an excellent choice. With a mix of uptempos and smooth ballads, Courtney Jaye easily tops her previous albums.

I finally found it!.......2006-03-03

I was searching for that song Traveling Light for quite a while. I heard it on the radio and really liked it. I'm going to buy this cd just for that song..and it's worth it!

Easy Going, Easy Listening.......2003-01-15

This is a very mellow, relaxing CD. It's not acoustic worship and it's not the same old songs people are remaking. Although the artists are varied, they all keep the same 'vibe' throughout the CD, keeping it from being choppy for the listener. I heard this while shopping in the bookstore, and bought it immediately. I bought it for the music, not because such and such artist is on it, so if you are into artists..you will like this even more. The songs have lots of repetition, like a worship CD without 'being' a worship CD if you know what I mean. I really like the title track "Traveling Light"; that one deserves some radio play!! It's very healing and nurturing music. I play it at work at all day at my computer.

True Songs of Faith.......2002-10-01

What a wonderful compilation of praise and worship! Within this album you are able to enjoy the beat and still enter a place to spend time with the Lord! As a Pastor I suggest this CD to all and not just for believers, but non-believers alike!

We are all asking questions in life and these artists have shown examples of how a personal relationship with Christ answers those questions. Their utilization of music to express the meaning of Psalm 23 will truly enrich your walk through life and provide you with direction for that personal relationship that we all need. You will also be able to see that the void in our lives that we have all felt is a God shaped hole that only He can fill!

Another fine addition to the series.......2001-02-13

After a bit of a slip with the second, this series was back on track with this third CD of songs cut from well-known musicals. As I mentioned in a previous review, just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). Once again, the songs are all good and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Mama's Talking Soft" (cut from Gypsy), "Big Fat Heart" (Seesaw), "Your Own College Band" (Where's Charley?), "When I Go Out Walkin' with my Baby" (Oklahoma!), and "Pick Up the Pieces" (also Seesaw). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This CD features some fine songs that deserve renewed appreciation.

a brand-new cast and a brand-new look at a classic.......2003-02-07

This all-new touring production of GUYS AND DOLLS has been touted the 50th Anniversary Production, and has been given the seal of approval by none other than Mrs Frank Loesser herself.

This cast is headlined by veteran Maurice Hines as Nathan Detroit, and features Brian Sutherland as Sky, Diane Sutherland as Sarah Browne and Alexandra Foucard as Miss Adelaide.

The cast is uniformably excellent; Hines has the right amount of attitude as Nathan, Brian Sutherland's beautiful voice is well-suited to Sky, real-life wife Diane is a thrillingly-realised Sarah, and Alexandra Foucard is a bewitching mix of both Vivian Blaine and Faith Prince.

This cast started out at a production by the Arena Stage in Washington before heading out for a touring season in an all-new production.

Highly-recommended, but make sure you also check out (if you haven't already) the 1950 Original Broadway Cast (on the Decca Broadway label) and the 1992 Broadway revival (on the RCA label).
