Ultimate Shirley Horn
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
This 16-track compilation was put together by vocalist-pianist Diana Krall as part of Verve's Ultimate series, in which younger artists selected their favorite recordings by influential jazz masters. Krall's tasteful choices draw from Horn's 1980s and '90s releases I Thought About You, Close Enough for Love,You Won't Forget Me, Here's to Life, Light out of Darkness, and I Remember Miles. There are also two selections from her 1963 debut, Loads of Love/Shirley Horn with Horns. Horn's voice sounds lighter and clearer on these tracks, and the stock studio arrangements lack the sparse, fine-tuned phrasing of her trio. But the rudiments of her distinctive style were already in place when she made these early recordings. --Rick Mitchell

No original, no real ultimate : no 5 stars for once..........2007-02-25
Indeed, it is impossible to represent the "ultimate" Shirley Horn on one single compilation CD.
How can one NOT include her signature song "Here's to life"? Or "But beautiful"? Or "Forget me" (not a Verve recording, I guess). To name only a few!
"Do it again", "Get out of town", "Estate" and the final track are great choices though.
Still discovering Lady Horn album by album, I realize now that she is not just a one-style artist, as you could think in the beginning. She is very versatile, and left us a rich body of artistic work!
I guess her unforgettable, most sublime ballads renditions alone, don't fit on one record, let alone her swinging work. And then, there are the different arrangements and orchestrations, and the earliest work, which has its own pearls. Letting out the live work, is understandable, yet it is so important to represent this Master of atmosphere, since unfortunately we cannot hear her in real life anymore.
My first adviced albums: [Close enough for love], [Here's to life], [I love you, Paris] (live). Then, grown into Shirley Horn's universe, you'll want the rest too! ;-)
Deceptive Packaging.......2002-01-01
Verve's "Ultimate" reissues are based on two assumptions: 1. An artist's greatest performances are limited to those recorded for the Verve label; 2. The best judge of the featured artist's performances must necessarily be another, even more popular, performer. As a result of these highly dubious critieria, I've been disappointed in previous "Ultimate" collections, most notably the Bill Evans selections chosen from Verve's vaults by Herbie Hancock.
This selection of Shirley Horne material must necessarily come up short because it contains only a couple of the tracks from one of the most consistently stunning, aesthetically-satisfying vocal albums ever recorded: Horne/Mandel's "Here's to Life." Any collection that doesn't include the entirety of that album, with soul-stirring, miraculous performances of rare treasures such as "Return to Paradise" and "If You Love Me" (as moving as the Piaf original), is far from the "Ultimate Shirley Horne." Call this a dilution, an illustration, a partial representation--but don't abuse the English language with another unearned superlative.
four stars and a half...the best is yet to come.......2001-06-16
Shirley Horn is my dearest jazz singer... that's why I don't agree with Diana Krall's song selection (you know this CD is in the "ultimate" series, where artists choose other artists' work): to convey the idea of Shirley's music I would have picked more silky, soft, sexy tunes. Krall preferred more "jazzy" ones, perhaps more inspiring for her own style. But there IS a thrilling tune here by young Shirley, "Do it again". For me, more sexy than I can say in English. As a Horn fan and gourmet, I am always glad I got one more of her records. If you are a beginner, start from her most recent CD, "You're my thrill", and go backwards one-by-one...
5-Star but Not Recommended. Many ultimate renditions missing.......2001-01-15
Shirley Horn is not an artist for compilations. Please refer to the originals ... You will find all of them in each CD in the Amazon store. This is another Verve penny-hunter CD. Worst of all be aware that the same track Come a Little Closer is included in another compilation title in the store (Quiet Now). An absurd. Go direct to titles like `You Wont Foget Me` or `Here`s to Life` or `Close Enough for Love` or all titles in the store but not to those dishonest compilations. BTW, this is NOT the ultimate Shirley Horn.
