From the Label
The Satin Doll Trio remains, as one critic put it, "as smooth as honey on the ears" on their new release, A Cottage for Sale. As the jazz trio at the now famous Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City, they performed in the same lounge where Monica Lewinsky - alleged paramour of the president - was secretly recorded by Linda Tripp and photographed by investigators, and in the same hotel where sportscaster Marve Albert famously assaulted a Virginia woman. No strangers to the limelight, they can now be seen... read more

Album Description
The new Satin Doll album "A Cottage for Sale" features the music of Julie London. We recorded all of the songs in the original guitar/bass only style of the early Julie London trios; even though Julie herself actually recorded some of these songs with Big Bands. This unique sound can also be heard recordings from the period by artists such as; Sarah Vaughan on "After Hours" featuring Mundell Lowe (guitar) and George Duvivier (bass); Ella Fitzgerald on "Take Love Easy" featuring Joe Pass (guitar); Julie London on "Julie is Her Name" featuring Barney Kessel (guitar) and Ray Leatherwood (bass); also "Julie is Her Name Vol. II" featuring Howard Roberts (guitar) and Red Mitchell (bass).

5 out of 5 stars A perfect blend of voice and instruments, great jazz........1999-05-05

The satin voice of Patrice Ferris, imaginative rhythm section of guitarist, Ken Kilpatrick and bassist, Fred Ferris all blend to make a mellow sound and easy listening. The trio's choice of music made famous by Julie London reminds us of the never-ending possibilities of classic jazz. I never miss a chance to hear them when I am in DC and can't wait for their next CD.

1 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment.......2004-07-23

This is the worst CD I've ever purchased. Really awful. The vocalist cannot sing her way out of a bag, and the accompaniment is dull. Pass it up!

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC - DON'T WAIT ANOTHER MINUTE TO MAKE YOUR PURCHASE.......1999-10-24

Satin Doll Trio's music really moves me. I have not been this touched by a CD in a long time. This is a must purchase. Keep the music coming because you will always have me as a fan. Love you Patrice and Fred.

Wonderful music for the ears. Smooth and relaxing

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.......1999-05-07

It's a difficult job to to come up with fresh arrangements for an album of well known and often recorded Standards.. The Satin Doll Trio was able to do it on their CD, "A Cottage For Sale". Using only jazz guitar and acoustic bass behind the vocalist, Patrice Ferris, they produce a nice, smooth and easy going sound for these songs, all of which were recorded at some time by Julie London. Ms. Ferris' clear voice gives the listener a chance to hear each word, a must for songs where the lyric, and the story it tells, is really the heart of the work.

The liner notes state that the early Julie London recordings used instrumentation similar to that employed here by The Satin Doll Trio. I'm personally more familiar with the recordings Ms. London made with an orchestra, but enjoy the more free and open sound of the trio format.

I have to comment on the rendition of the title song, "A Cottage For Sale". Too often this very sad song is performed at a fast tempo, in almost a "swing" style. The Satin Doll Trio arrangement is slow, the way it's supposed to be, giving the listener a chance to think about the message the lyricist is presenting. My dad, Larry Conley, would have loved it, and he was the one who wrote the lyric!

I only found this CD by chance, while browsing the Amazon.com Web Page, but it certainly was a pleasant surprise. I think you'll enjoy it too!

This is a wonderful CD - especially "I'm in the mood for love." You get a big band feeling with only three performers. I hope they bring out a new CD soon.
