The Most Beautiful Recorded Tenor Voice?.......2005-06-22
Is any recorded, tenor, singing voice as lovely as Kenny Baker's? As a child, I often heard him during the 1930s on the Jack Benny show, but have scarcely thought of him since. Amazon.com offers him on four CDs: BABES IN TOYLAND, LOVE WALKED IN, THE STARLIT HOUR and WEILL FROM BERLIN TO BROADWAY. Over the years, I have heard the recorded voices of many tenors, mostly operatic. Their fine voices were excellently trained, often to a wider range and more difficult music. But note for note, their sound as recorded is not I think as sheerly beautiful as Kenny Baker's. A splendid, unspoiled, unstrained, natural gift, put to disciplined and tasteful use! His enunciation is remarkably clear, and his musical line, perfectly smooth. He makes each song a different story, as in the six pieces here from BABES IN TOYLAND.
My claim is easy to test. This website has CDs with excerpts for listening to the best tenors of the 20th century, including Enrico Caruso, John McCormack, Giovanni Martinelli, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, Richard Tauber, Richard Crooks, Jussi Bjoerling, Morton Downey, Mario Lanza, Giuseppe di Stefano, Nicolai Gedda, Jan Peerce, Leopold Simoneau, Fritz Wunderlich, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Of course, the earlier the career, the greater the damage to the recorded voice from primitive technology. Heard live, who knows which voice was most beautiful? But at least we have what earlier centuries could only imagine: lasting copies of live performances. Listen to Kenny Baker's voice on tracks 2 and 8 of BABES IN TOYLAND, and then compare.
The numbers from THE RED MILL will make you want to hear more. This operetta, also composed by Victor Herbert, was first produced in 1906, three years after BABES IN TOYLAND. "Moonbeams" (well sung by Eileen Farrell) is lovely; "Because You're You" (a duet between Farrell and Felix Knight) is quite simple but surprisingly affecting. The last two are the best: "Every Day Is Ladies' Day with Me," and "In Old New York." They are patter songs, perhaps inspired by, and surely as deft, as the ones that Gilbert and Sullivan were writing two decades earlier. Both are sung by Wilbur Evans, in a rich baritone, with perfect enunciation and marvelous comic flair. Great fun!
The selections on this CD were recorded in 1944 and 1945, then released in 1946 on both 78s and 10" LPs. For this CD, they were remastered from wartime lacquered-glass originals. Baker and Evans emerge in radiant form, surely much closer to live sound than reached our family radio via AM transmission 65 years ago. The orchestral and choral sound is less attractive. Poorly miked?
Very, very truncated........2002-12-09
The scores of Victor Herbert's "Babes in Toyland" and "The Red Mill" are lovely classics, but the incomplete scores represented by this Decca Broadway remastering of its antiquated 78s are not the best reprentation. My advice: wait for the John McGlinn "Babes in Toyland" to be released. As for "The Red Mill", you'd do better to pick up the Ohio Light Opera's double-CD from Albany Records.
incomplete pleasure.......2002-11-09
Two terrible mistakes keep this from 5 stars.. BABES IN TOYLAND is not complete as they are missing the delightful IN THE TOYMAKER'S WORKSHOP. Why? In THE RED MILL they use a butchered take of EVERY DAY IS LADIES DAY WITH ME. Again, why?
John McGlinn will be out with a complete BABES soon - and there is a lot of music in it - so you may want to wait.
Finally available on CD!.......2002-08-01
Decca's 1946 album of selections from Victor Herbert's celebrated musical was a welcome addition to record libraries, covering most of the major songs plus some of the delightful dance music. The album was reissued as a ten-inch Lp in 1949. A later reissue in 1957 dropped 4 songs to fit the score on one side of a twelve-inch Lp backed by six selections from Herbert's THE RED MILL. That pairing is reproduced here but the CD contains the complete BABES IN TOYLAND program! It's nice to have it back too! Nice of Decca to give us this early Christmas present this year. But BABES IN TOYLAND is a score that enchants all year round. How strange that no other complete recording exists.
The six selections form THE RED MILL offer a nice bonus, and the selections are well sung.

Mixed bag.......2006-12-21
By this point in his career he had two distinct music personalities: the soft & sappy and the blue & jazzy. His blue & jazzy numbers, particularly "I guess there ain't no Santa Claus" and his rendition of "Baby It's Cold Outside" are untouchable, 5-star classics. The other side, represented by "Christmas is for the children" is cringe-inducing.
Now it's 2006 and I have not heard his last Christmas outing, but I have one question. What the Holy Heck did he do to his face???????????

Soft Christmas Songs.......2006-11-25
This is a beautiful Christmas album. You are asking which of the 2 Barry Christmas albums you should buy? Now, you know I'm gonna say BOTH! I LOVE Barry music. The other (Christmas Love) album is more peppy. This one is the softer Christmas music that you might play later at night while you're waiting for Santa to come. These are just beautiful heart-melting versions of Christmas songs, many classics, and rearranged and tweeked by the Manilow master. The versions leave you feeling so very peaceful and full of those special feelings of the season.
Favorites, such as "The Christmas Song" (Chestnuts roasting by the open fire.. ..), "Silent Night," "The First Noel" and "White Christmas" are done so beautifully well by Barry. They are just awesome, in my opinion, as is the whole CD. (I keep almost typing the word "record." I guess I'm telling my age again.) There is something about "When the Meadow Was Bloomin'" that I can feel inside my heart. "For Unto Us a Child is Born/Because It's Christmas (For all the Children)," to me, is what the season is all about. My hat goes off to Barry for including it (if I wore a hat, that is.) "Baby, It's Cold Outside" is a cute duet with K.T. Oslin. Oh, I could just go on and on and on and on about these fantastic arrangements.
I had purchased this album earlier this year, listened to it a couple of times, and put it away. When I pulled it out the other day, I got hooked on its beauty all over again. It is not only Barry's singing, but a compilation of the vibration of his beautiful voice and the gorgeous accompanying musical arrangements. He really sings with his heart and it vibrates all the way through to his soul, and back out to his audience.
This CD would be great anytime, but ideal to sit with in front of a fireplace, at 11:30 p.m., on Christmas Eve, with a glass of wine and someone special--then listen into midnight and beyond--into Christmas Day.
And, once again, I am happy to see that an International Star is not afraid to sing the word "Christmas."
As a side note, I did so NOT want to do the NordicTrack last night, but I am on an exercise and diet "mission". So, I plopped this CD in, earphones on, closed my eyes, and walked into heaven. Before I realized it, the album ended and I did almost 45 minutes. Not only that, but I felt so peaceful; I could have taken on just about anything at that point. (Now I ask you, who feels peaceful after 45 minutes on an elliptical walker/bike without a seat?) Then I took a shower and slept like a baby with Barry's music playing in my heart all night long.
Buy this bee-yoo-tee-full CD. You won't be disappointed. Total running time is approximately 42 ½ minutes.
Record! Record! RECORD!!! There! I said it! Does anybody remember what a RECORD was? It was a round black disk that played music--in the old days--Like B.C.-- No, not a frisby!
My Favorite Christmas CD.......2005-12-15
I originally purchased this CD when it was first released in 1990. It was love at first listen and almost immediately become my favorite Christmas CD. It was always the first CD that I played when we decorated our Christmas tree. Imagine my dissapointment last week when I couldn't find it! After going to two stores last Saturday night ( neither had it!) I was lucky enough to find it on Sunday. Christmas was saved!!Great CD that I highly recommend!!
I play this CD EveryYear around this special time of the year.......2005-12-11
"Because its CHRISTmas" is probally my Favorite Christmas CD ever.My second Favorite is The Carpenters. This record is a concept album that never breaks, the music never stops, and its ALL GREAT,From "THe Christmas Song," to "Its just another New Years Eve." If you are now satisfied with this CD,I will buy it back from you.
All Time Favorite Christmas Album.......2005-11-28
This has been my favorite Christmas album for years. The entire album is fabulous -- not a bad song on it. I love the way the each song transitions into the next. The duet of Baby It's Cold Outside is the best version EVER. And the Messiah montage is beautiful. An outstanding effort.

Anyone who has seen--or even heard--Barry Manilow live should know what to expect from this Christmas release. True to his persona, some of the songs are as kitschy as a roving-eye cat clock: the Andrews Sisters-esque chorus of Manilow's spirited "Jingle Bells" may be a bit much for nonfans. The title track, however, is the singer at his Barry best, a touching, hold-your-honey-closer-type piano ballad that he really knows how to drive home. The standards are here too, including "The First Noel" and "Silent Night, Holy Night." But as his arrangement of "Jingle Bells" makes clear, there's never anything predictable with Barry Manilow, even when he's dealing with tradition. --Steve Gdula

I play this CD 35days a year,untill NewYearsEve.......2000-03-14
I thought no one could come close to the Carpenters Christmas album, but Barry does."The Christmas Song," who could sing this Mel Torme' classic different, but Barry gives a fantastic reading. "When the meadow was bloomin," what a wonderfull song writen to the words of Johnny Mercer."The Bells of Christmas," is great, along with the K.T.Oslin duet,"Baby its cold outside."But the best song on the CD is the last,"Its just another NewYearsEve." This record can make you cry,but fill good about the New Year coming. This Christmas CD is alot like the Carpenters, except most of the music is Barry's own material, and when you hear,"Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas," All the voices are Barry's. "Because its Christmas," was a top ten hit,and this album is always on the Christmas charts in Billboard every year. I know so many people who are Barry Manilow fans, but don't have this record. You don't know what your missing.
The Best of Barry.......1999-12-06
Even if you are not a Barry fan you will love this CD. Nothing get's you in the true spirit of the holidays more than this great collection of carrolls and ballads. It is one of my all time favorites. I now look forward to pulling out my holiday music and playing this first.
This CD is played for 30days after Thanksgiving.......1999-06-19
The greatest Christmas CD out. I thought no one could come close to the Carpenders Christmas Album, but Barry does." The Christmas Song." who could sing this Mel Torme classic different, but Barry gives a fantastic reading." When the Meadow was Bloomin'" ,what a great song writen to the words of Johnny Mercer."The Bells of Christmas" is my favorite. Then the CD ends with,"Its just another New Years Eve," What a song. One of the Best Christmas Albums Ever!.......1999-03-27
I usually have a problem with "celebrity" Christmas albums because they tend to just be a cash-in on the holiday, but this one is different. For one thing, it's closer to a jazz album than a pop album, and it sounds warm and cozy. Great songs, wonderful guests, and a great finale - Barry & 39 overdubs doing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" that mixes Barry, the Carpenters, and the Beach Boys into one song! One of the best Christmas albums of all time!

My hat goes off to Barry for including it (if I wore a hat, that is.) Christmas Album.......2003-05-09
Ahhh, yes!! I really love this Christmas album. The songs are simply great but of course, I have always loved the "Baby, It's Cold Outside" song especially when Barry does the duet with Debra Byrd. The first time I ever saw them do the duet for this song was from the A&E:"Live by Request" tv special and I remember how cute & funny they both were when singing this song. The cover picture for this album looks very romantic, christmasy, & the fireplace in the background makes me wanna cook some marshmallows & sip on some hot cocoa!
Merry Christmas!
Sit back & unwind.......2001-05-09
Manilow refuses to do the obvious Christmas album, but instead scales down and produces an album for those long winter nights that you cuddle up to the fire with. Christmas carols set the scene and fade towards Manilow's own compositions. Silent Night eases gently to the opening guitar riffs of the Manilow/Mercer song `I guess there ain't no Santo clause'. The Fist Noel into the achingly beautiful `When the meadow was blooming' and the Carol of the bells into the impeccably arranged `The Bells of Christmas'.
Theirs also a great duet with K.T. Oslin, the brilliant Frank Loesser song `Baby, its Cold Outside'. The Bing Crosby/Andrew Sisters inspired `Jingle Bells' performed with Expose, great harmonies. The uplifting `It's just another New Years Eve' and brilliant renditions of `White Christmas' and `The Christmas Song'.
SUPERB.
