Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good songs sung by a great singer at her best.......2002-11-03

Conversations In The Wind contains mostly songs composed by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent. I would rate this as an album with four star quality songs which is elevated to five stars by Petula Clark's superb vocals.

Petula Clark was at her very best displaying her flawless vocals and elegant interpretations. Her ability to shift from soft and subdued to intense and dramatic within a song is incredible. Pet smoothly and flawlessly changes keys and varies the dramatic intensity within a song. She had perhaps better control of her voice than any female pop singer. The Pet sound was unique. It had a pure, very light, and airy quality combined with an elegant and rich sound which no other female singer has ever surpassed.

People who like several of Petula Clark's songs will be surprised how much they will enjoy this album, while those who like only a couple of her American hits may not care for it.

Petula's vocals create a wide array of effects including romantic, soft, subdued, light, sad, tragic, serious, and happy. She is perhaps at her best in creating beautiful, eerie, haunting effects with her voice in songs such as Today, After You, and in many of the songs she recorded in the 1960's.

In my opinion, Petula sounds more sensual than any female pop singer of the past half century, which matches her soft vulnerable look. Jackie Trent's lyrics are beautiful and even the songs with ordinary melodies are elevated by Petula's superb vocals and impeccable interpretations.

My favorite tracks are the up-tempo 60's sounding, Support Your Nearest Love and Things To Do, in which Pet is at her most sensual. It is a great romantic song with a pure light sound in which Pet's voice sounds almost like a musical instrument. My other favorites are Things To Do, Conversations In The Wind, After You, Gotta Be Better Than This, and You And I.

Conversations In The Wind is a moving, haunting melody with superb vocals. Gotta Be Better Than This is magic of fan's of Petula and After You is a beautiful mid tempo song. You and I is an moving song with an intense, haunting effect. Pet is moving and dramatic in Close To You. Spring In September has an almost annoying, dated chorus, but the vocals are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Petula's album that went unreleased for 30 years.......2002-08-24

In 1969, Petula recorded an album with Tony Hatch that didn't get released at the time, and this CD is the first time that the album has been released as originally planned, albeit with bonus tracks. Most of the tracks had actually been released before - some had appeared on Today (in 1971), while others were released as part of the I love to sing 3-CD box.

Exactly why this album wasn't released is unclear, but it's great to be able to hear it now (and it's still available from Amazon[.co.uk] at the time of this review).

It seems that Tony Hatch had realised that Petula wanted something different, and had abandoned his Motown-esque sound in favor of a more easy listening sound, though still upbeat. If this was an attempt to keep Petula, it failed - Petula went on to record albums with various other producers, and never again recorded a complete album with Tony.

Tony wrote the song Goodbye Mr Chips, hoping it would be used in the movie, but the writer of the score (Leslie Bricusse) was never going to allow Tony's music to be used instead of his.

One of the bonus tracks, Look at mine, was a top twenty country hit for Petula, and a cover of it was also a country hit for Jody Miller.

Note that City lights and Close to you, like all the tracks here, are original songs, not to be confused with any other songs with the same title. This album contains no covers at all.

This is a very entertaining album, essential for Petula's fans, but also worth having if you like great, upbeat, easy listening music and don't mind if the songs are unfamiliar to begin with.
