Customer Reviews:
Forego the comparisons.......2007-06-26
A handsomely packaged, informative, well-documented and value-priced two-CD set comprising Haymes' major work for Capitol, viz. "Rain or Shine" and "Moon Dreams." I've always liked Haymes' singing, even been moved by his earlier version of "You'll Never Know." But this acquisition proved a double-edged sword. On the one hand, I wouldn't have purchased it were it not for the numerous hyperbolic claims on behalf of the singer's peerless artistry as demonstrated on the two albums collected here; on the other hand, the hype practically assured some anti-climax and disappointment.
Some of his champions compare his vocal quality to Nat Cole's or Johnny Hartman's. As rich as it is, it's not that velvety and luxuriant. Moreover, many present-day listeners will be put off by the tightly spinning vibrato that he employs (also true of Doris Day, who is admittedly a wonderful singer).
Others say that he's "at worst" the equal of Sinatra when it comes to interpreting ballads. I have to question if they've heard Sinatra's albums "In the Wee Small Hours," "No One Cares," "Only the Lonely," "Where Are You," "September of My Years," and "Close to You." Or even if they've juxtaposed the two singers' readings of songs primarily associated with Haymes--"It Might as Well Be Spring," "The More I See You."
But maybe it's best to approach each singer as sui generis and forego the comparisons. Sinatra was "driven" to build operatic breath reserves and to take risks--in the length of his phrases, the pushing of both extremes of his range, and his bold approach to phonetic elocution (no softening of consonants, vowels or diphthongs). Haymes views the ballad differently, is seeking a different effect, and employing a more conservative means to attain that effect. To his credit, he sings with warmth, intelligence, and unfaltering good taste.
One of the highlights of the disc is the inclusion of out-takes, giving the listener an insider's glimpse of recording in the '50s as well as some sense of Haymes' congenial personality.
Some of the best ballad singing ever recorded.......2007-02-16
These are widely considered to be the finest recorded performances by one of the premier baritone popular singers ever. It is a shame that Dick Haymes did not have the opportunity to follow these recordings with even more. The statement in the other review that Haymes voice was "ragged" is a little bizarre, because most anyone listening would describe these performances as (I hate to use the word) "smooth". These recordings have only been available on high priced alternative editions from Japan and a rare out-of-print English edition. But this edition adds as a bonus all of Haymes various singles for Capitol (never on CD before, and all very rare in any form). If you enjoy Haymes, Sinatra's closest competitor, please try out the many various CDs put out by the Dick Haymes society, all available through Amazon, of live radio performances, studio transcriptions and other things, all good quality discs that will be rare collectables someday. This 2 cd edition is very special. If you like Sinatra's ballad records of the 50's on Capitol, get this too!!
Fascinating addition.......2006-09-12
I think this collection is essential for Haymes's fans and probably worthwhile for anyone enjoying 'classic pop' vocals. These were recorded in the mid-50's and include two very fine albums, "Rain and Shine" and "Moondreams" as well as a few singles and a couple fascinating 'work in progress' outtakes. Those are of minor songs that he struggles with-- "Rainbow's End" and "My Love for Carmen' (an odd take off of the opera's "Habenera"). "Moondreams' esp. is a real gem IMO-- worthwhile on it's own. And if his voice is just a bit more ragged on "Rain and Shine" he still sings ballads so well. I also enjoyed the more 'upbeat' orchestrated songs by Gordon Jenkins, "Never Leave Me" and "New York's My Home." Many gems, including "How Deep is the Ocean," "Where or When," "What's New?", a slightly upbeat "Skylark' (interesting idea) and others. While his Decca work earlier may be more consistently wonderful, this is still great I think and so glad to see on CD finally.

Customer Reviews:
"Golden" Indeed!.......2006-05-08
Dick Haymes had one of the most mellow voices of the early bona fide crooners, and this collection is "golden" indeed! It is virtually a "complete" collection of his very best work. He was among the best crooners of an era that brought forth many, such as the early Sinatra and the great Buddy Clark. If you enjoy great baritones, rank Dick with the two named above, and such true crooners as Jack Jones, Matt Monro, Steve Lawrence, Perry Como, Don Cherry, and John Gary. For those of you who are too young to recall these super male singers, you have no idea what you are missing - like, real music.
Great Price, Great pressings.......2004-01-06
This Jasmine Music collection of Dick Haymes on 4 cds with over 100 tracks is a great price!
For collectors of Haymes some of the tracks are duplicated on other recordings but this is definitely worth the price.
Duets with Helen Forrest, Bing Crosby, the Andrew Sisters (I guess that counts as a quartet !) are all represented.
The pressings are clean and the sound is wonderful.
Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
This CD Blows.......2005-05-17
I have been a Dick Haymes fan for a few years now (since I was 10) and when I got this CD, I expected these 12 songs would be the original recordings. Instead, I get these trashy 1950s re-recordings and believe me, he sounds pretty worn out and lifeless. Haymes was probably at his best when he was singing with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey and throughout most of the 1940s. Probably the ONLY good song on this CD is "Love Walked In." And just as a side note, this CD features the original LP of "Come Rain Or Come Shine." Does he sound lifeless on this? Yes. Badly.
And so I wont be accused of plagiarism, this is the same person who wrote the March 26, 2005 paragraph. I am 15 now. I live in Milford, New Hampshire.
Could Have Been Better!.......2005-03-26
I have been a Dick Haymes fan for a few years now and when I got this CD, I expected these 12 songs would be the original recordings. Instead, I get these trashy 1950s re-recordings and believe me, he sounds pretty worn out and lifeless. Haymes was probably at his best when he was singing with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. Probably the ONLY good song on this CD is "Love Walked In." And just as a formality, this CD features the original LP or "Come Rain Or Come Shine" and he sounds pretty lifeless on that to.
This budget CD contains the origional LP "Rain Or Shine".......1999-09-25
One of Haymes best sessions (other then 1957's "Moondreams") he sings ballads in way that will simply knock you out, the best thing about this budget cd is that it contains all 12 songs from the classic capital 1955 LP "Rain Or Shine"(Capital T-713). Buy this one, I'm sure Mel Torme had this one in his music library.

Customer Reviews:
* DICK HAYMES' 1957 MASTERWORK *.......2006-02-28
This cd is a pinnacle from a decade full of pinnacles of the singers & standards variety. This is also a pinnacle of Dick Haymes' wildly erratic career. A Bing Crosby protégé in the greatest sense, Dick Haymes also followed the trail of Frank Sinatra, and incorporated the brilliant ideas of both artists into his own inimitable style. We are not likely to hear a singer with an instrument of such unabashed richness again.
Emotional vulnerability was not Dick Haymes forte, but in the mid 1950s he released two albums of great depth and artistry; "Rain Or Shine" (1955) and "Moondreams" (1957). Both are essential. "Rain Or Shine" is sometimes available as a Japanese import (ASIN: B00005USLF), or in the guise of a "best of" compilation, for very little cash (ASIN: B000000D1B). "Moondreams" is available only as this import, and is worth every cent. While "Rain Or Shine" deals with the quiet joy and intimacy of love, "Moondreams" deals with the whole of the affair, the love, the joy, the pain, and the heartbreak. While "Moondreams" is beautiful, it is also brutally honest, and faces the hard truths about romance and human nature in the most wrenching of terms. A brilliant and little-known masterpiece, "Moondreams" was once, for all intents and purposes, impossible to find. Perhaps due to the praise afforded it in Will Friedwald's book "Jazz Singing," the recording has surfaced on a cd (with great sound, by the way). This is not to say that "Moondreams" will always be here. This is one of those cds that is just destined to vanish, so anyone interested would be well advised to pick it up now, import price or not. The odds are very low that "Moondreams" will ever be released stateside.
Nonmusical factors interfered with Haymes ability to record more music in this vein, or even much more music in general, but nonetheless, through an active early career, and through these masterpieces of the 1950s, Dick Haymes has secured his legacy as one of THE greatest singers of jazz/pop standards of all time.
For a great look at Haymes' earlier career, check out the fantastic and inexpensive box set "Golden Years Of Dick Haymes" on Jasmine Records. Along with the two discs mentioned above, the listener will have a great representation of his best work.
Presence and personality!.......2005-05-07
The melodic, expressive and captivating voice of this notable crooner still remain through all these years. Dick owned that instantaneous landmark seal that one distinguishes immediately in a singer. Somehow he anticipated to Frankie with that moonlight charm so typical of those difficult years, during and after the WW2. An eloquent diction and musical phrasing that literally made of his voice another instrument by itself. The influence of Bing Crosby is obvious but who could escape from it? , but that is far to be a complaint but a reflection. Besides the huge presence of Jerome Kern and Cole Porter ran parallel to Vladimir Kosma and Mercer somehow is narrow bounded with Jacques Prevert on the other side of the ocean. Furthermore, if you take a look around about the candlelight songs in those ages such Laura, My funny Valentine, the very thought of you or When I fall in love, you feel the call of the Mother Earth in the sense to recover again the sense of the back to the intimate world made of affections, to try to forget as soon as possible the deep scares from the War years.
Go for this CD without any doubt!
