Doris Day: It's Magic - Her Early Years At Warner Bros. (Film Soundtrack Anthology) [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Not blessed with jazz chops, Doris Day is nonetheless an irresistible cute performer on these soundtrack cuts from her first three starring roles (Romance on the High Seas, My Dream Is Yours, and It's a Great Feeling). She's convincingly breathy on "I'll String Along with You" and sasses nicely on the King Cole Trio-like "Put 'Em in a Box." A guest shot with Bugs Bunny and Tweety on "Freddie, Get Ready" assures that this disc will never be dinner-party fodder, but it's hardly the strangest thing here. That honor goes to "Tic Tic Tic," an amiable little number that uses the Geiger counter as a metaphor for Day's love-struck heart. --Rickey Wright
People
If nothing else, this collection marks the moment when the insinuating, sexy performer of 1945's "Sentimental Journey" began to disappear.

whuttuhartifakt.......2006-07-20
I remember switching channels as a kid, trying to find something other than cowboy garbage or leaveittobeaverish suburban hymns and getting THIS blonde dudshell - the sightandsound of her is enough to put you back in prepubescency - I can't believe anybody, even Southern Baptists and Bush voters, would willingly listen to or look at this yellow painted-grin mannekin. "Jazz chops" the man says. This cloneofsomethingorother could NOT sing jazz. For that, try (Anita O')Day. WHERE do you think these Hollywood committemen got the idea for this apparition?
You're better off with American Idol. At least something could go "wrong".
great historical overview of Doris Day.......2006-02-28
I don't understand the slightly bitchy tone to the People and Amazon.com reviews of this cd. "Not blessed with jazz chops..." and "this collection marks the moment when the insinuating, sexy performer of 1945's 'Sentimental Journey' began to disappear". This cd is an overview of when Doris Day left big band singing and became a movie star and star singer for Columbia records. Some of the songs are mediocre, but that's not the fault of the singer. My favorite songs are the ones from the "Romance on the High Seas" soundtrack (1948, her first movie) where she definitely does show jazz chops.
When she sighs, a song begins..........2003-07-20
For many years, the only version of Doris Day's first movie hit "It's Magic" was only available in her slick, retooled version. Here you get not only the original, more raw version but a reprise as well. It's a must for Doris addicts who can't get enough of her sunny gumshun. All the movie-songs from "Romance on the High Seas", "My Dream Is Yours" and "It's A Great feeling" are here, and it's a treat listening to "Tic Tic Tic", "That Was a Big Fat Lie" "I'm In Love" and two versions of "It's You or No One" all in one sitting. Booklet is also fab, featuring lots of Dodo pics and movie memorabilia.
Touching Rendition.......2003-01-07
Whenever The Doris Day movie, "My Dream Is Yours" is playing on TV, I have to stop to watch it, just so I can see Doris sing one of my favorite songs. When she begins to sing "I'll String Along With You" to her little boy at bedtime, it gets to me everytime. (sniff-sniff) The only problem is, Jack Carson and Eve Arden's dialog, keeps getting in the way. Finally, I can hear Doris sing that song without interuption.
GREAT POP SINGING.......2001-02-16
If people remember Doris Day at all today, it is probably as a middle aged "virgin" in romantic comedies playing opposite leading men like Rock Hudson, James Garner or Cary Grant. But Day started her long, distinguished career as a big band singer and she was absolutely one of the best. It was as a singing ingenue that she first appeared on the screen and this CD proves her worth in 3 of her first movies: "Romance On The High Seas" in which she sang the Jule Styne/Sammy Cahn pop classic 'It's Magic', "My Dream Is Yours" which featured 'I'll String Along With You' (Warren & Dubin) and "It's A Great Feeling" (Styne and Cahn again) in which she sang songs like 'Blame My Absent-Minded Heart.' Almost all of the 17 numbers is issued for the first time and we can enjoy Day's mellow, sweet, pitch-perfect, charming voice in all of them. The sound, although taken directly from the soundtracks of 1948 and 1949, is quite good. This is great pop singing and worthwhile for anyone interested in Day or in those innocent Warner Brothers musical movies.
