Still loving this recording after all these years.......2004-11-01

I have been listening to this recording for several years now. It is one of the very few in my collection that I listen to repeatedly and still find interesting, insightful, and engaging. This recording is the only one I have found that has effectively reinterpreted his music in a new AND memorable way. While artfully paying honor to the beauty and playfulness of the melodic and chrodal tonalities that Hoady originally selected, Cory created a new and improved interpretation that is so good I now use it at the standard against which I compare all other Hoagy performances. The often subtle changes she makes in her stylings usually leave me wondering, "Why didn't Hoagy think of that?"

Hmm. Doesn't appear to be much middle ground in the reviews here. I go along with those who really like this recording.

Every artist brings their personal qualities to their work. A singer brings their talents to the task of making notes on paper come alive and reach out and touch the listener. Cory Jamison's clarity of voice and flashes of personality come through in her fresh presentation of Hoagy's great songs. The musicians do a marvelous job of playing the music. Music and voice compliment each other in this recording.

Altogether, a very welcome addition to recordings of Hoagy's wonderful songs. So, here's to Cory and Hoagy!

Classic, Charming and Sassy!.......2003-02-03

Hoagy wrote some amazing songs...but they don't do much without a great song interpreter/vocalist to really bring them to life and Cory does just that! If you need a good cry, then listen to "I Get Along Without You Very Well"...and read the story that goes with it...then proceed to the tissue box. But don't worry because there are plenty of happy great tunes on this CD as well...truly a great mix of Hoagy's stuff being crooned by a fantastic singer!

Nothing special/Dont waste your money.......2003-01-27

This CD was reccommended by a friend, so my expectations were rather high. What a disappointment. Miss Jamison is so typical of today's crop of singers - they try to sell on their looks.
It's not that she is awful...but she is nothing special or posseses no distinctive vocal quality or style that would set her apart from other singers. The reviewer that called this a masterpiece must be a friend. This is nothing near a masterpiece...want to hear a masterpiece go buy a CD by Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughn or Carmen McCrae. Those are great singers that have great arrangements to back them up. This CD doesn't come anywhere close except as an amatuer high school production. It's a wannabe but it can't.

This is an amazing singer doing great material with superb production values! What more do you want?

I've had the chance to see Cory in Chicago three times -- once at the Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention at the Park West and twice at Davenport's. She's great live, too!

When you think of classical music, Boston Pops and all-around-good listening...only one name rose above the rest ~ Arthur Fiedler! Not only did he have the best arrangements...but kept up with the times...everything from The Beatles, Gershwin, Henry Mancini, Carmichael, Stevie Wonder, Kern and Raksin...the list could go on...Fiedler brought classical into another dimension, before only the adults were the fans...with his imagination and personality...looked into the hearts of young Americans...and yes, you guessed it...won them over!

This CD is living proof...take a group of popular standards...Richard Hayman (arranger) and the rest will fall into place...Fiedler and the Pops give each tune life, exciting and beautiful melodies prevail...never before had such popularity with concerts and appearances, combining classical with tunes of today existed...but with the waving of his wan a new standard was born.

This recording is 1956 to 1974 performances...the entire 18 track selections are outstanding...leaving a rich legacy for all to enjoy now and years to come...this album is a rarity with you the music-lover in mind.

Excellent Ragtime recording.......2000-07-30

This is an excellent ragtime recording for those who have an interest in ragtime or are just staring to experience it. This recording is essential Berlin, performed by the New York Pops. From the start, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" will get your fingers snapping and will stick with you the rest of the day. The music is timeless and will become a classic in your CD collection.

If you have any interest in ragtime, this is an excellent recording for your collection. the 1st track, "Alexander's Ragtime Band," is especially catchy, timeless, and finger-snappingly good (ha!). The CD gets better as it goes along and the music is complemented nicely by the outstanding performance by the New York Pops. new to ragtime music? pick this disc up and enjoy.

A strange experience..........2003-11-03

They're both brilliant violinists but in very different genres, and Menuhin by his own admission never learned to improvise (unlike many of today's classical performers): he was trained in the post-Liszt, pre-jazz window when improvisation had died out in classical music and even cadenzas followed the score strictly (if Beethoven didn't write one, play Kreisler's). And it shows, rather painfully. He achieves a brilliant tone but that's about it: he plays these Broadway tunes completely "straight", and any student could do that equally well.

The CD is worthwhile for its curiosity value, but you'd get much better musical value buying Grappelli's jazz and Menuhin's classical recordings separately.

You simply can't go wrong with a combination of two of the most talented violinists of our time. This cd is a wonderful showcase for them both and the choice of music is the greatest classics. It's a fun, winner of a cd.
