Sarah Vaughn sounds mighty good here in the land of hi-fi, circa 1955-- a land where you'll find wonderful jazz musicians like Julian "Cannonball" Adderly on alto sax, J.J. Johnson on trombone, and Roy Haynes on drums, sitting in with the Ernie Wilson Orchestra. She gives brassy, Sassy-fied treatments to be-bop jazz standards such as "How High the Moon" and "Cherokee" (with the band doing double-time behind her), as well as pop standards like "Over the Rainbow" and the Gershwins' "Soon." Once you touch down in this land of hi-fi, you won't feel like leaving anytime soon. --Jim Emerson

One of my favorite disks. Not alot of vocals, great beats, great variety. Excellent "driving music." As another reviewer noted, I've also used this disk so much that it is now skipping. I'm definitely going to replace it!

I think this is a fantastic disc, and the variety is probably why I like it as much as I do. It is more upbeat than "after hours", so it plays nicely off of that title. I admit that of the series I like after hours the best, excellent for relaxed evening contemplations. I would recommend this disc to anyone looking for upbeat, fun music.

I am a Jazz fan who can appreciate laid back and groove oriented jazz such as John Scofield and also electronic music such as Future Sound of London. These tracks are somewhat simplistic by mainstream jazz standards, and probably not agreeable to hard core jazz enthusiasts. This music is not, however, nearly as simplistic as run of the mill techno or hip hop music whose influences are felt on many selections here. This music will challenge you if you have never appreciated Jazz and will be an addictive source of upbeat grooves if you do. One of the things that makes this album so excellent is its variety of tracks - i encourage the prospective buyer to listen to all of the availble clips. This one's a definite keeper.

This has a good mixture of house type music with Jazz phrasing and instruments. It is more techno than earlier stuff, emphasizing less vocals and more the beat. You could dance to most of the tunes, but they are fairly mellow; they dont bash your head open or bore you. I use this album as background music while I do boring repetitive work, to keep me engergized. I have used it so much that it now skips. Excellent bass lines and funky rhythms.

Well, despite the carpings of a couple of other reviewers below, if you love classic vocals, you'll dig this CD. No, Patti Page will never be mistaken for Billie or Ella, but that's not really the point. This record ranks up there with some of the best work of '50s pop singers like Doris Day and Keely Smith...and Patti's voice is truly a joy to listen to. A lost gem.

I've gone through 3 copies of the vinyl lp and the cd is in constant use. Can't believe these recordings sound so up to date. I can't think of better recordings of any of these songs and I have all kinds including Ella, Nat, Frank, Mel.

5 out of 5 stars PATTI'S BEST 50S LP NOW ON CD!.......2001-05-20

Patti was crooning in a sultry jazz style long before she made the Hit Parade with a string of million selling singles. She continued to sing Ellington, Porter and the rest even when the radio was blaring the TENNESSEE WALTZ, OLD CAPE COD and GENTLE ON MY MIND. When Pete Rugolo took Patti into the studio in 1956 and recorded this collection, he did the music world a favor. And he did Patti Page fans an even bigger favor. These arrangements and vocals are 46 years old!!!!!! They sound as up to date today as they did when recorded. A good recording will always stand the test of time. Every one of these songs seems to have been written for Patti. Whether it's a word packer such as the Rugolo arrangment of NEVERTHELESS or MOUNTAIN GREENERY or my favorite LOVE FOR SALE, these songs and these songwriters never had it so good. In fact these were so successful that Pete arranged two more jazz albums for Patti which were available as individual albums and as a double set (THE EAST SIDE/THE WEST SIDE). We in the states are not yet lucky enough to have those released on CD although they are available on a Japanese import.

If you are expecting an Ella or Sarah rendition of these songs, you will find them on other CDs. No one has or apparently ever will sing like Patti.

1 out of 5 stars Sincere effort, but no good results..........2000-10-26

I've seen Patti Page recently on PBS, where she and Margaret Whiting did a tribute to Johnny Mercer, Whiting was great(she's a pop singer that can easily make a succsessful crossover from pop-singer to jazz singer), Page on the other hand couldn't swing unfortionately if you hung her(her tribute ended up an insult to Mercer). It's not that this effort by Page wasn't sincere. In fact Pete Rugalo was assigned to make the arrangements for this album, Rugalo was jazz singer June Christy's favorite arranger. However Page is no Christy. The results are disasterous. The LP would have been better as an instrumental for Rugalo's innovative orchestra, and this lp would be listenable without Page's clumsy phrasing, and lack of sense of swing. Not to mention that she sounds as though she doesn't mean a word of anything she is ever singing(no feeling what so ever, though I wouldn't go as far as saying she's as bad as Barbara Streisand). Stay away from this if you like 50's jazz vocal, or respect jazz or swing in the least, go buy a June Christy CD instead. Also stay away from Teresa Brewer, and Joni James.

      MARCHES IN HI-FI is a re-release of a Fiedler "Living Stereo" recording. There are a variety of marches in the collection including classical marches, marches of John Philip Souza, and marches from big screen hits. Each piece is played to perfection by the Boston Pops Fiedler's legendary sound is evident throughout the album. Many of the titles are on the FIEDLER'S FAVORITE MARCHES collection, but this collection is worth the purchase for the tracks that are not in his other collection of marches. Some of the additional marches include "March of the Siamese Children' from THE KING AND I, "The March of the Charioteers" from BEN HUR, "Alla Marcia" from Sibeleus' KARELIA and "The War March of the Priests" of Mendelssohn.

      5 out of 5 stars One of the great jazz albums.......2006-01-20

      Sarah Vaughan was mucho happy with this album. The songs are terrific, the arrangements dynamic, the orchestra a blast, the recording quality first-rate and Mercury gave it all top-quality packaging. Upon release, it became a big hit and I got it when I was around 16 and it just bowled me over. It still sounds great. One day a C.D. will be released of the album plus its myriad alternate takes where Sarah over the same arrangements changes her vocal delivery drastically ("I'll Never Smile Again" emerges unique each time). Meanwhile, this is dynamic, accessible jazz at its best, with the top players in the game and Sassy in top form. Some of the songs are rarities and I was told the lyrics to "Cherokee" originated with this album (maybe, maybe not, but I was told it).
      Note on the cover how slim, how hip and how fashionable Sarah is and just damned cute.
      In her beginning days she was achingly homely, then she went into a too-glamorous phase, and later she became hefty. But here she is slim, hip, happy, glowing and really darling. She was always of a happy disposition, which made her a favorite to work with.
      She loved to chat and chatter in recording sessions and when she recorded her single "Please Mr. Brown" first did a parody in what I guess was meant to be a Bronx accent!
      Everything in this album bespeaks greatness, but intimate greatness. It's not a star turn but a great talent truly enjoying herself and offering her public the best.

      This is one of the greatest and most dealing recordings of Sarah, and Cannonball ever! If you're not hip to this one, don't pass it up. This one's swinging, and dealing hard. Period!

      If you like Sarah Vaughan, and you have not heard this album, you owe it to yourself to listen to it. It has an all star cast backing Sarah, including Cannonball Addereley, Roy Haynes and Jimmy Jones. Sarah's rendition of Over the Rainbow is one of the best ever. Along with Sarah Vaughan and Clifford Brown, and At Mister Kelly's, In the Land of Hi Fi is among my favorite Sarah Vaughn records.

      Sarah really swings on this album, with tremendous backing from the full-bodied Ernie Williams orchestra. As with her album "with Clifford Brown," this showcases Ms. Vaughan's dramatic swoops, bends, and incredible phrasing, but there are no unnecessary dramatics. Her voice is supple, very confident, and she evokes just the right emotions. Every song is a gem, even the shop-worn "Over the Rainbow" is given a fresh treatment, and the bop "Cherokee" (featuring the first female vocal ever recorded) features stunning work by Adderley.

      The band is fantastic and matches Ms. Vaughan's exuberance. There are excellent sax solos by Cannonball Adderley and Jerome Richardson, and personnel also include trombone greats J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding on trombone, Roy Haynes on drums, Jimmy Jones on piano and Ernie Royal on trumpet. Think an unrestrained Count Basie of his "Atomic album" era: This album will move you. The recording quality is excellent, both by today's standards and especially for a 1955 recording. One of the best of Ms. Vaughan's albums I've heard-get this one!

      At the age of 30 one would consider that my music choice is slighly out of sync with the rest of my fellow age group.This CD is such a happy,fun sing along compilation of songs by the finest voice i have ever heard and always reminds me of music on a Saturday morning when my Dad blasted the home with all his music,from Beatles through to Crosby Stills Nash and Young...somehow this Cd always stands out above the rest and brings back very fond memories and still gets my feet tapping to its infectious melodies and lyrics....Whover reads this,buy it and hopefully it does the same for you too....
