When people talk about today's great pianists, Ray Bryant's name must be included. This Philadelphia-born musician, the uncle of guitarist Kevin Eubanks, has played with everyone from Charlie Parker and Miles Davis to Carmen McRae. He plays with a deep, blues-based sensibility complemented by an uncanny melodic mind. Those attributes are in full effect on this newly unearthed 1993 concert from France. Bryant's powerful left hand pounds out rolling boogie woogie-like basslines on "In the Back Room," Billy Strayhorn's "Take the A Train," and John Lewis's "Django." His take on W.C. Handy's chestnut, "St. Louis Blues," recalls distant echoes of the early stride and gospel pianists, and the frisky melody of "Jungletown Jubilee" reincarnates the keyboard with the ghost of Art Tatum's swinging supernatural signature. Here's solid music from one piano player who has a long bright history in jazz and has earned a place in the jazz hall of fame. Although every piece is performed solo, Ray makes so much music pour like a river from his instrument that you forget he's sitting out there by himself. Listen in particular to Django. He's alive and brings his energy right to you. We're lucky this performance was preserved.

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that this must be among the top ten live jazz albums of all time.The music, the sound, the audience involvement - everything seems to be just about perfect. Ray Bryant's piano playing is a treasure...the way he drenches everything in just the right amount of blues and gospel...the sheer joy and exuberance he seems to radiate...it just can't be beat. The fact that the master tape for this wonderful cd was a cheap cassette given to Mr.Bryant by the gig's soundman as a souvenir makes you believe that there is, at times, justice in the world. This is healing music...for the body, for the soul.

The story is that this live performance was recorded on a $1.98 cassette by a fan. The sound is terrific and the solo playing by this almost forgotten jazz-great is at least worth that term. Some the blues go beyond terrific. Finally, it is hard to believe this is the first review on Amazon.

This 1993 recording is eerily reminiscent of Ray's 1977 Montreaux concert. Some of the same tunes, done in much the same manner, but there are a few here that aren't on "Montreaux" and vice-versa. For anyone who can't rest until they hear it all, check out the '77 recording - you'll hear some more real classic Ray. Now that I see "out of stock" underneath this CD, you may want to grab a hold of the "Montreaux Live '77" CD. It is every bit as good - it may be better...

If you want to hear exciting boogie type piano playing, this is it. Bryant writes and plays piano jazz in a way that tells us that jazz lives and is healthy. This man is brilliant.
If you buy this CD, play it, but do not like it, then man, you are dead and should be buried forthwith.

What fun! Ray rarely rocks-out like this, and it's fun to be there with him.

If you are new to Ray, this may not be the album for you - it'll only confuse you. But for long-time Ray afficianados, this is a special treat.

"In the Backroom" smokes like no solo piano should...rare Ray in high gear.

I love Ray Bryant, and I love this Album.
