Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great performer.......2007-04-03

Peggy Lee has a smooth, rich voice, and her sultry style pairs beautifully with the lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars if you like.......2007-03-21

Don't need to say much - I am not an audiophile but I love Peggy Lee so I am very pleased by this recording of many of my favorites. Can't really go wrong with this.

5 out of 5 stars Mellow and sultry.......2007-03-09

I remember hearing "Fever" on the radio as a child, and thinking "are they allowed to play stuff like that on the radio?". The seduction in her voice was alluring and mysterious, you could almost see steam in the air.

While singing "Waiting for the Train to Come In", her super-laid-back drawl lets you see a woman by the tracks at the train station, the words being sung are the thoughts going through the woman's head, waiting for her man to come home.

Although I prefer the Mills Brothers' rendition of "I Don't Know Enough About You", with their wonderful harmony, Peggy's version still stands on its own merit, and is a welcomed addition to the CD.

The majority of the tunes on this disc are a sampling of the popular songs during the 40's and 50's, almost a condensed time capsule. "Happiness is a Thing Called Joe" is her cover of a song from the all-Black movie musical "Cabin in the Sky" (1943), starring Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson as Little Joe.

And last, and definitely not least, "Is That All There Is". A masterpiece in matching words to supporting music. I bought this CD specifically for this song. I remember hearing it when it was released in 1969, and it stopped me in my tracks. Stunningly written and performed, especially when compared to the mindless "bubble gum" pop music of that period. Even to this day, it's a creepy and beautiful song, and in my opinion, her best.

5 out of 5 stars Peggy Lee's Greatest Hits.......2007-01-10

If you would like a CD that chronicles the greatest hits of Peggy Lee, this is it. THe sound is clear and great on all recordings. The songs are great, but some quite different than others, so it made me want (in some cases) the individual albums.

5 out of 5 stars What a voice!!!.......2006-10-23

I first heard her amazing voice when a radio station played "Fever". Although I didn't get the name of the singer at the time, the song and the sultry voice stuck with me. Months later when I was checking out the CDs at my local library, I came across a CD named "The best of Miss Peggy Lee" and the song "Fever" was listed on the cover. I took CD the home and that song turned out to be the same song I had fallen in love with months earlier. I soon enjoyed that wonderful voice again in many more lovely tunes.

In addition to the timeless "Fever", the CD contains more great songs including "I will be seeing you", which I find incredibly sad. We all have heard songs that put tears in our eyes. This song, as sung by Miss Peggy Lee, does that to me. Now when I hear her captivating voice on the radio, I know it's the voice of Peggy Lee and I smile happily.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Valuable historical perspective.......2004-01-25

This album contains most everything you need to know and hear about Peggy Lee. It's a worthy addition for your collection if you like Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Tierney Sutton, or Diane Schuur. All of these singers have their roots in and owe a debt of gratitude to Miss Lee, Frank Sinatra's favorite singer, as she was the pioneer of the cool, sultry, effortless sound. "All right, okay, you win" shows as well that she was respected by the instrumentalists she worked with. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sure To Be A Favorite In Your Collection.......2001-12-10

Although nothing short of a comprehensive box set can do full justice to Peggy Lee, this collection will be a welcome addition to any collection, for it includes a number of essential tracks as well several less often heard but equally impressive recordings.

In general, the collection focuses on recordings that have a distinctly bluesy undercurrent, such as "Why Don't You Do Right" and "Fever." At the same time, the collection also manages to find room for such light pop recordings as "Call Me," a killer live recording of "Well Alright, Okay, You Win," and a surprisingly effective cover of River's "Seventh Son."

Regardless of the specific track, Lee's vocals are superior on every recording and her interpretations--here ranging from the drop-dead restrait of "For Every Man There's a Woman" to the sassy "I'm A Woman"--are Peggy Lee at her finest, irreproachable throughout. Strongly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars PEG WITH CAPITOL THE SECOND TIME.......2001-07-02

Generally interesting best of recordings of PEGGY with CAPITOL.What is MISS LEE's greatest strenght is that she can take ordinary songs and transform them so it seems they are better when she sings them.FEVER is a perfect example;this song was also recorded by ELVIS in the early sixties. You should not be disapointed if you buy that record. However be warned,if you need one collection from PEGGY,you must buy the 1952-1956 DECCA collection which really shows her wide range better than this.Long time fans will enjoy this side of PEGGY LEE.

5 out of 5 stars Just Perfect.......1998-07-28

Peggy Lee's smooth, silky voice captures the essence of any song-be it ballads or swing. She sings from the heart and I could listen to her for hours.

4 out of 5 stars Senza Fine magnifica.......2007-02-27

Just saw the movie "Da Savoir", where the apropos finale song to that picture was Peggy Lee's "Senza Fine". Not only did that song punctuate the movie's ending, but her soulful, earthy, sultry and ever so understatedly gorgeous rendition of this song totally mesmerized me. The only problem with this version is that it doesn't go on forever, like the love mentioned in the song's lyrics. I have never been so touched by any of Peggy's vocal renditions as this one in particular. That is a heck of a statement for me to make, given her vast and glorious repertoire!

5 out of 5 stars Fever Hard to Bear.......2004-05-06

Life is so peculiar. My interest in Peggy Lee was sparked by Maria Muldaur's tribute CD "A Woman Alone With the Blues (Remembering Peggy Lee)." Then I found an old LP at a garage sale and wanted to hear more. This disc is an excellent snapshot of her work. The remastering makes the tracks clear with the only exception some distortion on her wonderful teaming with Louis Prima on "Yeah Yeah Yeah." That track is a great rocking jazzfest with the horns mostly clear throughout and Peggy's great, "I say drive he says yeah. I say park he says yeah. I say neck he says yeah. He says yeah yeah yeah yeah all the time!" Of course, the most famous of her songs is "Fever" with its throbbing bass and finger snap percussion. The 2003 remix that closes the CD that tries to update her sound wasn't particularly needed from my perspective, but the original burns with that fever that's so hard to bear. Another highlight for me is "Life is So Peculiar." It's got a great swing, "The ocean's only got water, you never know where you stand." The liner notes are very informative, telling us that this was recorded as a duet with Bing Crosby in her first film "Mr. Music" but was recorded by Peggy without Bing since he recorded for Decca and she for Capitol. Peggy penned "I Love Being Here with You" that swings with a vengeance, "I like a dance by Fred Astaire, & Brando's eyes, Yule Brenner's hair, but I think to tell you's only fair that I love being here with you." This is an excellent way to discover or remember Miss Peggy Lee! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Creme de Capitol.......2003-07-17

Culled from the amazing Singles box-set, this is a good package to pick up if you don't want to shell out for the box, or if you just want a nice selection of rare sides & hits by La Lee. The final cut is a dance remix of "Fever" for the club kids!

    5 out of 5 stars Superb Overview.......2003-07-11

A great selection of Peggy Lee's best. Spans some of her best fron the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the Decca Years.......2002-04-14

Some people believe that the Decca years were Peggy Lee's finest. Whatever one believes, it cannot be denied that during her time with Decca she made a number of very fine recordings many of which are featured on this CD. From her original rendition of "Lover" through to the almost whispered "Mr. Wonderful" she displays her own inimitable talents. Peggy does not have a powerful voice in the conventional sense of the word and perhaps that is part of the secret of her success. Her voice has a quality with somehow compels her audience to listen and to concentrate on her singing. Once you do that, she has got you - like a femme fatale she tightens her grip and any attempt at escape is futile. This CD encompasses the complete spectre of human emotions from elation to blues as in her rendition of "Black Coffee". From the less serious side of her nature as portrayed in two of her tunes from "Lady and the Tramp" to a more contemplative mood in such classics as "Where Can I Go Without You" and I would thoroughly recommend it to those who enjoy nostalgia, or those like myself, born after these recordings were made, who just enjoy good music. The recent death of Peggy Lee in January 2002 leaves an empty space which will never be filled for she was, in the tradition of all truly great performers, unique. We can, however, take some solace in the fact she left behind a plethora of recordings covering half a century and keep her memory alive for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Peggy Lee -- Ultimate Mink Jazz.......1999-11-13

This CD captures Peggy Lee at her most expressive. Containing many of her own compositions, including one great ditty with the Mills Bros., she tears out your guts right from the start. But this is no ordinary singer, this is Miss Peggy Lee. She makes you think you know where she's going, then-- BANG--you are taking ANOTHER magic ride! That's the mark of genius, and, of course, the mark of Miss Peggy Lee. This is a MUST HAVE!

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of Peggy's Decca years (1952-1957).......1999-11-10

This superb collection will introduce you to some of Peggy's best work on the Decca label. When Capitol Records wouldn't record her amazing rendition of "Lover" she signed with Decca. This CD opens with her smash-hit "Lover" and includes her unequaled reading of "Black Coffee." It also has seven songs written by Peggy! "Johnny Guitar" and "Where Can I Go Without You" are Peggy Lee (lyrics) and Victor Young (music) classics! Then there's her wicked "Sans Souci," watch out! Truly a five star CD. 5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......1999-11-04

Peggy Lee could sing the phone book & it'd be great..how I wish I were fortunate enough to have seen her perform live about 40 yrs. ago, I heard she gave the audience more than their money's worth, singing all her hit songs & more. Hers was one of the best voices in recorded music & I'm thankful Peggy has such a treasure trove of songs on both Decca & Capitol Records. This cd is an absolute must have if you're a true fan.

5 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore.......1998-08-07

This collection of Decca Hits by Peggy Lee is a must for any true fan of her music. Miss Lee was ahead of her time as she wrote quite a few of her hits (Johnny Guitar,Golden Earring,I Don't Know Enough About You,It's A Good Day and on and on)before it was common for women to do so. What an enormous talent! Makes you wish today's music sounded as good as this.

5 out of 5 stars The Decca years.......2005-03-29

For most of her career, Peggy recorded for Capitol but there was a five-year spell during which Peggy recorded for Decca because Peggy had a major disagreement with Capitol (over the song Lover, which Capitol didn't want her to record) and switched labels in 1952 although she switched back in 1957. Thus, this compilation focuses on Peggy's recordings between 1952 and 1956.

Peggy's career on Decca began with Lover, originally written as a waltz but re-arranged as a dramatic up-tempo song. Upon hearing it, composer Richard Rodgers expressed his displeasure at the arrangement. Nevertheless, it got Peggy's Decca career off to a great start, making the top three in the American charts.

Despite this start, Peggy's years on Decca were not very successful on the singles charts. Nevertheless, Peggy recorded a lot of great music during those years including the albums Black coffee, Pete Kelly's blues, Sea shells and Dream Street. The title track of her first Decca album (Black coffee, a melancholy ballad about loneliness) is now regarded as one of Peggy's most memorable recordings (hence its use as the title of this compilation) although it was never released as a single. It is yet another reminder that singles charts, however useful or interesting, do not tell the whole story.

You will surely recognize Love letters, which Peggy recorded several years before Ketty Lester made the song much more popular in the sixties. Peggy's version of this 1940's song is more intimately romantic than most other versions I've heard. Of course, it is just one of many classic covers that Peggy recorded for Decca and they are always among the best versions of those songs.

Apart from the songs already mentioned, this compilation contains many outstanding examples of Peggy's artistry. Many of the songs are ballads at which Peggy excels though there are several brilliant mid-tempo and up-tempo songs to prove Peggy's versatility.

While not the strongest compilation of Peggy's music for Decca, this budget compilation contains all the essential tracks from the period cover and will be enough for most people.

5 out of 5 stars The one to buy.......2005-12-28

I agree wholeheartedly with the previous reviewer--this really IS the best single-disc Peggy Lee collection. Not only does this disc represent Peggy Lee's best work from both the Capitol and Decca years--which you won't find on any of her other one-disc anthologies--but it also favors Lee's more timeless and enduring songs as opposed to the novelty hits.

      Peggy Lee was so cool.

      5 out of 5 stars Best single-CD collection of Peggy's music.......2002-12-16

Many compilations are titled best of or very best of, but this one really is. Most of the collection is made up of Peggy's recordings for Capitol, but EMI (who own Capitol) got permission from other companies to include Black coffee, He's a tramp and Siamese cat song.

The rest of the collection includes all the essentials including Fever, the novelty song Manana and The folks who live on the hill. I find Peggy's version of Big spender much more appealing than Shirley Bassey's more aggressive version of the song.

This collection demonstrates Peggy's versatility -upbeat swinging songs, slow, sexy songs, Disney songs, Latin-flavored songs and so much more. Of course, it is not possible to do full justice to Peggy's vast legacy in a single CD, but for anybody new to Peggy's music, this is the best one to buy - it's easily the strongest compilation I've come across. Actually, I already had a lot of Peggy's music when I bought this, but it's nice to be able to have so many great songs together, especially as I didn't have the two Disney tracks.

So, whether you are new to her music or (like me) a committed fan, this is sure to provide you with plenty of entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Peggy Lee "The Entertainer" Best Of........2007-05-13

I have thoroughly enjoyed the CD Audio & Video. It was more than I expected. I never knew she was a song writer. She did a supburb job of both. I;ll buy more of her CD's

      5 out of 5 stars I didn't know enough about you !!.......2005-11-08

I didn't know enough about Peggy.

But after listen to these songs and watched this precious DVD, I do now.

Pity is the songs in the CD are not the best or the most famous versions. Like "Why don't you do right" is not Benny Goodman's version, and "I don't know enough about you" is also not the same arrangment from the DVD version. They are Peggy's ex-husband and song writting partneer Dave Barbour's arrangement, good, but not the best.

Overall it is a wonderful and informative collective of Peggy Lee's music life. And it is a good price !

5 out of 5 stars The best introduction to Miss Peggy Lee!.......2005-09-18

The DVD contains exactly the same documentary as in "Fever: the Music of Peggy Lee", including the bonus material. So you'd better buy this one instead of the single DVD. The CD is a very good introduction to Miss Lee's music, with tracks from both her Capitol periods.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Peggy Lee DVD and CD Collection!!!.......2004-04-21

This is the Peggy Lee collection to purchase for those starting their adventure into one of the great singers of the past century!! From her beginning in the 1940's with the classic "I Don't Know Alot About You", it was clear that this lady possessed one of the magical voices of the century and it is shocking that she did not receive a Grammy until 1969's "Is That All There Is?"!!! The DVD in this collection is a winner and will make a fan for life of anyone who really appreciates the best in vocalists!! Peggy Lee will go on long after we are all gone as her talent is truly extraordinary!!! Enjoy!!!!
