The Contemporary Records Story [Box set]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
From its inception in 1951, Contemporary Records was an important independent jazz label, a West Coast equivalent to New York's Blue Note, Prestige, or Riverside. When its founder Lester Koenig was blacklisted in the film industry for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, he turned full-time to recording jazz. Koenig began chronicling the airy tones, relaxed swing, and often complex, clever arrangements favored by Shelly Manne, Lennie Niehaus, and other key figures of the burgeoning West Coast movement. The label achieved tremendous success with artists like the elegant pianist André Previn, with his sophisticated arrangements of Broadway show tunes, and the Poll Winners trio composed of guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Manne. But Contemporary also reflected the dual nature of the Los Angeles jazz scene, which contrasted the largely white "cool school" (often played by Hollywood studio musicians) with the edgy and forceful hard bop practiced by the city's perennially unsung black musicians. As the label's story unfolds here in recordings from 1952 to 1977, Koenig's vision is consistently impressive, whether he was recording a witty date by visiting East Coast icon Sonny Rollins or early sessions by avant-garde figures Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor. There are also superb mainstream dates by swing-era giants like Benny Carter, Red Norvo, and Ben Webster. Then there are the two figures who best connected all the points in the Contemporary world, pianist Hampton Hawes and alto saxophonist Art Pepper--both brilliant players who stretch throughout the label's active history and who reach musical heights that few artists ever achieve. This four-CD set provides a view of California jazz that's more multifaceted and far more richly expressive than is often recognized. --Stuart Broomer

Whether she has to put on a cowboy hat, kick it at the club, or cake on rock-chick quantities of black eyeliner, Kimberley Locke is going to see to it that you like her. Based on a True Story, the 2003 American Idol finalist's second CD, wanders through a dressing room of genres, wiggling into rock ("Trust Myself"), strutting around in R&B and dance ("Supawoman" and "Doin' It Tonite"), and unbuttoning contemporary country ("Fall"). Locke, an artist who otherwise exhibits a Queen Latifah-like gift for keeping it real, probably should have stuck to what fits best: pop (see the excellent first single "Changes"). That she doesn't--that she instead chooses to make an Idol-style show of her versatility--is a little bit of a letdown. But not much. Because she pumps personality and warmheartedness into every song, effectively if not ingeniously carrying off a boatload of styles, she'll still have a lock on a lot of mental lists of all-time-favorite female AI contestants, and deservedly. -Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Wearing her heart on her sleeve, Kimberley knows her fans will be able to relate to this album because music is the universal language. In her first attempts at songwriting, the product is a collection of songs highlighting the good and bad points of love and friendship. Taking calculated risks and exercising her faith has proven to be the key to unlocking the music that lives within Kimberley Locke.

Another great album.......2007-07-08
Another great album! This one has definitely grown on me...great voice and a nice variety of tunes. I just love her!
Based on a True REVIEW.......2007-06-28
Wow, great voice and songs. Amazing that she is not as hot as Kelly or Carrie.
Fairly Strong Sophomore Effort.......2007-06-26
One of the better singers to come out of the AMERICAN IDOL franchise, Kimberley Locke follows up 2004's ONE LOVE with a similar-sounding set of songs in BASED ON A TRUE STORY. As her previous set demonstrated, Locke is best served musically when wrapping her warm vocals around pop/rock arrangements--opening track "Change" is a wonderfullly adult rock ballad that never succumbs to sappy melodrama, while the country-tinged "Fall" and pop nugget "Any Which Way" showcase Locke's sublime vocal work. It's when trendy production creeps in that the album falters--official first single "Supawoman", justly ignored at radio, is abysmal, while "Doin It Tonite" sounds like a cheap Neptunes-produced knock-off. As a previous reviewer stated, it's a shame listeners(radio and otherwise) won't accept a black woman singing pop-rock music, which is probably why the album provides a little catering for the R&B audience. Nevertheless, if Locke had stuck to more songs along the lines of "Change" or "Fall", there would have been little, if anything, to fault about this set.
SUPERB!!!!.......2007-06-08
Kimberley Locke's second CD, "Based On A True Story," is perhaps the finest release to come from any former American Idol contestant to date. It is extremely good, with a nice variety of musical styles. Kimberley sings her heart out, and she has a simply wonderful vocal range. I loved her first release, yet this one is ten times better. I am a big fan of many American Idol alumni, including Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood... and I must say that Kimberley Locke outshines them all on this splendid release. Try it. It is well worth your money. GREAT CD!!!
This is not your typical American Idol Album!.......2007-06-02
First of all, I don't typically write reviews for albums, nor am I the typical AMerican Idol album buyer. However, if you are looking for a great album, with a great voice, great songs, and something to listen THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH, then buy this album.
If you like "8th world Wonder," you will love this album. Most songs are similar in sound as "8th," what I would call Adult Rock. Kimberly not only has a great voice, that is very powerful, she co-wrote most of the songs.
I can't pick a favorite, but I will give you a rundown of the tracks on this album:
1. Change - This is an amazing song, amazing voice. Most artists now when you listen to their vocals, there are several layers of their voice to make it stronger. She does not have that....her voice is that powerful.
2. Any Which way - Rock song with a great chorus and a soaring bridge at the end! It will get you going.
3. Trust Myself - again, another rock song. This one will have you believing in yourself. Again, awesome bridge at the end!
4. Supawoman - to be honest, when this song was released last year as a fast song, I didn't like it. However, this is a slowed down version and I have found myself addicted to it. Listen to the lyrics.
5. Doin' It tonight - a simple dance song. At first is seemed too simple, but I love her lower range in this song. You will start dancing when you hear it.
6. Friend Like You - DOn't be fooled by the title....this is not a happy song, however, she uses the Rock sound perfectly here. A great song.
7. Fall - This will bring tears to your eyes. Beautiful slow song with amazing, powerful vocals.
8. I don't wanna know - Again, the rock sound works so well for her. Good song.
9. Talk about us - this is more R&B than the rest of the album, but it is a nice change up.
10. You don't have to be strong - Blues song, very nicely done.
11. Everyday Angels - A feel good anthem! Nicely done
12. Band of Gold - WOW! She truly has a gift to make any song great!
This album is worth it. It's not like any other AI album. You will be listening to this album over and over. Let me know if you can pick just one favorite!

Pat Metheny's most ambitious solo project is also his most emotionally rich work as composer. A conceptual song cycle inspired by a tumultuous relationship frames the CD's alternately intense and introspective motifs with sweeping orchestrations and a shifting array of global musics spanning Asia, Europe, and the Americas. With a vast cast (including numerous Metheny Group members past and present), and Metheny himself marshalling percussion, horns, and keyboards as well as guitar and guitar synthesizer, Secret Story is by turns lush, heroic, heartbroken, at once epic and intimate. --Sam Sutherland

A worthwhile NEEDLE in the haystack if found.......2007-07-13
This is some of Pat Methany's best work especially "The Truth Will Always Be". It is very hard to find because it is out of print.
A "secret" that EVERYONE should know! .......2007-06-05
I first heard this on cassette, stuck in my greenhouse during a 40 minute rainstorm! Fortunately I had suitable refreshment with me. I stayed long after the rain!!! Just listen to "Always an Forever" and pay the entrance fee! Then experience the whole. This album wakens the dead! It is an artist at his absolute peak with musicians who are there because they love the experience. I have expended loads on PM since hearing this album. All worth it...but this album is just SO SO good. When I listen to Secret Story I can conjure up the best times in my life..and that is worth the trip. WOW...what a triumph.
Thanks Pat!
Re-release coming from Nonesuch.......2007-05-06
Don't muddle around trying to find a decent used, or overpriced new Geffen version of this cd. According to Pat's website, Nonesuch is working on a remastered version, as they did for Still Life (Talking) and Letter From Home.
Shopping center music.......2007-01-10
One of my friend recommanded to me this album, as an introduction to Pat Metheny's music. He said it was a masterpiece, it seems that we don't have the same taste for music. I am not telling that he is wrong or that I am right, I just want to say that for me, this album is a shopping center music, the kind you heard in a Wal Mart. I am a music lover, I can appreciate almost anything but not this, I didn't experience any feeling or emotion while listening to it. As always, almost every rating here comes from fans of the artist, well, I am not and this just make a good balance to the whole thing. Thanks for reading.
Awesome.......2006-11-15
This cd is awesome, Pat just shows all sides of Jazz and Fusion. The melodies and textures. Incredible guitar work etc. This is a "MUST HAVE" if you are a fan of Pats work

Product Description
Postmodern folk with a tinge of Americana. If you want to reduce it to an easily digestible phrase, that's what you might call the music of Kelly Flint. As the sultry voice for the trenchant songs of David Cantor in cult faves Dave's True Story, Kelly made five albums and was the toast of the New York Times, the Kennedy Center, and more. But now it's time for her to spread her solo wings, or more appropriately, to DRIVE ALL NIGHT. That's the title of Flint's first solo album, and what that album's about is the sum total of the places she has been. In the album's warm, organic arrangements, acoustic sonorities, and occasional open-road, real-America flavor, you can discern Flint's Midwestern youth, spent soaking up the classic folk-rockers of the '70s. In the more complex shapes that Flint's lyrics conjure in the mind's eye, and the subtle harmonic twists that keep DRIVE ALL NIGHT from becoming strictly an "Americana" album, her coming of age in New York City is apparent. Her involvement in the jazzy sophistication of Dave's True Story, her immersion in the complicated, urgent, shades-of-gray sensibility that is the experiential dividend of New York life it's all in this striking new batch of songs. Sometimes the trenchant bite is just under the surface, and sometimes it snaps up to nab a piece of your heart. Produced by Jeff Eyrich, bassist and producer for Dave's True Story, DRIVE ALL NIGHT doesn't leave Flint's previous musical life entirely behind; you can still hear the combination of hope and world-weariness, blue moods and gossamer balladry that helped make that group indie darlings. But this album adds another string to Flint's bow, and establishes her as a distinct musical entity, ultimately reliant on nothing but her own artistic road map.
Customer Reviews:
soon to be your favorite balladeer.......2007-05-09
I am jealous of all of you who have yet to discover Kelly Flint.
You will be amazed at her rich mellow delivery, her poetry, her can't-keep-still beat.
You will be moved, in more ways than one. Buy this.
Kelly! Kelly! Kelly! .......2007-03-08
What do you do when you are blessed with an angelic voice, a beautiful smile and know how to write a tune as well? If you're Kelly Flint, the voice of "Dave's True Story", you release a solo album. Combining an interesting mix of mostly folk-inspired originals, this album highlights yet another side of Kelly's talents. And this listener thinks that this is only the tip of the iceberg! Short and Sweet = Highly Recommended. BUY IT!
Solo Kelly is a lovely change from DTS.......2007-03-03
Dave's True Story vocalist Kelly Flint makes Dave Cantor's clever New York jazz one of music's great joys, so it was with great anticipation that I waited for Kelly's first solo release. The CD is clearly Kelly - and while it's the same Kelly, she's, well... different. The CD is not what I expected. But it's wonderful. Kelly isn't a cyncial NY'er here, rather, she's from America's heartland. She's no longer jazz, now she's folk. But, she's still beautiful to listen to. DTS is rich cabernet. Kelly is champagne. Buy this, light a fire, pour a glass and enjoy.

Recorded live at the Grand Ole Opry House in spring 2005, this double-disc set is in essence the companion to Wynonna's new autobiography, Coming Home to Myself, in that it canvasses her 20 years of recording, both as half of the Judds and on her own. While only the most rabid Judds fans will quibble about the absence of mother Naomi (other harmonizers take up the slack), some of the more important Judds hits (e.g., "Why Not Me") go missing in favor of obscure offerings or covers. As always in concert, Wynonna's impassioned vocals are so robust and powerful as to seem a force of nature (take cover, Three Little Pigs!), and she can imbue a sentimental song like Dave Loggins's "She Is His Only Need" with enough grit and gravity to make it dig deep down in the bones. Unfortunately, she infuses her between-song prattle with history lessons on her musical journey, which wear thin on repeated listenings, despite some deeply vulnerable confessions and good-natured humor. ("I'm trying to get back to my original weight: 8 pounds, 15 ounces.") She also fails to capture the frenetic randiness of Melissa Etheridge's "I'm the Only One," and though a serious student of Elvis, her excursions into Presleyana ("Burnin' Love," "Sometimes I Feel Like Elvis") seem more like parody than anything else. Worse, the bonus studio track, "Attitude," just sort of floats on by. On the upside, several songs rock harder and bluesier here than in their original versions, especially Mama Judd's blistering "That Was Yesterday," and "No One Else on Earth," which pushes its Bonnie Raitt-ish funk to the max. Bottom line: Mixed bag of material, but Wy's Ferrari of a voice will keep you glued to the speakers throughout. --Alanna Nash
Customer Reviews:
A must-hear!.......2007-05-20
The only problem I have had with this album is that I can't seem to stop listening to the first CD long enough to hear the second one, but I have no doubt the second half is as good as the first. All my old favorites are on here and it is so neat to hear her in concert and interacting with the fans. She is clearly a top notch performer. This is a must have for any Wynonna fan, and even if you are not yet a fan this will make you one!
A great compilation!.......2007-02-26
Very enjoyable CD. Great songs and stories by Wynonna. The 2nd CD is Wynonna singing many great songs by other artists.
Great stories, told through music.......2006-12-07
I always enjoy Wynonna's music, this Cd is wonderful to listen to, it tells her story through music which is enjoyable.
Gotta Love It.......2006-03-11
As an avid country music fan, this cd is now at the top of my list of cds to listen to at home and in the car.
Priceless.......2006-03-06
I believe that if you learn one from a book, it is worth what you paid for it. I have learned several things from this book. so to me, it is priceless.

If All our Days Were Music.......2004-05-04
I've been listening to this album in tandem with another favorite Liz story album 'Part of Fortune.' There are eight years between these albums and to me, at least, it seems that this dedicated pianist/composer has come full circle in that time period. Sometimes the same, but often the better for her explorations.
Still the same is Liz Story's light-handed style that roams the keyboard with a steady flow of notes. Sometimes letting the melody lead, and other times letting it break through the surface of the music almost porpoise-like, with the same wry smile.
Influenced by both Mozart and jazzman Bill Evans, she has developed a style that bridges the gap between chordal and arpeggiated harmonies that seems to be as much self-expression as it is music. One leaves a Story album with a sense of having met the performer and being happier for it.
Music varies from the humor of "Captain April" to the romantic of "Beginner's Mind." "Out of Time's" introspective shifts are balanced by the jazz-like tonalities of "The Promise." The concluding piece "Remember Me This Way" is a beautiful, tiny fragment - unforgettable, and perfect in it's way.
Thank you Liz. My children were born to this CD. :).......2004-01-22
There is something about the way that Captain April begins that is precisely right. Real April begins the same way. This cd is captivating from the very first note. As a whole, I would be hard pressed to say that I have ever listened to an entire CD that has been more compelling. That is quite a statement to make. I am so very glad that heaven has graced earth with Liz Story, and that she has graced us all with her music. Both her perceptiveness and ability are remarkable.
~Like water cascading over a rocky cliff~.......2002-02-09
I don't know why but beautiful music always reminds me of something and this CD reminds me of waterfalls splashing over rocks amongst misty meadows. It's got to be the piano and the way the melodies ebb and flow that just feels like the magic and serenity of rushing water. The music just seems to carry you away in a lovely enchanting dream.
Bedtime "Story".......2000-11-27
This is a nice CD to listen to while I'm reading to my almost-3-year-old son and getting him ready for bed. He likes it so much that he will often curl up next to the CD player and drift off to sleep while it's playing! My favorite song, depending on what kind of mood I'm in :) , is either "Captain April", "17 Seconds to Anywhere" or "Out of Time". The whole CD is just beautiful.
A great album !.......2000-11-25
I bought this a couple of years ago and it remains one of my most played albums . She has a wonderfully distinctive way of playing the piano and it has the effect of making you relax totally . Not an awfull lot more to say other than it requires a few listens to grow on you and thats always the sign of good music .

Customer Reviews:
Good but he's done better.......2005-08-25
I first heard Haddon's music thanks to the smooth ballad "Sinner's Prayer" and went in search of the CD, LOST AND FOUND, and loved it. Since then, I've begun to borrow some of his other music from the library to see if would hold its own against that disc. On this one, Haddon is using all live instrumentation (no keyboard or drum programming)and tends toward a more traditional gospel sound for the most part rather than the R&B flavour dominating LOST AND FOUND.
HIGHLIGHTS:
"The Potter" paraphrases the simple truth that we are unmolded clay in the hands of God...still waiting to be perfected. It has almost a 70s soul feel with its organ and popping bass. "Don't Let me Fall" uses wailing 80s rock guitar in the mix in a song that reminds me of a slow jam I can't quite place. "Rise and Be Healed" is probably the strongest tune here ("You may be a lame man and you can't even walk/Rise and be healed/You may be a dumb man and you can't even talk/Rise and be healed"), proclaiming God's desire to heal people both physically and emotionally. "Holy,Holy" uses a guest appearance by Dietrich's mom Dr. Joyce Haddon for some great call and response vocals (particularly when Dietrich sings "Mama you taught me how to love Him, but now I love Him for myself" and she answers back "Keep on loving Jesus, baby!". "Sweeter" is a simple anthem of encouragement ("Weepin' just endure for a night, it's gonna get better, better, better as the day go by..") "Outpour" is based around Acts 2:17-18, the verse explaining that God's Spirit will be felt even more as the world approaches its final days. ("We need an outpour of Your Spirit, Lord/Send it down, send it down...") It's a slow hymn that would feel right at home in Sunday services.
LOWS:
There aren't any really awful songs but I could really do without the "interview" cuts (5 of them) in between the songs, as well as the "Welcome You (Interlude)" and "Welcome You (Reprise)". These devices of using partial tunes to bookend an album has become almost a cliche and brings the album as a whole down.
BOTTOM LINE:
If you're new to Haddon I wouldn't start here..I'd go with LOST AND FOUND or CROSSROADS instead. But if you already are a fan of his, you'll probably want this.
anointed.......2000-11-04
This cd really blessed me.It's the first cd that I've heard that contains interviews with the artist. This cd has inspired me .when I was ready to give up he inspired me to go on.I pray that this cd will be a blessing to all who hear it.
KEEP ON PRAISIN' HIM DIETRICK!.......1999-11-20
All praises be to GOD and HIS perfect holiness! I love this CD. It has great ballads & bumps. This young man is truly anointed. I've also seen his "Chainbreaker" video. That is also a definite "must have" and so is this CD. GET IT! GET IT! GET IT!
A Wonderful testimony to God's Glory.......1999-11-11
This is such a delightful collection of praise to our Heavenly Father. Deitrick sings from his heart and wants to get across to us his love for the Lord. This is enjoyable to both young and old. I do believe he has made his mark. Keep praising the Lord and telling your story!
THIS CD WAS TERRIFIC !!!!.......1999-09-17
This cd was truly heart-warming. I especially love the song "Don't Let Me Fall". I like this song mainly because we all want the Lord to be with us at all times. But there are times when we feel as though we cannot make it. In those times, the Lord takes over and he holds us. He will not let us fall. The cd will have you on your feet praising God. This is a great gift for anyone whether or not they like gospel music. Detrick Haddon is a very inspirational young man. If you thought that Kirk Franklin had the place rocking, you should listen to this cd. Detrick Haddon is on top now !!!!!

Nice massage music. .......2007-06-09
I own a day spa and my therapists all enjoy this music. It is great for relaxation.
The Best of Ambient Music.......2005-10-22
This is the sort of rare CD that you can turn on, set "repeat CD" and not touch it for the day; or even for days! I have had this CD for many, many years... and it has never lost its appeal. PS: This is NOT "upbeat" jazzy ambient; but, mellow "calm you down" ambient. Each track is unique.
Lydia.......2005-05-21
Most of the tracks on this album are very good, but Lydia by Tim Story is special. It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music I have ever come across.
A tapestry of earth and music..........2002-09-06
This is a marvelously moving album to experience. While all the artists are different the album flows together very nicely. It moves along at its own pace, far far different than the pace of much of the everyday world in which we live. It is mellow and is not something you actively listen to although over time the melodies become quite clear and, oddly enough, captivating even exciting, though on a different level.
Play it in the background or play it in the car and suddenly an entirely different ambience is created. It's a beautiful work. I never tire of it and it embraces whatever mood I'm in and allows it to unfold in a rhythm all its own. You won't regret it a bit.
Path for yoga, for relaxation.......2000-10-16
As a Yoga instructor and artist I am constantly seaching for that special flow- that music that you consciously hear as you begin yoga or meditation, but has the ability to disappear into the recesses of your mind as your awareness attunes to a different level. Path invokes relaxation. It is fast enough to use in anything involving movement, yet not so fast you feel hurried in any way. I am not sure that it would be slow enough for pure meditation. Every musical creation on this CD is different, yet it flows seemlessly. I also bought YogaZone, Music for Yoga- it was good-a few shared artists- but nothing compared to Path. If you are looking for a complement to your yoga, or want some music to create a relaxed atomosphere this is it!

Pretty Good.......2007-07-08
Everything And More is a fairly good CD. There are no really poor songs. There are three that are quite good: 'Miracle', 'Everything And More', and 'More To This Life'.
Although it is reasonably good, there is nothing really exceptional on this CD. The lyrics are good. They contain a consistent Christian message.
My recommendation would be to try a couple of the aforementioned songs through ITunes or another music download service rather than buying a whole album.
Fantastic Voyage (side B).......2006-05-27
My 16 year old son turned to me two days ago and told me that since I like Kutless so much, I would probably like this other band called "Story Side B". He has always had awesome taste in music, so I pulled up RealPlayer and gave it a shot.
The first song I played was the one he loves the most (this week) "Breathe". Incredible piece. We played it twice. Then I played a few others. In two hours, I played three songs. Just three, over and over and over. From the Styx-reminiscent "Off the Ground" to the moving sincerity of "Dance To Me". There are so many influences I can hear in the vocals and melodies, but I hesitate to name them because the end result stands so totally on it's own.
The messages are simple. Trust. Have faith. Find good people. God loves us. And "You Are Not Alone".
In every track, one can't help but be assured that these guys truly love what they do and had a blast writing and recording this debut album.
This writer eagerly awaits not only the next offering, but that Story Side B will put together a MySpace web page, to further share their awesome gifts with all the music lovers there.
One of the Best Albums EVER!.......2006-05-16
Hey Joey Thompson (three reviews below), don't forget that Toby Mac (aka Toby mcKeehan) pretty much owns the record label that Story Side B is on, and signed the band. However, this does not matter when it comes to the true talent of this band and the artistic quality of the album. In my opinion, this is the best "positive rock" album ever! Yep...I said it!
I personally know most of the band and I can say that each of these guys are musical geniuses. Between Lou (who also lead the awesome band "Monkey the Fish"), Matt, Ron, Jordan, and Lil' Preston Pohl, these guys have created an album that can withstand time. Each song is perfectly crafted. There is NO filler on this album. These guys are definitely a band to watch. I predict that they will become HUGE and even have some cross-over success to the main-stream music audience. Plus, they are some of the most down-to-earth guys you will ever meet. No matter how long they have been touring or how tired they may be, they are always approachable by fans and they always greet them with a smile, handshake, and usually a hug.
You can't go wrong with buying this C.D. I'm so confident that you'll like this C.D...I'll guarantee that if you don't, I'm sure someone else will want to buy it from you!
Everything and More!.......2006-05-11
This is Christian Music at it's most awesome level. It is amazing
that 5 of the most talented young men have blended their gifts, diversity of backgrounds and skills together for a common goal of reaching the young at heart with a powerful message through music. This CD is a MUST BUY!! I can't hardly wait for the next project. If you have the chance to catch one of their shows.....Run / don't walk; you'll be glad you did.
Amazing CD.......2006-03-17
I have followed them from the beginning and I have loved everything these guys have put out. Highly recommended!

Deana Carter's multiplatinum 1996 debut, Did I Shave My Legs for This?, established the Nashville native as a winsome risk-taker: the Matraca Berg/Gary Harrison-penned hit "Strawberry Wine" positioned Carter as a maker of Southern--though not strictly country--music, and dared to put steamy sensuality back into the threadbare theme of lost innocence. Nine years later, she's still crossing the line and watching love slip through her fingers, though perhaps not as memorably as before. The Story of My Life, her first record for an independent label, is a full Carter showcase--she wrote, produced, and played on all eleven cuts. That's both the album's strength and its weakness. Carter starts out like a house afire with "The Girl You Left Me For," a declaration of desire ("I want your perfume on my pillowcase... I want to feel you on my fingertips") wrapped in a blanket of smart, sexy pop. But as the relationship sours in subsequent songs, Carter loses her producer's chops, even as the melodies linger. She's always been a fan of '70s pop, but inserting a Beatlesque break in the middle of "She's Good for You" is both jarring and precious, especially since other offerings, like the wistful "Not Another Love Song," seem underproduced. While Carter would do well next time to bring in a more seasoned partner behind the board, there's no denying her winsome charm as a Southern girl who has no qualms about going all the way. --Alanna Nash

+1/2 -- Former country star records album her way.......2007-01-28
Carter's always seemed like an unlikely maverick, but despite a career that's been heavily buffeted by the expectations of two major labels, she's emerged with her own musical vision intact. Her multi-platinum 1996 debut CD ("Did I Shave My Legs For This?") and it's dominating trio of #1 hits marked a level of commercial success that she has neither matched, nor seemed to have sought. Her 1998 sophomore release for Capitol ("Everything's Gonna Be Alright") indulged her love of '70s pop and rock and only managed to launch a couple of tepid top-40 singles. A switch to Arista Nashville four years later found her co-producing polished adult pop with Dan Huff. The results were fetching, but again had only middling success on the charts.
Fast forward another three years. Carter's relocated to Los Angeles from Nashville (the latter, unusually for a country singer, her birthplace), she's divorced from the husband who inspired much of her debut CD's ebullience, and amidst a new relationship, and just before entering the studio she finds out that she's pregnant. That's a lot of life material from which to draw, and recording for Vanguard - known more for its classic folk releases of the '60s than its occasional country releases - she's given the freedom to write and produce the album of her dreams. Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising, but the result integrates elements of all her previous releases, suggesting that while she didn't have complete control in earlier sessions, she certainly had her say. She essays her artistic fortitude in the song "Sunny Day."
Though recorded on the West Coast, Carter has clearly brought her roots with her. This sounds at least as earthy as the works she recorded in Nashville, and though she may have felt suffocated by Music City's "way of doing things," she clearly isn't in California to repudiate her country heritage. Many of these tracks would fit easily into what currently compromises country radio, but there's no crying steel or fiddle here - this is contemporary adult music, but without the glossy pop highlights of her previous outings.
Her arrangements follow the material, often starting slow and building drama with a kick of electric guitars, but the production never overshadows her words. The catchy "yeah yeah yeah" backing vocal of the album's opener is a neat hook upon which Carter hangs her distraught plea for a lost lover. Even better, the broken-hearted roadtrip ballad "Atlanta & Birmingham" opens with acoustic guitar and piano that reflect the inner-voice of the lyric's letter-to-a-lost lover. The middle part picks up as the writer herself picks up the pieces and prepares to move on, and the end settles back down as the singer gains an outside perspective.
Carter's early association with Matraca Berg (whose autobiographical "Strawberry Wine" became Carter's most recognizable hit) seems to have made an impression. Carter's songs don't have the literary edge of Berg's, but they have the same sort of keen phrases that nail a character in only a few words, and her melodies are memorably fleshed out by her own inventive production touches. Carter was clearly letting go of a relationship during the writing of this album, but her tone is more wistful than bitter, and the music follows suit.
Each of Carter's albums has its charms, but this one feels closer to the artist than any that came before. Vanguard hasn't exactly burned up the contemporary pop charts with their marketing prowess, so it's anyone's guess if they can launch this album in the contemporary pop market. Carter's touching and mature music fits nicely onto a label roster that includes Joan Osborne and Edward McCain, so perhaps the critical mass will help define her outside of Nashville circles. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. Not the Deanna Carter I know and love.......2006-02-19
I only like two songs on this album, this album is just not Deana Carter, i miss her original stuff. I don't ever listen to this CD either. It sits collecting dust. But you be the judge.
A CD you MUST own (even if you don't like country)!.......2006-01-23
First of all, let me say that this is my first Deana Carter CD. I hadn't heard of her until I read a glowing review of this CD in a magazine. A few weeks later, I was at my local library and saw the CD on display, and remembering that review, I checked it out. I listened to it, and I liked what heard so much that I had to play it again after I had listened to the whole CD for the first time. You see, I don't usually do that, especially with a country CD. Then, I didn't like country all that much, like I do now. I loved it so much, I ended up buying it!
So now that I have told you how I discovered this CD, let's move on to the review. This is a CD that you can listen to all the way through, and you can tell from the title that she put her heart and soul into each song. She wrote or cowrote each song, and the album was recorded while she was pregnant. So, for Deana, this albuim was a labor of love, in more ways than one. It will grab you from the first song, "The Girl You Left Me For" which sounds like a lost track from an Avril Lavigne CD (and you'll have to check the cover to make sure it's Deana). There are several songs about relationships, including "Not Another Love Song", and songs about extraordinary women, like "Katie". As soon as the last song, the autobiographical "The Story of My Life", ends, you'll probably be like me the first time I heard this, and want to listen to the whole CD over again!
Deana's finest hour.......2005-07-06
If you were to ask me several years ago that Kurt Cobain would be referenced in a country music song I would probably say you were crazy. But after listening to Deana Carter's new single, One Day At A Time, the indication was only fitting in its allusion to childhood memories.
In many ways it seems that Deana Carter has already driven past several country music limits and is now on a lengthy road to find her own artistic independence with her music. During the past several years now, Carter has pretty much left behind the Music Row system that not only fostered the breakout success of her 1996 smash, Strawberry Wine, but also fled to Los Angeles where she signed with a somewhat independent label, Vanguard Records in hopes to take full control over her musical direction.
With her new release, The Story Of My Life, already gaining a lot of recognition from her peers. This might just be her most personal album to date. It is an artistic statement that will most likely stand out as one of the greatest country albums of the year.
The album is a pretty private escape then the monster production that can usually plague an album from survival. The simple folk songs and quiet harmonies that this record gives out will only lead you to a gentle truth that resounds in all our lives.
These songs are heartfelt and sincerely autobiographical. The title of this record pretty much says it all. This album is Deana Carter's life put into the rhythms of her own music. From her hippie upbringing to her fellowships with childhood friends, Carter is ingenious at how well she illustrates her musical paintings and captures her own truth about growing up.
She distributes her sorrows and despair with her bellyache opening track, The Girl You Left Me For. It continues to flow from track to track. Her still water folk styling is sampled on the luscious track, Katie. A genuine little story about a liberated girl who enters the world of self-expression. The most noteworthy track on this album in my opinion is, Sunny Day. Its autobiographical references only helps me better understand the importance of being true to yourself.
Deana Carter's unapologetic approach towards this record blows my mind away every time I listen to this album. The Story Of My Life, is an album that seems to capture the beauty of love, grace, compassion, regret, hope and desire. It's something that not to many other albums will attempt to explore. She might had just made the record of her career with this one. This album's splendor will definitely shine on for many years to come.
Story of her life.......2005-05-20
I've been a fan of Deana Carter since her debut in 1996. With every album she's released since that one, I think as listeners we get a glipse more and more of the kind of artist she is. Her second album in 1998 was much more acoustic and less radio friendly, but still a marvelous album. Her third album in 2003 was a nice country album but didn't do too well either. On this new album she's embraced a more alt-country sound, which I like, but it doesn't all click for me. There's some decent songs, others don't work for me based on the lyrical structure. Still it's a decent album, more for her fans, I don't think it will broaden her fanbase much but at least she's doing what she wants to.
