Diamonds Are Forever - And Shirley's One Hell of a Diamond!.......2006-12-14
There are somethings that will always be cool and Shirley Bassey is one of them!
This CD takes some of her classics and spins them in an amazing, inventive and new direction! Yes, it's different from the orginal songs - but what made it so different back then is recaptured by the talented djs who spun Ms. Bassey's honey voice into the sounds of cool!
Worth a listen - and a dance!
Oh YES !!!!!!! .......2006-05-06
About 12 years ago, Shirley Bassey arrived in Beirut for a concert .. I was 12 years old .. my mom was very excited about this .. I was clueless ..!! She took me along 'cuz she's the one who fed me my musical knowledge since I was a kid .. and I fell in love with that woman's voice and personality .. on stage - she was a white angel !!..
A couple of years later I rented 007's Goldfinger .. and when the theme music started I was wide-eyed!! That's her..
I have listened to her music a lot since that day .. there was even a famous DEWAR'S WHITE LABEL Ad with featured the song "Never Never Never" ..
And today, when I found this Remix album, my eyes went wide again!!!.. Groove Armada Remix !??!!! You gotta be kidding me!!! I loved every minute of this album ..!!! Highly recommended to everybody from any age ~_~
If You Like Shirley, You WIll Surely Like This.......2005-08-26
Her old tunes, with new dance-able backbeats.
Great party/club/dance music.
My SO is a huge fan of hers. I am less so, but the new versions of the songs are easier on my ears and more fun to listen to in the background.
Shirley up to date..........2005-01-29
I was ridiculed by my friends for buying this CD, until I made them listen to it. I have always loved Shirley Bassey, along with many other rock/soul/blues and jazz singers. This album takes the great works of Shirleys and brings them into a format for a newer generation to love and still wonderful for the people who loved the original works. As always Shirleys vocals are beautiful and the music it has been put to makes it a whole new experience. I reccomend this album to ANYONE who likes music.
Over looked Singers .......2004-10-22
I'm 35 and I remember when was a kid and my mother would play Shirley Bassey records and other 60's singers! I remember the power and the majesty that is her voice and this woman can belt it out. She is probably one of the most forgotten or should I say most over looked Singers of the 60's and 70's!
So I was looking through my Mothers old LP's that my father had kept after her death and I saw the Moonraker soundtrack and I was compelled to pick it up on CD so I made a trip to my local record store but no luck! So I put a search of the music on I-tunes and I found this compilation so I down loaded it!
This music makes me feel like a kid again when my mom played her records. This compilation does not get old and it has re-sparked my interest in Shirley Bassey. I must agree with most if not all the posts here this compilation is worth getting.
I did not realize that the Propeller heads made a re mix of one of her songs on there first CD. I am now a fan of remixed music. I was for the logiest time a purest on not remixing music but this CD has made me change my mind. The remixes on this CD have given this music and Artist new life: it's like opening an attic and airing it out and rearranging the boxes. I am utterly impressed with this CD.
By far "Spinning Wheel" is my favorite song but "If you go away" is assume! I am now on the hunt for remixed CD's of this caliber. If you are a fan on funk, soul, electronica and women who can belt it out this is the CD for you. If you are a purist don't bother but then again it could change the way you see the remix art form!

One of the best remix/tribute albums I've ever heard..........2002-07-22
When I first saw this CD, I thought:
"No way is this gonna work!"
How wrong I was!! :)
This album has to be heard to be believed. The various remixers
have worked wonders with the originals and have really funked up
the tunes for a "modern" audience without in any way ruining
them. I'm amazed at how good they are, having heard many
similar attempts at remixing classic songs, this stands head
and shoulders above the rest.
My favourite track on the album is "Big Spender (Wild Oscar
Mix)" - which has a fantastic Prodigy/"Firestarter"-style beat
and features some mad Fat-Boy-Slim/"Rockafeller Skank" effects!
I think it would have made a brilliant single.
Mantronik's "Diamonds Are Forever" is also nuts(!), but it
still works! I like that track a lot, too.
The same goes for DJ Spinna's "Spinning Wheel"...
The Propellerheads' remix of "Goldfinger" is also great.
Kenny Dope's remix of "Light My Fire" is very chillable...
"If You Go Away" is the only "techno" track on the album.
It's a bit of a downer but in a good way(!). Very trancey and
atmospheric.
All of the tracks are great, to be honest.
Forget what any purists might say about it, this album is
awesome and a great tribute to Shirley. I'm sure Ms. Bassey
would be proud... :)
One more thing: This version of the album has a far better
cover than the US version (in my opinion). The US version
doesn't have Shirley on the cover(?!?!)...
Novelty value,but dosent work........2001-03-25
She has the ability to lead any music, be it classical, pop, whatever, but it has to be admitted that she was born to sing with an orchestra the bigger the better.
The Magic Is Still There...........2001-01-28
I have eagerly been anticipating this CD ever since I firstread about it. For the most part, it's quite wonderful. I should notbe surpised at how fresh and vibrant Ms. Bassey's voice sounds, eventhrough all the overdubbed and sampled backing. The reworkings of"Where do I Begin?", "Diamonds Are Forever","Easy Thing to Do", "Never, Never, Never","Big Spender" & "If You Go Away" are simplywonderful. The only ones that are a slight let-down are both remixesof "Light My Fire", while "Goldfinger" borders on,but stays just shy of being too over the top. I wish that "NoRegrets" and "I Who Have Nothing" would have beenincluded instead of these two versions of "Light My Fire."Either way, it's a must for the Bassey fan and the chic as well.

As far as remix albums..........2000-12-21
At first glance one would associate remix and Shirey Bassey with the hypertension of the clubfloor. Both lend a certain drama to one another and therefore seem fitting. With the exception of the last track ("If You Go Away") nothing here gets the club diva treatment. And Thank You to the remixers, since that would have been a waste of the warmth and depth of Shirley Bassey's emotive voice. If you're familiar with the music of Fatboy Slim and The Chemical Brothers you'll feel right at home here, exactly as these songs do in their very respectful Big Beat reinterpretations (all the best and most important elements of each song are retained and enhanced). I must say that as far as remix albums are concerned, this one is an example of how a reconstruction of a song can add lustre to an original track rather than technological tarnish. All ten tracks included here sound as if the song had hand-picked its remix as nothing here sounds garish or out of context. The effects used in "Never Never Never" and "Big Spender", for example, enhance the former's atmosphere and the ladder's plucky attitude. The same is true for every track here, including the lone club mix, which adds an icey quality to the sadness of the lyric. Another issue that is addressed with great satisfaction on this release is the timing of each track. Nothing here is an awkwardly truncated version that would have been better represented in a complete form, nor is anything too lengthy while a remixer admires his own ability to maneuver studio gimmeckry. So yes, I do recommend this album. New fans will be refreshed with quality work informing quality original material, while faithfuls will be delighted by the new moods and playfullness of classic Shirley Bassey. Or vice versa.

60's Pace 007 and 001.......2001-08-13
Couldn't disagree more with people who are pious about the originals: they've recruited top producers and dj's to remix these classics, and in most instances, the results are bracingly original without doing any kind of disservice to the originals (blah blah blah). It's fun, it's innovative, and in some cases, some of the best club/dance/disco/elctronica I've heard anywhere in a long time. The Bond remixes are chilling, actually sent chills up my spine. In fact, for the next Bond movie, they would do well to get Bassey on board again and do something in this spirit. Kickin' beats and the Bassey voice. The electronic flourishes are not just blandly laid down computer beats but enhance Bassey's baritone-esque voice. I suppose it helps if you're gay or old enough to remember the originals, but don't let that stop you from spinning this head-turning disc at you next party or lounge fest.
Bassey and the Bass.......2000-10-27
This is a great album. Very few of the remixes are actually innovative or inventive. Most of the reworkings are very skillfully executed however, and they make for a fabuluous Shirley Bassey album which is contemporary and fun to listen to. The most outstanding track is Big Spender, mixed by Wild Oscar. I would have liked to have heard one or two tracks with a more ambient Mark Bell/Bjork feel.
a perfect combination.......2000-10-02
I would never have figured I'd enjoy a Shirley Bassey cd so much, but Diamonds Are Forever-The Remix Album shows that Bassey's songs lend themselves perfectly to electronic remixes. Of course, after the success of the Propellerheads' single 'History Repeating', you had to figure it was only a matter of time before someone got the idea to create such an album. awayTEAM's remix of 'Where Do I Begin?' is a great example of using techno music to enhance a tune instead of overshadowing it, with thumping bass and drum machine blending nicely with the string arrangements from the original recording. Kenny Dope's remix of Bassey's cover of The Doors' 'Light My Fire', one of two versions of the song on this album, features powerful drumming underneath Bassey's sultry vocals with minimal overdubs. The Bond theme 'Diamonds Are Forever', remixed by Mantronik, convert the song from a movie theme to a tune that sounds tailor-made for European club music, while the frenzied remix of 'Big Spender' by Wild Oscar makes the listener want to crank the volume all the way up, something many younger listeners thought they'd never do. The highlight is the Propellerheads' (who better do do it?) fabulous remix of the Bassey standard 'Goldfinger': it begins with a keyboard & acoustic guitar intro with a shuffling drum beat and scratching, then launches into the familiar horn flourishes of the original song. The shuffling beat and funky bass continues underneath Bassey's vocals, simultaneously reinventing the classic song while keeping the song's memorable arrangement intact. The album isn't perfect, with Groove Armada's underwhelming reworking of 'Never Never Never' being the low point, but for the most part, Diamonds Are Forever is a highly enjoyable listen. Watch for plenty of kids surreptitiously browsing the Adult Contemporary section of the local record store for the very first time in search of this album.
a new take on some classic songs.......2000-09-25
there seem to be no track listings yet so here goes: 1) Where Do I Begin ("Love Story" theme) by awayTEAM 2) Goldfinger by Propellorheads 3) C'mon Baby Light My Fire by Kenny Dope 4) Diamonds Are Forever by Mantronik 5) Easy Thing To Do by Nightmares on Wax 6) Never Never Never by Groove Armada 7) Hey Big Spender by Wild Oscar 8) Spinning Wheel by DJ Spinna 9) C'mon Baby Light My Fire by Twelftree 10) If You Go Away by Moloko & Mark Brydon
A bit of a mixed bag. The remixers worked with the original records, so most of them have left in the original orchestrations too and just added a techno rhythm, which works better for some (Moloko, Propellorheads) than others. It makes you realise once again what a fabulous voice Bassey had and still has. Full credit to her to allow her recordings to be remixed, hopefully creating a new generation of fans !

Unbelievable beats!!!.......2003-05-16
The revved-up samba opening of "Goldfinger" is a mind-blowing delight! Recreated by the Propellerheads who so ingeniously shot Shirley to millineum fame with "History Repeating" from their trip-hop cd, "DecksDrumsAndRockAndRoll," show what "arrangement" is all about!
The THREE separate versions of Jim Morrison's "Light My Fire" are just about the weirdest thing I've ever heard because of the seeming incongruency of the Lounge Lizard original sung by a caberet belter, but these remixes uncover the parallel campiness of Morrison's and Bassey's very separate deliveries!!
After "Goldfinger," the best cut is the wah-wah acid-trip of "Spinning Wheel," a true spaced-out marriage of medium and message.
The ONLY reason this sweet cd gets 4 and not 5 stars from me is the short-shrift given to my favorite John Barry song, "Moonraker." The lyrics and melody are transcendent, but they are forgone in favor of an tiresome repetition of the opening couplet combined with space-speak transmissions from astronauts.
Grab this genre-bending, time-traversing, technology-condensing collection and start your trip!
