The pocketbook-conscious JSP crew do it again! This four-CD set stretches from Ella's early recordings with the Chick Webb Orchestra up to her penultimate solo years at Decca, but organizes its 89 selections thematically, not chronologically. Thus Disc A, With Friends, spotlights duets with foils including Louis Jordan, the Mills Brothers, and Louis Armstrong. Disc B, The Hits, collects pop successes: "A Tisket a Tasket," "I Want the Waiter With the Water." Kicking off with her legendary "Lady Be Good," Disc C, Jazz Lady, showcases Fitzgerald's improvisational scatting and adept mimicry; she apes Satchmo perfectly on "Basin Street Blues." The final Evergreens set circumnavigates the absence of Verve-era Songbook material by anthologizing other standards, plus renditions of Cole Porter and Gershwin tunes she revisited later. The packaging and liner notes are bare bones, and audiophiles may be put off by occasional inconsistencies in fidelity, but otherwise, 1936-1950 comes highly recommended. --Kurt B. Reighley

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Rhino & George Feltenstein!.......2005-09-06

I've been waiting for this CD for years and it's finally here. Where else can you find a collection of Kalmar and Ruby songs? If you love the movie, you'll love the soundtrack. As with all Rhino soundtracks, both the audio, art work, and liner notes quality is great. Buy it before all 2500 copies are taken...

5 out of 5 stars beautiful old time music.......2004-07-13

there are so many great songs sung by beautiful women-Gale robbins singing I love you so much, Arleen doll on All alone Monday, but the best is the enchanting unforgettable Thinking of you, sung by Vera Ellen, the best dancing lady ever on the screen. Sad we cant see Miss Ellen dance to the song but the wonderful scene will live in your memory. A very nice record,Also Miss Debby Reynolds does a very nice imitation of Hellen Kane on I wanna be loved by yo.

    Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

    Pros:
    * 89 sides for less than $30
    * Excellent remastering with far less surface noise than most recordings available from the era
    * Young Ella singing, swinging, and improvising brilliantly with Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan, and the Mills Brothers
    * What many consider the best female singing voice ever recorded

    Cons:
    * JSP Boxes are hardly box sets with minimal notes and packaging
    * No Songbook records -- any Ella fan should hear some of that superlative material
