Customer Reviews:
This is the REAL Grease........2007-01-08
Grease, here in its original form, is an adventurous, raw, rowdy, INSIGHTFUL show that paints a very accurate picture of a pivotal moment in American history when rock and roll was giving birth to the Sexual Revolution. Grease is not a silly, brainless 50s parody, but is instead a smart, insightful, alternative piece of theatre (inspired in many ways by HAIR), with real muscle, attitude, rawness, and a thrilling, subversive, over-sexed energy. If you want to hear what Grease SHOULD sound like, if you want to hear the real sound of early rock and roll, get this original 1972 recording. Forget the awful revival, and forget the movie (as fun as it may be) -- THIS is Grease. [...]
Love it!.......2006-12-30
We have been trying to get our drama teacher to let us do Grease for years (way before I even went to the school) and this year she's finally letting us.
I've always been a fan of Grease whenever it would come on TV I'd watch it and sing to the songs and I always wanted to be Sandy. But, by listening to the soundtrack I've changed my mind into trying out for Marty because "Freddy, My Love" is, in my opinion, the best song on the soundtrack, the only problem, it's an alto song and I'm a soprano.
Anyway, enough about my life, let's talk about the album. As I said before I've always been a Grease fan, but this version has made me love it even more. This original version is way better than the movie version, the songs seem to fall into place better than in the movie (because they were written for the play of course). Actually, the songs NOT in the movie are the best songs in the play, other than "Freddy, My Love" there are "Mooning" sung by Roger and Jan at a picnic, "Raining on Prom Night" (replaced by "Hoplessly Devoted to You" in the play, Sandy sings this song in her room instead of going to the dance as she did in the movie), "Alone at a Drive-in Movie" (replaced by "Sandy" in the movie, basically, it says the same thing as "Sandy" does), and "All Choked Up" (replaced by "You're the One That I Want", I'm kinda glad it was replaced because I like "You're the One That I Want" better).
I hope this helped you, it probably didn't because of all the personal anecdotes I had to put in there. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that it's a good album and worth buying if you're a Grease fan.
Grease, Grit and Parody.......2006-11-18
At some point in the early 1970's, nostaglia for the 1950's started running out of control. At a time when America was dealing with many social changes, somehow the decade of the 1950's became yearned after for
fun, innocence, rock and roll, and postwar prosperity. The realty being it was a decade that also included
economic issues, open descrimination, and very tame music (the name "the quiet generation" was there for a reason).
Grease came to life as a parody of the 1950's nostaglia craze, and it painted a truer, grittier portrait of the late 50's at an urban high school. The movie that came out in 1978, and the Broadway revival of the 90's whitewashed the story, and cleaned up the language so much the original Broadway musical got lost in the shuffle.
The great score is lead by Adrienne Barbaue, Barry Bostwick, and Carol Demas, and a number of songs never made it to the film, including Those Magic Changes, and Freddy My Love. Yes, in the 1950's there still was a draft!. Adrienne's character of Rizzo steals the show with her numbers, Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee, and There Are Worse Things I Could Do, finally the "Bad Girl" is allowed to be human. Summer Nights, It's Raining On Prom Night, and Rock N Roll Party Queen speak to the teenager that remains in all of us.
Enjoy this very real trip into the late 1950's
Ken
Greased Lightning has struck.......2006-09-06
GREASE what a classic. I'm listening to it right now! I recently saw the play and they did the song you're the one that i want instead of all chocked up witch replaces that and in the movie they use that song and so on but the only reason im not mentioning Sandy or Hoplessly Devoted is because those aren't n aturally ever in the play it was made for the movie. This soundtract is still great five stars to the cast writer and composer
The original, stll the best!.......2006-07-22
I saw the original production of Grease and it was hysterical. It was originally intended as an affectionate parody of the 50's and was a laugh riot. Then Hollywood got a hold of it and turned it into the cotton candy, pop fluff that the world see's it as now, totally missing the point (and losing alot of the fun). The original cast led by Barry Bostwick, Adrienne Barbaue and Carol Demas, were a blast! Stick to this version if you like real parody, humorous and true to the 50's rock style.

As good as Pomus and Gordy were, they can't compare with the premier rock & roll songwriters of the pre-Beatles era: Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Chuck Berry, and Percy Mayfield. The team of Leiber (the lyricist) and Stoller (the composer) created such enduring standards as "Kansas City," "Hound Dog," "Stand By Me," "Spanish Harlem," "Jailhouse Rock," and many more. Those songs and 33 more were assembled into a bookless Broadway musical called Smokey Joe's Cafe, which was nominated for eight Tony Awards. If this soundtrack album is any indication, the show was an abomination, an act of self-betrayal by Leiber and Stoller, who not only participated in putting the show together but also co-produced the album with Arif Mardin. Instead of remaining true to the songs' rock & roll roots, the soundtrack producers have allowed the obscure stage performers to commit Broadway's worst sins: excessive earnestness, undernourished rhythms, and bombastic over-singing. Everyone in the cast has a good singing voice, but no one has a distinctive musical personality. Michael Park's Presley parody on "Jailhouse Rock," B.J. Crosby's confusion of vocal power for vocal attitude on "Hound Dog," and Victor Trent Cook's syrupy version of "I (Who Have Nothing)" prove Broadway chorus dancers are no substitute for real rock & roll singers. --Geoffrey Himes

Smokey Joe's Cafe.......2007-01-24
Smokey Joe's Cafe is an execellent Broadway play and the musical soundtrack is great listening. The songs of Leiber and Stoller bring back memories of the 50 and 60's. The songs are classics that last for all time.
THE BEST.......2006-04-02

competing dances.......2005-08-06
I think this is a cd with great selection of good music. It has great musioc for solo and duo and even small and large group songs for competion. dance competions!!!!!
Fabulous.......2004-11-25
I'm in High School, and we've performed Smokey Joe's Cafe 3 times already as a One-Act Play. I have to say that this is just an amazing show! Not only are kids our age into it but the older people are grooving with us too!
People just go estatic when you perform memorable songs, like "Jailhouse Rock" and "Hound Dog". And it's always great to hear people humming or singing to themselves "Poison Ivy" and "Kansas City".
These are classic and timeless songs that will never pass out of existence.

Album Description
Reintroduce yourself to the Smithsonian Folkways essentials. More than 15 years ago, Folkways: The Original Vision was one of the first albums released by a then fledgling Smithsonian Folkways label. It was conceived and sequenced to complement Folkways: A Vision Shared, a benefit/tribute album consisting of 14 reinterpretations of Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly songs by a cross-section of some of popular music's top stars at the time. Now, with the re-release of this historic album on its 15th anniversary, Smithsonian Folkways expands upon the original concept with the addition of 6 bonus tracks, and enhances it with stunning new packaging and newly extended notes. Original Vision now provides an even fuller insight into the scope and impact that Guthrie's and Lead Belly's music has made over the last half century.
Customer Reviews:
An amazing compilation from the Folkways vaults.......2005-12-09
This is yet another amazing time capsule of classic folk recordings put out by the Smithsonian Folkway label. Instead of focusing on many artists singles from the 1940's, this compilation is dedicated to two well respected and influential performers of the day, Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly.
The songs range from being light hearted stories about failed goose killings to oppression drenched verses on racism. All sung with the optimism and pain that the open lands of the US offered.
With 26 tracks you might find an uninteresting track yet they all offer a unique view into the "grapes of wrath" era in which folk music was deeply established into the working class of the south and west thus making each track worth your time. After listening to only a few songs you are able to clearly see where the popular folk artists of the late 50's and 60's found their influences.
This compilation came about after the "Folkways:A Vision Shared" compilation was released in 1988. It focused on songs from the two musicians presented on this release but sung by contemporary musicians of the day. A desire to release the artists original recordings arose and this was the product of that vision. With a comprehensive 28 page booklet this album seems to be a worthy addition to any collection.
I admit that I do not know much classic folk to truly critizise the overall importance of this release. Never the less I feel this to be a timeless collection of songs from an age long since past.

The drawback to this comprehensive feast of prime Vladimir Horowitz is EMI's overzealous noise reduction, which smoothes the edges off of the great pianist's unique sonority. This is less bothersome in the 1951 sessions, which produced two delicious Scarlatti Sonatas not reissued elsewhere. The high-voltage Horowitz of the thirties was a more direct, less mannered artist than his older self. But his classic Liszt Sonata, Chopin Fourth Scherzo, and other solo EMI jewels are best heard via APR's superior (albeit more expensive) transfers. This erratic but exciting Rach 3 (with cuts, and a momentary third movement memory lapse) still awaits a CD transfer to match that of a bygone Seraphim LP. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Super-human virtuosity of young Horowitz.......2007-06-15
I give 5 stars for this 3CD set despite the old recording sound. Sound of piano itself is reasonably well for the day once you are used to the background noise, good enough to convey the subtlty and delicacy of his playing.
Prokofiev's Toccata is still fastest and most exciting on records, verging on super-human. Rachmaninov's 3rd concerto is the best performance by Horowitz with more argency and intensity than his later recordings. The incandescent account of Liszt Sonata is one of the most compelling and beautiful along side Richter and Pogorelich's classic accounts.
Haydn and Scarlatti sonatas, Beethoven variations, Schumann's Toccata, Chopin Etudes, Stravinsky's Petrushka and so much more display Horowitz' keen sense of tonal colours and mind blowing fluency of playing.

Customer Reviews:
Superlative jazz collection.......2007-01-23
BLACK LEGENDS OF JAZZ is a two CD set packaged in a heavy paper slipcover very reminsicent of the type once used to house specialty multiple book sets. The 80-plus page booklet that's included is printed on matted heavyweight cream-colored paper, and has an intentional look of antiquity that is most appropos. This small tome provides a wealth of detail about performers and era.
The 40 songs of the collection, which spans DECCA's golden jazz age (1926-'59), are not in chronological or logical order. This is a hardship only if one is trying to study a year-by-year progression. Output level for all tracks is solid, remastering nothing less than superb. No heavy filtering here, no added echo or reprocessing of any kind. Source material is the best available.
DECCA's BLACK LEGENDS OF JAZZ is an absolutely great album. Highly recommended.

A Great Compilation, with a few 'classics' missing.......2003-09-10
Decca has put together a wide range of early Jazz from a bunch of different artists; some with tracks you would not expect, which I suspect may have been intentional, the dates vary from 1929-1959, but the latter date is a bit misleading (see track list). There is no "modern" jazz here. It is also a self-admitted limited survey, due to the label. Men like Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges are not represented due to the fact that no solos from any Decca, or Decca owned subsidiary, were deemed proper examples of either. But what is included is always classic, even if not the most obvious candidate for the artist. Making up for any shortcomings in that regard is the 79 page booklet included, which is really half the presentation. Well done, informative, and richly packaged, it is a great companion to the disc, and a great gift idea for a jazz aficianado.

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation, that's not just the usual stuff........2002-05-01
I've owned a number of the song-books for years, and love them. If you want something more, or different, though, it's hard to sort through all the other albums out there. I think this collection gives a great overview of her other work, especially the early stuff. All of the performances are good, although one or two of the songs are duds (like the sequel to "A Tisket A Tasket"). A number of the tracks feature the "Ink Spots" and Louis Jordan as well. With 50 tracks there's a lot here for any taste. For my money, this was a great buy.
