CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL JUST KEEPS ROCKIN' AND ROLLIN'........2007-02-13
I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "CHRONICLE, VOLUME TWO, TWENTY GREAT CCR CLASSICS" by one of Rock's most sacred legendary bands of all-time, I give you one of America's pride and joy's, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. This legendary album would be originally released in 1986 on Vinyl/LP, Cassette and Compact Disc on the Fantasy Records label. Like "CHRONICLE, VOLUME ONE, 20 GREATEST HITS," "CHRONICLE, VOLUME TWO, 20 GREAT CCR CLASSICS is released on a special Two-24-Karat Gold Compact Disc set edition. The 24-Karat Gold coating produces a highly reflective surface for the laser signal. In fact, the Gold CD is the ultimate experience in recorded music. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
The whole world was blessed with the original "CHRONICLE, VOLUME ONE, 20 GREATEST HITS" when it was released in 1976. Now the whole world would be blessed again ten years later with the release of "CHRONICLE, VOLUME TWO, TWENTY GREAT CCR CLASSICS" in 1986. Its only appropriate that Fantasy Records would release another compilation collection on this legendary band, there was just not enough room to put all of their hit songs on the first volume. When you listen to "CHRONICLE, VOLUME TWO, TWENTY GREAT CCR CLASSICS," you realize that this band really recorded some fantastic hits throughout their whole career. It also makes you wonder what took Fantasy Records so long (Ten years) to release the second volume. In my opinion, "CHRONICLE, VOLUME TWO, TWENTY GREAT CCR CLASSICS" is another true testament of the sheer greatness, graceful genius and a fine tribute to a legendary band that has already been proven to be ahead of their time.
Now we get to the most important part of the whole review, the music. If you want to hear the true Rocker's on this compilation album, listen to the songs such as "Walk On The Water," "Susie Q (Part two)," the breathtaking "Born On The Bayou," the Little Richard classic "Good Golly Miss Molly," the rugged "Tombstone Shadow," "It Came Out Of The Sky," the Elvis like Rocker "My Baby Left Me," the wicked "Pagan Baby," the soulful heartfelt "It's Just A Thought," the tough rockin' "Molina," the spirited "Born To Move" and the Ricky Nelson classic "Hello Mary Lou."
The slow Rock Ballads on this compilation album are the classics such as "Wrote A Song For Everyone" and "(Wish I Could) Hideaway." CCR could really show their sensitive side by playing a little more mellower.
The only slow Blues Rocker on this compilation album is the classic song "Night Time Is The Right Time." This Blues number is a true heartfelt song recorded the CCR way. CCR could really play the Blues.
The Country Rockers on this compilation album are the classic songs such as "Cotton Fields," "Don't Look Now (It Ain't You Or Me)," the ever popular "The Midnight Special," "Before You Accuse Me" and "Lookin' For A Reason." These are pure Country Rockers, my favorite is "The Midnight Special."
Overall, this is one hell of compilation album that compliments the other original volume perfectly.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this second volume compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album has already been proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL will forever be remembered as the people's band that represented the youth culture and the bikers of the turbulent sixties and beyond. Their music expressed the feeling of how the times were unfolding during the turbulent sixties and into the seventies. When CCR broke up, one of Rock's greatest all-time bands would be silenced and laid to rest. The world was waiting for a reunion but all hopes would be shattered with the untimely death of TOM FOGERTY on 6 September 1990. FOGERTY would die as a result of AIDS given to him through a blood transfusion. Prior to his death, the FOGERTY brothers did not get along and would be fighting constantly throughout their whole career together. TOM FOGERTY was establishing himself in his own right as a songwriter and singer but remained in the shadow of his brother JOHN FOGERTY throughout their whole career. TOM FOGERTY would be the first CCR member to quit the band and go solo. CCR would later break up in 1972. However, the remaining surviving members would have a brief reunion while receiving Rock's highest ultimate honor of being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in January 1993. As of this date, JOHN FOGERTY resolved his conflict issues and legal disputes with his old record label Fantasy Records and is now back with his old label better than ever keeping the CCR legend alive. So here's to you John, the late great Tom, Stu and Clifford. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL LIVES. JOHN FOGERTY RULES. R.I.P. TOM FOGERTY, Born 9 November 1941, Died 6 September 1990. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
Chronicles 2: Twenty great CCR Classics by Creedence Clearwater Revival.......2007-01-19
The band CCR formed during the turbulent times of the 60s and early 70s, they gave poetic justice to that period with original compositions and made even greater classics out of old tunes. They created entertaining melodies with political fore-thought. They did this without profanity nor by debasing the religious beliefs of others...unlike many of today's young artists. This album deserves five stars.

Appalachian Stomp is an ideal starter disc for those just beginning to explore bluegrass. Mostly this is because its 18 selections are so immediately accessible. The "classics" here, in other words, are usually those infrequent bluegrass cuts to have gained radio recognition beyond a core bluegrass audience. That explains why along with timeless standards such as Flatt & Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and the Osborne Brothers' "Rocky Top" we also get "Dueling Banjos" from the film Deliverance, a cut that is to classic bluegrass what Walter Murphy is to Beethoven. There are less immediately obvious choices too, though. If your previous exposure to bluegrass doesn't go beyond the Holy Trinity of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers--for example, if you've never heard J.D. Crowe & the New South's stellar example of progressive bluegrass, "Old Home Place," or experienced Jimmy Martin lay down the law on his rousing "You Don't Know My Mind"--then you're in for a high-lonesome surprise. --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:
Anne Murray,What a Wonderful World.......2007-05-30
Very pleased with the quality and the fast shipment. Thank you
White Girl Gospel.......2007-05-13
Thanks to Anne Murray, there's proof that white girls can raise a strong, warm voice in praise, too. I have happily given copies of this CD to my diversity of friends, and many of them have expressed happy surprise. Contains probably the best rocking version anywhere of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee."
I love this CD!.......2007-03-16
I share this music with my patients during Sunday morning group therapy and have always gotten a positive response. Patients who have refused to talk to the nurses and the counselors find themselves wanting to open up and talk about themselves and how they want to work harder on improving their lives. My co-workers will ask me every Sunday "do you have the CD?" and we go about our duties singing along with Anne and praising God.
I cannot adequately describe the joy that listening to Anne Murray singing
God's praises brings to me. I seldom attend church, but I always take the time to play her music on Sunday mornings and commune with the Lord.
Co-workers listening from down the hall will gravitate to our unit just to
listen. Even the hard-core, profanity-driven ones find themselves in a better place, even if it is for a brief moment, when they are listening to
this CD.
Thank you, Lord, and bless you, Anne Murray!
Wonderful Classics.......2007-01-20
I love Anne Murray--this is my favorite CD. A great gift for someone who is going through trials in their lives.
Amazing Anne.......2007-01-10
I bought this CD for me, after hearing Anne Murray in a local concert. I listened to these beautiful songs in my car during the busy holiday season. The music was so inspiring, it inspired me to buy this CD as a Christmas gift for special people in my life.

Love Vaughn Williams.......2007-02-22
I bought this because Vaughan Williams has so many wonderful compositions. This particular recording contained many favorites including, but not exclusively the English Folk Song Suite conducted by Sir Adrian Boult and performed by the London Symphony... very moving!!!
Ralph!.......2007-01-09
Ralph Vaughn Williams at his best; lush, sometimes-inspiring presentation of a well-chosen collection of his works.
Good readings lacking passion in good sound.......2006-11-07
Many years after his death, Sir Adrian Boult continues to be admired as one of the linchpin -- and perhaps the archtype -- conductors of the music of his friend and countryman, Ralph Vaughan Williams. This recording, made in the autumnal years of Boutl's life, is a generous collection of bucolic English music from Vaughan Williams.
While these performances are lovely, as the other reviewers here have reported, they pale in comparison to the passion Boult provided earlier in his career. On a recording made from a Westminster LP, Boult provided more passionate and committed versions of the English Folk Song Suite, Greensleeves Fantasia and Norfolk Rhapsody No. 1 linked to a dramatic reading of the Variations on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, one of Vaughan Williams most popular and enduring tunes.
Like the comparison between his early mono recordings of Vaughan Williams' symphonies and his later stereo recording, Boult was simply older and more at ease with the music in the later recordings. While they are still wonderful, the later stereo recordings lack some of the mystery and passion of his earlier work, especially his "Antartica" symphony. People that search the Internet relentlessly can locate the earlier recordings including a CD restoration of the old Westminster record.
For those not interested in that, these renderings of Serenade to Msuic, English Folk Song Suite, Norfolk Rhapsody No.1, Fantasia On 'Greensleeves', In The Fen Country and violinist Hugh Bean's The Lark Ascending are beautifully done at a lower voltage. Either gives you the ethereal Boult although his earlier recordings, sometimes in mono, give life and breadth to these works not reflected here.
Vaughn Williams: Serenade to Music.......2006-11-03
Fantastic recording. Having a British conductor (especially Sir Adrian Boult), with a British Orchestra, playing works composed by a British composer, brings an exhuburance and attention to detail not found in other recordings.
Tolkien, a cup of Darjeeling by the fire, and this CD.......2006-07-17
I laughed when I read one reviewer here who admitted that he liked to play this lovely CD while reading Tolkien. And why not? It's the magic of art to make those of us who live in the desert Southwest (or midtown Manhattan) believe we are atually in an English thatched cottage around the time of WW I, nourishing our English souls with the comforting music of Vaughan Williams.
There have been better, certainly more modern composers, but VW had the rare ability to evoke an entire culture. Every work here speaks of his total union with the English spirit, and these readings by Boult are beyond reproach. I don't traffic in "best recording ever" talk, and there are versions of the Serenade to Music that I cherish from Matthrew Best and (above all) Leonard Bernstein at the opening of Philharmonic Hall in 1962. Yet this would probably be the one CD I'd give a young friend to win him or her over to one of the most lovable and accessible of great composers.

great album.......2006-11-03
Classics indeed! This album is full of so many great songs, it's nearly impossible for me to pick out a favorite or choose a place to start. "Friday Night Blues," "Miss Emily's Picture," "Old School," "She can't say that anymore," "Blue Highway," and of course "Rose Colored Glasses" are all included on this brilliant album that showcases John Conlee's voice well. I used to listen to these songs as a kid and was glad that he chose to release this album. All the songs on it were well chosen, and I recommend it to anyone.
Re-Record?????? Paging Miss Emily!!!!.......2006-07-23
Despite all the rave reviews I'm wondering if this is a dreaded rerecord. Maybe I'm paranoid, but the country music industry is so sleazy. And some stars feel entitled to cash in. How else can you explain the John Anderson Anthology...Horror. (John, how could you?) Or the Bill Anderson Oh Boy Classic [Oh boy here comes a rerecord). Hey, the CD sounds great. But what makes me suspiscious is that there are no copyright dates anywhere on this CD except for one. Also the cryptic message on the inside sleeve. Could someone please clear this up. And not some RCR Bud Logan shill either. John Conlee is one of my hero's and this is really worrying me. I can't look at this CD with Rose Colered Glasses anymore.

In a period when the "Urban Cowboy" crap was hitting the scene, and the dead Nashville Sound was replaced with infusions of Disco sounds, there were few bright spots in country music. True Honky Tonk music was all but dead, and noone knew what direction country music was heading or if it would even survive; luckily this would change with the intro of the neo-traditionalists in the mid-'80's. But in the meantime, we had John Conlee. His music could have very well been recorded for a Pop-oriented audience, or it could have been recorded differently for the adult-contemporary crowd. However, what made his music absolutely, no-bull, country, was his voice....no matter what song he sang, his voice had the sound of a man who was well on his way to a good bourbon drunk. Just as Willie had a signature nasal sound, Faron had his signature pause, and Bill Anderson had that sappy whisper, John Conlee had that whiskey soaked voice. But, just by looking at the man, you would never know it; once he opened his mouth and the first note came out, it was a whole different story. This album has a superb collection of songs that are sadly, almost forgotten. Included are the famous: "Rose Colored Glasses" and Backside of Thirty", but also, there are some lighter songs, such as "From Your Knees", "Miss Emily's Picture", and "I Dont Remember Loving You". Best of all, these are original recordings, not remakes by an aging star. It's too bad John gained prominence in an era when Country Music was at it's lowest, as it will probably eclipse his remarkable talent. Buy the album, you will definately enjoy it.
An almost forgotten country singer.......2004-10-03
John Conlee had a fair measure of success on the country charts but is largely forgotten now. Despite the high quality of his hits, he never became a really big star. This collection covers his most important period from 1978 to 1985, though he had hits after that. John had a classic country voice that is particularly suited to sad songs.
Rose colored glasses, his debut single, made the country top five. His next two singles (Lady lay down, Backside of thirty) were both country number ones. He then had several hits that didn't make the very top, of which Before my time, Friday night blues, She can't say that anymore and Miss Emily's picture all made number two on the country charts. John then had three more number ones with Common man, I'm only in it for the love and In my eyes. One last number one (Got my heart set on you, from 1986) is outside the scope of this compilation. Of the other tracks here, I particularly like Baby you're something, and Busted.
If you enjoy traditional country by such singers as Merle Haggard and John Anderson, give John Conlee a listen.
Long overdue reissue of some classic country hits.......2004-07-14
Although the album art shows an older edition of the artist himself, these tracks are actually the original radio hits -- nineteen Top 20 hits recorded for the RCA label between 1978-85, presented in chronological order, with three additional new tunes thrown in for good measure. Conlee's classic work has been inexplicably out of print for quite some time; finally it took a vanity pressing on his own label to make the stuff available to his fans, another sad statement for the state of Nashville's ongoing profits-over-posterity ethic. Anyway, it's all great stuff, a slick, latter-day countrypolitan sound fronted by a phenomenally expressive voice... It's a shame Conlee couldn't also lease his later material for the Columbia and 16th Avenue labels, which also included several sizable hits, but with tunes like "Rose Colored Glasses," "Backside Of Thirty" and "Busted" back in print, there's still plenty for country fans to cheer about.

The Very Best of the New Christy Minstrels.......2007-01-10
When I was a small boy in the 1950s, my dad used to bring young sailors home with him sometimes. He or my mom would give them a home-cooked meal and an opportunity to visit with their kids (my siblings and me). In return, sometimes, they would provide engaging conversation and/or musical entertainment. So it was with a couple of young doughboys who would later wow audiences across America and around the world: Dean Jones and Randy Sparks.
While Dean went on to become an actor in the Disney stable and star of such classic films as 'The Love Bug' and 'Beethoven', Randy formed a band and 'sparked' (pun intended!) the Folk Music fad that swept like a wave around the world in the mid-1960s. Named for the Christy Minstrels who rambled from town to dusty town in the Old West entertaining far-flung American settlers, Randy Sparks and the New Christy Minstrels traveled around the world and fanned the cooling embers of our rich folk heritage to a bright, new flame.
Songs like 'Green, Green', 'Ramblin'' and 'Today' as well as many made popular by such other folk artists as Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio, were often written and first performed by the Christies. Many of Randy's troupe, such as lead singer Barry Maguire, went on to have great solo careers in the music business.
Randy Sparks and Dean Jones may not remember us, but my dad, Frank King, never tires of reminiscing about entertaining them in our San Diego family home 'way back when.
Golden Classics Edition: Today/Ramblin'.......2006-12-12
I am so happy NCM have come out on CD. I have almost every NCM album (yes, vinyl) they made. My father taught me to love good music, no matter what the genre. NCM were my favorites growing up, because they so heavily relied on the voices, rather than a show or the instruments. It is a simple form of performance music, but when you look into the combinations of harmony and the talents that sprang into other areas from this group - it is one of the foundations of today's music.
Presenting/In Person The New Christy Minstrels.......2006-11-05
I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the CD. Given that there are two albums on the CD, it is a good value if this is your type of music.
Excellent.......2005-06-09
Both albums on one CD...what a bargin! A nice touch for the NCM fans!

Hard to Find 45's on CD Pop & Country Classics.......2007-01-18
This is a great collection of old country hits that I remember listening to. There were several gems on here that I have not heard in 40 years. More than worth the money.
Ah,takes me back to my youth........2007-01-10
A nice assortment of oldies but goodies that disappeared from the charts years ago but live on in our heads.Worth the money.
Eric does it again..........2003-01-26
In this volume of Eric Records' "Hard To Find 45s..." series, are tunes that, in most instances, registered on both the pop and country charts. The emphasis is on the country here with all these tracks being top-10 with the exception of two top-15 charters and one that did not make the country charts. While some of these tunes are not strictly hard to find on CD, they provide an interesting trip through the country, and often pop, music of the late 50s right up into the 80's. Some of the standout selections here include Frank Ifield's "I Remember You", the pop-only entry here with its cleverly integrated quasi-yodeling, Bobby Edwards' "You're The Reason" and "I'm Gonna Hire A Wino To Decorate Our Home", Lefty Frizell's brother David's country-only novelty chart-topper. As has come to be expected, these Eric CDs present their tracks in the best possible sound quality and in stereo whenever possible. In this volume, only tracks 1-4,6,7 are in mono. Add to this piece's musical attributes the accompanying comprehensive liner notes booklet and you have another outstanding issue in Eric Records' small but potent library of classic pop tunes on CD. This, as with the other CDs in the series, is a highly desireable addition to any collection of music of the genre.
Inspired collection of crossover pop/country hits.......2002-10-25
Eric Records has quietly been returning numerous original singles to circulation with their "Hard to Find 45s on CD" series. This volume turns their focus to nineteen tracks, dating from 1957's "Gone" by Ferlin Husky, and continuing through 1983's "Baby I Lied" by Deborah Allen, that found success on both the pop and country charts. Also included are a pair of tracks (Frank Ifield's "I Remember You" and David Frizzell's "I'm Gonna Hire a Wino to Decorate Our Home" that only made one chart (pop and country, respectively), but had crossover potential, and are difficult to find on CD.
Eric Records' usual attention to detail (true stereo where available, chart position and date) is supplemented by excellent liner notes by Greg Adams. The background on the bands and songs is especially enlightening for pop fans approaching songs that originated in the country realm, and vice-versa. Even more interesting is how his notes follow the arc of the music's dual absorption of country and mainstream pop influences, from the original Nashville Sound of Ferlin Husky's "Gone" through the nearly unrecognizable country influence of Sylvia's new-wave, synthesizer-based "Nobody."
Throughout there are terrific memories (check the song list!), many of which are very difficult to find elsewhere on CD (or, if found, often turn out to be other than the original 45 take or mix). Eric Records' meticulous approach to selecting masters and converting them to the digital realm, complemented by their excellent ears for selecting and organizing tracks, has resulted in a truly superb spin.
Just what the pop/country junkie is looking for.......2002-08-07
Eric Records has done it again. Just when you thought the "once-heavily played, but now completely ignored" genre has reached its acme, along comes Hard To Find 45s On CD: Pop & Country Classics.
This CD ranges in a time period from Ferlin Husky's 10-week No. 1 country smash, "Gone" in 1957 to David Frizzell's novelty, "I'm Gonna Hire A Wino (To Decorate Our Home)," which topped the C&W charts in 1982.
If you're like me (and you must be to be interested in these compilations), you have seen the sad demise of the all-inclusive Top 40 AM radio era in which I grew up. The same station, within the same hour, would play the Beatles, Martha & The Vandellas, Roger Miller, Elvis Presley, Clyde McPhatter, Lawrence Welk, Bill Anderson, The Everly Brothers, Smokey Robinson...Well, you get the point.
Today, radio has balkanized to the point that each subgroup is neatly divided and the word "crossover" has become obscene. Thank goodness Eric has the foresight and SOUL to bring wistful individuals like yours truly an opportunity to trip back through Memory Lane - for 62 minutes and 26 seconds, at least.
Some of my favorites in this collection include "I Remember You." by Frank Ifield, though not a country hit by the Austrailan crooner, is nevertheless one of my picks. Other tunes which make me smile in this compilation, the extremely-silly "Tennessee Bird Walk," Henson Cargell's country classic, "Skip A Rope," Billy Grammar's fiesty, "Gottoa Travel On," and my favorite county hit of the 1960s, "Saginaw, Michigan (how this great Lefty Frizzell number could have only reached No. 85 on the Hot 100 in January of 1964 - at the same time that Bobby Vinton's "There! I Said It Again" rule the charts - is FAR beyond my feeble ability to comprehend).
Moving into the 1970s, a weak decade for most music, Eric salvages my palatte with "Easy Loving," and the goofy, but catchy Bellamy Brothers ("Let You Love Flow") hit, "If I said You Had a Beautiful Body, etc.", the 1975 double No. 1,"Hey, Won't You Play Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song (B.J. Thomas' second chart-topper since "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head"), and the great Roy Clark with his only Top 40 pop hit, "Yesterday When I Was Young."
The song from the 1980s that I most enjoy on this CD is Sylvia's C&W No. 1, "Nobody," which also broke into the pop top 15.
All told, I can, again, give an unqualified thumbs up and five stars to Eric's latest compilation, with a fevered hope for many, many more to come.

English composer Robert Prizeman has taken a conventional English boy's choir--usually a haven for sweet songs and ecclesiastical renderings--and made them contemporary without selling out any of their intrinsic charm. Their stacked choral voices and lead sopranos, dressed up with electronica rhythms, synthesizers, and strings still sound like they could be coming from the church balcony, even while they exude an Enya-like appeal. While there are adaptations of Gregorian chants and Sibelius hymns, most of the songs are Prizeman originals based on those styles, with texts often drawn from Latin Liturgy. Except for the chilled romanticism of "Stay With Me," and the rhythm driven "Adoramus," whose chorus sounds like a Harry Potter incantation, few of the songs on Free have the anthemic pop appeal of "Salva Me" or "Vespera" from previous albums. Instead, Prizeman has opted for a more serene sound on Free, even with their first video from the disc, the yearning "I Am the Day." Some of it, like Prizeman's setting of a Walter de la Mare poem on "A Song of Enchantment," gets lugubrious. But most of Free floats on gentle soprano breezes, intrinsically innocent, even if the boys might be smoking cigarettes behind the altar. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
HEAVENLY.......2007-06-19
This cd is like listening to a heavenly choir. "Free" is an awesome audio experience. It can turn a stressful day into a calm evening.
Sweetest voices ever!.......2007-06-16
I happened across this CD at Borders and was able to listen to it! One of the sweetest and heavenly CDs ever! I bought two: one for myself and one as a gift.
Awesome.......2007-01-04
I never knew that young boys could have such wonderful voices, almost angelic. The music is very relaxing and haunting at times, but that's what makes it a good album to hear to. The harmonies were so beautiful. To all choir fans, this is a must-have album.
Soothing and thought provoking.......2006-02-23
Libera is an amazing group of boys and Robert Prizeman really knows how to put everything together. My favorite songs on "Free" are Voca Me, Stay With Me, Adoramus, I Am the Day and Twilight. Each time I listen to this disc, another song seems to start growing on me. This was my first Libera CD (I have since bought Luminosa, Libera and Visions) and at first I liked the faster more upbeat songs but as time went on I started to really love the softer ones like Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep (beautifully done by Ben Crawley and Joseph Platt). The soloists are lovely with clear and pure voices, and the chorus just swells with harmonies. This is choir music for people who hate choir music.
Pure Crystal.......2006-02-20
Like Luminosa, this is incredible. I can only compare it to the beautiful, pristine, classical pieces of antiquity, such as Vivaldi's Spring and Bach's many ethereal melodies. It's beautiful.

Replacement.......2002-04-03
Years ago while I was overseas in the army I bought this tape and have enjoyed it very much. The tape has become old and worn and since I now have a computer the that plays CDs, personal CD player, CD player in my truck, and etc. I bought it on CD so I can continue to enjoy it for years to come. Don't be fooled this CD can be enjoyed by any and everybody of all ages. I am 35 yrs. old but I also own CDs by Britney Spears, NSYNC, CCR, Backstreet Boys, the Eagles, B.B. King, Christina Aguilera, and many others and I enjoy all of them. If you enjoy the samples you well enjoy the whole album.
What became of Ellie May? Did she enter a convent?.......2001-01-25
Columbia has released a series of CDs paying tribute to the Country Classics, volume 3 of which is entitled AMERICANA and contains twenty-five so called "saga songs", i.e. numbers which put to music stories of good vs. adversity.
This disk features a veritable posse of legendary artists. Johnny Cash is the most represented ("Don't Take Your Guns to Town", "Tennessee Flat Top Box", "A Boy Named Sue", "Highwayman" - the last with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson). Others with more than one track are Marty Robbins ("Big Iron", "El Paso"), Hawkshaw Hawkins ("Twenty Miles from Shore", "Soldier's Joy"), and Stonewall Jackson ("Life to Go", "Waterloo").
Then, there are my favorites:
"The Ballad of Davy Crockett" (Fess Parker) makes me yearn for the coonskin cap I had as a kid. It'd look mighty fine at the big management meeting. (Actually, I think it was rabbit fur.) I'd probably run afoul of PETA, though. And who needs that hassle?
"Big Bad John" (Jimmy Dean) reminds me of the hero I once aspired to be. Unfortunately, real, everyday life is pretty much mundane. Besides, there are no mines locally, and sewer work doesn't have quite the same cachet.
Even though I love just about everything British (except Lemon Shandy), "The Battle of New Orleans" (Johnny Horton) is a real toe-tapper. Makes me want to dump tea into Los Angeles harbor. In your eye, Tony!
The next time I have to pay my IRS taxes, perhaps playing for them "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose" ("Little" Jimmy Dickens) would get a more warm `n' fuzzy response. Hmm ... maybe not.
Lastly, "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" (Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys) brings to mind Ellie May sunbathing out by the CEEment Pond. Let's dwell on that vision for a long moment. Dang, Uncle Jed! (If you haven't a clue as to what I'm blathering on about here, then forget it, as you're too young to appreciate this CD anyway.)
My only regret concerning this collection of down-home favorites is that the catchy theme from "Green Acres" isn't included. Pity. I was hoping to sing along.
The Absolute best!.......2000-10-25
A must have for all true country music fans. It has the ballads and songs of the best bygone era in country music. Buy this and enjoy!
Oh, the memories!.......2000-06-29
I stumbled over this CD while looking for something with "Long Black Veil" on it. What a gold mine I found with all these mostly country oldies plus a few newer ones! About all that is missing is "Summer Wine" and "Miller's Cave." Even to my tin ears, the sound is great; and I certainly enjoy listening to the original recordings rather than someone else's.
