Rights problems kept many Gershwin soundtrack recordings from public release, but this collection makes up for lost time. It is a comprehensive trove of tunes, drawn from several Hollywood studios, including MGM, RKO, and Warner Bros. Among the roster's stars: Fred Astaire ("A Foggy Day"), Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney ("I Got Rhythm"), Al Jolson ("Swanee"), Gene Kelly ("Love Is Here to Stay"), and Ginger Rogers ("They All Laughed"). Added are the instrumental talents of Warner Bros. musical director Ray Heindorf ("Overture" from Rhapsody in Blue) and "Fascinating Rhythm" by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra (with a piano solo by Rooney!). Sonic flaws result from some tracks having to be retrieved from old acetate playback discs, but this is still a fine commemorative souvenir for Gershwin fans. --Joseph Lanza
Customer Reviews:
Great Collection.......2002-03-07
A great facet of Gershwin music, and a great set of some songs that are difficult to find on Gershwin collections (Liza, Stairway to Paradise). This set is very different from other classical, jazz, and Broadway style Gershwin collections. The recordings are from the movies they were used in and are sort-of one-dimensional since they were performed by actors to advance the plot, as compared to a Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, or even a Frank Sinatra interpretation that is performed for the song's sake alone. However, these movie songs were a vital part of Gershwin versatility, and are a pleasure to listen to. In all, a great value and must for a Gershwin fan.
Just a great collection of Gershwin songs!!!.......1998-10-16
If you are an old movie fan you will love this cd.You can almost see Fred and Ginger dancing. Just great!!!!
