Benny Goodman alum Peggy Lee followed up her monster 1947 solo hit "Mañana (Is Soon Enough for Me)" with 1960's Latin ala Lee, a collection of Broadway standards set to light Afro-Cuban beats. Jack Marshall arranged and conducted the uncredited Los Angeles orchestra, which provides driving percussion, chirping flutes, and occasional backup vocals to this extremely listenable if somewhat polite affair. The 36-minute CD includes original and new liner notes, the LP's 12 original cuts, and 3 bonus tracks, including the Lee-penned "Olé" from a follow-up album Olé ala Lee, and the obligatory "Mañana." --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Peggy with a touch of Latin.......2003-05-31

These two albums were recorded in 1960 and feature Peggy singing to a Latin-styled musical backing. Despite the music, Peggy sings the same way she always did, and the songs selected here are also typical although the second album on this twofer contains some Latin songs - Fantastico, Non dimenticar and Ole..

Many of the songs will therefore be familiar to fans of the Great American Songbook and Broadway show tunes, right from the opening Heart (if that title doesn't mean anything, you may remember the chorus line You gotta have heart). On the street where you live, Surrey with the fringe on top, Hey there, I could have danced all night, The party's over, I enjoy being a girl, Come dance with me, Love and marriage, You stepped out of a dream - these are just some of the classic songs here. Peggy's covers are always distinctive, but the Latin style makes them even more so.

Two bonus tracks - Till there was you (which has never sounded better than when sung here by Peggy) and Together wherever we go - make this even more desirable than it would have been anyway.

These albums, while typical in many ways of Peggy's music, are distinctive simply because of the Latin style. For that reason, this twofer is one of the most important among the many released.

"Reviewer: marrano
"What "Hairspray" is to John Waters, "Latin ala Lee" is to Peggy Lee. It is a masterpiece of mid-century camp, with groovy and sometimes frantic Afro-Cuban and Latin arrangements of familiar Broadway tunes, topped by the light and inimitably breathy phrasing of Miss Peggy Lee. Some of the songs are just so far out there -- like the "cha cha" version of "Surrey With the Fringe on Top" -- that you can't imagine how she could get away with it."

With all due respect to a fellow music lover and fan of Miss Peggy Lee, I beg to differ with your view that this album is "camp." I am passionate about music and when these albums (both I and II) were cut, Latin music was all the rage, -- from Sergio Mendes to the Ray Conniff Latin-themed albums. I remember the era well. It was before rock and roll and my beloved Rolling Stones. Other albums I purchased around this time and still play from time to time include several top jazz albums with Latin themes by performers such as Zaviar Cugat, Ahmad Jamal, and many, nany others -- if I were at home and had access to my collection I could list them for you.

So calling this album camp is a disservice to Peggy Lee and everyone who contributed to these albums. These songs never sounded better and I have heard the Broadway cast versions of almost all of them. What Peggy Lee did to these show tunes was liven them up and make them infinitely more romantic and listenable.

I bet you are young -- you kids are great but you know nothing.
Nothing.

What "Hairspray" is to John Waters, "Latin ala Lee" is to Peggy Lee. Some of the songs are just so far out there -- like the "cha cha" version of "Surrey With the Fringe on Top" -- that you can't imagine how she could get away with it. And yet she did, and still does, because every track is still remarkably fresh after nearly four decades. This is a combined album, actually -- "Latin Ala Lee" has been reissued with "Ole Ala Lee", and since the sequel is almost as good, this is a terrific bargain purchase.

One fun fact: the Beatles loved this album, and their version of "Till There Was You", which I think is on the Meet the Beatles LP, was directly inspired by Peggy Lee's version. If it was good enough for them, it's good enough for you. You can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever made...great tunes.......1999-10-13

I bought the vinyl version in the early '60s (mere child then) and still listen to it all the time. Still stands up -- never tire of it. So happy to see it's on CD so I can play it in my car. Best Peggy Lee album ever because every song is great -- the best show tunes ever written, sung by Peggy Lee with a Latin beat, Latin arrangements. Infectious, makes you happy to listen...makes you want to sing, dance, perform...chases the blues away. Can't stand songs I don't like (Fever, Is That All There Is) even sung by my favorite singers, so this is that great rarity -- a perfect album, with no clunky or draggy or depressing tunes. Absolutly one of the best albums ever recorded by anyone at any time. Swear to God.

5 out of 5 stars Latin ala Lee! Don't wait until "Mañana" to buy this !!!.......2006-07-08

Peggy Lee was one of the first great singers of the 20th century to seriously integrate a Latin beat into her music; and this CD proves that she was very successful with it!

The CD starts off with the beautifully arranged "Heart (From Damn Yankees)." Another particularly striking song is "Til There Was You (From The Music Man)" although "On The Street Where You Live (From My Fair Lady)" and "Hey There (From The Pajama Game)" are also simply beautiful. These songs and all the others have a wonderful Latin beat integrated into the musical arrangement which lends a certain elegance to them that I simply haven't heard before.

This collection of songs was originally released as a record album in 1959 with show tunes from the great Broadway plays of the day; but a really nice plus comes our way with the addition of three bonus tracks at the end: "From Now On," "Ole" and "Sweet Happy Life." Bravo, Peggy!

The remastering of these terrific songs with that classy Latin late 1950s/early 1960s beat is by Steve Hoffman and Cy Godfrey. You would never guess these recordings were made several decades ago; there is virtually no surface noise, for example.

The liner notes boast an essay by Will Friedwald and offer wonderful copies of both the front and reverse covers of the original record album. The front cover is great--so well done, in fact, that this album won a Grammy for "album cover of the year" in 1960. Unfortunately, because the CD liner notes are on small sized paper the copy of the reverse of the record album is in rather small print but it is still legible. Nice graphics, too!

I guess my only disappointment was the omission of a song that is a personal favorite of mine entitled "Mañana." However, this is an album of Broadway hit songs originally recorded in 1959. "Mañana" was certainly not Broadway and it certainly wasn't from that era, either. Just a personal note.

I highly recommend this CD for Peggy's fans (obviously), fans of classic pop vocals and fans of that Afro-Cuban beat from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Terrific work, Peggy!

This is one of the finest albums/CDs ever produced. But I have the ORIGINAL vinyl recordings (which I still play -- I take great care of my collection)and "Sanza Fine" was not on either album originally. I am sure it is great, but it was added later. But thanks for the info, Mr. Paradise. Guess I'll have to get the single to hear it.

"SANZA FINE is the gem of this album, September 17, 2000
Reviewer: John G. Paradise (see more about me) from Guilford, Connecticut
Every song on this album is great but Senza Fine is the best track, in my opinion, and it is not available on the album that combines "LATIN ALA LEE" AND "OLE LEE." Please make note of this. Thought the two albums are combined this song: SANZA FINE, is not on the combination of the two albums."

5 out of 5 stars SANZA FINE is the gem of this album.......2000-09-18

Every song on this album is great but Senza Fine is the best track, in my opinion, and it is not available on the album that combines "LATIN ALA LEE" AND "OLE LEE." Please make note of this. Thought the two albums are combined this song: SANZA FINE, is not on the combination of the two albums. You might want to consider this carefully before you buy the double album. You may find that the Latin ala Lee is the better of the two even though It has less tunes. Those who have bought the double album may be compelled to go back and get the latter just for that one tune..Sanza Fine!! Remember, it is a gem and worth the price of the album! If you are a Lee fanatic you may have to have both....but I chose just the one.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Peggy Lee's BEST albums.......2000-03-28

Having been born in the mid-50s, I literally grew up listening to thisalbum. In fact my mom had to replace it after playing the groovesoff. No matter how many times you hear it, though, you'll never tire of it. You can tell Peggy truly enjoyed recording this, every song is sensational. This is the kind of music to put on whether you just get home from work & kick your shoes off or have some friends over for a relaxing evening. Highly recommended! END

5 out of 5 stars Latin ala Lee.......2000-03-14

If you like Ella Fitzgerald and her "Songbook" series You will LOVE Latin ala Lee. Miss Lee sings many popular show tunes from the 50s and 60s in saucy salsa style. The vocals are clear and clean in a wonderfully digital re-mastered CD version. This CD is a must have If you are a Peggy Lee or Ella Fitzgerald Fan. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars absolutley one of peggy's best recordings..........2000-03-11

aside from "black coffe with peggy lee(decca)" latin ala lee is her best lp, reisuue on cd. This cd reissues the origional lp with orig. cover. The music is authentic afro-cuban jazz(in the cal djader manner) it swings and lee is ala latin. This is wonderful stuff, her fans back in the late 50's must have thought she was crazy, however jazz and jazz vocal lovers will enjoy this gem.

Note: Also highly recommeded on the verve label is Anita O'Day "Time For Two" with cal Tjader's jazz combo for some real afro cuban-jazz singing.
