Party Jazz

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The emphasis here is on spirited, upbeat, organ combos, right at the intersection of jazz and early rhythm and blues. Willis "Gator" Jackson, king of the 1950s bar-walking tenor saxophonists, sets the tone and the standard for what follows--booting, muscular, exuberant music. He's matched by the gruff swing of fellow tenor player Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and a host of funky organists such as Jack McDuff and Charles Earland. The tunes include some R&B classics (such as guitarist Grant Green's take on "High Heeled Sneakers") and a few raw-boned blues, as well as a wailing treatment of the nursery tune "Three Blind Mice." Tenor saxophonist Houston Person's soulful "Late Night Lullaby" is a perfect tune to close an evening. --Adam Rains

5 out of 5 stars Great but why buy...........2007-07-16

This is a great CD but why buy it at such high prices when you can download it for $9.99 at itunes?

Shirley is incredible on this CD. There's no one like her.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN I THOUGHT.......2007-07-15

When I first learned that Shirley was releasing yet another remix album, I was disappointed, as I was hoping for an album of all new material. But I was pleasantly surprised. The entire album is very enjoyable, and the two new songs, Get The Party Started and The Living Tree, is some of her best work. At 70, her voice is still amazing and a joy to listen to. I would have rated this album 5 stars if it contained all new material. To this day, Dame Shirley Bassey rocks my world!!!!

5 out of 5 stars DAME SHIRLEY DOES IT AGAIN!!.......2007-07-11

The CD is out at long last...the party has started! Dame Shirley Bassey shines as always! She is a world treasure! A MUST buy CD.

5 out of 5 stars SO MUCH FUN!!!.......2007-07-09

This is a fun one...lots of great remixes, stunning new vocals from a lady who show no signs of slowing down. "Living Tree" is powerful, "Party" is great fun. Nobody does it like the Dame!

5 out of 5 stars Majestic!!.......2007-07-09

Welsh/Nigerian songstress, Dame Shirley Bassey, returns with an album of classics with a contemporary twist. Produced by a slew of cutting edge producers and remixers like Bugz in the attic, and North by northwest, the project was driven by the Dame herself.

Best known by some for the Bond theme songs she sang; "Diamonds are forever", "Goldfinger". And "Moonraker", the 13 songs on this collection are heavily influenced by that. The album has already given Dame Shirley Bassey her first UK top 10 album in some decades and deservedly so.

"The living tree" is arguably the best Bond record that never was, with it's Trip Hop feel; a brooding sound, sweeping dramatic strings and explosive vocal delivery (her voice is as booming as ever - she doesn't do things by halves) from the seventy year old Dame. Similar is the self assertive "This is my life".

Lionel Richie's "Hello" is given a haunting, atmospheric treatment. Nicole's dad would be proud of the result. The lightly horn sprinkled "Can I touch you there" (the Michael Bolton song) is similarly transformed (lovely percussion and nice male harmonies).

"I who have nothing" is given a slight dub feel, while "I will survive" is transformed by epic sounding strings and skittery percussion. "What now my love" has a slight salsa feel. "You only live twice" (originally done by Nancy Sinatra) is covered superbly here, downplaying the Bond feel, and giving it a light Cuban feel.

"Where is the love" is given the disco treatment (superb sax outro, by the way), similar to her "Moonraker" hit, and her old hit "Big spender" starts off startingly like Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" in its new incarnation.

The title track is a rousing reworking of Pink's "Get the party started" with dramatic strings, and crisp enunciation from the Dame.

It is amazing to see a veteran like Dame Shirley Bassey still sounding cutting edge and not resting on her laurels. If you like your music bland and safe, this might not be for you.

Her other album of remixes, "Diamonds are forever: the remix album" is also worth checking out. "Get the party started" is a wonderful aural experience!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

With each successive album, Medeski Martin & Wood have become harder to pin down. Having long ago transcended their soulful organ-groove basics to enter a more expansive world of snappy beats and backbeats, eerie atmospheric effects, post-lounge riffing, and the occasional jazz overture, they occupy their own category. Produced by the Dust Brothers' John King (Beck's Odelay, the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique), End of the World Party (Just in Case) is an agreeably varied effort, ranging from the spacey effects and Middle Eastern taint of "Bloody Oil" (on which bassist Chris Wood lays down the lumber) to the sassy electric funk of "Sasa" (one of four tracks featuring guitarist Marc Ribot) to the wordless voice effects of the jaunty title track. As ever, John Medeski is equally at home referencing post-bop piano aces like Herbie Hancock, getting down on churning Hammond organ, and making like Stevie Wonder with his "Superstition"-style synth. Unlike some MMW records, this one wastes not: all 12 tracks clock in at around the four- or five-minute mark, and they flow together with consummate ease. --Lloyd Sachs

3 out of 5 stars Funky atmospheric jazz.......2007-04-17

Having heard snippets of M&WM before I was intrigued by their sound but not enough to shell out for a disc. I came across a used copy at the local thrift shop(usually not a good sign)and bought a copy at the reduced price. Someone discarded it for a reason I thought but I couldn't resist being the audio junkie that I am. It took me several listens to warm up tho the music, mostly because of the spacey nature of the disc. The spacey atmospherics are enticing and inviting , the music teases and hints at what could be but unfortuantely doesn't quite fully deliver. The songs give you the feeling of being on a desolate landscape where suddenly urban groovesters appear. Take a listen to "New Planet" and you'll get my drift. The keyboards of John Medeski are enough to hook you in, sometimes jazzy, sometimes funky but always pulling you in. Richard "Groove" Holmes or Jimmy Smith he's not but then again who is? The title track, " End of the World Party" is a funky mix of jazz that projects gloom and happiness at once. I think that is part of what I don't like much about this disc, it has a sad lack luster appeal. "Ice" creates a nice balance between jazz and funk reminiscent of Herbie Hancock back in the day. The songs are sometimes outright jazz like on the excellent "Mami Gato," unfortuantely their are not enough songs like this as they spend most of their time trying to create a new niche in the jazz idiom. One of the best tracks that mixes elements of electronica, atmospheric jazz and funk is "Midnight Poppies/ Crooked birds" that has a bit of a Latin groove mixed in for good measure. If you like atmospheric jazz that is out there you might like this disc. For my tastes it just doesn't quite deliver but rather promises with moments or songs that have more than just a hook. If you like funky-atmospheric-jazz than this will be for you. However if you like traditional jazz you might stay away from this one. Not a great disc but it does promise enough to maybe keep an eye on their future development on future discs. In the end I would give this a 3.5 for taking the old and trying to create something new.

5 out of 5 stars Trippy.......2006-12-12

I bought this CD before going to see MMW (with John Scofield) for the first time at First Avenue in Minneapolis Dec 7, 2006. I had never heard of them before and liked the clip on the venue's website. So I bought a ticket and wanted to get "Out Louder", which I knew they were going to play, to familiarize myself, but the store I was at was out of it. So I bought "End of the World" instead. While some of it was a little too spacey for my liking at first, I still liked the overall funkiness of it all.

THEN....I saw them PLAY. You MUST see them PLAY!! I didn't ever want it to end! I immediately wanted to see them again! It's less than a week later and I have 2 more CD's ("Out Louder" and Scofield's "A-Go-Go" which they "back" him on) and 4 more on the way from amazon as I'm writing this. I'm like an ADDICT now! I HAVE to have them on in the car and in the house. I get back in the car after having been in a store or whatever and they're on and all is right with my world again.

I must say I like "Out Louder" and even "A-Go-Go" better than "End of the World", but only slightly. It IS trippy with the synth and the other guest players, and I do like it better after a few listens. I just prefer MMW with less guest musicians.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Chill Music.......2006-07-04

This is possibly one of the greatest cd's to turn on and enjoy the music while studying or just having friends over. I thoroughly enjoy this album.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2006-05-10

Very interesting, a bit of a departure from the other albums they have. It is getting hard to put a label on their music, but thats what makes it so good. I have not purchased any new music for quit a while, so last week I picked up several albums this being one of them, along with Spicehouse and Zero7. I must say I love this CD, I have been playing every day in the car. The sound quality is fantastic, especially in headphones. This New York band has always been experimenting and building on their sound. I think they have come to a peak on this one. One thing is for sure, the musicianship is always top notch on all their albums, this is no exception. They have a more modern sound here Kind of Hip Hop - Trip Hop, whatever, but it sounds great. This album starts off with the strange "Anonymous skulls" and then moves into the great title track. The rest of the album seems to move in and out of trippy groves, experimental jazz and some interesting electronica. Some of my friends who are great people, but can't get out of their tiny musical worlds actually like this when I play it. It is nice to hear some fresh new music.

5 out of 5 stars Every album just gets better.......2006-03-09

MMW are a band that I feel epitomizes what a band should do: Get better with each album. This installment into their already stellar catalogue is one of great proportion. I saw MMW live twice during their tour for this album, one of which was at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC (one of my favorite venues of all time), and the performance combined with the infectious grooves made me dance like I've never danced before. All three do a fantastic job of not overplaying just to impress. Medeski probably overplays some live, but Chris Wood on bass is too expressive to just capture on disc. At any rate, this album has my vote for #1 MMW album so far, and I own them all. As an additional note, to get the true effect of this trio, see them live. Billy Martin is right up there with Duduka da Fonseca as far as best trap players in the entirety of Western music, and you only get to see just how excellent he is when he plays live. During an intermission at one show, it was just him on stage while the other M and the W took a break. His improv solo playing is just as musical as anything with tonal character. Alright, that's the end of the rambling. Buy this album!

This 16-track compilation demonstrates a sense of humor--or an awareness of its own cheese factor--by sandwiching "Lambada" between the Gipsy Kings' "Bamboleo" and the Bayside Boys remix of Los Del Rio's "Macarena." The spirit of fun keeps this otherwise hopelessly diffuse set from falling apart while dancing between the flamenco guitars of Carlinhos Brown's "A Namorada," a house remix of "Oye Como Va," and Quincy Jones's Austin Powers fave "Soul Bossa Nova." Those willing to let go will have hit the dance floor long before Beck ends the bash with "Burro," his suavecito mariachi version of "Jack-Ass." --Rickey Wright

3 out of 5 stars Good spread of popular Latin songs.......2005-09-01

If you're one of those Latin song buffs, you might want to check this album out. It has a wide spread of Latin songs ranging from "La Bamba" to "Mas Que Nada". A good mix of ever popular songs and forgotten one.

4 out of 5 stars First Nine Songs Are Cool, Rest Are Boring.......2003-07-31

I'm pretty happy with this CD. I think the first nine songs are pretty cool and enjoy dancing to most of them. These first nine tracks have very upbeat rythms. However, the rest of the songs are older and more boring. Perhaps it's just because I'm young, but I find myself skipping through those last several tracks. To be honest, if the last 7 tracks weren't as boring, I'd give this CD a higher rating.

I think it's cool that this CD has the Austin Powers theme song (track 9, "Soula Bossa Nova") on it. Yeah baby!

1 out of 5 stars Don't be sucked in by the title!.......2002-12-02

This is not a PARTY album. That would be a collection of songs that make people want to feel festive, get up and dance, or otherwise celebrate. What this album is is a collection of popular to semi popular to rarely heard of "latin" tunes. Very few will make you want to get up and dance, or party much at all. Although there are some decent artists mixed in, the album, taken as a whole, is a yawn. This is not the "best party album in the world, ever", not even a FAIR party album. There's WAY better music out there for a party!

4 out of 5 stars Fun stuff..........2002-03-08

I originally bought the CD for Beck's "Burro," which is the Mariachi version of "Jackass." The track is excellent... it's worth the price of the entire CD. The rest of the tunes are just an added bonus (except the annoying "Hot, Hot, Hot"). The CD is perfect for spicing up any party, whether on the dance floor, or simply as background music.

1 out of 5 stars altered art=kaka.......2001-10-15

The changes to the original artists' work on this album cause significant loss to the music quality. What a disappointment!

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Must-Have Favorite.......2006-12-20

Until Recently, Bobby Shew's "Caliente" was my favorite Latin Jazz CD. The day I found "Ultimate Latin Dance Party" Bobby moved to second place. This is absolutely the best high energy Latin Jazz CD I've found so far. If you are a new comer, like myself, to this genre you will love this great collection. If you grew up on the Classic Latin Standards, you should find this to be a good collection worthy of a nod from the masters from your youth.

I prefer to mostly hear the instruments and Poncho's band does not dissapoint. Each instrument gets plenty of solo time and is played with such a fervor it'll set your speakers on fire. The vocals are not so overbearing, and to leave them out would be a betrayal to the birthplaces of the songs. It all comes together so nicely you'll be working up a sweat by the third song.

In the end, this collection is garaunteed to get your hands and feet tapping, and may lead to fits of jubilant, hip-swinging dancing. From beginning to end, every song is a treat with its own flavor. If you want to jump start your Latin Collection, Poncho has created the collection to do it.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, good salsa jazz.......2003-08-03

This is really a greatest hits album, with the highlights being "Watermelon Man" and "Soul Sauce". The songs are otherwise pretty evenly groovy, although I'm not as crazy about the songs with vocals. The Pancho Sanchez sound is competant jazz playing, salsa beat, and of course Pancho's congos. It's catchy and enjoyable, and you don't have to dance to it to like it.

5 out of 5 stars Poncho Sanchez Ultimate Dance Party.......2002-11-06

This mixture of music lives up to it's labeled promise and lures you to the dance floor.

5 out of 5 stars Poncho Sanchez Ultimate Dance party.......2002-11-06

Superb mixture of classic dance salsa and listening tunes. Bringing back the sounds of Tito Puente in medley adds to the albums promise and lure of keeping dancers on the dance floor.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recordings with a twist.......2006-08-03

This CD is full of jazz in spite of the fact that I have associated most of the performers with classical music. This shows the diversity in their ability to perform a wide array of music that I never heard in the past from them.

If you like jazz without too much dissonance, this is a great CD to purchase. The interesting and awkward rhythms are the best parts of this CD.

You can have your own party just from listening to this music.

5 out of 5 stars Bolling holds a swinging party & I won't leave.......2001-04-29

I had this CD around and was going to put it up for sale via Amazon Marketplace. I listen to other Bolling CDs. But, somehow I had "missed" the jivvy jazz in this recording.

As the sounds of "Baroque and Blue," 5:15, Track 1 started playing, the thoughts of selling the CD disappeared.

Bolling plays the piano superbly and Maurice Andre's trumpet radiates pure jazz notes. This is a clasical jazz CD. The 12 tracks tie together like movements of a symphony and there is a bewitching common theme, best heard in track 7 "Mystique." After Andre and Bolling swing in #7, track 8 "Canon," emerges with Jean Pierre Rampal's flute, golden. Guy Pedersen's string bass is crisp and Daniel Humair plays the drums with unhearlded pizzaz. And, how can one overlook the strumming of guitarist Alexandre Lagoya?

This is one of the best jazz or instrumental CDs I have ever heard. I normally listen while writing and use the sounds as background music. Lagoya's contribution to #9, Tendre, matching Rampal's clarity is mystical. So, I am enjoying each note and marveling at the classical synergy displayed.

The cover notes cite "recipes from Martha Stewart's "Entertaining" and her other best-selling books on food and lifestyle." Sure enough, Martha has a menu: 1. Cocktails & Sparkling Water...the CD's sounds sparkle. 2. Crudites with Anchovy Mayonnaise, complete with the recipe. 3. Chicken on Skewers, also including what to use & how. 4. Prosciutto and Figs: Anyone can lay this dish out. 5. Cornmeal-Fried Oysters: The recipe is for 2 dozen.

So, a person can buy this album (just) to get great recipes for dishes to accompany superb jazz. The recipes are simple to follow and delicious to read. One can buy the CD for the delightful cocktails that Bolling presents. But here "one = two." Or, to put this in other words "With two you get eggroll." The eggroll is the delightful dish one savors listening to the music while nibbling on the chicken & oysters. Magnifique!

3 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

1 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

5 out of 5 stars A comparison to his other works.......2005-09-01

This is project was recorded well after his Mercury and Atlantic sessions. (said by many to be the definitive Fess)
Yet to be published are his works on Ron an obscur label from the 60s. Those 45s are hot if you can find them. This work is leading up to Crawfish Fiesta (his last work) This one is by far his most energetic work from this era. It makes Crawfish sound a little stiff in comparison. The band is loose and the drummer is insane. For a good Fess session it's all about who is on drums. This one tops the second disc on the Rhino collection which sounds like an afterthought. And this is way more energetic than the stiff british audience on the Queen Mary disc.

I was in a music store when "Cherry Pie" came on--I have never been so blown away by music in the air and immediately bought the album. I have played it hundreds of times since. I have heard many other Longhair recordings and while they are all great too, this one has a special magic to it, a compelling vibe which makes it an all time classic.

    5 out of 5 stars Frighteningly Good.......2007-01-11

All of Scott's "blues" albums are monstrous displays of talent. Blues is in quotes because his playing can shift instantly from blues to rock to jazz so these are not quite classic blues albums, but trust me, if you're a blues fan and a guitar fan, you owe it to yourself to pick his solo CDs up. He's clearly one of the best players out there. At times the songs can be a bit too cute, but this guy is so good I can easily overlook that.

5 out of 5 stars Great "alternative" blues Cd.......2005-08-24

Henderson steps outside of the framework of your basic I-IV-V blues progression and displays a harmonic vocabulary that you would have to search far and wide to equal. His tone is great, his phrasing is great. Though purists may not like it as much you can still hear the SRV-ish licks (and even some direct rip-offs too) but he employs them in a fashion that is complimentary rather than offensive.
Throw in some silly lyrics and it's just a real enjoyable time to listen to this CD.
Henderson is a monster in so many ways, namely fusion, but in a sea of overworked and regurgatated blues players I'd say this one shines above most others too.

    5 out of 5 stars A musicians musician.......2004-12-09

Although the theme of this entire Cd is flipantly dedicated to Dogs there is nothing funny about his technique and taste when ti comes to playing the guitar. Scott is well known in Jazz circles playing with Chick Corea and as a co-founder of Tribal Tech, his successful venture into the Blues/Rock realm is a pleasant surprise. As a guitar player myself for 30+ years all I can say Scott, you're my hero.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked Guitar Player!.......2004-07-16

Wow!! This is the first Scott Henderson CD I have ever heard. I suspect that mostly guitar players buy this CD. If you like Stevie Ray Vaughan, you'll love this guy. As another reviewer said, he seems to handle SRV's style with ease and he has an SRV-esque tone that is die for (I'm a guitar player too!). The lyrics are quite funny too. I'm going to finish this now so that I can order some more Scott Henderson CDs.

5 out of 5 stars BARKIN' UP THE BLUES !.......2001-11-14

This is Henderson's first album from 1994. I can see why this cd got so many rave reviews after it came out. It's filled with more than enough killer hooks and mind-blowing guitar work to fill any void left by Stevie Ray. But like most all blues rock albums I listen to nowadays, I often tend to focus more on the music and overlook the lyrics. Because after all, most modern day blues artists like to keep it simple when it comes to adding those cumberson words to their music. But this one isn't that typical "my baby left me and I lost my job" type of blues album. First of all, as you might have deduced from the title, this cd deals with dogs. That's right, all the music here refers to the trials and tribulations of a typical day in the life of a dog. But if you listen a little closer, you'll see that all those animal instincts and nasty habits that you're average canine tends to have without apology, can also be applied to humans. Henderson cross-references this stuff in such a clever way that I couldn't help but laugh from seeing myself and some of my doggy tendencies in some of these songs. But, getting back to the music: From the first tune on, this cd will grab you by the lobes of your ears and suck you right in. The opener "Hole Diggin" is an instrumental played at a fast and furious pace with a lot of SRV style to it. After this it only gets better with the slow burnin' "Fence Climbin' Blues". Man, I can't emphasize enough how good a player Henderson is. He's got about 3 minutes of solo guitar work in this song that left me sittin' with my headphones on and my jaw locked on open. Technically, with his jazz background and all, there may not be a better guitar player playing today. And I'm not overstating the fact. I've had this cd for a while, and it never ceases to amaze me. As for the rest of the music, you get the idea, it's all good. And he even does a finger snappin' cover of "Hound Dog" that's enough to make any dog do a 4 paw strut across the floor. The only thing else I can say is get your grubby claws on this and don't let go. "Dog Party" definitly gets an enthusiastic 5 barks up.
