Evidence that one can make a musical about anything, Exhibit A: 1776. As one might expect, the whole concept of making a musical about the creation and signing of the Declaration of Independence was greeted in the late 1960s with, well, ridicule. The show debuted on Broadway in 1969, and three years later, when its run finally ended, it was its producers who had the last laugh. In addition, it toured for an additional two years and beat out Hair (in 1969 yet!) for a Tony Award. This recording, with the original Broadway cast, includes many of the same actors who went on to star in the film, the version with which most audiences today are probably familiar. One notable exception is Rex Everhart, who replaced Howard da Silva at some performances and on this recording. But there's still William Daniels as John Adams, though in some cases his performance is more subdued than it was on film. Musically, 1776 is an odd creation, considering when it came into being. As one might expect, there's a lot of fife and drum going on, especially in the opening number and during "The Lees of Old Virginia." For those less than familiar with the plot, it hinges on the idealism of Adams, who's trying his best to back up the American Revolution with some legislative action, and spends much of his time arguing with either the Continental Congress or God, as in "Piddle, Twiddle, and Resolve": "A second flood, a simple famine / Plagues of locusts everywhere / Or a cataclysmic earthquake / I'd accept with some despair / But no, you sent us Congress / Good God, sir, was that fair?" (One could argue that he gets further with God.) While not entirely historically accurate, and containing some rather peculiar numbers (Franklin, Jefferson, and Adams sitting around debating what their new country's national bird is going to be ranks among the oddest), there's no questioning 1776's staying power. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Before Sondheim's COMPANY and after MAN OF LA MANCHA..........2007-04-30
For me, 1776 is a great companion to MAN OF LA MANCHA as one of the most entertaining AND intellectually worthy amalgams of music, lyrics, book, theme, plot, characterizations and dialogue to ever come out of pre-1970's Broadway musical theatre. Each song is like a little gem, and displays the broad range of emotions and ideas with which 1776 brims. Satiric, romantic, hilarious, heartbreaking, disturbing, dark, inspiring, thoughtful, humane, and even a little bawdy, the songs glide and tromp all over the map, as does the show itself. As with LA MANCHA, 1776 broke open the Broadway musical, making it a pitch-perfect example of what can truly make a musical more than a toe-tapping time killer... while never becoming tedious, pompous, windy, or dull. If anything, it crackles with suspense.
And as to the reviewer who was shocked that it would win out over HAIR? Listen to "Mamma Look Sharp" or "Molasses to Rum to Slaves" to hear exactly the play's political and often-unflattering ideological landscape. This was definitely a Vietnam-era play whose content was as disturbingly pertinent, then, as it is, now. And, despite all of this, the score and play never become leaden or preachy. On the contrary, each performance is a gem, and each character is witty and unique. Who knew that history could be a passionate and fun adventure?
Overrated Tony Award Winner.......2006-06-16
How could this musical win the Tony award having as a competitor a play like HAIR which - for many people - stands as an emblematic theatre piece of the 60's? Who remembers a tune out of this musical? On the contrary, "Aquarius", "I Got Life" or "Walking in Space" are still popular and they play all over the world. Even ZORBA and PROMISES PROMISES - both candidates for the award in the same year - have songs that are still remembered. 1776 may wake up patriotic feelings to American listeners which is quite understandable but the music and songs are old-fashioned, overrated and awfully boring.
Brilliant, Definitive and Remarkably Accurate!.......2005-12-18
1776 has become an institution, thanks to the motion picture which was made of this original Broadway show, and which starred most of the cast from the theatrical production. It gets rerun every July 4th week on some movie channel or local station!
William Daniels IS John Adams to many people, and even though the story of the birth of the United States probably wasn't this lyrical and lively, Composer Sherman Edwards was historically accurate in the facts of the tale.
In addition to learning about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this is also love story... in fact two love stories, with John Adams and his wife Abigail, separated by circumstance and interacting only in his mind, and Thomas Jefferson and his wife, Martha, here, played by the big throated (and now legendary) Betty Buckley.
There is also a sense of fraternity, with the members of the Continental Congress grappling with the concept of breaking away from a tyranical ruler. And even though you know the outcome, the story is still filled with tension and excitement in the mechanics of it. Just how DID this country get formed?
The disc's liner notes explain the show's libretto and give you some rare behind-the-scenes info about the creation of the musical, the challenges it faced before becoming the standard that it now is, and a bit about the amazing Mr. Edwards, which is a story worthy of being told as well.
It's an Independence Day must!
Saw this on Broadway .......2005-11-12
Saw this show, with original cast, on Broadway in '69 and it has stayed with me ever since then. Every time I listen to these songs, I laugh. The historical figures (done with some tongue-in-cheek) are highly entertaining and even better if you see the movie. I would recommend the dvd for a great, lighthearted evening, and good family entertainment. You can't miss with this one! A winner on all fronts.
Quite a premise.......2005-07-20
Though it seems an odd choice to write a musical about, it works well. The whole thing seems a bit dated now, it still has great songs. Most dimpressive song, definately "Molasses to Rum". I gave it 4 stars for THAT song.

Irish Rock at its best.......2007-06-08
This album has it all. It is a necessary piece in any CD collection.
Genius.
I'm a canny gun man.......2007-04-18
Some music returns to you in the most unusual ways. I first heard the Pogues in college in 1985 and played this record, yes record, on my radio show 91.3 FM WKNH. While grieving for the loss of my closest friend from those days, I began a journey of reminiscing of those days, which included listening to bands....The Pogues, Jesus and Mary Chain, Jellyfish, The Posies, Thin Lizzy, Mott the Hoople, and The Clash.... we so often listened to and talked about with such passion. So, now, Dirty Old Town is playing and Shane's tales of death, drink, and dispair
are as poignant as ever. Great music is great in any era. Its evident that these songs came from a man struggling, partying, living, and dying in the moment. Great artists are like that. They feel something visceral and are able to capture it in some form. BUY THIS MUSIC.
Shane McGowan is a Genius.......2007-01-23
I love this album. Must have listened to it a thousand times. I can't get enough of Shane McGowan's voice - rough and masculine and filled with a dogged Irish faith in the face of self-inflicted Irish despair. The female voice on "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day" is hauntingly beautiful. God gave that particular ineffable quality only to the Daughters of Houlihan. If you like Irish music, you need this album. It's certainly been a big part of the soundtrack of my life since it came out over 20 years ago.

From someone who despises American musical theater.......2007-06-04
Okay... wow.
In the Brent Spiner Fangirl Legal Contract, it specifies that said fangirl must purchase any and all vocal recordings containing said Brent Spiner (and that she will not, in any way or at any time, mention how much he sounds like Judy Garland on steroids). Which is why I purchased this CD.
He... ripped... into... this... part. That's the only way I can put it. I was floored from start to finish.
The work, as a whole, is something of a consuming thing. Be prepared to sit in silence for a few minutes after you're done with this one, because after hearing the whole thing, silence will be the only followup that does it justice.
A Mans Show.......2006-07-24
For anyone looking for male songs, or a male show to put on, this is the soundtrack for you. It has great ballads as well as big chorus numbers for the male sex. However the subject matter just didnt grab me by the throat and make me love it. History isnt my thing. That being said, the music and lyrics are great, and worth the money. This is a good one to get if your interested in broadway, but not the Rodgers and Hamerstein style. My favorite songs are "Molasses to Rum" and "Momma Look Sharp."
Who knew Mr. Data had it in him?.......2006-07-05
I saw this musical in NYC and have never been so moved by a Broadway show before. Brent Spiner has a lovely yet commanding voice that makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck in parts - you so believe in the rightness of his convictions as Adams. All the performances are first rate, but Spiner really shines.
The argument can be made that this musical was "of its time" meaning the 1960's, but I think the songs still hold up as they entertain as well as educate us. Much of the lyrics and dialogue are authentic.
Highly recommended.
I Love It!.......2006-02-27
The soundtrack will make you laugh, cry and sing along. You'll have goosebumps as you hear the songs of the men and women involved in the creation of our country.
SURPRISINGLY TERRIFIC.......2006-02-23
As a PURIST fan of ORIGINAL musicals, and not one who enjoys all the revivals (which indicates a lack of current writers...no surprise), I was AMAZED at how GOOD this revival is on recording. I am sorry I missed the show in New York.

Customer Reviews:
Nearly perfect, but..........2007-06-03
"Rainy Night in Soho" is NOT the version on the "Poguetry in Motion" EP. It's an alternate mix with cheesy jazz trumpet. Why??? The original is SO much better. (Now you won't be unpleasantly surprised, like I was.)
Unique.......2006-10-07
The Pogues aren't great musicians. They're not great at rock and if you want great Irish music you'd be better off with Planxty, Patrick Street or Danu. But the Pogues are unique, entertaining, touching and influential.
I always thought this was their best album. It had the urban decadence, some good Irish folk, and the obligitory bloody battle songs. What it didn't have was an example of Shane's more tender poetry. Well, now it does. The bonus tracks kind of mess up the continuity of the CD but it's worth it to get "Rainy Night in Soho". I have never heard a better written, lovelier ballad. It's worth the price of the CD. Die hard Pogue fans will object, but it deserves a better singer. Mary McPartlin made a remarkable recording of it in 2005. The beauty of her voice accentuates the tenderness of the lyrics. Still, there is a magic to Shane's renditions of his masterpieces like "Rainy Night" or "Fairytale Of New York". He is a rare talent.
This is a great set of music. I highly recommend it but don't believe the fun and frolic reviews. Shane McGowan is the heart of the Pogues. He may be a poetic genius but he's a dissipated, drunken junkie. His songs in particular, and Irish songs in general, fluctuate between joy and despair. And, as I mentioned, in all Irish folk albums there will be at least two cuts in which people are blown up or hacked to pieces. In fact another benefit of the bonus tracks is ending the album with the classic "Parting Glass". The original closing cut was Shane's version of Waltzing Matilda. It's not the Aussie folk song but a powerfully written, thoroughly depressing recounting of the Battle of Gallipolli. When the original album ended the last thing on your mind was a round of darts and another pint.
In spite of the raucous "fun" of some of the cuts this isn't a party CD.
Not a Pogues fan yet??.......2006-08-29
Don't be nervous about buying this CD. It is an amazing listen. All the songs are crisp excellent quality full of fresh melodies. Some slowed pacers, fast pacers, good dancing fun. Old fan or new get Rum Sodomy & the Lash.
WOW!.......2006-07-30
I feel it is my duty as a good part Irish-American to go and write this while inebriated. The Pogues best album, and the best Celtic rock album of all time. Period. I'm too drunk to write anymore.
and it was all for a pair of brown eyes.......2006-05-20
Well here's a rock band you don't see everyday. Irish themed pop music. I like it. Every song on this album is great, and Elvis Costello produced it, the legend he is. You will feel great after hearing this record.

Album Description
We are excited to present our second studio album, Well-Oiled Machine. Most of the last two years of our life has been seen through the window of our vegetable-oil-powered bus or from the middle of a stage. What a wild, exuberant time it's been. This album is about that journey: the people who have joined it, the people who have left it, the sacrifice, the celebration! The album features sit-ins from Peter Rowan, Mike Marshall and Darol Anger.
Customer Reviews:
Enrich Your Soul!!.......2006-10-28
Regrettably I have only known of these guys for about a year now. In that time though, they have supplanted others such as String Cheese Incident as my current favorite band. If you've never heard of Hot Buttered Rum before, or are curious, don't delay in picking this up. These guys are truly amazing, both in instrumentation and vocals, with all five members singing. Their music will enrich your soul, and for some define you, as it does for me. I picked this album up at one of their shows in Cincinnati, and listened to it on loop the entire seven hour drive back to Buffalo. It is that good.
Firefly - written by Aaron, the fiddle (and sometimes mandolin) player, this is one of my favorite songs of theirs. I originally got into HBR because of their stunning instrumentation, but the vocals on this song cut through me right to my soul. Aaron writes some real deep lyrics, such as: "Often it's the case you find a stranger in a place living out the life you left behind. So wade into the streams that lead you to your dreams; fireflies will mark your way..... Well it's quite a pleasant site, you fireflies at night; illuminate my soul with your convictions. I think I'll close my eyes and up into the skies, thunder guide me down to the river."
Guns or Butter - written by Erik, the banjo/flute/accordion player, this is a powerful anti-war song that flows nicely. All five trade of nice solos throughout the song.
Idaho Pines - written by Zac, the mandolin (and sometimes fiddle) player, this song is so sad, yet so happy at the same time. It features stunning vocals by Zac, with his unique voice, such as: "Well lately I found new roads traveled. These ones aren't paved nor laid in gravel. Time won't stay still or stay the same. I guess I'll be my way. I must be on my way. To the cemetery sunrise on a brand new day." Erik does some great work with the flute on this song too. This song has a lot of Buddhist undertones too, speaking of impermanence, inevitable suffering, and reincarnation. Turn this song on, sit back and close your eyes, and be fulfilled.
Poison Oak - written by Nat, the guitar player, this is a song about environmental conservation. The band is very environmentally conscious, and this is a perfect example, as Nat sings of poison oak's revenge against those that cut down the redwood forests. They don't come off preachy at all though, and like in Idaho Pines, the song rings an essence of truth. The song features some stunning harmonies too.
Waterpocket Fold - written by Nat, this is a great six-minute instrumental. The polyphonic sound these guys create is second to none. I'm a big bluegrass/jamgrass/jam band fan, and I've never heard a group of players as talented as them.
Always Be The Moon - written by Aaron, this song is very slow and moving. Again, his profound lyrics shine here, as he sings of the absurdity of society with its constant fighting people engage in instead of taking care of their own. These guys are true bodhisattvas and it shows in their music.
Well-Oiled Machine - written by Nat, a very catchy, upbeat, and happy song. The band tours the country in a bus fueled by used cooking oil, and he sings about it here. You'll love the banjo work by Erik here, and appreciate the excellent harmonizing on this song.
Waiting For A Squall - written by Erik, who has a penchant for intense, somewhat uneasy songs, this song speaks of general discontentedness. He sings: I'm out here in my tiny boat just waiting for a squall. Well I'm trapped, my darlin', like a rabbit in a cage." The beat is fairly quick, as they trade off solos, and it features some good jamming in its six and a half minutes.
Butch & Peggy - written by Nat, this song will really touch you. Of course all the instrumentation on their songs is top-notch, as they are on this song, but the lyrics are what will really get to you. The song flows so well and makes you think of the happiness and fulfillment of being in love.
Sweet Honey Fountain - written by Zac, this is one of the best damn bluegrass songs you'll ever hear. Not only is the instrumentation amazing, the lyrics are great too. This is one of their most complete, unimpeachable songs. Zac has a love for the mountains, and it comes through on this song. One of my favorites!
Wedding Day - written by Erik, this has a real old time bluegrass sound to it. Very upbeat, it's a happy song about marriage and being in love. You can check this song out on their myspace page.
I hope this helps some of you out. I recommend this to all bluegrass, folk music, and jam band fans. If you're a fan Of String Cheese/YMSB/Railroad Earth/Grateful Dead/Leftover Salmon, you'll love these guys. This is the best band out there that you've never heard of. I know my review might sound like blind praise, but it's only because they are that good. I can't say enough about them, and have gotten many of my friends and family hooked on them. Like I said, they are true bodhisattvas, making great music and living life to the fullest.
Amazing! Buy it now if you value good music!.......2006-08-05
This is one hell of an album... Very relaxing and chilled out, perfect tunes to puff a giant spliff to if you're a bluegrass fan... And the flute adds such an amazing, unique touch to these guys music its indescribable. I love every song on this album, but some particular highlights for me are: Firefly, Idaho Pines, Well-Oiled Machine, Butch and Peggy, and Sweet Honey Fountain. I'll admit this album doens't have the energy of their live shows, it ain't no foot stompin yeehawin bluegrass album that makes you want to throw your hat up in the air while square-dancin so go see em live if that's what you're into, or just buy some YMSB or Bill Monroe.... Regardless of that this album is beautiful...... highly recommended.
3.2 stars.......2006-05-09
Seeing I cannot give a star rating in half incriments, I give it 3.2 stars (it's hard to get drunk on). The 1st few listens on this album, I guess I could say I was a bit let-down. Like most bands that thrive in the live setting, this band is no exception. They're live shows are somthing to be heard (and seen) due to the infectious energy they bring. This album is much more straight laced than thier live shows, but the more I listen, the more I like it for what it is, a relaxing, solid album of strong songs. This is a good album to just hang out to on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Butch & Peggy shows the potential of songwritting (and harmoizing)this band has. Obviously, the instumental proweress is pretty damn tight with every memeber. If you like blegrass (or new grass as many would call HBR), pick up this album; I don't think you'll be dissapointed. Go see them live if you ever get the chance!
well buttered band.......2006-04-29
These guys are the reeeeeeeaaaal deal. This cd is great from start to finnish. Every member of the band has a wonderful voice and are masters of their instruments. Buy there studio work, see them live, listen to this album while u butter up ur honey bun. You wont be dissapointed.
What a joy!!!.......2006-03-27
This is a band hitting their stride! This release is a BIG jump from their last (and only) studio release. Every song is played by musicians having FUN! Every song is strong. Retro, bluegrass, folk....kind of Leftover Salmon, kind of Blue Highway, kind of Mountain Heart, kind of Yonder Mountain String Band, kind of Cornmeal,......kind of FUN, FUN, FUN. By the way they include flute (not your typical bluegrass instrument) for some added character.

Album Description
Heather Myles' powerful vocals and clever songwriting-married with her love of the West Coast Bakersfield sound and traditional roots convention-recalls classic female country singers like Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, and Tammy Wynette. She proved with her debut album, Just Like Old Times, to be at the forefront of the alt-country scene that later blossomed into the Americana genre. In the past decade and today, Myles continues to carry the torch for traditional country artistry, having worked with such greats as Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, Waylon Jennings, and Charlie Daniels.

West Coast honkytonk was alive and well... in the 1990s.......2005-01-30
Of the recent spate of best-of collections coming out on the HighTone label, few could be more welcome than this set looking back at the early work of West Coast honkytonker Heather Myles. A California native heavily under the spell of Buck and Merle, Myles hit the SoCal country scene in the wake of Dwight Yoakam's back-to-basics breakthroughs, and recorded two fine albums for Hightone, 1992's "Just Like Old Times" and "Untamed," in 1995. This disc features a baker's dozen of her best songs, along with a previously unreleased version of "Read You All Wrong," with plenty of good, old-fashioned hard-country shuffles and heartsongs that stand right up there with the best of the old stuff. There's also a bit of her more jangly '60s rock-tinged material, and a brief dip into roadhouse blues, but it's the hard country stuff that makes this disc worth the price of admission. Both of her original albums are also worth tracking down, but this best-of set sure does a good job boiling 'em down into one swell little package, sure to please the old-school country lover in us all.
