In these days of the crossover, it is hardly surprising to find two great opera singers making a foray into numbers from Broadway musicals by such composers as Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. What's remarkable is that they seem completely at home in this music. Both say they grew up listening to it, and indeed they approach these songs with no less care and seriousness than they'd give the most demanding operatic arias, and without a trace of condescension. However, their vocal, expressive, and interpretive styles are very different, both in the solos and the duets. Terfel projects assertive manliness, tender, intimate affection, and rollicking humor without external effects, using only his incomparably sonorous voice and powerful personality. His diction is impeccably clear, and though he has sometimes let his theatrical flair spill over into Schubert songs, he is the soul of simplicity here. This is in stark contrast to Fleming's tendency to exaggerate colors and dynamics and to turn sentiment into sentimentality. Moreover, though she claims a background as a jazz singer, her "crooning" sounds artificial and unnatural. However, her top notes, culminating in a triumphant high C at the end of the final number, ring gloriously. Her voice glows and shimmers with irresistible luster, soaring from seductive whispers to thrilling climaxes. The program features a great variety of love songs, and includes an antiwar protest (from Beautiful Game), a celebration of the American dream (from Ragtime), and a rousing fun piece (from The Music Man). Unfortunately, even the best songs are marred by thoroughly corny arrangements. Listeners will find their own favorites, but the real "stars" on this record are the two singers. --Edith Eisler

I truly enjoy Terfel's vocal talent and found it to be well suited for this genre. Fleming's impeccable soprano voice is a bit overpowering for this style of music. (I own this CD)
A Master Class in Singing.......2006-06-20
This CD is a must-have for any person interested in the singing art. Ms. Fleming and Mr. Terfel gives new light to these Musical Theatre classics. Their fine vocalism in the musical theatre genre coupled with the depth of musicality and dramatic phrasing in each of the selections is truly a breath of fresh air. This recording is indeed a Master Class!
Bryn is swell, but the bombast is annoying.......2006-05-03
Love Bryn Terfel, the finest bass-baritone in Opera. Love Renee Fleming's luscious soprano. But the arrangements! Kettle drums and bombast and bang, bang, bang! Once Renee starts swooping, things go downhill, with little redemption.
It starts out beautifully. "Not While I'm Around" has never sounded more intimate to me than Terfel's caressing pianissimo. Fleming's "Moonglow" is stunningly good. Terfel makes a medley out of "I Don't Remember You and Sometimes a Day Goes By" that makes you want to cheer, and Fleming does a lovely Sondheim medley as well. Bryn sings "Stars" and makes me long for him in Les Mis. And then...things tend to go downhill. The bombast takes over and gets to you - it overwhelms two of the biggest voices now recording. Then Fleming begins to swoop and scoop, over-coloring and often coming off as simply self-indulgent, reminding one of a kid who makes a point of putting his face in a camera shot.
I don't mind Bryn as Prof. Harold Hill - I frankly think the Welsh accent is kinda cute - and it doesn't bother me on "Wheels of Dream," either, but Fleming seems to have lost her mind on that great song, and rather than indulging her, it would have simply been better left off the album. Ditto "All that Wasted Time" which is pretty much unlistenable. Ms. Fleming needs to stop thinking she is a jazz singer.
The four stars are because this album does contain some truly GLORIOUS moments, particularly in the duets, and in Terfel's solo's which are warm and memorable. Without him, the kettle drums and Fleming's self-indulgence would have made the whole endeavor unbearable.
Surprisingly Fine Crossover from Fleming and Terfel.......2006-04-18
Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming are two of the most acclaimed opera singers of our day. But the musical theatre fan who puts on their Broadway CD, RENEE AND BRYN: UNDER THE STARS, expecting to hear a carelessly compiled hodgepodge of songs sung by voices ill-suited to them is in for a big surprise, beginning with the first phrases of the duo's warmly sung "Not While I'm Around" from SWEENEY TODD. True, these singers' beautiful voices have greater power and range than even the best of the Broadway stars', but this is an asset in these songs, most of which are either semi-operatic in nature or call (like THE MUSIC MAN's "Seventy-Six Trombones") for such an outsize personality as Terfel's. Fleming's sensuous and tonally gorgeous rendition of "Moonfall" from THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD can be placed among her very finest recordings, operatic and otherwise. And Terfel is ideally suited to both "Pretty Women" from SWEENEY TODD and "Stars" from LES MISERABLES; few if any Broadway Javerts could match the impact of his "This I swear by the stars!" Kander and Ebb's "I Don't Remember You" and "Sometimes a Day Goes By" make a perfect medley here, as do Sondheim's "I Wish I Could Forget You" and "Loving You" from PASSION. And though I don't care for the Andrew Lloyd Webber selections (ersatz Puccini) or the Jason Robert Brown one (which sounds too much like a pop song), Terfel and Fleming's singing of them is beyond reproach. The program ends with a bang: a rendition of "Wheels of a Dream" worthy to stand beside the now-classic one by Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonald on the original cast album of RAGTIME. Welshman Terfel's natural accent is noticeable here; but if one imagines him as, say, an Irish immigrant married to an African-American woman (as Fleming here sounds uncannily like McDonald or like Leontyne Price) his accent is appropriate and his voicing of the "bridge" section ("Oh Sarah, it's more than promises/Sarah, it must be true...") especially moving. Fleming's ecstatic final high note makes one want to applaud and cheer, both for the song and for the successful "crossover" effort.
BREATHTAKING VOCAL MAGNIFICENCE~BRAVO!!!.......2004-10-11
So captivating are these incredible singers in the glorious live concert "Under The Stars" creating an unforgettable musical masterpiece of epic proportions that is so moving and great to watch that I ran out and purchased this studio recorded Compact Disc the next day!! The brilliance of the live broadcast carried over into the recording studio capturing Renee and Bryn at the peak of their incredible powers emotionally and vocally making them the most effective crossover artists since the great Barbara Cook who like Miss Cook sing with emotion that is accurate for this type of material which is usually not the case with classical voices. Renee Fleming sings with genuine passion and stirring emotions and her timing is absolutely flawless and this lady has alot of soul and the Torrie Zito arranged "Moonfall" is a stunning masterpiece that clearly illustrates this. A dazzling medley each show both singers in glorious peak form with Bryn splendid in the enchanting "I Don't Remember You/Sometimes A Day Goes By" and Renee spellbinding and haunting in the gorgeous "I Wish I Could Forget You/Loving You" which will make anyone who loves a great voice fall in love with this amazingly gifted singer. "Stars" features a commanding performance from Bryn that raises the roof and this is so refreshing and inspired in these musically tired times!!! This superb showcase is full of wonderfully exciting performances which are capable of making people feel again and this is what is sorely needed in music today and BRAVO to Bryn Terfel and the gorgeous Renee Fleming for achieving this with complete artistic brilliance. Captivating duets fill this wonderous collection and never have classics such as "Not While I'm Around" or "All I Ask Of You" been sung more brilliantly than here. Renee is magical with "Hello, Young Lovers" while Bryn is commanding and winning with "Pretty Women". Renee's stunning "All The Wasted Time" is a vocal and emotional tour-de-force that is like a wild roller-coaster ride that you won't want to end as this is one of the most riveting songs that I have ever heard from a Broadway score and this certainly must be the definitive performance of this great song. This lady can really really sing and this is some deeply serious singing~WOW!!! Gorgeous together again in the beautiful "How Could I Ever Know" which is hair-raising and wonderfully soulful and sophisicated together in Cole Porter's "So In Love". A grand finale by these two awesome vocal wonders lives up to expectations being a complete blowout vocal festival and they definitely do not disappoint here!!! "Wheels Of A Dream" is mesmerizing and soars to magnificent heights with Bryn and Renee in peak form singing to the skies and hitting notes that I swear I have never heard before~BRAVO!!!!!!! You are both magically inspired and simply put as good as it gets!!!! Highly recommended if you love two awesome vocal wonders at their absolute peak in a magnificent beautifully orchestrated setting!!! Thank you Bryn & Renee...

Pastiche Reigns Supreme.......2006-12-18
'Maria T' greatest virtues reside in the clever interraction, facilitated by digital technology, of interweaving contemporary string work with the famed Romanian folk singer of fifty plus years ago, Maria Tanase. Balanescu has imaginatively complemented the melodic lines of the original folk tunes, and where Maria doesn't appear, the results are pleasant, if not startling. The opening track is an accurate index of thge remainder, hypnotic in its slowly built, repetitive stanzas. It's with a sigh of relief that Tanase's haunting vocals eventually appears mid way through proceedings. 'Mountain Call' is by far the most attractive number, and the reason I purchased the CD. It's an easy jump to imagine Tanase standing to deliver this from one side of a verdant valley. Has anyone heard of Leda Velladares, a Brazillian folk collector/singer I met in the early 80s in Paris? Tanase has the South-American's commanding depth of register and interpretive powers. For me, Balanescu would have improved this effort by slipping this chantreuse into more of his compositions.
Beautiful avant garde classical.......2005-11-26
In 1987, Alexander Balanescu left the Arditti Quartet to form his own Balanescu Quartet and in the time since they've gone on to gain a reputation as one of the worlds leading contemporary musical foursomes. Seemingly working without any genre boundaries, the group has collaborated with Gavin Bryars, Ornette Coleman, David Byrne, the Pet Shop Boys, Spiritualized, Kate Bush, Kraftwerk, and others. They've created film scores (Angels And Insects), have contributed to film scores (The Garden) and have released a slew of unique and interesting albums, performing both interpretations of other artists work and original scores of their own.
Maria T is the first work from the group in almost five years (since 2000's Il Partigiano Gionni) and clocking in at almost eighty minutes is absolutely epic in scope. The album re-connects Alexander Balanescu with his Romanian roots, as it pays tribute to one of his earliest musical influences, the iconic folk singer and actress Maria Tanase. For the release, he took the works of Tanase and then re-imagined them through his own eclectic musical perspectives, and the result is easily some of the most stunning work ever from the group.
As with many of their releases, Maria T isn't simply the work of a string quartet as it encorporates percussion and even sampled vocals from Tanase. "Spotdance" opens the release with a rather upbeat note as a repeated string motif pans back and forth as violin melodies unfold on top of it and percussion chugs away in a subtle but persistant way. The way the track unfolds and even the way that it's constructed owes a lot to electronic music (especially in the repeated and layered melodic pieces), and like the best work of the group re-imagines the music in a way that holds the elements of the original while taking it new places.
"Empty Space Dance" takes some of the same elements as the first track and weaves them in an even more exotic way, unfolding elements even more slowly before percussion enters the track about three-quarters of the way through and really changes the direction before it again falls away. "Mountain Call" is only one of several tracks that use the sampled vocals of Tanase and as one would expect, the group gives them an almost reverential feel, letting the vocals themselves take the foreground and reverberate for long periods of time while only providing quiet and subtle melodic reflections.
With eleven tracks that fill nearly the physical maximum allowed by CD technology, there are enough highlights that I could spend nearly an entire paragraph talking about each track. Suffice to say, the five-year break certainly doesn't mean that the group was going through any sort of a slump if this is the result. From the melancholy and reflective "Aria" to the playful fiddling of "Interlude," Maria T is a release that shows off the power of a group of musicians who refuse to be bound in by simple genre definitions. Much like the Kronos Quartet, the Balanescu Quartet have often shrugged-off many expectations one may have of a string quartet, and with this release will hopefully finally garner even more of the attention they deserve.

Finally..........2005-05-16
Creative, pulsing, at times melancholy, others like travelling to a slavic smokey den in the 20's. Not avant garde - not going through the motions.
Not a typical string quartet album, some percussion at times, Dietrich like vocals in Romanian that sound like a 78 record on a couple of tracks (hence why this is a CD are interpretations of a famous Romanian female vocalist back in the 30's (?). Emotionally powerful.
The first track has a pulse underneath that would not be out of place on an electronic ambient loop session, but it is all acoustic. You do not need a laptop to make interesting music.
As a fan of lots of music genres (if you have to use them), this would appeal to ambient heads (the Budd-Eno kind), Philip Glass worshippers, indie elitists a la Animal Collective, Mice Parade, Low, etc., jazz purists, string quartet lovers that will go out of the box, world music lovers from bandoleon to slavic waltzes.
Go for it.
wandering in time and space.......2005-05-03
In despite of the traditional string quartet ensemble and the lack of "easy melody tricks" just to please the audience from the very first listening , Alexander Balanescu is buildig up slowly,in time and space an amazing ipnotic sea of sounds strongly bound to his Romanian folk roots.Take your time, the distant " mountain call " and the overlapping patterns leading to the entrace of the amazing voice of Maria Tanase will just leave you wandering the countryside of some Romanian village where the music sounds as still bound to the mystery of life.

Mostly a decent CD.......2003-10-30
I wonder how many people saw the ad for this CD on TV and ordered it right away without looking further into the contents. Brightman? Bocelli? Pavarotti? Florez? Watson? All Three Tenors? All on one CD? Sounded like a winner in the ad. They don't mention the Main Title from Star Wars. Nor do they mention (even Amazon doesn't show it!), that Anne Sofie Von Otter's performance is actually a duet with Elvis Costello, who simply does not have the chops or vocal gifts that most of the other artists on this CD are blessed with. In fact, that song is positively dreadful, and it's all because of Costello's vocally-strained style. What the hell is he doing on this CD? The rest of this CD is generally fine, but certainly do not expect a CD full of classical music, and be prepared to skip song #2 every time you play the CD.

Frankie Laine has a distinctive voice and phrasing that makes every song his own. What a treat to still have this wonderful talent recording for us.
50 years of Inspiring music........2002-10-21
Frankie Laine inspired people with his music in the decade following World War II with songs that were upbeat and positive. His music and style was refreshing and different. He worked a song until it fit his style and there was no doubt that it was Frankie the first time you heard a new song. At about the age of 85 Frankie Laine recorded the songs for this "Wheels of a Dream" CD. The songs are all new material and again Frankie has worked them into his style. The voice is a little different and even a little more mellow than the old Frankie. I especially like the cuts of Moonglow, Until now, How do you keep the music playing,They call the wind Maria, and of course the title track. If you think that this old man can't still carry a tune or hold a note, just listen to the closing bar of "Until now". If you like this CD wait until you hear his just released CD "Old Man Jazz". And if you really want to get hooked, watch the video "The European Concerts".Because as good as it is to hear Frankies music, it is a special experience to see him in concert.
Timeless songs, forever young..........2002-04-02
Backed by first class arrangements and musicians, this album recalls the high quality recordings of Frankie Laine's years with Columbia. So far as Laine's performance goes -- well, the man is simply a master. The songs cover a wide variety of styles, spanning approximately 50 years (1930s - 80s) of popular music, and Laine puts them all across with style. From a poignant interpretation of "Young at Heart," to jazzy version of "Moonglow," to a wonderful big band arrangement of "How Sweet It Is," Laine captures the heart of music on take after take. "Until Now," "They Call the Wind Maria," and "Song of India" are nothing short of amazing -- in the latter number, Laine's voice could almost be coming straight out of 1952. This is one of my all-time favorite albums.

Forget that Frainkie Laine was 85 when he recorded this cd. It is terrific at any age! His voice has held up remarkably well. There are 50 and 60 year olds who can't touch him!
He performs SONG OF INDIA as well as it can be done and his take on the title cut is bravura; strong, touching and virile. Some tracks will appeal more than others of course, yet there is not a bad track on the CD.
This CD is available if you search for it. Do it! As these legends depart they will not be replaced and Laine (may he go on forever) is truly a marvel.

Still sounds great after all of these years. Frankie Laine can still put over a song like no other. Listen especially to Moonglow and the man's phrasing.

Getting it up again.......2002-01-20
Who would have thought that after all these years of emptiness, they still can play some good electronic rock of the past? Who cares if it's a little mangled, performed without the nerve the once had - when you are present at such concert, if you are lucky to catch them when once every ten years they decide to treat us with golden oldies again? I don't care. For this little pleasure of hearing the cheer of the audience again, of other people as happy as moi - it's worth spending money on this album. For "Valentine Wheels" is a nostalgic journey into the past.
The album begins by a bang, like an old ferro cassette you recorded froma radio. Where were the sound engineers? Anyway, the band delivers 'Waterborne', a good misty track from Oasis of 1995. Next, we are treated to the only official live recording of 'Sorcerer's Theme' of 1976. I can't say that I was set on my knees with the way it was performed, but the tune is like balsam for the soul. You can't deny that, can you? Then, we briefly enter 'Poland' of 1983. A little lukewarm, but still, the same comment applies. Unfortunately, the next number, 'Sundance Kid', is taken from the shallow recent era, to transform swiftly into 'Silver Scale' known from an excellent soundtrack album "Wavelength" of 1983. Beautiful melody of that Schmoelling track is somewhat spoiled by Froese interpretation, but nevertheless, it was a great surprise. I have never heard "Wavelength" live! 'Warsaw in the Sun' - of course they chose the least attractive part of "Poland" album to play! fear not, the next composition is 'Stratosfear', not the original version of 1976, but the one from "Tyranny of Beauty" of 1994. Still, Zlatko Perica made a very good job of recreating the original sound of Froese's Les Paul guitar, and even added some! It's one long guitar solo. Awesome. The band fills the space between this rocket of a tune and the next one with some unimaginative muzak, but fortunately, it's a short break, so we can endure it. What happens next is 'Dolphin Dance' - and we are jumping back to 1986. This Christopher Franke composition is bland in comparison to Franke's own version played on "The London Concert" of 1991. Sorry Edgar! After a while, the band increases an already fast tempo to match 'Le Parc', a dynamic composition from the beautiful album "Le Parc" of 1985. Sadly, "Valentine Wheels" end much too fast with 'Beach Theme' known from "Thief" of 1980.
I agree that the performance does not stand up to the comparison with the old times, but still, after tears of boredom we shed in the recent decade, this is a treat, a journey back in time, which is always welcome. Everything must end somewhere, everything must pass, as George Harrison would have said if he were alive.
Great Album.......2000-08-21
As a life-long TD fan and former youngest member of the now non-existent Tangerine Dream International Fan Club, I reckon this live album is absolutely great. I generally am a big fan of TD of the 70s and early 80s, and much less enthusiastic about the 90s stuff. I think it is great that TD at times play some of the old material using the original tunes in their recent performances (e.g. 'Betrayal' or 'Poland' in this album), but also throw into the mix some of the newer stuff as well. I would have been thrilled to be in the audience for such a performance. Tournado and this album are both great, in my opinion their best live albums since Poland of 1984.
Disappointing performance.......2000-06-06
Time was when Tangerine Dream's concerts would be platforms for the band to showcase new ideas to the fans, as well as places for the band members themselves to experiment with new ideas in a live improvisatory setting. Judging from the contents of this disc, together with its partner "Tournado" (which features the second half of another concert from the same tour), Tangerine Dream concerts are nowadays just an excuse to trot out the same tired old tunes before an audience happy to play 'spot the golden oldie'!
Time was when Tangerine Dream's live recording releases used to be carefully honed creations, providing fresh material for fans new and old to savour and admire. Nowadays, it seems like it's all too much effort to craft anything new from the endlessly recycled material. Maybe Edgar and Jerome have finally succumbed to commercial pressures? Maybe they've seen the burgeoning bootleg market that profits so handsomely from their labours and have decided it's time to cash in themselves? Maybe they've just dried up?
Whatever the reasons, though, this disc presents nothing new (or even anything particularly interesting) for the long-time fan. The ten numbers played here span the band's output all the way from "Sorcerer" to "Oasis" but it is all played in such a uniformly lacklustre way that anyone who knows what the band used to be capable of in live performance can only be bitterly disappointed by this release. Even 'Stratosfear 95' limps home with no great show of enthusiasm.
"Tournado" is something of an improvement on this release. At least it contains some sort of fire - something that is just altogether lacking here. Textures are also so muddy that my ears were definitely tired by the end. What a shame! Maybe you had to be there...?
A must-have for all TD fans!.......1999-03-26
Exceptionally well recorded and mastered, this live performance showcases the versatility and consistency which hallmark Tangerine Dream's 30+ years of excellence. This could easily be called a "Best Of" album.
