This album, his fourth, shows [Mark Elf] to be a master mainstream bopper, spinning out intricate solos with a remarkable degree of melodic coherence and development. In this respect, and also in his tone and style, Elf's work is reminiscent of and compares favorably with that of the late Joe Pass. Any guitarist will tell you that's about as high a praise as one can get, but while Elf isn't as flashy or virtuosic as Pass, he is clearly at or near the top of this very demanding art.
