A Wonderful Overview of Shirley Bassey's Music.......2007-05-17

For those who know Shirley Bassey only from "Goldfinger" & "Diamonds Are Forever", she can do so much more. This CD is a perfect example of her incredible versatility and performing excellence, to say nothing of just the sound of that voice. Depending on the song, she can sing sweetly and powerfully as she does on "Cry Me A River" (1959), or with gratitude and poignance on "Love Story" (1971), with the wisdom and acceptance of being foolishly human on "Send In the Clowns" (1975), with the joy and showmanship of a Judy Garland on "You Made Me Love You", with the 'Sassy Bassey'playfulness and power of "Macavity"(1993)from "CATS", and with the sublime longing and and heartache of "The Shadow of Your Smile" (1966).
This 2-CD set gives a wonderful overview of her career from the '50's thru the 90's....and yes, those magnificent Bond songs are included.

Warning - Copy Control Software on this CD.......2007-02-03

I am a big Shirley Bassey fan and I would rate this CD 5 stars for the song selections, her performance, and sound quality. However, I rate the CD only 1 star because it is encumbered with CD Copy Control software (see Wikipedia for more information on CD Copy Control).

When this CD is inserted into a CD player on a Windows computer, a prompt will pop up saying, "To listen to the CD a number of files need to be updated on your PC. Select OK to install, Cancel to quit the installation process". If you select OK, a number of dll and exe files will be installed from the CD onto your computer. After installation the files will run automatically.

The purpose of these files is to limit what you can do with the CD music you purchased. Copy Control also has a history of causing playback problems on stand-alone CD players. Indeed, the fine print on the back of the CD case regarding Copy Control states, "On some equipment, for example car CD players, playback problems may be encountered."

The good news is that EMI, Sony, and the few other labels that have flirted with Copy Control since 2000 have finally abandoned it. The bad news is that some CDs previously pressed with Copy Control, such as this one, are still being sold.

I would not have purchased this CD if I had known in advance that it was encumbered with Copy Control software. I should add, however, that despite my declining to install the software, I was able to play the CD just fine on my PC using Windows Media Player and several other players. Your mileage may vary. Caveat emptor.

Great 2 CD set!.......2005-08-19

Update! I play this CD on computer and have never been prompted to download software. It plays perfectly on PC, HiFi and car stereo. Now the review....
This is a great value 2 cd set with 36 songs by the great Dame Shirley Bassey. Sadly for the fans and collectors there are no tracks that have not already appeared on cd. Considering that at the time of writing there are six Shirley Bassey UA/EMI albums from the 1970's still not re-released on cd this is unforgivable. However, for the price this collection is well packaged with a 10-page booklet with colour pics. (but all used in other cds and complete with the "usual" biography). The booklet also contains inaccurate detail. It states that the version of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is the 1978 version when it is in fact the poor 1993 version from the Sings Andrew Lloyd Webber album. Alone Again (Naturally) is dated 1967 instead of 1976 and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face states 1982 instead of 1972. Small detail....but why can't they get it right...they are the professionals!! Overall this is a good collection for those who want more than a Greatest Hits cd. Shirley's versions of Killing Me Softly With His Song, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Send In The Clowns, Anyone Who Had A Heart and Feelings are worth the price alone. This is a good collection covering the years 1959 to 1978 plus a few tracks from 1993 that are better skipped. If you are new to the Bassey sound this is a very good introduction.

Scotch is what you drink
A Scot, or Scottish, is what you are.

The only exception is the 'Scotch-Irish' in the U.S., this is the Traditional name for the Scots who moved to Ireland, then moved to the southern U.S. states.

Okay, I'm done ranting.
This CD is extremely good, The bonnie wee lassie, Bonnie Ridout can play a fiddle like nae other. She does our Celtic tunes proud!

Sad tunes...........2002-12-07

Although this DVD collection is entitled `Scottish Reflections' the music included consists of early Scotch, English, and Irish folk tunes. All of the tunes appear to have been included in earlier DVD collections by Rideout. Gathered together, they form a haunting tribute to lost loved ones and past times.

Many of the pieces are viscerally connected to the early 19th Century when the British were battling Napoleon. Pieces such as `The Source of Spey' and `Periwig were dance tunes published in the Captain Simon Fraser Collection of 1815. `Lamentation for the Fallen Heroes at Waterloo' provides a haunting retrospective of the definitive battle. It takes little imagination to visualize sailors dancing to fiddle tunes such as `Itchy Fingers' or `Highland Laddie' (accompanied by a penny whistle), or soldiers sitting around camp fires at night contemplating home life and the chances of death while listening to `Lament for Limerick' (Ireland) or `Lochaber No More' (Scotland). Even the waltzes such as `Irish Lamentation' (England) are retrospective and `Gloomy Winter' says it all. A more recent piece, `Dunblane', by Charlie Glendinning commemorates the deaths of 16 school children and their teacher in 1996.

Using varied bowing techniques, Bonnie Rideout has created a set of poignant renditions of old and new tunes. National Sottish Harp Champion Sue Richards joins Rideout for several of these pieces, including `Unst Bridal March', `Cro Kintale' and the various lamentations. Perfect music for contemplation on a snowy winter's eve.

This CD really fits the bill for beautiful and heartfelt scottish fiddle music. It's a must to add to my Scottish music collection. The fiddle playing shines throughout and is clearly out front of all the instruments yet the other instruments create beautiful harmonies and variations with the fiddle. The music on this Cd features Bonnie Rideout's fiddling in performances that have interesting arrangements with a lot of variety to them because of all the other instruments. Its music that many Bonnie Rideout fans and Scottish music fans might miss out because the CD features tracks from other outstanding Celtic musicians and early music musicians that are not usually associated with Scottish music. Its a gem!

divine and elegant.......2002-08-16

Wow, this is a wonderful CD and is a nice follow up to her other solo albums such as her last one called Scottish Fire. This one is a little more relaxed and easy listening- good after a long hard day of work or good for a long car trip too. It's got real nice group ensemble playing with Celtic harp and viola da gamba and also tts a MUST HAVE to just add to your Celtic collection of CDs or if you are a Bonnie Rideout fan. It's got some very fine arrangements and great tunes on it and the Scottish fiddle is really featured well and stands out clearly from the other instruments yet blends with them too. The original tune called "dunblane" written by Charlie Glendinning, a piper from the City of Washington Pipe Band is so moving it makes you cry and yet there are lively tunes too and a variety of sounds and unusual instruments played by members of the early music group Hesperus. The liner notes are very informative about some of the tunes and the use of Scottish fiddle and ornamentation and the bagpipe traditions.

Even though most of what is being released now is repetition, I am trying to obtain everything possible from the incredible talents of this man, John Denver. May his memory and music linger forever. Hopefully, America will "get it" soon.

Scarecrow Collection.......2005-09-22

The Scarecrow Collection is a revolutionary, new jam band. They have recently began to collect a significant amount of followers and positive reviews for having some of the best live shows around. They play mostly in the Connecticut/New York area, but have really rounded up a large local following.

This album represents everything that this group has to offer. The Scarecrow Collection likes to think that they are more than just a band that plays the same chord progression over and over again -- and they are. They have very beautiful, original lyrics, and offer a wide selection of different genres. And, while this is less apparent in their CD, every member in this band is an instrumental virtuoso. The drum solos that Fee can do are pretty incredible.

There's a lot to be found on this CD. Some up-beat rock tunes, some complex solos and jam patterns, some slow, more melencolly music, and even salsa and jazz.

If you're a fan of bands like Phish, Steve Kimock Band, and The Disco Biscuits, there is definitely something to be found on this breathtaking new album for you. This CD pull off everything from Miles Davis to Neil Young. Highly recommended!

Great but not their Greatest.......2005-07-20

I found this group by accident about a year ago. In that time, I have become a big fan of their style, a wonderful fusion of renaissance melodies and lyrics with a bit of a harsh, rock edge to it. They are magnificent.

This album is a collection of previous works. Some of them like "Once in a Million Years", "All Because of You" or "Waiting Just for You" are among my absolute favorites but, as I said, it has been done before. Other selections are merely great. They do have a compilation album in which everything ranks, for me, as their greatest but this is not it.

Still, it's a great album!

Usually a program like this, especially when performed by a player of Larsen's skill, would be a showcase for flashy technique, but he and League take a different tack, treating each tune as a jewel to be polished and presented for its own beauty rather than as a chance to show off. The result is an album of unusual loveliness. Highlights include the opening set of reels, on which League's bodhran playing is especially impressive and shows the effects of his tabla studies, and a sweet rendition of Turlough O'Carolan's "O'Carolan's Draught," on which the artist plays concertina in a very straightforward, unadorned style. At the end of the disc are three tracks featuring conversation and a performance of "The Cuckoo's Nest" by the Irish melodeon player Michael J. Kennedy. These last tracks bear no obvious relation to the rest of the album (though Larsen and League do perform "The Cuckoo's Nest" themselves earlier in the program), but are lots of fun nevertheless. A rare grace and beauty........2003-11-15

Glory be, Grey Larsen is recording again! One-third of the late, lamented Celtic/New Age/folk group Metamora, Larsen kept a low profile in the years after the band's breakup, building a national reputation as a teacher of the Irish flute. A few years ago, he found a simpatico partner in the young bodhran player and guitarist Paddy League, and founded his own recording label, Sleepy Creek. So far Larsen and League have recorded two CDs together; "The Green House" was the first of them, and among other things it demonstrates strongly just how much of Metamora's distinctive sound was due to Larsen. The music here is a seamless medley of ancient Irish airs and Larsen originals; it is impossible to tell which are Larsen's own without checking the credits, and that is a great tribute to the authenticity of his musicianship. Joyous, graceful and poignant, this CD is a must for any lover of Celtic music. "The Green House" is essentially a tribute to Larsen's mentor, Michael J. Kennedy, a melodeon player from County Galway who spent the last 50-odd years of his life in the Cincinnati area. The last three tracks on the CD are comprised of a radio interview Kennedy gave not long before his death in 1978, in which he plays "The Cuckoo's Nest," a song he collected, and talks about his youth playing dances in County Galway. Bluff and cheery, Kennedy sounds exactly like Victor McLaglen in "The Quiet Man," only a lot more amiable. Kennedy was an inspiration to an entire generation of Midwestern folk musicians, and the three end tracks demonstrate amply his charm and talent.
