4 out of 5 stars Great Sound.......2007-03-12

As a Beach Boys Fan for years and I wanted to get one of main influential bands on them, the Four Freshmen. The harmonies are of the highest quality. You easily tell why they had a significant influence on the Beach Boys and I was not disappointed. I am pleased that I have decided to purchase the CD as I knew very little of them as they were before my time so to speak.

5 out of 5 stars bravo! four freshmen.......2006-08-10

It's soooo nice to hear the songs and actual singing of 4 outstanding vocalists. Harmonization is fabulous and such extremely complex chord work for voices makes this cd a treasury of what it was like in the past. My favorites(although all tracks have my vote)are "It's a blue world", "Poinciana","Angel Eyes", "Graduation Day", "Charmane", and "Route 66". As I mentioned, it's a gold mine over all.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD, great group, but!.......2005-07-30

This is a great collection of one of the best close-harmony groups from the golden era. However, as a semi-pro, tight-harmony singer myself, and since Amazon doesn't seem to provide a link from the Freshmen, I urge you to search for, listen to and purchase at least one CD of "The Hi los." It was Gene Puerling's original band, and they are simply THE best at clean, tight harmony. They're the band everyone else copied afterwards. You won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Four Freshmen at their best!!!.......2005-01-17

This CD from Capitol offers a slice of the Four Freshmens greatest material throughout their Golden years. Its a rather vintage CD in that is contains a few excerpts from Ross Barbour and Bob Flanagan. Being a young listener, I never was around during the Freshemns Golden years, but I find their music enjoyable to listen to and classy.

4 out of 5 stars Redundant.......2002-11-13

This album is typical of the last few years of Frosh releases. They are the very best but every new release is a another mix of the same old favorites, just a different title. What ever happened to the new Frosh who were to take over the Freshman empire? As far as I know, they had only one release and it was great. It was a salute to Frank Sinatra.

4 out of 5 stars Close to a perfect 5-star..........2006-11-15

European reissues continue to be a hit-and-miss gamble for our CD buck. One common shortcoming of the EU reissues is the lousy cover art reproduction, as we see again on this re-issue. Hey, I'm grateful they at least DID reproduce the original rather than to dispense with it altogether in favor of some quick, slapped together unrelated junk. But what they did was to simply crop it from the CD cover, which has a kind of "hairnet" design over it--thus on the full-page repros, you get that hairnet design in there, too, just because EMI was too cheap (or careless) to make a separate repro for the full page picture (or maybe they think we're dummies who wouldn't notice).

And what's with those teeny tiny liner note repros? I've seen Japanese reissues with those exact-scale repros, but you could clearly read the notes. In other words, the Japanese, with their meticulous attention to every detail, did it properly, whereas on this EMI reissue, you have to wear magnifyers, and even at that you can only decipher the name of a sax or guitar soloist just here and there. Ehhh, I just shake my head and dig out the original Capitol LPs to read the notes.

But on the most important point--the audio quality--EMI scores 100. Sounds beautiful! And NO typical EU digital tampering with the original audio, no added reverb crap. (EMI ruined their reissue of Ray Anthony Concert--don't ever buy that one; you hear this swirling, key jingling sound left by the digital process EMI subjected that great music to.) And the sound's the most important thing to us CD buyers, right? I'm listening to "Sometimes I'm Happy" as I write. Yep, they did an excellent audio restoration here. I have ...AND FIVE TRUMPETS and ...AND FIVE TROMBONES coming, too. Hope they're as nice sounding as this one.

Thanks from ol' Mike DiMartino in Rochester, NY!

I've had these albums in LP form for many years. In fact, my esteem for the Four Freshman may be indicated by the fact that I have every LP they put out. These two are fine examples of their work, both in the ballads and the uptemp songs. I have recommended, and do here recommend, anything by the Frosh, or Four Freshmen. You won't go wrong with this combo of two albums for the price of one!

      5 out of 5 stars A "first" that was a triumph.......2005-08-19

After years of doing their own accompaniment, the Four Freshmen & Five Trombones was the FF's first album with an orchestral backup - as well as arrangements by Pete Rugulo (who arranged many of Stan Kenton's early classics). I loved the album when it was first released on vinyl - in the spring of 1956 - and still love it today. The Freshmen renditions of "I Remember You" and "Angel Eyes" are the best I've heard by any artist. The album did well and was soon followed by the Five Trumpets album. In that collection "Goodbye" mournfully drags along, but snappy versions of "Easy Street" and "Got a Date With an Angel" add delight and verve to yet another triumph in jazz vocalization.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Albums, Four Freshmen, Five Trombones and Five Trumpets!.......2005-08-18

Discovered by bandleader Stan Kenton in a small midwestern lounge in the fifties, The Four Freshmen became one of the most successful vocal groups in recorded history and these two Capitol recordings from the fifties are the "Freshmen" at their best. The "Five Trombones", is a marvelous blending of the quartet's voices and the mellow tones generated by five of the finest trombone players available. The "Five Trumpets" with the Freshmen is another stellar album. These guys were great, they played their own instuments and worked out the most impressive harmonies ever. This is not barbershop-this is hip and enjoyable musicianship. If you've never heard them before, after you listen to a sample, you may think that you are listening to The Beach Boys in their heyday-Brian Wilson was a huge fan and wanted to emulate the unique sound of The Four Freshman. Do yourself a favor, invite the "Freshmen" into your home.

5 out of 5 stars Taking Barbershop to the Next Level!.......2005-07-22

The Four Freshmen Scored big hits in early fifties, but rather than go with the formula of pure barbershop, they decided to do something different. Introducing cha-cha, Calypso, and blending them with jazzy horns and guitars, the Freshmen shook up some great oldies by Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, and Oscar Hammerstien, and made them alarmingly modern for the time. The uptempo songs are very jazzy, and are almost swing numbers. Listening to some of the tracks may remind you of Frank Sinatra. That isn't surprising because Sinatra, who was recording in Capitol at the same time as the Freshmen, shared the same recording style as them, taking the strength of their recognizable hit-making voices and surrounding them with new arrangements and different styles. Along with their incredible harmonies, this is what supposedly influenced the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson so much. A conceptual record like the Four freshmen and the Five Trombones foreshadowed concept albums like "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and "Pet Sounds," creating a specific mood for the listener which is sustained throghout the record.
If I had to pick a standout track, it would be "Our Love is Here to Stay." Great barbershop and tight vocals from the boys always sound great, but the arrangment is the star of the track. The song begins with only vocals, and when the bass creeps in you realize you are listening to a wonderful new version of this almost unrecognizable old favorite.

      5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2005-04-25

At times, listening to this wonderful "twofer," I thought I had stumbled across some undiscovered Brian Wilson music. Wilson is very open in acknowledging the Freshmen as the inspiration for his arrangement of harmonies - and now I can see how and why.
These guys are simply superb, and the songs are as relevant and listenable today as they were way back then.
In very accessible form, this is wonderful music to have on the shelf, and more than occasionally on the player.

5 out of 5 stars Sad Tunes Never Felt So Good.......2003-10-29

The Freshmens' harmonies transform tunes like "The Night We Called It a Day" and "There Will Never Be Another You" into quixotically uplifting listening adventures. All the songs, really, are impeccably performed; this group was the finest of its kind for my money. (By the way, the group still exists in the form of a quartet of young replacements -- it's a kind of Menudoization but the new guys replicate the original group's sound pretty well and are worth a listen.) Anyway, reserve an evening for this classic collection and wallow in the tremendous arrangements and the pure sonic richness.

      5 out of 5 stars FRESHMEN CLASSICS.......2004-03-25

i owned both of these albums back in the sixties and was happy to see that they are now available on one cd . i have always believed that these two albums were the freshmen's best and i would recommend them both to anyone who appreciates what real music is supposed to sound like . no cacaphony , no screaming , no vulgarities, no unintelligble lyrics , just real music with the classic four freshmen open harmony sound. outstanding ........

1 out of 5 stars Not at their best...........2001-01-10

I am very surprised to read the rave reviews on this CD. Maybe the one I purchased is just a lemon. The sound quality is poor. Also the voices are distorted. Very disappointed. Years ago I owned the LP "Voices in Love." I think it was their best, and my favorite. I especially like the song "In the Still of the Night." Guess I'll continue to look for the albumn at record shows. Have found many Freshmen albums at used record shops, but "Voices in Love" is eluding me.

5 out of 5 stars The Height of Charm and Elegance.......1999-09-15

The Freshmen are the best thing that could happen to American Popular Song. Their gorgeous arrangements considerably enhance the harmonies of those marvellous melodies without ever destroying their basic richness. This particularly applies to the Love Lost and Voices in Love albums but to me the same can be said about most of the Freshmen Capitol output. Their reissues on the CD format are thus mostly welcome!

5 out of 5 stars ...Without a doubt , the best they ever recorded!.......1999-06-06

If your a fan of wonderful harmonies and fabulous arrangements ,'ya gotta have these.

I've had them on vinyl and never thought they'd be available on c.d. The last one I got was a gift from The Freshmen's former manager back in the early '70's. Ross sent me a note and said that , at the time ,the "Voices in Love" album hadn't been available on Capitol for years. What a great surprise to find it now.

I love these c.d.'s with soft candles , a tasty wine and tasty lady.

      Enjoy , Freshman fans!

5 out of 5 stars Four Freshmen - Greatest Hits.......2005-09-24

I was in high school during the 1950's, so these songs have special meanings for me. Listening to them brings back so many happy memories.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better.......2001-08-24

The first five cuts on this low-cost album are solid Four Freshmen hits, and the sound is excellent. After that, however, we get a mishmash of the group's weaker entries--some with lots of "doowahs" typical of the 1950s. There are better Freshmen albums available for a couple of dollars more.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great Freshmen collection........1998-07-29

The Four Freshmen, as they are known, inspired many later popular groups with their superb harmony. From the Beach Boys to the Manhattan Transfer, vocal harmony has never been the same since the Freshmen. Crossing the lines from Jazz to Pop, the Freshmen had a large audience, and at that time in the early to mid 50's, other four-part vocal groups sprang up, like the Four Coins, Four Lads, etc. In my opinion, the Freshmen were best at difficult, unusual harmonies that were unique, not like traditional Barbershop type quartets. Their music still has a large and varied following of fans, and I exemplify this as I am only 19 years of age. I hope to expose other generations to this fabulous music. Congrats to the Four Freshmen for staking their claim in 20th century music history.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth like butter!.......2007-05-12

Over all a very slick album and the harmonies are flawless. Their particular cover of "Skylark" (which has received a lot of air time on the smooth jazz channels and satellite radio) in my opinion, is better than the original. The CD is a bit pricey but worth the extra few dollars.

      5 out of 5 stars How The Job I s Done.......2006-09-03

I wanted to voice my agreement with the other reviewers of this fine set of tunes. Not only are these fellows keeping a signature ensemble sound alive, but they are rising to the daunting challenge of staying contemporaneous and artistically valid. I hope that circumstances allow them to continue to produce new albums in the future, and that they keep looking for new ways to make four voices sound like fifty. The "In Session" album will remind you why you liked music in the first place.

      5 out of 5 stars Ever Evolving.......2005-03-31

In this newest Four Freshmen CD you still hear that traditional sound that has made them so unique over the past 50+ years. Yet you can hear so much more as this is just not another nastalgic group of hanger-oners. These are all new arrangements where the current group of Freshmen add there own style and modern twists. I have never heard Early Autumn done better as you truly get some great harmonizing.
If you like vocal music -whether you have been Freshmen fans in the past or not, you will like this.

5 out of 5 stars The Freshest Freshmen You'll Ever Hear!.......2005-03-30

Let's cut to the chase by saying this is one super Four Freshmen CD. If you've loved this group in the past, you'll really enjoy the current combination. Bob, Brian, Curtis and Vince are consummate pros and bring the great FF harmony to a group of songs that showcase just how timeless the sound is! Standouts include "Early Autumn", "My One And Only Love" and a version of "If I Only Had A Brain" (with Vince doing some nifty scat-whistling no less) that you'll wind up wanting to hear again and again. Throw evergreens like "Skylark", "That Old Feeling" and a beautiful take on "September Song" into the mix, and you've got one of the best tributes to the Great American Songbook you'll ever hear. Add "In Session" to your want list. Don't miss out on this wonderful CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Latest from the Four Freshmen.......2005-03-19

The Freshmen have won Best Jazz Vocal Group in both Jazz Times and Downbeat polls over the last five years. Released late in 2004 this CD represents the current group in a studio session. All of the songs on this CD are never-before recordings featuring arrangements by the current group (with the exception of Early Autumn by Bill Comstock). All instrumentals are by the Freshmen themselves. This is a must-have CD for fans of the Freshmen and lovers of vocal jazz and it may well propel them to further awards.

5 out of 5 stars The Freshman On Stage.......2005-09-14

A twofer from Collectors Choice, prime examples of The Four Freshmen in concert and in the studio. The concert recording finds the quartet in Southern California playing for an enthusiastic crowd. They sound great live and the patter is delightful. "Voices In Brass" is in the vein of the Four Freshman Five Trumpets and Five Trombones etc. "Voices..." contains there signature tune, "It's A Blue World". Both these albums showcase there marvellous talent.

4 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2005-06-27

The Four Freshmen never sounded better. I have always been a fan of this style of music and the Four Freshmen still have their same magic.
