5 out of 5 stars Beautiful - no other word for it.......2007-05-30

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. A must for both casual and die-hard Western fans. Great even if your sense of nostalgia doesn't reach that far back (like me; I'm 22). I love the combination of slow ballads and fast, jumpy songs.

5 out of 5 stars More Momories of Westerns.......2007-03-09

Boy, do these bring back memories of some of the Great Westerns of the 50's. We sit and listen to the songs and think of the movies and the TV shows that they are from. We can remember who starred in the movies and how the "Sons of the Pioneers" entered the stage to sing.
This is a GREAT CD.

5 out of 5 stars Old West Nostalgia.......2006-10-29

For anyone old enough to remember all the great Old West TV shows and movies from the same era, this CD is bound to bring you lots of fond memories and relaxing pleasure. What's best, the artists are all the originals; there are no remakes. Plenty of tunes are on this CD. It's well worth the price and the time.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2006-10-24

The quality of the samples is better than the quality of the recordings.

5 out of 5 stars I Look Toward Home.......2006-10-05

This album takes me back to Texas. "The Sons Of Katie Elder" sung by Johnny Cash and "Nevada Smith" sung by Merle Kilgore sound good but are a bit modern. "The Searchers" sung by the Sons Of The Pioneers really hits home. As the sun sets and the days grow short I ride away and I look toward home.

5 out of 5 stars Super Value.......2007-05-17

Received sooner than expected from UK vendor. Super value with very good selection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Good Ole Frankie.......2007-03-10

I was really impressed because the songs were just the way I remembered them when I first heard them. I hate when they change the tempo, or other things on songs, but Frankie left everything...guess he also believed in..if it's not broke, don't fix it...

5 out of 5 stars Love Frankie.......2006-11-10

I had this album on 33-1/3 many years ago. Was so glad I found it at Amazon on CD. If You like Frankie Laine, this is one of his best! Digitally remastered sound better than origional.

5 out of 5 stars It's great to hear Frankie's greatness once again!.......2006-06-17

I hadn't been able to regularly listen to Frankie Laine for over two decades but have always had really fond memories of hearing his songs. I finally got around to purchasing this CD and have been very pleased to find that his songs have not diminished over time in their impact on me.

"Moonlight Gambler" has been my favorite song of his all these years but, with this CD, I've found some close competitors. His powerful voice and the great arrangements make for some terrific songs. I highly recommend this CD!

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Frankie Laine Sampler.......2005-10-15

If you are new to Frankie Laine, this CD will expose you to some of the various styles of music he performed.

Mr. Laine was a very powerful and versatile singer who excelled at Western Ballads, 1940's Jazz, Spanish-flavored songs, etc.

My two favorite songs on this disc are "Jezebel" and "Granada".

For anyone who has ever been tormented by a woman, the song "Jezebel" just about says it all!

4 out of 5 stars Memories of Westerns.......2007-03-09

This brings back memories of the westerns I saw as a child. High Noon, Rawhide etc...Frankie Laine has such a memorable voice that these songs by others just don't sound right. I grew up listening to "Hell Bent for Leather" and other records like, Marty Robbins and Johnny Horton.
(I did purchase two so I could give one as a gift.)
I really like the songs on this CD.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to scratch.......2007-01-18

While well produced, I was disappointed in the album - mostly because the majority of the tracks were re-recordings. Frankie Laine still sounds great - but it just wasn't the same.

I bought the CD to replace a well worn vinyl album, but on listening to the CD I found the songs to all be slightly (and in a couple of cases very), different in tempo and vocal inflection - it's definitely not the album I've loved for over 30 years! High Noon in particular is quite different, much slower, with vocal emphasis changed. I'll probably listen to the CD from time to time, but not with the same relish that I enjoyed my old LP.

5 out of 5 stars Only Frankie Laine Sings these Songs His Way.......2006-10-12

Frankie Laine made "High Noon" a legendary Western song with his unique voice full of bravado. "Rawhide" is yet another example of the staying power I think due in part to his interpretation and drive he delivered. "Gunfight At O.K. Corral" is just as impressive. This is a great collection. "Cool Water," "Muletrain," "The Green Leaves Of Summer," "North To Alaska" and "Ghost Riders In The Sky" are just outstanding.

4 out of 5 stars On the Trail.......2006-08-15

I grew through my early years listing to Frankie Lane songs and as I remembered his voice was very haunting and clear. So when I ordered this selection I was not disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Good tunes, but not the original album.......2005-09-07

Unhappily this is not the original album. Some songs are remixed. High Noon was not as I remember it. Some songs are new.
I was a little disappointed, but I am enjoying most of the CD. It would have been a better value if it was the original album.

3 out of 5 stars glaring omission.......2007-02-08

Nice collection, but conspiciously missing
is his signature song: That Lucky Old Sun.

And, on this CD at least one of his best
known songs: Moonlight Gambler is a poor
ad-libbed rendition that does no justice
to the original recording on Columbia.

5 out of 5 stars Jezebel: The Best of Frankie Laine.......2005-09-10

It is a very good album containing a number of Mr. Laine's greatest hits and some lesser known.

5 out of 5 stars Great Frankie Laine arrangements.......2007-03-31

Rockin' contains some great singing by Frankie Laine backed up by a wonderful Los Angeles studio orchestra (Conrad Gozza, et. al) led by Paul Weston. The arrangements are spectacular! I recognize some Billy May charts - Weston , probably, did the string arrangements. GREAT STUFF here.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Frankie Laine.......2007-03-11

I was delighted to find this CD available on amazon.com as the quality of music these days has suffered so much as the level of talent is so often compromised to make a commercial disc.
The quality of this disc is outstanding musically as well as vocally !
I did enjoy the "Hell Bent For Leather" portion more than "the Rockin'" segment. I liked the old cowboy themes for what they are and the fact that they are definitive.
If you like classic cowboy music and good old vocals then get this disc !!

4 out of 5 stars the way they should sound.......2007-03-09

I'm not too fond of the Rockin half. I've only heard of a couple of the songs, I love the "Hell Bent for Leather" part. The songs are from my childhood. Frankie Laine has a great voice so I do like to hear him sing.
My Mom sang along with him, so this is a good memory.
I've heard songs from the second half on other records and they just don't sound the same as the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin'/ Hell Bent For Leather.......2006-02-21

Frankie Laine at his best!! Perfect for anyone who loves the "old" music!

5 out of 5 stars Another great performer who's defined by what he isn't.......2005-10-09

Mention Frankie Laine and most people think of somebody who appeared on TV too much, and especially as some clueless sap who recorded the title tune for the vulgar movie sitcom "Blazing Saddles," and that's that. That's not that. Laine was a powerhouse, and if his emoting may not appeal to all listeners, we cannot deny his magnetism. A man who co-wrote the outstanding "We'll Be Together Again" deserves his plaudits.

Inevitably some double albums mesh the unmeshable, and while this entire disc is quite entertaining, the first album is the better. Where "Hell Bent for Leather!" is Laine in his "yeeeeee-HAH!" mode (another reason the stereotype sticks too rigidly to him), slickly and conventionally led by Johnny Williams (before he became Erich Wolfgang Korngold -- er, John Williams), "Rockin'" is a first-rate jazz album, and proves that with the right song and the right backing no one could surpass him. You have to wonder why Laine hasn't gotten his due. Is it the Mitch Miller angle? The fact that he recorded "I Believe"? Whatever, it's unjust, and anyone who brings two open ears to this recording will discover a supreme entertainer.

5 out of 5 stars A Great CD For All Music Lovers!.......2001-12-18

This a wonderful CD and serves as a great intro to Classical Music for the novice. It's also an audiophile favorite in that it's beautifully recorded and mastered and will bring out the best in a fine stereo sytem.

5 out of 5 stars Tai Ay Yippe Yippe Ay.......2001-10-26

This is Eric Kunzel's ROUND-UP (like always his arrangements are excellent). This CD will grab you from the start and transport you to the great expanses of the American west.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT CD WITH THE TRUE FLAVOR OF THE MOVIES........2000-08-29

This recording captures the feel and excitement of the original soundtracks. Especially fine are the arrangements from THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, HOW THE WEST WAS WON, and THE BIG COUNTRY. The Cincinnati Pops plays with great depth and feeling. A real must-own cd for any fan of great symphonic movie scores.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just Music, But a Full Experience.......2000-07-17

This album is extremely beautiful to listen to, but it transcends mere music: it will transport you back in time and leave you feeling as if you've actually lived in the Old West. You'll hear the crickets and crackling campfire, and almost see the bright stars in the giant night sky over the lonesome prairie. You'll sample the romance and beauty--and the excitement and violence--of the times. And you'll gain an admiration for the men--real and mythical--who were the last generation of galant heroes. This is a true work of genius! I heard it for the first time six years ago when I borrowed it from a local library, and I've spent untold hours since then searching music stores, looking for a copy to buy. Even here at Amazon, it didn't appear to be available (not coming up in searches) when I finally stumbled upon it by tracing a path of other works by the same conductor. But, trust me, it was worth every minute of the effort! Do yourself a favor and check this out. (And if you enjoy it, then also consider getting the "Songs of the West--Volume 4" which has a great sampling of original movie & TV western theme songs.) Happy trails!

5 out of 5 stars This was the first cd I ever bought!.......2000-05-02

When I got my first cd player in college during the beginning of fall semester, this was the cd I immediately ran out to buy. My friends in the apartment down the hall also owned this cd and we would spend hours blasting the mooing cows back and forth at one another. I was certain our hallmates were not very happy about this situation until one day when there was loud mooing coming out of another apartment at us. By the end of spring finals, there were dozens of people in the building who owned the cd and we had group "mooings". Boy were we crazy college kids.

Anyway, aside from the cows on track one, this is a great addition to your collection if only for the wonderful lush renditions of "The Magnificent Seven", "How the West Was Won" and "Big Country." I get chills running up and down my spine listening to it.

Album Description

Three CD set from the popular vocalist of the '40s and '50s who successfully straddled the line between Jazz vocalist, crooner and Western singer. After his initial success as crooner and Jazz vocalist in the mid-to-late '40s, Laine switched gears when he signed up with Columbia Records and began recording Country & Western Pop. Laine's husky baritone was a perfect match for tracks like 'Rawhide', 'Gunfight At The OK Corral', 'Sixteen Tons', 'High Noon' and other like-minded audio treats. While sales remained good in the States, his popularity increased in the UK and Europe, who adored his Easy Listening musical tales of the dusty roads of the Old West and the aching pains of a broken heart. This triple disc set features 60 of the finest of his '50s recordings for Columbia

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good collection covering decades of Laine's career........2007-06-12

Frankie Laine was one of the best when it came to the themes for many westerns. This collection of three CDs contains other good styles which show facets of his career I was not familiar with. I am a long-time fan of his theme songs, but this collection was enjoyable throughout.

1 out of 5 stars " NOT THE ORIGINAL VERSIONS".......2007-04-06

Stay away from this set if you want the original versions for these are all later re-recorded versions. I bought this mainly for one song called " Don't Make My Baby Blue " and was throughly disgusted when I heard it. I have the original on a 45 record and believe me the cd version is definitely different. None of the songs on this set are the original.

5 out of 5 stars A classic even when he's dead by now R.I.P........2007-03-11

I'm a collector of music, no matter time or type, but this collection of Frankie Laine is the only one that contains all the classics, including Blowing Wild. Maybe this song is not classic for everybody, but in Chile you consider it in the Top 5 of Frankie.
If you have to choice only one CD of the late Frankie Laine, this is it!. This is the one!. No more "greatest hits" that includes "all", except the one you want or you need...
Good Choice...!!!

4 out of 5 stars Worth the money.......2007-03-09

These discs have many of my favorite Frankie Laine hits and some numbers I've never heard before. Of all the Laine discs out there, these seem to have the most bang for the buck. I was particularly attracted to this set because it includes "The Gandy Dancers Ball." That number is not usually included in the Frankie Laine compilations, but I enjoy it more every time I hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Cowboy way.......2007-02-09

Frankie Laine was mainly known for Pop hits in the 50s and 60s, now looked at as "eldermusik". But this album showed his folk music side, taking some very old songs, updating them slightly, and providing good music. If you like the Old West, this is a must have, along with Marty Robbins' western album. Just good cowboy music, minus the country twang, about real cowboys' lives. Very good listening including some pop.

2 out of 5 stars NO ORIGINAL VERSIONS.......2004-10-19

This CD appeared like it was a good collection of songs, but NONE of them are the original versions. It should be assumed that any collections or greatest hits album contains the originals, not remakes, but the product description made no mention of this. A real disappointment.
