Customer Reviews:
Promising collection of songs, but recording defective........2007-07-16
I purchased the CD based on the song selection and a previous listen to a copy belonging to someone else. The copy I received had the recording defect several other people have mentioned--constant, loud static over all of the music. I returned it and have not tried my luck again. It's a bummer because I like the music but the defect is too distracting and not unique to the disc I received.
DO NOT BUY THIS CD, it is defective.......2007-06-30
I ignored the other reviewers and bought this disk. Oops! They are right, there is a obvious buzz running through every song. I cannot believe that they still sell this. What a shame, I really wanted a collection from her!
Defective Recording.......2007-02-19
I am a big fan of Tracy Chapman and I bought "Collection" in Feb 2007 with great anticipation. However, from my experience and the reported feedback of at least one earlier purchaser, I strongly recommend thinking twice before buying this CD. We have each found a major recording defect in the CD. It immediately manifests itself as a loud, rapid and persistent stacatto tick superimposed over the music. Unfortunately, the record label has not yet effectively (as of 2/12/2007) recalled the inventory so new buyers at least through that date may get a defective CD like I just did. The good news is that the seller immediately authorized return of the defective product. As a fan of Tracy Chapman, I regret this has occurred. I am also disappointed in not having the CD.
Static thoughout the CD.......2007-02-04
I played the replacement CD and there it is still static throughout it. I am fustrated. I purchased it for a Christmas present. I gave it 1 star because that is the lowest star there is. If I could rate it zero stars, I would. Please, either make sure before sending the CD that it is not defective or send my money back.
Her music is truely an art form.......2007-01-20
If you are a person who is in to lyrics, if you have a special appreciation for music that is really about something, that really wants to say something, then don't hesitate to buy this cd. She talks about life in the words to her songs, that in my opinion rates up there with the likes of artists like Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, and James Taylor. The way she puts her songs together makes you see it or remember it as though she had painted it on canvas and you are visually observing what she is talking about.

Customer Reviews:
FUN CD.......2007-04-03
This is a great CD for all festive occasions. The Pogues are a timeless band and this is a great CD if you are new to these amazing Irish Rockers.
What more can you ask for?.......2006-09-06
Those beer hall singers and prodigal sons of Ireland have been most excellently packaged into what is indeed an "Ultimate Collection," not only of their greatest hits but of a live performance at Brixton Academy. The songs travel far and wide, with hints of Zydeco, Bluegrass, as well as homages to the old country with the gruff voice of Shane MacGowan. Some called this Anglo-Irish band Celtic Punk, others Celtic Fusion, but whatever you want to call their inimitable style of music, it is just plain fun. The band has been around since 1982, originally known as Pogue Mahone. If you know a little bit of Gaelic, you will figure it out. There is plenty to draw from in this collection. For those new to the Pogues this is the best place to start.
Excellent Beginner's Guide + Live Celebration.......2006-08-10
If there is little or no Pogues in your collection, and there most certainly should be, this could be a great place to start, as disc one gathers all their most influential material; the singles, key album tracks and even a B-side (The Repeal Of The Licensing Laws), while the soul of the band is laid bare on the second disc, the previously unreleased reunion concert that took place over two legendary nights at the Brixton Academy on the lead up to Christmas 2001, with Shane MacGowan back with the band for nearly all the lead vocals (so far as I can tell Spider Stacy takes the lead on Tuesday Morning, Terry Woods sings Young Ned of The Hill, Phil Chevron sings his own Thousands Are Sailing and Lila MacMahon guests with Shane on a rousing Fairytale Of New York), and the band themselves, augmented by the Fiesta Horns, on excellent, sometimes riotous form.
The only obvious omission that I can see is their first single, Dark Streets Of London; however as this is on Red Roses For Me, which you will doubtless be acquiring shortly after playing disc one, this is not a great problem. It would have been an idea, though, to have included the original single as this differed from the album version and is hard to find.
A few notes about which versions have been used where more than one exists: Rainy Night In Soho is the remix that first appeared on the CD release of the Poguetry In Motion EP (the original vinyl mix seems to be unavailable on CD). The Irish Rover, If I Should Fall From Grace With God and A Pair Of Brown Eyes are all the remixed single edits; The Boys From The County Hell is the cleaned-up single version. Only Rainy Night In Soho is duplicated on the expanded editions of the parent albums.
Give Best of as a Gift, Keep Live CD for Yerself.......2006-01-17
Can't really say what hasn't been said previously and say it better, so in short, yeah, the best of is pretty much a toss off if you have all of the albums or one of the many best ofs available in import and domestic formats. The real treat here is the live reunion disc, squashing the inferior, band-disowned _Streams of Whiskey_ like the corn that went into many a bottle of Jameson's that's gone down MacGowan's throat. And when Shane goes off for a break (read: drink), you get Spider Stacy's beautiful post-Shane "Tuesday Morning." Buy it and listen to it 'til we see El Maria once again.
Signed,
epsteinsmutha
brings it all back.......2005-05-11
This is a fabulous offering. The compilation cd is a good place to start if you are new to their music but the real gem is the live cd contained in this package which brings all the atmosphere of their shows straight back. I worked front-stage at some of their gigs in Leeds (UK) in the eighties. If you remember them from then, this is an essential cd for you. The frenzied music, the heat coming off the crushed audience and the stench of sweat.Shane barely able to stand as he drinks and drinks and growls out his wonderful songs. The front rows of the audience 'Shane Shane - give us a drink !!'singing their hearts out to every tune. Most of the classics are on the live cd. 'Rainy night in Soho','Streams of Whiskey' and 'If..' stand out for me.Play it loud and have your spirits lifted every time you hear it.Absolutely brilliant.

Best Branigan compilation from the Northern Hemisphere!!.......2007-03-28
The late Laura Branigan had a remarkably worldwide fan base, with several greatest hits albums in countries ranging from South Korea, Brazil, Japan, Germany, and 2 in South Africa (and that was before the U.S. even had one!).
This PLATINUM COLLECTION is the best new compilation of her work since her death in 2004. While there are a few tracks that are glaringly absent (e.g., "Cry Wolf", "Hold Me", "Forever Young", singles from 1993's OVER MY HEART album, etc.), it is a good selection of her work. Better yet, these tracks are remastered!
Again, this is not a perfect selection (the ones from South Africa had the best selections), this album is the best one in years, certainly better than the BEST OF BRANIGAN that was released in the U.S. in 1995.
If you must limit yourself to one Branigan album and you do not want shell out the money for the ones from South Africa, the PLATINUM COLLECTION from the U.K. is your best choice!
Tell Laura I Love Her.......2007-02-14
To me, no collection could ever be complete without including every track Laura ever recorded. Hit or not, that is only spectulation by our obsession with the cencors of what is hot or not. Radio does not play the whole impact of what the public really enjoys listening to. Key words, "enjoys listening to, not what we are forced to hear on radio. Laura shall live on in the musical soundtrack of our lives.
Great Album!.......2007-01-11
Great compliment of songs and definitely a collector's dream. Can't recommend it any higher!!!
Good collection of a great singer's hits and album tracks........2006-12-19
Laura Branigan, a New York singer with a big, beautiful voice and dark sultry looks, tore up the charts in the early to mid 80s with a mix of europop style dance hits and soft rock ballads. Hindered by bad management, a label that though supportive, didn't know exactly what niche to market her to, and personal drama (divorce, drugs, lawsuits), her platinum status days didn't last, and she was all too soon forgotten. A pity, because Branigan was a top notch vocalist, with emotional range, phrasing and delivery that blow away all the screaming "divas" of today.
This Rhino produced compilation of hits and stand-out album tracks is perhaps the best selection of her work to date: it sounds great and offers some interesting song choices besides the chart hits (all here, for the most part). Wisely, the focus seems to be on the earlier years, when the lovely Branigan was at her peak. The inclusion of Satisfaction (a single in Germany) is a nice touch, although I'm puzzled by the omission of Maybe Tonight (a UK and Germany single which even has a video). A fine collection at any rate, and perhaps we'll even see the complete Self Control album remastered by Rhino with bonus tracks!
THE Laura Branigan hits collection! .......2006-09-25
Few people remember Laura Branigan's first hit single, "All Night With Me." It reached #60 a few months before the career-establishing megasmash "Gloria" hit the airwaves and shot to #2. That first hit has been so forgotten, in fact, that both Branigan's U.S. hits collections ("The Best of Branigan" and "Essentials") completely ignore the tune. Happily, this UK compilation presents the song, along with most of Branigan's other Hot 100 entries. "All Night With Me" is a great record, and it's a real treat that it has finally been remastered and presented on a hits CD.
With that said, this is THE Laura Branigan collection to own. The hits everyone knows are here ("Gloria," "Solitaire" and "Self Control"), along with smaller but solid hits like "The Lucky One," "Power of Love" and "Spanish Eddie." And of course, Branigan's #1 smash "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" from 1983 is here. And all these hits sound crisp and layered with the superb mastering job provided by Heathmans Studios.
There are a few head-scratchers, of course. Where is the hit "Hold Me"? Granted, it hit low in the Hot 100, but it was a hit and is a sexy, vibrant record. Instead of this song, or the single "Cry Wolf," listeners get two rather negligible ballads ("If You Loved Me" and "Lovin' You Baby") from Branigan's 1982 debut album and "Silent Partners," an okay song from Branigan's 1984 album. These tracks' inclusion is extra annoying, because all the material from Branigan's splendid and thoughtful 1993 "Over My Head" album is ignored.
Still, this is the very best Laura Branigan hits collection that has ever been available. The lovely, late vocalist sounds astonishing on every song, especially "Solitaire" (what a range!!!). Let's hope that someday a record label (read: Rhino) will make a two-CD collection of her work that includes all the hits, rare tracks and choice album tracks, like "Shadow of Love," one of Branigan's best recorded performaces.

ALMOST...Platinum.......2007-03-25
Of course you can never please EVERYBODY with "best of" collections.
And this IS a darn good collection. HOWEVER,...
It would have been perfection to have included the following songs:
1) I'M A LITTE BIT LONESOME
2) I DON'T WANNA MAKE LOVE (with anyone else but you)
(if this song does'nt get you in "the mood" ..you're clinically dead)
3) THE ROOM AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS (ditto)
This would have made it KILLER Platinum! But I give credit for at least finally putting more of Eddie's great songs out there on CD. It's about time. Now a double- CD GOLD collection would be nice too!
(I know,..we're just never satisfied!)
!
Eddie Rabbitt at his best.......2007-03-02
I've been waiting quite a while for a compilation of Eddie Rabbitt songs to come along. Most of what has been out there has been his "crossover" music, and those of us with true Rabbitt ears knows that the crossover songs are his weakest. This is a great collection of his best and a long time in coming. It's recorded well too. The one song I'm sorry isn't on here? "Long Gone". But all in all they caught all the others, and some are a bit obscure so it's great they included them. A must for any Eddie Rabbitt fan!
Best Eddie Rabbitt compilation currently available.......2006-12-22
I bought this CD recently and I must say that I'm quite pleased with it. Granted there are a few major hits missing like "Step By Step", "You And I" (duet with Crystal Gayle) and "Someone Could Lose A Heart Tonight" but it's probably the most comprehensive Eddie Rabbit "best of" compilation available in the market at the moment and the sound quality is quite good too. Rabbitt recorded under various labels and until someone manages to untangle all the contractual issues, don't expect to find a complete Eddie Rabbitt hits compilation anytime soon! By the way this CD is issued by Rhino in collaboration with Warner Music U.K. Ltd.
Great collection, but a great song is missing!.......2006-12-05
"Step by step" is my favorite Eddie Rabbitt's song. When I was a young boy I used to sing it to my myself every time I was about to date a "too beautiful to touch" girl. Some times I succeeded, thanks to Rabbitt's encouraging lyrics. So I regret Platimun Collection lacking it. But, however, it's a very good choice.

Customer Reviews:
NOT EXACTLY A PHILLY CHEESE STEAK BUT..... .......2007-03-01
It's tasty enough. Philadelphia International 12" Singles brings together some of the 12" singles released by the legendary record label during disco's heyday of the late 70's and early 80's. Most of the long tracks on here are fairly obscure and may not be obvious to many fans of the label.
What's cool about this set is that many of tracks does not sound like the trademark Philly International sound (a la "I love Music"). Instead, it showcases a different side to philly international with a wide range of songs. "Strut your funky stuff" is a cool slice of euro dance, "Goldmine" is one of the funkiest long players released by the label, "Let's Clean up the Ghetto" has a charging bassline that's every bit as demanding as the singers plea for neighborhoods to come together and clean it up, "Aint got time for nothin" is a smooth hybrid of the trademark PIR strings and an Earth Wind and Fire style bassline and vocals. "Put our Heads Together" finds the O Jays adapting to the 80's gracefully, and who haven't heard "You gonna make me love somebody else" and "Ain't no Stopping us Now".
There are some ocassional dull patches such as Jocko's "Rocketship" (If you're able to endure his corny attempt at rapping, the rhythm track is funky enough to make you not wanna press the skip button) and "Rhythm Talk". "Let me be Good to you" is a lightheated throw away and could've been replaced with a far superior 12" track such as Teddy P's "Only You".
While showcasing a different side to philly International is a amirable move, it does so at the expense of consistency in terms of sound. While the album is generally solid from start to finish, the tracks seem patchy and throwed together with a whiplash change in sounds and tones from track to track. Taken all at once, it can be a bit much to handle. Taken in moderation, you'll truly see how good a lot of these songs are.
Not only does the tacky pacing of the songs hold this album back from being better than it could've been, It's the quality of the songs. This anthology is not as climatic as it appears to be since many of the these songs are not lost masterpieces. Only a handful of these songs can actually go down as PIR classics. Sure there's plently of highlights on this album, but most of them don't match the unforgettable quality
of the classics PIR songs that we're familiar with.
The patchy track flow and the quality of the songs make PIR 12" Singles sound like "Bonus Tracks" to a great album more so than a definitive anthology. Make no mistake, its enough highlights and good rarities to make it worth checking out and having in your collection. This album can best be described as a philly cheese steak without a lot of grease. It taste good but its not the same!
At last.......2007-01-05
After an excellent collection «Motown disco» we've got now an excellent collection «Philadelphia disco». 21 tracks are from the period 1977-1979 and two from the 80's. Some songs were hard to find like «You gonna make me love somebody else» (8:00) by the Jones Girls, «I'll never forget my favorite disco» (5:37) by Dexter Wansel featuring the Jones Girls or «It's critical» (6:30) by Billy Paul. Of course we have «Ain't no stoppin' us now» by McFadden & Whitehead in its 10+ minutes form. Frantique's «Strut your funky stuff» version is the UK remix (5:45 instead of 6:15) and Jean Carn's «Was that all it was» is the original 12" version (6:27 and not 7:44 like it's written on the cover). Talking about Jean Carn, why do we have «Don't let it go to your head», a 1978 song in its lp form (no 12" is available anyway) and not «What's on your mind», a 1979 song extended to 5:45 for the 12"s B-side of «Was that all it was» ?
THE Philadelphia International 12" singles collection........2006-12-01
Philadelphia International Records began making "Disco" records long before anyone defined the genre and this superb collection brings us the extended 12" single versions of all-time classics by such legends as The O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Jean Carn, The Jones Girls, Jerry Butler and Lou Rawls (among others) as well as some relatively obscure tracks by little-known artists. Tony Rounce's extensive liner notes are both very informative and round out the package nicely. Customer Reviews:
Gino Vannelli Ultimate Collection--is pretty close to the ultimate collection.......2006-07-10
This is a great CD for the true Gino Vannelli aficionado. It hits many of the highlights of his musical career from 1973 to 1998. For me it is a nostalgic walk through the decades highlighted by his music. I'm very pleased that it has so many tracks from his early 70's albums (Powerful People & Gist of the Gemini) AND that it also includes tracks from the 90's albums (Yonder Tree & Slow Love) as well because so many people think Gino's music ended after Black Cars in the 80's. At some point it will need to be updated again to include the albums from this decade as well.
very versatile Musician.......2006-04-17
Gino Vannelli always had alot of versatility in his music over the years. I just wanna stop, living inside myself, wheels of life,etc... showcase not only his smooth vocal phrasing, but also his Arrangements&strong key sense of character within a groove. He is a very underrated musician to me.this is a good overall overview of his career.I dig the mixes&whatnot. very right collection.
Molto grato (almost three hours of pleasure).......2005-07-13
This is probably the most complete compilation of all the "best of" collections of Vannelli songs released up to now.
Vannelli's career can be sliced in three pieces. The first era goes from his debut record Crazy life to his mega seller Brother to brother. It is the better known one, where he was releasing an album every year (6 from 73 to 78), hitting the charts and being considered as a sex-symbol by many ladies. "Felicia", "Love of my life", and mostly "I just wanna stop" are in fact still played every now and then on the radio.
Slice number 2 goes from Nightwalker to Unconsolable man, a period where there is more time space between each release, where Gino has problems with record labels (he wanted to release his stuff and the companies wanted to get more juice out of the Vanelli product after the success of Brother to Brother), and where he goes into an introspective phase. Even with the poppy Black cars, there is a clear musical shift.
Phase number three includes three albums in ten years : Yonder tree (a jazz album), Slow love (almost all ballads) and Canto (opera oriented, with songs in Spanish, French and Italian, and not featured on this collection). Vannelli now makes music the way he wants it, for a minority (by that meaning a reduced and specific audience), and he is practically retired from public life (last time I saw him in concert was in 95).
All that being said, this triple cd contains all the songs mentioned above, practically distributed in the three periods described (one per cd). The sound is sensational. Even the "old" Crazy Life is completely revamped (the original recording sounded so outdated...) making it a terrific journey, even for people like me who have almost everything he released (I kept out of my collection Big dreamers never sleep, despite the songs "Wild horses" and "Persona non grata"). Note that you get an extended version of "Black cars" and several cuts from his Live in Montreal cd. The only song unfairly left out is "Put the weight on my shoulders".
So, as often said in these cases, this release is what you need if you don't have anything from Vannelli and want most of his best cuts, OR if some pieces are missing in your collection, OR if you are a big fan of Gino Vanelli. Once you get this, despite the price, I would recommend you to get A pauper in paradise; side "B" (the album was first released in vinyl format, 1977) is played with the London Philarmonic and that is worth the ticket by itself.
Gino Vannelli.......2004-01-25
IN THREE WORDS....."ITS GINO VANNELLI" 'nuff said!!!!!

Ugh!.......2007-07-01
I was looking for music for an island theme party. The selection looked fun -- a lot of recognizable summer party songs with the steel drum flair. But then I bought it and actually listened to it. The steel drum parts are really good; however, the synthesized accompaniment is over powering and really cheesy (it sounds like it should be on Barney). Please, save your money and look elsewhere.

We listen to this CD while we are swimming in the pool or just hanging out with neighbors on our deck. It is great background music and makes you feel like you are on vacation.

Definitive Blancmange.......2007-07-07
I used to own the previous "Best Of Blancmange" which is a good compilation, however this release exceeds it in terms of song selection and sound quality. This version is remastered and the sound is crisp and clear just like other titles from the same series. Unfortunately, Blancmange was one of those underrated new wave band of the 80s; yet it is still essential to people who love this kind of music from this era. The CD is packed with their best songs such as 'Living On The Ceiling", "Waves", "Blind Vision", "Don't Tell Me" and the 1984 remake of Abba's "The Day Before You Came" presented here in full lenght album version.
Last but not least, if you like Depeche Mode, Erasure, Duran Duran, Alphaville, A-ha... the list is long, you won't be disappointed with this CD. In addition, the price is so appealing! A must.
Snap, Crackle and Synth Pop! A Retro Treat for the Ears........2007-01-16
If you like stuff like Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, Erasure, Naked Eyes, Human League and Talk Talk than you will enjoy this great forgotten band too. They obviously weren't the biggest hitmakers of the 80s, but their tunes are pretty infectous and have aged pretty darn well. This complilations has all of the singles and more. Admittingly, a few tracks are skippable, but considering how rare their studio albums are to find, I'm willing to bump my review of this album up to five stars! Plus, the re-mastering job will knock your socks off. Blancmange has never sounded better!

happy customer.......2007-01-14
What a wonderful CD! I could almost feel the sand between my toes. The quality of sound was way beyond my expectations.
Carnival Steel Drum Collection.......2006-03-21
I bought two of the series. I originally heard them playing as background music in a local store but they were out of the titles I wanted. I found them on amazon.com and ordered them.
The sound quality and musicianship is excellent. The CDs make good background music or music for relaxing. I often play them on my boat while anchored.
