Is Love Enough?

About the Artist
Biography Nanette Natal b. 10 June 1945, Brooklyn, New York. Nanette Natal's singing career began as a teen in the 1960s with the Helen Hayes Young People's Theater Guild. She then went on to work the Bitter End Coffee House Circuit and such venues as the Gaslight, The Orpheum Theatre, Bottom Line and the Cafe Au Go Go, and recorded with Vanguard and EVOLUTION records. Performing her own material, which developed into blues and rock, she accompanied herself with a guitar and toured universities and concert halls throughout the country.
In the late 70s while singing Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" during a pop recording session at Columbia Records, she changed the phrasing dramatically and subsequently was told by a prominent engineer that she had the soul of a jazz singer. This moment was a turning point in Nanette's musical life. Stifled creatively by a string of recording contracts, Nanette set out on a path of developing her own production company, Benyo Music Productions.
In the early 80s, she became a strong influence on the New York Downtown jazz loft scene, with long stints at the Tin Palace and Seventh Avenue South.
Compared all the time to Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald for an incredible vocal range and scatting ability respectively, she is one of the most extraordinary singers and live performers today. The measure of her success has always been about the integrity of the art.
Her main inspirational sources have been Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Henry Mancini and Duke Ellington. Nanette Natal is also a composer of considerable merit. DISCOGRAPHY: My Song of Something (1980/reissue 2003), Wild in Reverie (1982), Hi Fi Baby (1986), Stairway to the Stars (1992), Lose Control (1999), Is Love Enough? (2001) and It's Only a Tune (2004).
Album Description
Nanette Natal continues to explore the myriad possibilities of the voice as a jazz instrument and how it can be used to express human emotions and feelings through song. She does this by placing familiar material into a much different environment than it is usually presented, and through her compositions, which create imaginative and challenging settings for her vocals. The resourceful use of instruments is an important adjunct to Natal's objective of concocting new and different listening sensations. Natal turns Irving Berlin's light romantic fluff "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" into an intense, dramatic tableau, complete with pulsating bongos and inventive wordless vocalizing. Intensity is also in the forefront for her on "Is Love Enough?," whose somber background is created with the help of Melanie Yarger's cello. Her approach to "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean" combines the theatrics of Sarah Vaughan and the sassiness of a Ruth Brown piece. Facile instrumentation once more comes into play when Tim Ferguson repeats the same bassline held on by Jeff McErlain's twanging Delta blues-like guitar rests, all embossed by whoops and hollers from Natal. This one is quite breathtaking. The medley from West Side Story has Natal swinging backed solely by bass and brushes. "Moon River" is sung like a gospel hymn, with Gary Schreiner accorded solo space for his plaintive harmonica. Natal continues to demonstrate her ability to arrange familiar material altogether differently without it sounding contrived or forced. She makes her artistic point without having to rely solely on her own work. Her interpretations of standard material are legitimate and thoroughly engrossing. Pianist Richard Wyands' sympathetic piano makes a major contribution to the success of this recommended album. - AMG

Customer Reviews:
Witty and Charming.......2000-08-15
This CD is fun and action packed as much as you could hope for in a CD. He uses quotes from many famous folk and classical songs and implements them into his own compositions with a bit of a twist. For example, in Classical rap, where he raps about being the best rapper in the world with terrific brass interludes between the verses. The orchestra plays a clip from Vivaldi's "Spring" and then he twists it into a record "wicky-wicky" to the same tune. He introduces every peice before it is played in a hilarious manner in which he talks about the peice and something else that was going on in the composers mind as he wrote the peice. Starting at the begining-
This is Professor Pete- Peter Schickele introduces himself as well as P.D.Q.
1712 Overture- A takeoff of the 1812 overture of course, with snatches of some famous folktunes thrown in here and there.
Oedipus Tex- A parady of the Greek Myth Oedipus Rex where he murders his father who is the King. Oedipus Tex lives a life like his brother but in Texas style.
The next tracks are more comedy than exactly music like the WTWP station giving options over the phone about how you would like to hear a certain peice of music. Cooking French... is a woman cooking a French gourmet meal but flubbing up the entire time.
What I have already said pretty much sums it up. The rest of the tracks are equally hilarious and as witty as all the others. If you buy this CD you will not regret it no matter what type of music you listen to.

Album Description
The jaunty Gene DePaul score for the musical play "Lil' Abner" based on the comic strip by Al Capp is heard instrumentally - and it's quite a show! "Broadway Bouquet" from 1965 is an important part of the famed Faith "string" album series - perhaps the pinnacle of his rich string sound that spanned gorgeous melodies and counterlines across sections of the large orchestra. (Bill Halvorsen)
Album Description
Pianist Percy Faith, a pioneer of the Easy Listening genre, had a successful and lengthy career as the in-house conductor and arranger for Columbia Records. Faith was renowned for his musical interpretations of Broadway and motion picture music. These two reissues from Collectables on 1 CD were originally released in 1965. 24 tracks. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
It's not stereo.......2005-01-10
I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.
classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16
Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.
Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.
Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!
Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2006-03-09
First of all, I'm a big Switchfoot fan. I also occasionally enjoy classical music. I've even enjoyed previous string tributes to other bands. Strung Out on OK Computer comes to mind, as well as a Pink Floyd tribute.
But this just doesn't work for me. I liked maybe two of the songs on here, the rest sounded cheesy and pretentious. I ended up giving my copy away to my little brother for Christmas. :o)
And I don't even know what "The Sharing of Tries" is.
For the complete Switchfoot Fan.......2005-10-11
Most people will enjoy this album if they are fans of Switchfoot's older music. Although the album has a few hits from "The Beautiful Letdown", most of the CD features hits from earlier albums. My only complaint about the album, is that it is an entirely digital recording from what I hear. The songs are not performed by a real string quartet. If you are a fan of classical music then this might bother you, otherwise it is a pretty good album.
Another good one!.......2005-06-05
I'm not a big fan of Switchfoot...but this Quartet versions of these songs are amazing. I think this album takes Switchfoot's songs to a whole new level and improves upon their composition. Switchfoot should do more work with strings, especially if the outcome is as great as this!
Very awesome String-Quartet Tribute.......2005-04-03
This is my favorite String-Quartet Tribute so far. If you're a fan of Switchfoot (and definately orchestra type instrumentals) you're probably going to like this. Songs like Meant To Live, Dare You To Move, Learning To Breathe, Chem 6A, and some of your other favorites are all here. This was the second type of these String Tributes I heard, and I was very impressed. This isn't the switchfoot your used to with singing and guitar, but replaced with violins and cello's and that sort. Even though an odd replacement, it's just as good as the original Switchfoot and gives you a different hear on the music. 2 thumbs up.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT RECORDING, BUT THE PRICE..........1999-12-01
This is 20th century opera at its most vivid. Once considered a failure, Osud was resurrected in an English translation that actually improves upon the original libretto. The music is as vital as anything in Janacek: the piece starts a churning riff strangely reminiscent of Philip Glass; the ending is equally memorable -- startlingly brusque and humorous. Throughout, we get musical drama tied to the quick of spoken language; conversations overlap, or suddenly fall silent. At times the story is ridiculous, but the production rides over any problems. Philip Langridge, as always, is great. My only qualm: this was originally a single disc CD on EMI, for a single disc price. Though the package is nice, the price is steep for some 70:00 odd minutes.

This Isn't Enough For Me!!!.......2005-12-29
I own several George Duke CD's and really like them all. For some reason I don't care for any of the songs up to track 11 on this one....How About You, Laid Back Sunday, and Thinkin' About You... are the best selections. Other than that this isn't enough for me!!!
GREAT release.......2004-06-20
I absolutely love George Duke's "Is love enough?" Cd. While not all songs are 5 stars for me, the prelude, interlude and postlude are amazing. Other tracks which I can listen to over and over again are "It's Summertime" ( talk about the right sound for an open air party in summer), "Love Songs" and the fooonky "Kinda Low" with Ndugu Chancler being a stand out. Funk master-drummer!
GET IT for a great mix of Smooth Jazz/R&B and Funk.
An astronomical reward........2001-08-13
GEORGE DUKE has done it again. To me, love is MORE than enough! This CD is astronomically jazzy. I ABSOLUTELY love the prelude, "Into the Future", the interlude "Space and Time", and ESPECIALLY the postlude "Back to the Future". The CD is not only sophisticated, it is also classy, sexy (in its own way), and cerebral. This CD is TRULY an asronomical reward. This CD ABSOLUTELY deserves an award.
too much.......1999-05-02
This collectionlacks cohesion and the great Duke spirit that shines so brightly on other releases. I wish 'Thief in the Night' would be released on cd. that one, along with 'Night After Night', are a couple of my favorites. I noticed that 'Night After Night' isn't on this list either, but other entrys such as 'Don't Let Go', 'Master of the Game', 'Reach For It", and 'Rendezvous' are here ...and they are all GREAT!
Excellent mix of talent and music. Can' t stop listening!.......1998-09-18
Have followed George Duke over the years as he continues the expected high quality and innovative exploration of the art form. This CD is really for great listening with its variety, artists displaying different music styles. Truly a must have!

French songs of Celine Dion.......2007-05-12
A great recording for any fan of Celine Dion
very beautifulvoice of her
love when she put passions to sing
esp. in her native French language.
Highly recommended!
DON'T BE SCARED OFF!.......2006-11-17
I really feel that you do not have to know French to " feel" this album. In this sense its a album that transcends language. Don't be afraid IF you do not speak French! If you are a purest then this ranks right up there with the magesty that the voice of Edith Piaff commanded in her day. Yes of course Dion is " modern day" but what is astounding is her command of her gift. The tenor of her voice shifts in multiple fashion within the songs. I beleive that you can actually feel the emotions without understanding a word. You know its from the heart....and the control is exquisite. I much prefer Dion in French. At times her voice in English can feel rushed and pressured BUT when singing in French, it is her "voice" that becomes universal. She achieves a depth that, for me at least, is not achieved in English. DONT BE SCARED OFF.
S'il Suffisait D'aimer = If Only Love Could Be Enough.......2006-09-14
Celine Dion was in her element in the mid 90's with such great albums as "The Colour Of My Love", her Grammy award winning album "Falling Into You" & the beautiful Christmas album "These Are Special Times", Celine kind of hit a wall with "Let's Talk About Love", but got back on track with "S'il Suffisait D'aimer". Celine returns to her element with another French album that is not commerical like "Let's Talk About Love" or 2003's "One Heart" which was a little bet better then "Let's Talk About Love". The album captures Celine in rare form & like always with wonderful strong vocals & very unique music on this album. If you loved "Unsion", "The Colour Of My Love", "The French Album", "Falling Into You", "A New Day Has Come" & "1 Fille & 4 Types" then you will definitely love this one!.
The Best.......2006-05-16
I'm french, and I'm enjoy you like this album, because many people thinks that you don't listen all song in french. And Jean Jacques Goldman is a big star in France, and he composes many beautyful song as "He doesn't see me" sing Sarah Brightman. If you search a beatyfull album of Jean Jacques, there is "Entre gris clair et Gris foncé", "En passant", " Chansons pour les peids", "Singulier" and "Pluriel" . And if you love very stong voice, ther's "Gang" with the song "L'envie" sing by Johny Hallyday.
Dion and Goldman...finally reunited!!!.......2006-04-05
Celine Dion's first collaboration with french megastar Jean-Jacques Goldman became a huge hit: It entered the Top 10 in the UK and is the best-selling french album in music history. Three years later, Dion and songwriting-genius Goldman got together again to create once more a wonderful, melancolic and intelligent masterpiece. As Celine got more and more commercial over the past years in her English recordings (One heart!), this album can be considered a jewel for all the fans who like Celine away from the mainstream. The incredibly poetic lyrics alone (Je crois toi, S'il suffisait d'aimer) are worth buying this record. Thanks to Jean-Jacques!

These Girls ROCK!.......2001-08-01
The tune is great, the lyrics are great, and it comes with a fact sheet inside with interesting facts about the girls. The new music preview is cool and listenable. Makes you wanna buy the album! A wise buy!
3 of Hearts- Has a Great Writer.......2001-05-21
Rarely does a new pop group come aboard with such a fine song that fits them like a glove. LOVE IS ENOUGH, written by Jim Varsos (Alaskas Hobo Jim) is the perfect ditdy to start these girls off to cyber-stardom. They still have a long way to go from shopping centers to Carnegie Hall. Still, with great writers like Jim Varsos behind them, they will continue to climb to Billboard heaven. The best thing 3 of Hearts could do is sign up Jim and a couple of other top notch writers and let them produce the material while the girls concentrate on doing what girls do best...
happy tune.......2001-05-20
"Love is Enough" is a happy tune that makes me want to roll down the car windows & sing to the top of my lungs.I have heard snippets on the cd single of other songs from their cd due out this summer, and these young girls can SING!(Check out"6-8-12"...WOW!) I especially enjoy trying to figure out which girl is singing, as they all trade leads on the verses. Then their harmonies on the chorus are SWEET! They also are beautiful girls which makes the video(on the single) a JOY to watch, too!
great country.......2001-04-19
I think their song is great! Can't wait for their CD! If there are any that like this group, they were on the CD soundtrack of Where The Heart Is. Their song is called Just Might Change Your Life.
This Is Enough.......2001-04-14
With this CD, you can easily tell that all three of the girls are vocally very talented but the song writer is not. These girls could have deserved a better song to sing.
"Love Is Enough" is basically a sweet, innocent, upbeat song thats very country influenced. Though with one listen, you can tell these girls are very talented, this isn't a very good debut single. If they're hoping to make an impression in the music buisness, they should have came out with a strong tune.
Its too early to tell though. This is just their first single and I'm sure there are many more to come along with their album. Hopefully, they would have better songs on their album.
