Roll up The Rug & Dance.......1999-09-16
The music on this CD has been around since the 30's but it holds up very well and still makes the feet dance. The sound quality is extremely good--in fact much better than you would expect for "historical" releases. I know it's hard to believe, but Dinah Shore in her early days is very effective in pulling off the songs. Lena Horne is simply OUTSTANDING. Yes it is a bit pricey for a reissue but WORTH IT!

back to where she came from..........2007-02-18
Here is the lovely Dinah Shore, performing the kind of free-spirited jazz and swing music which launched her mainstream career. This is a reissue of her successful 1965 album for the Reprise label, 'Lower Basin Street Revisited'.
When Ms Shore left Tennessee for her chance at mainstream American music success, she left behind the kind of music she performed so well. Her early albums lacked any direct link to a theme, and she found herself languising with covers of popular Hit Parade tunes; no soul, no spark. In 1965, Shore returned to her true roots and delivered what is regarded (by this reviewer at least) as her greatest album. And she clearly had a ball working with arrangers Jack Elliot, Allyn Ferguson and Johnny Mandel, who all understood the message Shore wanted to express here.
Just listen to the joyous way she tackles SHOW BOAT's "Nobody Else But Me", in an arrangement I've never heard done ever before. This is Dinah Shore, uncluttered, sparse and yet lush; a true classic.
It doesn't end there: "Chloe", "Nashville Blues", "Cry Me a River" and even "Do Re Mi" from THE SOUND OF MUSIC; all performed with fresh and new arrangements but staying true to their origins. On this wonderful album, Dinah Shore also stayed true to her's.
Highly-recommended.

Surprise, surprise.......2004-04-24
Dinah Shore's early albums, for RCA, were mostly nonentities with vague or nonexistent themes, predictable song selections and uninspired arrangements. Then she went to Capitol, which produced six outstanding albums with her, all terrific. This Reprise collection came later and is the most enterprising project she did. What can you say about an album that ends with, of all songs, "Chloe," and includes Petula-Clarkish-go-goish versions of blues songs? The producer is Sonny Burke, who indeed did some producing for Clark at Warner Brothers/Reprise, and he gave Dinah her most whimsical album. But it's also an album on which she sings with terrific style, grace and invention. Great music and great fun.
