A beautiful songbird sings.......2006-08-26
I was really surprised to find out Marilyn Monroe had a cd. Marilyn does have a very pleasant voice and she definitely has her own style. I like listening to these songs because it takes you back in time to Hollywood's golden era days. I could definitely imagine riding down the road back in the 1950's in a old Cadillac cruising to these songs. Marilyn has a pretty voice and this is a enjoyable cd, especially if you are a fan of her movies.
The Very Best of Marilyn Monroe.......2006-08-19
Great collection of songs. Very nostalgic. Marilyn had a sweet singing voice. A pleasure to hear. You'll enjoy the CD.
Pretty much all of MM's musical highlights(with some exceptions).......2005-06-21
Though not particularly known for her musical attributes, this collection of sex symbol Marilyn Monroe's vocal abilities is pleasant. Sure, she's breathy and doesn't have much range, but her innate fire and talents as an actress give some of these tunes a real kick. "After You Get What You Want" from "There's No Business Like Show Business" may be the best song Monroe was ever offered; "I'm Gonna File My Claim" and "River of No Return" are equally impressive. Two songs noticeably missing are "Runnin' Wild" from "Some Like It Hot" and a charming version of "That Old Black Magic" from "Bus Stop", which Monroe recorded in character(with a hick-town twang). Otherwise, a first-rate package.
Pretty bloody excellent...........2005-01-27
Marilyn Monroe, as an actress, I can only stand in small doses. Her movies are excellent, all of them have something worthwhile and redeeming - even the more mundane offerings like 'Bus Stop' and 'Niagra' are finely-crafted pieces of film - and the more sublime ones like 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' and 'Some Like It Hot' are honest-to-God classic examples of the comic genius of both 1950s Hollywood and Monroe herself.
For all that, however, I can still only watch the pink and fluffy Goddess for short bursts before I long for something that takes itself a little more seriously.
And that's when I turn to this!
Monroe as a singer I could listen to forever and a day. Worthy of a far higher degree of praise than popular culture has traditionally accorded her, Monroe's singing is a very rare experience indeed. Her range is impressive, and her style is actually quite thought-provoking - listen to the contrast between the bubblegum-light 'Down In The Meadow' and the melancholic, heavy 'River of no Return', and you'll appreciate the fact that, at least as a singer, Monroe was more than capable of shrugging off her Fantasy Gal image for a deeper and more developed means of communication.
This CD is particularly noteworthy for having all the classics, and also some rarer gems like 'I'm Gonna File My Claim' and 'After You Get What You Want, You Don't Want It', both great numbers that are so often omitted from Monroe anthologies and such. Her interpretation of 'A Fine Romance' is one of the best ever, and her pairing with the immaculate Jane Russel on 'Little Girl from Little Rock' is worth the price of the CD alone.
If you look at all of the most vocally revered female songstresses of this period - Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Judy Garland - all of them have very fine voices, and an unusual vocal 'hook' - Billie's high acid melancholia, Nina's deep bass ad-libbing, and Judy's rolling, emotional high notes - and Monroe is no different. Her quivery, quirky soprano is fascinating to listen to, and matches her public personality as well as Ms. Julie Andrews' voice matches hers. It brings great depth to what would otherwise have been a relatively ordinary voice - but that's an advantage true of all singers.
One to own and listen to again and again, 'The Very Best of Marilyn Monroe' is something anyone with an appreciation of female vocalists will absloutely treasure.
MARILYN AT HER BEST.......2004-07-13
I love the cd. Sound is good, and it was a treat to hear Down in the meadow and her rendition of WHEN I FALL IN LOVE, shows Marilyn had a great range. Recomended.

Forget daddy--MY heart belongs to Marilyn !!!.......2007-02-11
People were always so busy gawking at Marilyn Monroe that they failed to pay attention to the fact that she actually sang rather well. In fact, Marilyn was a talented singer. Her voice on this CD is warm, vibrant and full of a very special romantic intimacy that I have rarely heard. Moreover, Marilyn never sang a superfluous note. This CD proves it.
The CD opens strong with one of Marilyn's best known hits, "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend." The music by Jule Styne shines as Marilyn delivers a strong performance. This song is from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes; and another song from the same movie follows, "A Little Girl From Little Rock." Marilyn and Jane Russell harmonize perfectly and together their voices call out to men everywhere to attract them. "I'm Gonna File My Claim" uses a piano to give this number a honky-tonk quality as Marilyn sings about her desire to claim her man.
Other great numbers on this CD include another duet between Marilyn and Jane Russell entitled "When Love Goes Wrong-Nothing Goes Right;" a very hot and spicy rendition of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy;" "A Fine Romance" with its big band type of arrangement and the very romantic "Do It Again." Awesome!
"She Acts Like A Woman Should" reflects values some people would consider dated; but Marilyn sings this so beautifully you just might enjoy it anyway.
The CD ends just as strong as it began with "Bye Bye Baby." The chorus complements Marilyn's vocals perfectly.
Unfortunately, there are several tracks on this CD that have much too much surface noise. The digital remastering is nothing special. "I'm Gonna File My Claim;" "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" and "One Silver Dollar" need superior digital remastering. Surface noise in the digital age disappoints me; and for that I must take off one star to make this a four star review.
The liner notes include a rather brief essay about Marilyn's rise to stardom; and the striking artwork includes a beautiful picture of Marilyn while literally giving her a star for being a memorable singer.
I highly recommend this CD for Marilyn Monroe fans; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will enjoy this CD, too. If you like this CD I also recommend the CD entitled The Very Best of Marilyn Monroe and other Marilyn Monroe CDs.
Enjoy!
Marilyn lives forever in song........2006-07-29
I really don't think enough people realize just how good a singer Marilyn Monroe was. She not only sang but seemed to put her unmistakable character in each song she did. It's a pleasure just listening to her sing because you can picture her performing the song as well.
Marilyn is amazing..........2005-11-19
I love this CD, it has most of the songs from her films, my favourite being, "Diamonds are a girls best Friend." Her whisper voice is amazing (I believe she talked in a whisper because she stuttered and her voice coach taught her how to talk like that).
There are several songs that I love that weren't on this cd, "Running Wild" and "I'm through with love" from her movie, "Some Like it Hot" are two, and of course the famous song, "Happy Birthday Mr. President" that she sang to John F. Kennedy on his birthday.

One of the more impressive Marilyn CDs available.......2003-09-15
There are a good many Marilyn Monroe collections out there containing most of the same songs (there are only about three dozen Marilyn songs in all), and this is one of the more impressive ones, containing almost 38 minutes of music. Half of these 12 tracks are taken from two movies. You get all the great tracks from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, A Little Girl from Little Rock and When Love Goes Wrong, Nothing Goes Right with Jane Russell, and Bye Bye Baby. This version of Bye Bye Baby is not the version featured in the film, which makes it notable. In the movie, Marilyn only sings the final portion of the song, but here Marilyn alone sings the entire song, making it all her own. River of No Return gives us I'm Gonna File My Claim, one of my favorite Marilyn songs, as well as the less familiar but haunting One Silver Dollar - this song, despite its slightly airy sound quality, really expresses the passion and emotion that Marilyn could bring to a song.
A Fine Romance, She Acts Like a Woman Should, and the Gershwin classic Do It Again all sound wonderful against a big band backdrop, and two notable recordings from the movie Let's Make Love complete the bill. Specialization is a little-known duet Marilyn performed with Frankie Vaughan, but the real gem is Marilyn's complete 5:00 version of the Cole Porter classic My Heart Belongs to Daddy. The inclusion of One Silver Dollar, Specialization, and the complete My Heart Belongs to Daddy makes this album one of the more impressive Marilyn CDs out there.
Catchy and Collectible --Marilyn is always a classic!.......2000-12-08
An excellent collection of Marilyn's surprising talent for song. I brought this into my office and curdled all my male officemates' hormones with her sweet, breathy tones. This is definately a fun CD and a neat item to own. I've used it as a gift item myself and received thank yous from people who were quite surprised at how much they liked it.

A Near-Classic.......2007-06-13
While "There's No Business Like Show Business" is not one of Hollywood's top musicals it's still worth watching. The story is simple and entertaining. Ethel Merman, Donald O'Connor, Dan Dailey and Mitzi Gaynor are, as usual, entertaining and fun. Though Johnnie Ray tries very hard he shows that he is a singer rather than an actor. Marilyn Monroe is, at best, adequate. While she has never been one of my favorite performers she usually does a better job than she does in his movie.
Superior in all ways........2007-04-11
They certainly don't make 'em like them used to, and this film is a fine example. Excellent songs, actors, story line, costumes, etc. Superb all the way.
The real star of this film!.......2006-09-05
This is a great movie with Marilyn Monroe and Ethel Merman.
However the real star of this movie is the vivacious Mitzi Gaynor! She steals every scene she is in. She is beautiful, talented, and hard to take your eyes off of!
I recommend this movie ! I also recommend " Anything Goes"
with Mitzi Gaynor. It has just been restored and the look of it is probably the best color of any DVD I own.
ONE OF THE VERY BEST MUSICALS EVER.......2006-05-29
it surpasses many an MGM extravagansa..... I`ve been thinking.... "What and WHO does this film miss? Judy? NO! I`m mad for Judy and will always be a fighter for her and Liza.... but THIS one may be the very best musical I`ve ever seen... If I ever produced or directed a film - this would be it.....
The musical score is out of this world as are the performances, set designs, choreography, costumes and art direction...
It`s a very CinemScoped film aaaaaaaaaaaaaand for the better of it:-)))))))
Marilyn deserved a better script. Her musical numbers are a joy to watch........2005-12-15
Why did Marilyn accept such a limited role as Vicky after she was a full star in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) is hard to
explain.
Yet there are things in this movie that has caught my attention.
As soon as Marilyn appears as the Hat check girl named Vicky, she mentiones that she has just finished acting in the CHERRY
ORCHARD, a Chekov play. This movie was filmed 2 years before she
joined the Actor Studio. But at this time, she was receiving
acting lessons from Michael Chekhov, nephew of Anton Chekov the
Russian playwright who wrote the Cherry Orchard. One gets the
feeling that this dialogue in the film was ¨suggested¨by Marilyn
herself. It shows the intellectual side of Marilyn.
Her comic ability does not get many scenes. There's is a comic
scene in which she plays with the pronunciation of the word
AFTER, right before she sings her sing AFTER YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT YOU DON'T WANT IT.
Her best number is HEAT WAVE. Even today it does not look dated.
Her other number LAZY is ok, where she shares the number with
Mitzy Gaynor and Dan Dailey. I felt a more glamorous number
could have been selected here.
¨You'd be surprised¨¨ was a number deleted from the film, but it is found in many Marilyn Monroe CDs .¨In Donald O'Connor's song
A MAN CHASES A GIRL Marilyn provides a background voice. This
song was later recorded by Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds and
it became a hit.
Marilyn deserved a more comic role in this film. Walter Lang did
not know how to make good use of Marilyn's humorous ability. In
her next film, the SEVEN YEAR ITCH, Billy Wilder got a tremendous performance out of Marilyn.

Marilyn Monroe-I Wanna Be Loved By You.......2005-04-20
If you love Marilyn Monroe, want to get to know the actresses music better or have only heard 1 or 2 songs, you will love and cherish this album. Every great hit from the movies is here. Most people probably wouldn't believe she could sing so well, but her voice just shines in this great collection of songs. My personal favorites in this collection are "Kiss" from the movie Niagara, "I wanna be loved by you" from the movie Some like it hot, and "diamond's are a girls best friend" from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Once you hear these great songs, you will then understand why Marilyn Monroe was voted one of the top preformers of her era.

Bad, bad, bad - 'Let the buyer beware'.......2006-05-05
Well I guess it was my fault. A glass of wine, a wireless laptop and a comfy lounge = seriously impaired judgement. I bought this CD on a whim. I'm a great fan of remix albums, love Marilyn Monroe and thought I had found something fabulous. Sadly I must disagree with the other reviews. This CD is atrocious. Yep, they're remixes. Bad ones. No way in the world will you hear these surface at any club/dance party. Bad, bad, bad. If you were thinking "Verve Remixed 1 & 2", this is nothing like the calibre of those CD's. Full price + overseas freight + anxious wait = BIG disappointment. CD's like this justify illegal downloading.
MM Still The Goddess.......2005-11-29
At first I could not believe this. Greatest Hits? Remixed? Stil, out of curiosity, I bought it expecting a laugh a la Ethel Merman's Disco Album. Well, I guess its good to start with low expectations, because I was blown away by this delightful, spellbinding tribute to the timeless Screen Goddess. What amazed me the most was how natural MM's voice sounds in the updated remixes. These modern sounds fit her like a glove. Sure it sounds campy, but Marilyn makes it work. Standouts are Diamonds, and My Heart Belongs to Daddy. The one low point is the 6 minute version of Happy Birthday. Still, it is my favourite CD in months (and I have bought many, including Barbra's Guilty Pleasures and Madonna's Confessions.) Long live Marilyn and long live camp!
Marilyn Monroe strikes again!.......2005-09-12
It is amazing that after Marliyn's death decades ago, people are still trying to create new marketing ideas for the blonde diva.
Some of the remixes are good and it is a shame that we will probably not hear them in any club soon.
Can you imagine the cheers that will create among the attendees of a dance club, if all the sudden, out of surprise Marilyn's voice and an up-to-date mix appears in the playlist of a dance club?
A Lot of Great Fun!!!.......2005-04-27
I love this CD because the music is so dynamic and rich and is an excellent compliment to Marilyn's voice. A couple of tracks could have been done more imaginatively, but most of them are a lot of fun. I hope that this inspires other DJs to take a crack at remixing her songs as I think this CD shows that there is potential for some really incredible stuff to be done. Her voice doesn't sound dated at all and she could have been recorded yesterday.
at best a curiosity.......2005-04-10
Marilyn's original vocal tracks are almost always remixed way to the back of these tracks, with the club-beats pushed to the front. After a while, all you will hear are the drum-beats. The shame of it is that it would be interesting to hear her voice without the original instrumentation (all those 1950's violins and saxophones). But what we get here will bore you on the second listen.

Soundtrack songs minus adequate liner notes.......2007-05-30
This 2-CD set from the obscure label Rajon, first published in 2005, contains what I think are 31 soundtrack songs by Marilyn Monroe, plus the famous "Happy Birthday, Mr. President," sung to President John F. Kennedy, with his brief, amused thank you. The collection kicks off with "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," from GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (1953), written by Leo Robin and Jule Styne. Not in chronological order the songs covered come from the early LADIES OF THE CHORUS (1949), RIVER OF NO RETURN (1954), THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS (1954), SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959), LET'S MAKE LOVE (1960), among others. The last mentioned, LET'S MAKE LOVE, has a few interesting songs with the film's co-star Yves Montand and Frankie Vaughan: the title song as well as "Incurably Romantic" and "Specialization." The sound quality is acceptable but the lack of adequate liner notes is not. Aside from the song titles and composer credits, the liner notes give no information except a short, superficial biography. The running times of each disc: 55:57 and 39:46. The cover has a luscious black and white photograph of Marilyn.

If she was alive today she'd be on sell out tours..........2007-06-28
MM was a great vocalist, no doubt. If she had lived she would have done very well as a stage act - great voice, great charisma, brilliant witty interpreter of lyrics. Funny and fun. The compilation is great but some of the material on the second cd is a little pointless and repetitive.

- Meet Me in Battersea Park [Import]
- Miss Wonderful [Import] [Original recording remastered]

- Moments in My Life
- Mondo Candido: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Soundtrack]
- Mr Jones
