Strictly for Petula collectors.......2002-12-08

To even think about buying this box, you have to be a Petula fanatic. There are a few tracks here which (as far as I know) have not been previously released on CD. They provided me with sufficient excuse to buy this set, not that I really needed one, as I already owned around 40 or 50 Petula CD's.

The remastering is impeccable, but most of the tracks can be found on one or more of the equally well re-mastered compilations With all my heart (a British double-CD), You are my lucky star (a British single-CD) and Anthologie 6 (a French single-CD). If you have (at least) the two British compilations and really enjoy them, then you might think that this box is worth buying.

Apart from a few early recordings, which would be more readily available if they were considered popular enough, what you are really paying for is the packaging - including a hardback book about Petula's early recordings. This includes a comprehensive discography and plenty of pictures as well as a lot of detailed information about Petula in the fifties. Personally, I think most of the best pictures of Petula are from the sixties, but there are some lovely pictures here.

EARLY 1950s RECORDINGS FROM A YOUNG PETULA.......2004-12-30

These songs don't sound at all like the sexy, mature Petula from the mid-1960s onward. They are sweet songs from the 1950s, many of which are taken from poor quality 78 rpm discs since master tape sources are missing in several cases. For the die-hard Petula collector only or fans of innocent 50's pop.
