Customer Reviews:
A very good CD to buy.......2005-07-06
I have bought many CD regarding American patriotic songs but it is the one that I prefer. The songs are sung in a very classic way and so, there are easy to listen. Jon English as a tenor gives an excellent performance. On the piano, Rob Carriker gives also an excellent performance; he does not try to cover the voice of Jon English but just to support his voice. So, Jon English and Rob Carriker form a very fine duo and the quality of recording is excellent. The choice of songs is also excellent. I strongly recommend this CD.
What an Excellent Work of Art!.......2002-08-30
John English has a booming and resounding voice. Well suited for the rough and tough songs of our countries historic wars. It is an excellent buy, and I recommend it to any fans of great songs and American historics!
Excellent!.......2002-08-30
This cd is excellent! I reccomend it to everyone!! Jonathon English has got an amazing voice!
What A Blast - A Fun and Inspiring CD.......2002-07-30
I have to admit - I didn't know what I'd be getting when I bought this album. I love Americana and have known some of these songs all my life: K-K-K-Katy, Keep the Home-Fires Burning, and Tenting on the Old Camp Ground. Others that are listed I had never heard before: The Soldier's Tear, When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band to France, and the very funny Captain Jinks! From first to last I found this CD a joy to hear. Jon English has a beautiful voice, and he sings with such clarity that you can understand every word! There are songs that will get your feet taping, and others that will bring a tear to your eye. The chorus is quite obviously not a professional choir, and that's all the better! They sing with an infectious energy and spirit that'll make you want to sing along. Add into that the horns, flute and percussion and this album becomes very pleasant experience. This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time, and I heartily recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
CROSSOVER DOES NOT WORK.......2005-03-07
Some interesting tracks but this is a Caballe album and should be reviewed as such. Fans of other artists should look at their artists' own releases and not this one. Caballe is a great operatic soprano but the crossover does not work for me. The classical operatic training does not do justice to the songs which require an altogether different voice. Finally, the mixing is very poor. Clearly the tracks are recorded at different times, studios and with different equipment. This makes it difficult to balance the songs from an audio quality point of view.
Nice album.......2003-10-07
Nice album overall, Great interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody by Bruce Dickinson(Iron Maiden's singer), making it a memorable version.
Caballe and other great voices.......2003-03-19
Interesting mix of talent but over all Caballe and Gino Vannelli shine. They are both superb vocalists. Also love the version of Sailing - great song. This is a great investment, especially if you are a Gino Vannelli fan.
A ROSE IN DECEMBER by Gino Vannelli.......2003-02-07
Every Gino Vannelli fan on this planet have to buy this cd FRIENDS FOR LIFE with these 2 masterpieces by Gino Vannelli :
A ROSE IN DECEMBER and
PUT THE WEIGHT ON YOUR SHOULDERS, especially A ROSE IN DECEMBER touched us very deep and makes free all kinds of emotions.....
First tears, real tears than thoughts, deep thoughts !! One of the most beautiful and emotional songs ever created and composed a real masterpiece created by the Master of Music : GINO VANNELLI.Gino Vannelli's voice is superb !!!
This cd is various and for everyone something to like and to enjoy...... so a real MUST for music-lovers around this world.
Go for it !!! Go for the amazing mix of pop-stars and an opera singer !!! KEEP ON ENJOYING GINO VANNELLI'S VOICE AND MUSIC FOREVER.............. One of life's greatest joys !!! Barend and Trees in Holland who are even not ashamed for writing this review.
Montserrat does it again!.......2003-02-01
I haven't heard the whole cd. But I believe Montserrat to be one of the greatest sopranos ever. She certainly has great vocal beauty, power, and class. And she has probably the most unique voice in all of opera. Nearly every recording that has her voice on it is great.
Bruce Dickinson does no justice to bohemian rhapsody in the duet . Bruce Dickinson is clearly one of the worst vocalists ever to curse the planet. I do like the band iron maiden but Bruce Dickinson just isn't even close to the greatness of Freddy Mercury.

Customer Reviews:
Flying on the Viewless Wings of Poesy.......2006-09-01
I was quite impressed with this CD. I'm not very knowledgeable about classical vocals, but the music on "Nightingale" reminded me somewhat of the songs written by Schubert with lyrics by Goethe I learned about back in Music Appreciation class in college. Most of the selections here are light-hearted and simple with a mild undertone of melancholy, though "The Snow Maiden" is somewhat darker in feel (rather like "The Erl King") and the "Four Songs of Dusk" are positively eerie. As for the vocalist himself, Yoshikazu Mera has an incredible voice, clearly a native endowment of talent that he has fine-tuned with practice and training into a precision instrument. I was struck by the way he not only just sings the words but evokes their mood with his singing, summoning them forth as it were, so that the listener not only hears but really feels the lyrics.
This album was interesting to me in other ways, too, besides its primary appeal as twentieth century classical music. It brought to my attention a whole genre of music in modern Japan, and most of the selections are key pieces in this tradition, giving this CD much value in terms of "music history" more generally and "Japanese cultural history" more specifically. Furthermore, the texts of the lyrics in these pieces are taken from key Japanese poets such as Kitahara Hakushu, Sato Haruo, Kato Shuichi, and Tanikawa Shuntaro, so there is much of interest here for anyone into Japanese literature as well.
Many thanks to my Amazon friend Nurit David for suggesting this fine CD.
Playful Mera and the over-zealous pianist.......2006-04-20
This CD has to be one of Mera's best. That said it's not particularly original and verges on being a shade dull in places. "How could this be possible"?, I hear you ask. The answer is simple. Whilst Mera's voice is pure and sweet; soars and sweeps with the grace and elegance one has come to expect from this world-class artist, Kikuko OGURA on the piano has a lot to learn. We have bought the disc because we want to listen to Mera, not some heavy-handed, over-zealous support act that is drowning out the main attraction. The piano is clumsly, heavy and not quite at the same level of excellence as Mera, that coupled with the sheer blandness of the playing gives the impression the composition was not considered nearly enough. The producer believing that shoddy production levels and poor balance would be compensated for Mera's angelic tones was WRONG. This CD finds Mera in a playful mood, but TWENTY-ONE TRACKS of clunky piano and Mera's vocals (however brilliant) is enough to test the patience of even the most ardent fan.
Excellent, if a bit of an oddity.......2002-05-13
These are true 'Art songs', Japanese Lieder, and I'm not sure that many Japanese would be familiar with these songs which are some distance from classical folk songs like Esashi oiwake. Mera's voice of course is exemplary, and credit to BIS for including the full Japanese sung texts (in Japanese script), along with accurate English translations.
The travails of life melt away listening to "Nightingale.".......1999-03-01
Yoshikazu Mera, the counter-tenor from Japan, is, perhaps, the finest classical voice I have ever heard. Now, I say "classical voice" as if I knew what I was talking about but here is what I mean: when it comes to a singer, male or female, interpreting the works of Strauss, Handel, Bach, etc., there is no finer counter-tenor in the world than Mera in my humble opinion. His command of his vocal cords is so precise and so hauntingly consistent that I have been spiritually transported to places I have never been before thanks to this man's incredible gift for nailing down notes with precision and grace. I wish the President of the United States would showcase this man's work at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts because then America could become familiar with the world-class counter-tenor we simply know as Yoshikazu Mera. He would, I believe, leave everyone who heard him in person bereft of words and filled, to the brim, with awe. I wish my words were as eloquent as his voice but they are not so you will just have to get a copy of this excellent CD and what I consider to be the companion piece, "Romance." Happy listening!!
Haunting.......1999-01-18
When I first heard Mera, I was taken aback by the quality of his voice. A sampler disc arrived with a Gramophone magazine and it took me some time to get around to listening to it, thinking that he was "just another counter-tenor". However, it became apparent very quickly that Yoshikazu Mera is not "just another counter-tenor". His voice floats, it soars. It is haunting, sometimes it seems to come from another world. I have also listened to his Baroque recordings, but this disc (as well as the recent "Romance") sets Mera apart from the other counter-tenors. The material on "Nightingale" is very evocative and Mera paints beautiful pictures with the shadings in his voice.

This is one of a series of recitals from Hanssler in their Vocal Series published in 1999, and which I have to confess I picked up in a bargin bin. Alan Blyth gave it a warmish review in the Sept 99 Gramophone, as warm as possible given the absence of texts and translations in a full price recital. Though I note the Ingeborg Danz Brahms CD in the same series does have texts.
Comparing the Sibelius settings with Soderstrom, Otter and Karneus I found that Camilla Nylund didn't particularly have much to say that these Swedish singers didn't - perhaps since all the Sibelius settings on this CD are of Swedish poets. I can't compare Nylund with fellow Finns Monica Groop and Soile Isokoski. What I bought the CD for were the four settings of Sibelius' contemporary Kuula - but again, without texts had the same vaguely lost feeling as the Gramophone reviewer. A much better buy would be the recital "From the Heart of Finland" by Mattila reviewed March 97 Gramophone 3/1997, Ondine ODE892-2, which includes some different Kuula songs, or Camilla Nylund's Kilpinen CD on CPO, both of these with texts and translations for those of us who don't speak Finnish.
I don't have any particular comment on the Debussy or Britten settings.

Take a chance on this one..........2000-10-06
Tom's first solo CD is a textbook example of how to do it all right. He has a marvelous mixture of standards and new material, and the arrangements are always involving and exciting. (One songwriter represented here told me that Tom's recording of his material is among the very best versions he had heard of his song.) Tom has a warm, rich quality to his voice, plus the musicality to pull it all off. I would urge anyone interested in the new vocalists now making their marks to take a chance on this CD; you will treasure this collection.
Muy bien from Mexico.......2000-03-23
Although my english is not so good, I loved this CD, the vocals of the artist are wonderful and his lyrics very clear, this guy should be more famous, I wonder if this guy has any latin blood. He must.
Sail away with Tom Michael's stunningly beautiful CD.......2000-02-22
Defintely the easy listening CD of the year! I was simply blown away by Tom's beautiful vocals. Track for track this is the best CD I have heard in the last year!
The albums best cuts are the title song "Sailing On" given an inspiring delivery by Tom where his vocals glide and weave awesome heights, a haunting reading of Tom Anderson's "Two Chairs," augmented with a stirring cello arrangement, a heart wrenching version of Better Days and the definitive version of "The Way You Look Tonight." Another highlight of the CD is Tom's arranger, pianist, and duet partner Beckie Menziie. What a bargain, you get two stunning talents for the price of one cd!
Their duets (there are 3) are incredible, with the best being the Burt Bacharach classic "Anyone Who Had A Heart." Their rendition gives the song new meaning and one can only imagine how the song should really be sung.
Another highlight is their reading of Jason Robert Browne's "I'd Give It All For You"
They also do a fantastic version of the Dave Brubeck classic "Take 5"....with lyrics!
This is a must for your collection. If you love the CD's of Lee Lessak, Brian Lane Green, John Barr or Charles Cermele....you will absolutely love this CD. This should sail on right into your CD collection.
