5 out of 5 stars John Waite ROCKS.......2007-06-29

This CD is so special to me. John Waite's song, "How Did I Survive Without You" is our special song. My husband and I fell in love while listening to that song over 12 years ago. We fall deeper in love every time we hear that song!! I think we have just about worn this CD out too!! www.spiceupyourlifetoday.com

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-06-27

This is an incredible collection of songs, spanning the brilliant career of one of rock's quirkiest(and most rememorable) voices. From The Baby's to Bad English, John's trademark vocals (poignant as well as sarcastic) are indelibly written into the soundtrack of my life.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete John Waite Vol 1.......2007-05-09

It was nice to see that Amazon had so many John Waite titles available. This is a great cd for those who want to get all the hits in one.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-04-26

If you grew up to the Babys like I did then your going to love this album a mixture of old and New. Well worth the cost....go for it.

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-31

If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

3 out of 5 stars It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

4 out of 5 stars Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-10-23

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

4 out of 5 stars just a warning..........2005-10-14

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

Sàndor, still active at 90 as this reissue appears, was a student of Bartók and a preferred interpreter of his music. Since this set appeared on nine LPs in the early 1960s, it has been the standard for Bartók's piano music; in this fine-sounding reissue, it still is. Sàndor can hit hard enough for such virtuoso pieces as the Piano Sonata and "Out of Doors," but he also retains the romantic element heard in the composer's own playing which tempers the harsher qualities of the music. While this collection isn't quite as complete as advertised (some early, insignificant piano music by Bartók is omitted), it includes all of Bartók's significant piano music, including such relatively obscure gems as the Bagatelles, eight Improvisations, and many delectable folk arrangements which will appeal even to listeners who think Bartók is too challenging for them. Vox's recorded sound, superbly remastered, resists obsolescence as effectively as Sàndor's performances. Even with the inclusion of the early books of "Mikrokosmos," which will appeal mostly to piano students, this set is worth several times the asking price. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Microcosmos.......2007-03-08

Sándor was a champion not only of Bartók's music but also of Bartók's style of playing. He often complained that people were too quick to see Bartók as ultra-modern, and to fail to appreciate the rich seam of lyricism that also runs through his music.

The piano music is dominated by short pieces, many of them written for piano students, notably the collections "Microcosmos" and "For Children". These, together with suites of folk dance arrangements, make up the bulk of the solo piano output.

Sandór plays these short, and often simple pieces, with neither too much nor too little art. As a gifted teacher, he knew unerringly how much music each of these small vessels held. The result is beguiling - but be warned: no-one can listen to the 153 short pieces of Microcosmos end-to-end. This is an anthology to be dipped into, not swallowed whole.

The remastering is pretty successful (fortunately - some of Vox's CD reissues are plagued by severe deterioration of the original tapes). And it's for half nothing-what's not to like?

4 out of 5 stars Great value with a few flaws.......2006-07-28

I am not a Bartok expert by any scale, but I do like the way these pieces, without exception, are played. There are, however, a couple of other problems.

As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, very few of the works are split into tracks - Mikrokosmos is divided into 7 for each of its six volumes, and to accomodate for a full CD. In these seven tracks there are 121 songs. I would have much preferred if the songs had been split into tracks. Almost the entire CD set is this way - Fifteen Hungarian Songs is one track, Fourteen Bagatelles, etc. It is very annoying when one wants to hear a particular song in those tracks and not the others.

Another detriment to the collection is the recording quality. It is decent most of the time, but in loud sections the piano buzzes. One might be able to ignore it, but I think that it detracts from the passion of the forte quite a bit.

Overall, for $18 it is pretty decent, but if you are like me and like to keep your music library neatly organized (and aren't extremely cheap), I would not recommend this set.

3 out of 5 stars eeh, I guess I don't like Bartok that much.......2006-07-25

I like the fact that Bartok is into the folk tradition and all, but he just tends to forget the fact that melody has to be SOMEWHERE in the music. I'm all for creative expression when you're sitting alone at the piano, but abstract music should be reserved for performance art. I like playing some of your stuff Bela, but I just don't want to listen to you.

5 out of 5 stars Best classical value out there.......2005-10-05

To put this set in perspective, for months I would go to my local Tower Records fishing for worthwhile classical CDs at least once a week. One of the discs that sat in the bins the longest was a single CD of Bartok piano music, played by Zoltan Kocsis. It was Volume 7 of a complete series. This CD listed for $17.99, and as long as I went to that Tower Records, it did not budge an inch, nor was its price amended.

Now, Kocsis is one of the greatest pianists alive, and if anyone is worthy of commanding a premium, it is him. And to be fair, that CD is going to be re-released on October 11 as part of a Collector's Edition - eight CDs, $63.97 MSRP. But it's already going up against this little gem, which contains five CDs with all of the truly great solo-piano works by an internationally recognized Bartok specialist for $21 - not much more than the cost of one CD from the other set. This kind of value is not to be taken lightly.

I came to this set with my impression of Sandor informed by his complete Prokofiev - ultra-hard, sometimes rhythmically slack, always melodically lacking in some way or another. But he held a very special feeling for Bartok, and saved his best playing for the great Hungarian. In passages like the first of the Three Csik Dances, the opening of the Improvisations Op. 20, or in the Ten Easy Pieces, there is a simplicity, charm and wistful homesickness that is quite touching. In pieces like the Out of Doors suite, the Sonata, or the Burlesques, there is a vicious, impulsive energy, a wicked sense of humor and an overabundance of overtones. It is never mindless, inappropriate or even overly harsh - it's just very, very loud.

In this set I like best the endless landscape of the Sonatina, the unusual colors and fragrances in the Etudes, the brilliantly conceived Bear Dance (the last of the Ten Easy Pieces), and the multifaceted, complex, gorgeous Improvisations. Any fan of Bartok should hear these.

4 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the music and performance.......2005-04-04

This is a fantastic deal, but the problem with this Collection stems from the fact that the pieces are often not separated by tracks. This is especially annoying for the Children's Pieces and Mikrokosmos. There are so many pieces, one wears out the fast forward button and still may miss the particular piece one is looking for. The booklet is fairly insightful, and the performer is widely hailed as the supreme interpreter of Bartok's piano music. So aside from this slightly annoying at times and ridiculously annoying at other times flaw, this is one of the best deals in Classical music. Don't hesitate. Add it to the cart.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars mixed feelings, 3 stars........2007-07-05

There are quite a few of Debussy's piano pieces that immediately ring a bell in the mind - Clair de Lune, Gollowog's Cake Walk, La Petite Negre, En Bateau, La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin, La Catedrale Engloutie, etc. These pieces are not, in my opinion, where Thibaudet shines, and make me wish I had a different set (but who's?) The Sunken Cathedral is quite nice, I admit. I will also say that he is quite listenable, whereas Geiseking (sp?) made me so angry I had spent $60 that I stopped buying classical cds for about 10 years.

On the other hand, Thibaudet does have technical mastery - the pieces with which I am less familiar, etudes especially (referring to vol. 2 of the set) are played, to my ears at least, very well, and in fact bring a smile to the face. There is no 'bad' playing anywhere, but the pieces in which I would have liked more musicality lead me to think that the others which I haven't developed an opinion on will sound better in other sets as well. The search continues. At least this set is a good bar.

5 out of 5 stars Jean-Yves Fan.......2007-03-21

I am a big fan of Jean-Yves playing(and a Debussy fan) so I enjoyed this recording. Piano style is a personal preference. (as a musician and pianist I know what I like and what I don't like and it is often not the same as what others prefer) If you enjoyed any other recordings by Jean-Yves or have seen him and concert and loved him you will enjoy this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Superior recordings and performances.......2005-09-18

The Penguin Guide to CDs and DVDs has Thibaudet's sets of the complete Debussy solo piano music at the top of the digital recordings, and this is certainly high quality.

We have several recordings of the Preludes and some other works, but there is nothing to come close to Thibaudet for great performances and superior recording quality.

The liner notes are very helpful, and in the first set you get different articles in English, French, German and Italian. Great if you are multilingual, but only of marginal interest to me. The second set has one article and translations, not separate articles.

Well worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars Another installment of great by Thibaudet.......2000-06-13

Thibaudet certainly has a great knack for playing French music. Perhaps it is because he is French himself, or perhaps it is because he has been blessed with a wonderful insight to piano music in general. I say this, because he brings such great musicianship to whatever he puts to record or performance. This two CD set of Debussy's Preludes exudes the personalities of both the composer and the pianist. Debussy, known as the great impressionist composer, delicately has painted numerous portraits in his preludes and this recording certainly does well at bringing them out. Technically, these pieces are played with virtuosity and clear attention to precision, clarity, and musicality. One of the best parts of this set is the a bonus CD of short interviews with Thibaudet in various languages where he himself explains what he has brought to the table in playing these pieces and what insights he had in mind when approaching these pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent cd.......2006-12-30

This is a wonderful Vivaldi selection that does a great job of featuring bassoon. It is classic Vivaldi music and is only made better by the addition of the bassoon solos. For anyone who enjoys the gorgeous energeticness of Vivaldi and wants to hear some bassoon, this is the cd to get.

5 out of 5 stars A Discovery.......2006-08-27

My wife and I were searching for a concert performance piece heard on the radio. Unable to find the exact title, we bought Vivaldi: Complete Basson Concertos, Vol. 1 & 2. We were delighted with both the compositions and the performance. Great music while on long trips. A real discover, depending on your interests.

5 out of 5 stars bassoon playing at its finest.......2005-11-25

This is an excellent set of CDs; the bassoon playing is absolutely superb. It can be hard to find great recordings of Vivaldi bassoon concerti on modern instruments, but Benkocs's playing is refined and technically brilliant. This is definitely one of the best bassoon recordings I've ever heard, on par with Dag Jensen, with whom Benkocs studied. Congrats to Naxos for finding a great bassoonist to do this project!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you!.......2005-05-29

Until this set of recordings was started, all we really had as far as recordings of Vivaldi bassoon concerti were one or two performances of the more popular ones by excellent bassoonists and a load of garbage by a man named Daniel Smith, whose playing is an abomination to both Vivaldi and the bassoon.

(It sickens me that, when we have incredible bassoonists like Dag Jensen and Bernard Garfield and Knut Sönstevold and David McGill and Laurent Lefevré and the late Maurice Allard--perhaps the greatest bassoonist to ever live--and a host of others, all of whom could play circles around Daniel Smith, that the latter's recordings outsell those of the former. He's been called the "James Galway of the bassoon", a pure load of dingo's kidneys by somebody who's obviously never heard even a decent bassoonist in his life. Ridiculous.)

Although Tamás' tone is a little dark for my tastes, it's certainly extremely pleasant to listen to. His phrasing is very beautiful, his technique is spotless, and unlike bassoonists with the initials D.S., he doesn't sound constipated.

Thank you, Tamás. Hopefully, if you complete this set, people will come to their senses.

Buy these discs. You'll like them.

5 out of 5 stars The First of a Series of All of Vivaldi's Bassoon Concerti.......2004-01-24

I don't think I've ever heard a bad recording of a Vivaldi bassoon concerto. That may say more about me than about the recordings, but I don't think so. There is something about these concerti that attracts good players and, let's face it, these are not the most profound compositions ever written; they tend to be virtuosic for the soloist and have fairly simple orchestral accompaniments. They are, however, unfailingly pleasant, falling gracefully on the ear. I have particularly liked the recordings of Klaus Thuneman, Michael McCraw, and William Bennett. Here we have what appears to be the beginning of a new series of Vivaldi Bassoon Concerti featuring a bassoonist heretofore unknown to me, Tamás Benkócs (whose name, I'm informed by a Hungarian friend, is pronounced roughly TAHmahsh BENcoach). He is accompanied by the modern-instrument Nicolaus Esterházy Sinfonia conducted by Béla Drahos, the group and conductor that have made creditable recordings of Beethoven and Haydn symphonies for the Naxos label.

Vivaldi is thought to have written 39 bassoon concerti, of which two or more are incomplete. This CD contains, for those of you who are counting, seven of this number. They are RV 476 in C, 487 in F, 471 in C, 498 in A minor, 480 in C minor, 503 in B flat minor, 493 in G. (RV stands for 'Ryom-Verzeichnis', the catalog made of Vivaldi's works by musicologist Péter Ryom.) I list the specific concerti because Amazon has not done so on this page, or at least they haven't as of this review.

The performances are exemplary. Benkócz's playing is technically flawless as well as being musical. His playing is equally impressive in the dancing fast movements and the more pensive middle movements. He does employ a bit more expressive range than some other players; this possibly accords with more modern scholarship about baroque performance practice. Whether it does or not, it pleased me. Further, his tone is very rich, even in rapid passages. He uses a moderate amount of vibrato, praise be. Tempi are well-chosen.

Pity the poor record label that sets out to record all of Vivaldi's extant concerti for all instruments, something over five hundred. Maybe they'll stop with these bassoon works; I figure they can probably get the bassoon concerti onto about five or six CDs, a number that is not overwhelming. I'll be looking for further issues.

5 out of 5 stars The necessary guitar repertoire.......2007-05-29

It is a very good recording of the most famous cuban composer in the area of the classical guitar.
I recommend this issue very much.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2006-03-07

Cobo plays the hell out of these amazing Brouwer pieces. The classical guitar has never sounded better. Brouwer's work is so distinctive and memorable. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to discover a truly genius composer. And Ricardo Cobo's virtuosity is on full display here; his musicianship is astounding!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-03-01

I can't believe that I am only now discovering the music of Leo Brouwer. His music is sophisticated, yet highly accessible. He manages to mix virtuosity with lyricism in equal parts. The performer Ricardo Cabo is also a real find. He is amazing. Lastly since this is a CD put out by Naxos the quality is high and the price low.

5 out of 5 stars excellent! .......2005-07-19

It's a real pleasure for me to give a reference on this remarkable album. It's really an excellent music - at once modern and classical, and an excellent performance - full of both virtuosity and taste!

5 out of 5 stars A score for Naxos.......2001-09-06

Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1939, Leo Brouwer has written some of the most diverse music for any instrument during the last 60 years. You can hear his Cuban background in the dynamic Afro-Cuban strains of his work. And of course, as in all guitar music, there's a rich Spanish element (in fact, one of Brouwer's guitar teachers studied under a pupil of Francisco Tárrega). But on top of that there's this interesting undercurrent of American folk music from the 1960s, which surely makes Brouwer unique among Latin guitar composers. Plus, you'll be able to hear the influence of Messiaen, Bartok, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky in works like the "Preludio" of 1956 (written when Browuer was 17), "Fuga No. 1", and "Elogio a la danza". As a young guitarist Brouwer was disappointed that few of the great composers of his day had written anything for the guitar, so he just wrote it himself. He wrote his four books of "Estudios sencillos", for example, to provide guitar students with a contemporary alternative to the classic works of men like Sor, Carcassi, and Coste.

This is a great place to begin if you've never listened to anything by Brouwer. It's also incredibly cheap. Ricardo Cobos is one of the foremost interpreters of Brouwer's work and it's good to see such a quality recording come out on the inexpensive Naxos label. All I want to know is: where are the other volumes if this one's just the first? 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars the way brouwer meant it to sound.......2003-11-03

Brouwer himself states that Papandreou preforms his works the way they're supposed to, and I totally aggree!
Papandreou has a great sonority, an unbelievably balanced and astonishing technique, and most of all a profound interpretation. Brouwer himself once stated in an interview that his music is really easy to interpret, if you just play what he mentions in his partitures. Of course this is a little bit to modest of the great composer, but he obviously wanted to make clear that he wants the preformer to play exactly what's in the score, and this is, contrary to a bunch of other guitarists, certainly what Papandreou does on this cd. You can hear every little musical instruction brouwer put into his scores, plus a profound understanding of all the secrets of the pure magic this music holds.
Add to this the low price of this record, and you get a 5*-buy.

5 out of 5 stars Barrrio's belongs in every classical music lovers collection.......2006-09-05

This volume is played with the same mastery of Barrio's as Volume 1 from Naxos. As much as i liked volume 1 this collection is from his later period and contains nothing but masterpieces is even better. While he is famous for the Cathedral each piece on this disc is completey different and moving. I must thank Naxos for releasing these disc because I never would have heard of Barrio's.
According to the notes Barrio's is considered by many to be the best composr of music for guitar.
I would go even further by saying Barrio's belongs in every classical music collection not just people who like guitar music. He is a master and creates powerfully beautiful works.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate Musique pour Clavecin !.......2005-07-20

One of the most importent qualities for a baroque music performer especially keyboardist is to be capable of grasp the psychological languages of the music.in modern times we see diversified approaches: some romanticize it, when those in tradition of G Leonhardt adhere strickly to its ideology and flourish it with colour and sensitivity which render it profound in aesthetic and psychological values.it is why the latters recordings always survive my shelf-washing of music collection and I can never get tired of them.I was also suprised to find a completely less wellknown clavecinist that excels in this quality and rivals the famous pupils of Leonhardt I see why the reviewer below set this disc on "Repeat".it is really a wonderful generous gift from NAXOS !

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome recording!.......2004-11-04

I have always liked Rameau's works and since I love harpsichord music also, I just had to have this recording!

The melodic playing of Gilbert Rowland makes Rameau's music just dance from my stereo speakers. I am a fan of Igor Kipnis and Ton Koopman but must admit I have to add Rowland to that list!

The represented harpsichord music of Rameau on this recording, for me, congers images of a baroque era courtly gathering with ladies and gents doing a dainty dance while the music of these masterpieces wafts through the air.

I am so captivated by the complex chords and the ease with which they are played that I put the CD on "repeat" to listen to it all day!

5 out of 5 stars Scintillating disk - Pure entertainment.......2002-10-09

If a guy who died 300 years ago could "swing", Rameau would be it. The instrument is a harpsichord. The technique is 20th century jazz. There is a panoply of origins: French, English, Scotch. Rameau defined "rhythm". The performance is a flawless interpretation of a variety of styles and embellishments. Rameau had the "beat" long before the Beatles. This is a fabulous album even if you have never heard of the "Addams Family".
