The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.

hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Interesting mid sixties albums.......2003-03-29

The two albums that make up this twofer were originally released in Britain and America with different titles and slightly different track listings. All tracks that appeared on either version of the album are included here.

The first album was titled Looking through the eyes of love in America, but Gene Pitney sings the great songs of our times in the UK. It is made up mainly of cover versions of classic songs, though the USA version also includes Looking through the eyes of love. That song gave him a top thirty American hit. It had previously been a huge British hit and had been the title of a completely different UK album (the one that was titled I must be seeing things in the States, and which can be found on another twofer in this series).

The songs on the first album include Tonight, Misty (a song originally made famous by Johnny Mathis, though Ray Stevens later did an up-tempo country version of it), Unchained melody, As long as she needs me, Maria (from West side story), More, On the street where you live and All the way. Some of these songs were written in the fifties but others are much older.

The second half of this twofer includes the tracks from the American album titled Backstage, which was titled Nobody needs your love in the UK. Both title tracks were huge hits in Britain, but only Backstage was released as a single in America, where it was a top thirty hit. The rest of the album was filled with contemporary material, including a cover of Manfred Mann's Pretty flamingo.

There are three bonus tracks that did not appear on any original album, including Princess in rags, a top ten UK hit and top forty USA hit.

Can this Man sing or what?.......2002-08-15

I own almost every Gene Pitney CD there is to own and this one is one of my favorites. I only wish I could sing like Gene espicially when he sings "Maria", "Tonight" "On The Street Where You Live" and other classics. If you think you like Gene Pitney, this CD will make you fall in love with Gene and then you will have to have the rest of his collections, just like me. I owe my older sisters a big one for introducing me to Gene back in the 60's when I was just 9 or 10 years old, now I'm addicted and can't get enough of him and either will you.

Great songs review.......2002-07-18

I've had this album for awhile and it's already worn out. I love the music from the 40's and 50's and Gene Pitney sings them as well as the original artists! A must have for your Gene Pitney collection.
